Freeze Prevention Tips For Your Home We are fortunate in the Houston area that our winters are mild. However, we do experience a cold snap now and then; therefore, the following information may be helpful in preparing your home for freezing conditions. As a rule of thumb, if the expected temperature falls below 26 degrees, freeze damage can occur to your pipes. Methods to use to protect your water pipes: 1. Insulate any exposed outdoor pipes with insulating materials available at hardware stores. 2. Disconnect hoses from outside faucets and cover faucet with an insulating Styrofoam cap or wrap with a towel and duct tape. 3. Shut off sprinkler system and drain if possible. Also, insulate any exposed piping on your sprinkler system. 4. Locate your homeowner’s cut-off valve where your water line enters your house. If you cannot find this valve or it is not working, contact a plumber and have it repaired or located, so that if you have a leak or broken pipe in your home, you will be able to turn your water off quickly. 5. If you are going to be away from your home during freezing weather, turn your water off at your homeowner’s cut-off valve and drain your faucets. If you cannot locate your house cut-off valve, contact Regional Water Corporation at 281-897-9100 and request a temporary turn-off at your water meter. Do not operate the valve at the water meter. This valve is only to be operated by authorized District representatives. 6. Remember, if you drain your hot water heater, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and turn the electrical power or gas supply off so the unit does not overheat. 7. Do not let inside faucets drip. If everyone lets their faucets drip, this can place a burden on your water system, cause low pressure and defeat the purpose of dripping faucets in the first place.

TREES AND SHRUBS • Finish all transplanting, get everything in the ground for a good spring spurt of growth. Transplant balled and burlap, container-grown, bare-root deciduous evergreen trees, shrubs, roses and vines while still dormant. • Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed. • Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene. • At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest. • Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster. • Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

BAILADORAS BEGIN CONTEST SEASON After a football season filled with great half-time performances, the LCHS Drill Team got right to work on competition dances. They kicked off the Contest Season at the Crowd Pleaser Winter Showcase held at Dulles High School on December 10th. This competition focused on solos, duets, ensembles and officer groups.

Dance officers Victoria Vecchio, Kingsley Credeur, Courtland Klein, Maddie Sheedlo and Katelyn Vincik received several awards in the Officer category including Best in Class for their Jazz, Lyrical and Novelty routines and 1st Runner up for their Contemporary dance. Their Jazz dance was the highest scoring routine of the day and they received and Oustanding Choreography award for both Jazz and Lyrical. The Dance officers were proud to receive the hightest award of

The Bailadoras also received 1st Place in the Large Ensemble Division with their Hip Hop Routine. Christina Licarione was awarded 1st Place in the Junior Solo Division. Kingsley Credeur and Maddie Sheedlo received 1st Place in the Duet Division. Christina Licarione, Taylor Lukasek and Morgan Montalbano received 1st Runner Up in the Trio Division. Fight Back Ceremony: Before participants leave Relay, they make a personal commitment to help fight back against cancer in several ways. The Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club is registering athletes for the 2013 summer track season. Elementary students up to 6th grade should register during February and the first week of March. Middle and high school athletes can also register, but should compete after their school season is over.
Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 18 for the Spring Season. Games start on April 13, 2013. FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 15,000 players throughout the Greater Houston area. Ingredients 4 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) chicken broth 3 cups shredded cooked turkey or rotisserie chicken 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15-1/4 ounces) whole kernel corn, drained 1/2 cup medium salsa 5 corn tortillas (6 inches), cut into 1/4-inch strips 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro Additional salsa, optional Directions In a Dutch oven, combine the first five ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, spread tortilla strips in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 400° 4-6 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Celebrate Mardi Gras!
Translated from the French, Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday.” In short, it’s the last day before the traditional Catholic Lenten fasting season leading up to Easter Sunday. For those cities that celebrate it - most famously New Orleans, Louisiana - Mardi Gras means feasts, multiple parades, elaborate costumes and parties. Mardi Gras Origin Some scholars trace Mardi Gras’ roots to the ancient Roman Lupercalia festival, which was held in mid-February. Like many other pagan holidays, early Church leaders incorporated elements of the celebration into the new faith rather than risk alienating converted followers. As Catholicism spread across Europe, so did the Mardi Gras celebration. Mardi Gras Comes to America By the Middle Ages, Mardi Gras or “Carnival,” had become a major holiday in France and early French explorers brought the tradition to the New World when establishing settlements in their explorations of the Mississippi River. With its strong French roots, New Orleans naturally evolved into one of the premier Mardi Gras destinations in the world. Mardi Gras: The Religious roots The Mardi Gras kicks off on the Epiphany, twelve days after Christmas on January 6th, also known as Twelfth Night or Three Kings Day, celebrating the arrival of the three wise men and their gifts to the baby Jesus. The season ends promptly at midnight on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. What’s in a name: Eating a calf The name “Fat Tuesday” comes from the tradition of eating a slaughtered calf on the final day of Carnival. These days, though, that definition has expanded to include feasting on pretty much any rich fatty food. Mardi Gras Around the world Mardi Gras or Carnival is celebrated in many cities around the world besides New Orleans, including Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Nice, France and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But many small towns and municipalities celebrate Mardi Gras as well, including the tiny community of Rubonia, Florida. The Universal Studios Florida theme park also throws a Mardi Gras celebration on weeknights from February to April, featuring parades and concerts by national acts.
