(GT ESTATES) DEBRIS IN SEWER DRAINS

Please refrain from depositing any debris (lawn clippings, leaves, pet waste, motor oil, etc.) into the streets or storm drains. Disposing of debris in the street or other portions of the storm water drainage system can create problems. Flooding takes place when the system becomes blocked with debris. This can create a flooding potential that could result in property damage. The water quality is impacted if you’ve used chemicals on your lawn or garden. In addition, pet waste left on yards can contribute to contaminated run off. Grass clippings and leaves left in the storm water system contribute to system wear and can destroy the underground system. Please make sure you dispose of your lawn clippings, leaves and other debris in a proper manner.

(GT ESTATES) Security

Neighborhood security is provided by the Harris County Constables Precinct 5 Office, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. We also have an additional contract with them (Contract 50 - in conjunction with the other sections of Green Trails and Windsor Park Lakes). To contact the Constable’s Office:
 • Emergency - 911
 • Harris Country Constable Dispatch: 281-463-6666. PLEASE CALL THEM IF YOU SEE ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS OR NEED SECURITY INFORMATION. The Constable’s office encourages residents to call if they see any suspicious or bothersome activity. Please keep your vehicles locked at all times to reduce crime of opportunity.

(GT ESTATES) Trash Service 2012

Estates of Green Trails has bi-weekly trash pick-up on Wednesdays and Saturdays by Waste Corporation of America (WCA) (Phone 281-368-8397). Should you be overlooked by WCA on a pickup day, please call WCA directly and register any complaints with Sterling ASI (Phone 281-491-0266). They will follow up with WCA about the problem. Holidays, which fall on our pickup days mean that trash will be picked up the next school service day. The following is a list of holidays observed by WCA Services: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Please have your trash ready for pickup by 7 AM on pickup days. Landscaping debris, such as large bags of grass clippings, tree branches/limbs, etc. will be picked up either day, but it must be carried to the end of your driveway and left there for pickup; you can bring these heavy items out the night before, but please not several days in advance of pickup. Your neighbors appreciate it! Heavy household items such as hot water heaters, washers, etc. are considered “heavy trash” and are picked up on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Residents of Constable Precinct 3 contract subdivisions, which include Estates of Green Trails, can have their homes checked by a drive-by patrol officer while they are away on vacation. Please contact the Constable’s office at 281-427-4791 or 713-453-6959 or complete a Vacation Watch Form, which can be found in the Forms section - You will need to complete the form and submit it to the Constable’s office one week before you leave!

February 2013

All other trash will be picked up “at the back door” (outside the gate beside the garage, etc.) by WCA. Please be sure trash is visible and/or accessible to them, and please keep all pets safely away from that area of your yard. We pay for “back door” pickup, so that is where the men look for your trash.

TREES AND SHRUBS • Finish all transplanting, get everything in the ground for a good spring spurt of growth. Transplant balled and burlap, container-grown, bare-root deciduous evergreen trees, shrubs, roses and vines while still dormant. • Finish pruning roses. Weed and cultivate lightly all beds. Replenish mulch as needed. • Control early spring insects like thrips on glads and aphids on young tender growth. Spray with Malathion, Diazinon or Orthene. • At the end of February: peach, apple and pear fruit must be thinned to insure quality production at harvest. • Give groundcovers a haircut. They will spread faster. • Divide daylilies, daisies and other perennials now.

Texas Christian School is Changing Acorns to Oaks

“Changing Acorns to Oaks” is the theme at Texas Christian School this fall, as well as the title of their annual school wide play this past November. Families and community members enjoyed an eventful evening at the farm where Jr. High and High School students played key roles and students 2 years old – 12th grade sang songs. This fun filled evening will be remembered for years by the class of 2013 as they gave the audience quite a laugh in their roles. Academic, social and spiritual growth is a priority for the administration and staff of TCS. Plan to visit the campus at 6:30 PM for our Open House on February 21st and March 26th to learn more about what Texas Christian has to offer. Texas Christian School is located at 17810 Kieth Harrow Blvd., Houston, TX 77084. Phone 281-550-6060 and website is www.TexasChristianSchool.org

STAAR SCORES WILL NOT AFFECT COURSE GRADES FOR 2012 - 2013

Texas Commissioner of Education Michael Williams announced today that he will again defer the requirement that states that STAAR end-of-course examinations be counted as 15 percent of a student’s final grade in each subject tested. With this announcement, local school districts have the option to move forward with the 15 percent rule for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. Last year, Katy ISD opted to participate in the deferral as the district adjusted to the rigor of the new STAAR test. “Katy ISD will again participate in the deferral, as we feel that this will allow both students and teachers an opportunity to better understand STAAR, while focusing on the subject matter and not just a final test score,” said Dr. Christine Caskey, Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer. As posted on the Texas Education Agency’s website: “Deferring the 15 percent rule for this school year relieves some of the pressure being felt in Texas districts as we continue the transition to a more rigorous accountability system,” Williams said. “This deferral also allows the Texas Legislature ample opportunity to address the various issues and concerns that have been expressed about implementation of the new system.” On Nov. 29th, Williams received letters from Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Education Committee Chair Dan Patrick urging deferral of the 15 percent rule. All three state leaders noted the rule would be an issue that would be discussed during the upcoming legislative session. To read the full announcement from the Texas Education Agency, visit http:// www.tea.state.tx.us/news_release.aspx?id=2147510194 (website).

Make Your Fat Tuesday Phat with New Creation Church!

Fat Tuesday marks the end of Mardi Gras and the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. Many traditions celebrate Fat Tuesday with the eating of pancakes, giving the occasion the name ‘Pancake Tuesday’ or ‘Pancake Day.’ Pancakes contain flour, eggs and sugar, which were once forbidden rich foods during Lent. Chef Carlos Vasquez

New Creation Church is reviving the old tradition of serving pancakes on Fat Tuesday with a Katy/Fulshear Community Pancake Supper. The public is invited to join us on Tuesday, February 12th, from 5 -7 PM at the Irene Stern Community Center for pancakes and the trimmings! A free will offering will be accepted. Carlos Vasquez, an Executive Sous Chef at the Hyatt Regency Houston, will head the kitchen staff. When asked to volunteer he replied, “Pancakes are too simple! I’ll have to add something special. You’ll have to come to find out what!” Chef Carlos is a graduate of the esteemed Culinary Institute LeNotre and oversees many operations of the hotel including Shula’s Steak House restaurant. The Irene Stern Community Center in Fulshear is located on 6920 Katy Fulshear Rd, 77441. please call Pastor Dale, 832-492-5136 or go to www.newcreationfulshear.org for a group reservation.

New Creation Church brought a Christmas gift to shoppers at the Katy/Fulshear Kroger Store!

During the December 16th Grand Opening of the new Kroger’s Store on FM 1093, voices of the community took part in the First Annual Community SingAlong. New Creation singers and members of the community shared their voices with the shoppers and staff while students of the Keller Academy of Performing Arts performed to the Hallelujah Chorus. Pastor Olson, founding pastor of New Creation, says, “We have been invited to make this an annual event. Christian Ministry in a community does not always have to be serious!”

Katy Churches Combine to Celebrate Christmas around the World

The December 9th concert, “Christmas around the World,” was the nineteenth year that the congregations of Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church and the Katy Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have combined for a Christmas concert. The collaboration began in 1994, at the invitation

14

February 2013

The theme of the evening was introduced with flags from many countries being marched in while the congregation joined the choir for “O Come All Ye Faithful.” The Christmas music of the concert came from many nations: Italy, West Indies, Ireland, France, Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Philippines and Africa, as well as some English and American traditional tunes. There were several highlights. The Latin “O Magnum Mysterium,” gave the impression of a cappella beauty resonating in a Roman cathedral. “O Holy Night,” with the choir backing up Debbie Siebert’s soprano solo, brought audience members the Christmas glory they were hoping to feel. “Silent Night,” sung simply to guitar, as it was originally written, was essential. The two choirs and any who join them from the community, plan to continue the tradition for years to come, with next year marking two decades of singing together. Epiphany includes about 2,500 members in and around Katy. The Katy Stake includes 10 congregations in and around Katy, as well as north to Bear Creek and Copperfield areas and west into Austin County and beyond.

The

2013 Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo

It made history in 1943 as the first of its kind to be established on a local school level and now the Katy Rodeo has grown to encompass three nights of rodeo entertainment for the whole family. 70 years later, the Katy Rodeo is one of the few remaining youth and professional rodeos still supporting FFA.

Theater, Arts & Music

In conjunction with the annual Katy ISD livestock show, the Katy Rodeo is an event that supports agricultural education within the Katy Independent School District. The livestock show, rodeo, carnival and parade draw sold out crowds from Katy and many of the surrounding areas.

Houston Family Arts Center Announces 2012-2013 Season Memories and Traditions

The young children can also participate in the rodeo events by joining the Stick Horse race or the ever-popular Mutton Bustin’. The KISD FFA students have a chance to compete in the “ever popular” Calf Scramble. The carnival also delights spectators of all ages, as well as the annual Saturday Morning Parade. The 2013 Katy ISD FFA Livestock Show and Rodeo kicks off its historic 70th year on Thursday, February 21st and runs through Saturday, February 23rd. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year.

CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering positive mentoring relationships. The goal is crime prevention! Our mentors must be 21 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week. There are many sites, areas and available times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned child. We desperately need loving and caring mentors for boys and girls that do not have anyone visiting them! Please consider devoting just one hour a week to the future of a needy child, many times you are their only visitors. Contact Jan Sadler Gibbs at jan.gibbs@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779.

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

Fudge Truffle Cheesecake 1 1/2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/3 cup butter, softened 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 4 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). In a large mixing bowl, mix together crushed vanilla wafers, confectioners’ sugar, cocoa and butter or margarine by hand. Press ingredients into a 9 inch springform pan. In the top of a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips, making sure that they are very smooth. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy with an electric mixer. Gradually beat in condensed milk until smooth. Mix in melted chocolate, eggs and vanilla. Beat with electric mixer on low speed until the ingredients are thoroughly blended. Pour the filling into the prepared crust. Bake at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for 55 minutes. The cake will seem under-baked in the center, but will continue to cook after you remove it from the oven. Source: allrecipes.com, Submitted by: Macs

French Butter Cakes (Madeleines)

2 eggs 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup butter

3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/3 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1/3 cup granulated sugar for decoration

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Butter and flour 12 (3 inch) madeleine molds; set aside. Melt butter and let cool to room temperature. In a small mixing bowl, beat eggs, vanilla and salt at high speed until light. Beating constantly, gradually add sugar and continue beating at high speed until mixture is thick and pale and ribbons form in bowl when beaters are lifted, 5 to 10 minutes. Sift flour into egg mixture 1/3 at a time, gently folding after each addition. Add lemon zest and pour melted butter around edge of batter. Quickly but gently fold butter into batter. Spoon batter into molds; it will mound slightly above tops. Bake 14 to 17 minutes, or until cakes are golden and the tops spring back when gently pressed with your fingertip. Use the tip of the knife to loosen madeleines from pan; invert onto rack. Immediately sprinkle warm cookies with granulated sugar. Madeleines are best eaten the day they’re baked. Leftover madeleines are wonderful when dunked into coffee or tea. Variation: Chocolate Madeleines: Omit lemon zest. Increase sugar to 1/2 cup. Substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for 2 tablespoons of the flour; sift into batter with flour. EDITOR’S NOTE: If you do not have a Madeleine mold pan, you can use mini muffins pan or whoopee mold pan instead. (I haven’t tried, but would think even a cornbread stick pan would work if greased and floured well enough.) Source: allrecipes.com, Submitted by: Judy Farris
