UPCOMING COMMUNITY EVENTS Community Garage Sale Saturday, November 3rd, 7:00 AM – 12 Noon: It’s almost time again to clean out your closets for our fall communitywide garage sale. You won’t have to haul your items far; the garage sale will take place in YOUR OWN garage! Just be ready to open your garage at 7 AM on November 3rd. To help increase traffic to your home, we suggest that you place signs at the end of your street.

Don’t forget to take them down afterwards.

We’ll be creating a map of all the garage sales in the community.

To be added to the map, please email your address to mevrard@ canyongate.com and include a short list (five words or less) of the types of items you are selling. No additions will be accepted after Wednesday, October 31st. The maps will be handed out at the onsite office located at SplashPad Texas the day of the event.

November 2012 One winner will be chosen from each section. Winners will receive a prize and a “Holiday Yard Contest Winner” sign to display in the front of their homes during the month of December.

Holiday Yard Decorating Contest December 9th - 15th:

We’re hosting a Toys for Tots Toy Drive! If you’d like to contribute, please bring a NEW, UNWRAPPED toy to the Westheimer Lakes North Clubhouse.

We will be having our annual “Holiday Yard Decorating Contest” during the week of Sunday, December 9th through Saturday, December 15th. No formal registration is required. Participants need to only keep their Christmas lights on every night during that week.

Fireworks Prohibition in the Deed Restrictions

The Board asks that residents refrain from celebrating holidays with the use of fireworks and fireworks display. This not only poses a nuisance and disturbance to your neighbors, it also leaves a messy aftermath to be cleaned up. Thank you for helping to keep Westheimer Lakes community fireworks free!

Rules of the Road for Westheimer Lakes and Westheimer Lakes North

This is a reminder…. The operation of motorized vehicles (ATV’s, dirt bikes, golf carts, etc.) other than mowing equipment on pathways or trails maintained by the Association or any other Common Area within the community is not allowed.

According to the Texas department of public safety: • ATV’s are not allowed on a street and an operator crossing a street must have a valid driver’s license.

• Golf carts are allowed on roads, but must obey all traffic laws including speed limits.

If operated on a road the golf cart must have a license plate and the driver must have a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

• Mopeds and motor assisted scooters are treated as regular bicycles. All vehicles used on roads must obey traffic laws including stop signs and speed limits. For additional information on this subject go to www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/pages/Electric.htm.

Vandalism In Community

In the past, Westheimer Lakes has been the target of numerous acts of vandalism. The POA believes that some of this vandalism may be occurring from individuals in the community. When items such as street signs, park signs, windows, lights are in need of replacement as result of this vandalism, your POA bears this expense. As a reminder, please beware of your surroundings and should you see any suspicious activity in the community please contact the Sherriff’s department (281-341-4665) immediately.

Golf Balls

KEEP OUR LAKES CLEAN

Hitting golf balls is meant for the golf course only. It can cause damage not only to personal property but to people as well. Please respect your neighbors and refrain from hitting golf balls inside the community.

Please help us keep our community beautiful by NOT THROWING trash and debris around or into the lakes. In addition, there is NO SWIMMING, BOATING OR FISHING in the LAKES.

No Trespassing on Residents Private Property

Please help us keep our community clean by NOT DUMPING trash and debris onto empty lots. Neighbors please report violators and be ready to provide license plate number and photo or any other pertinent information.

There have been complaints about children crossing through residents’ private yards to get to the facilities.

Please let children know that they cannot cross private property. If this should occur more than once, we ask homeowners’ to contact the proper authorities.

Basketball Goals

Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway. Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street.

Please note this is also a violation of deed restrictions and if you receive violation letters regarding this matter you could be sent to the attorney and be liable for those charges.

Unwanted Solicitors

NO SOLICITING signs are posted throughout the entrances of the community. If this continues to be a growing issue at your residence and would like to place a NO SOLICITING sign in your yard, you may certainly do so. Please be sure that the sign is placed by your front door and place only (1) sign at your home.

If you feel in danger and think the solicitor will be in the community long enough to call the authorities, we suggest you call the local Police Department.

CANYON GATE ATTENDANT SERVICES

Hours of operation are 24/7 Sunday thru Saturday. The gate attendant’s office is located at the entrance to Canyon Gate at Westheimer Lakes on Idlewood Crossing Dr.

Canyon Gate EZ Tag Lane Access

Please be patient when approaching the EZ Tag barrier arm and obey the signs.

After stopping at the stop sign, proceed slowly and wait until the barrier arm opens fully. Bumping or hitting the barrier arm causes costly and unnecesary repairs to the Association.

If there is a car in front of you, please remain at the stop sign until the car has gone through the arm and the arm is closed. The barrier arm closes after each vehicle every time.

Westheimer Lakes – Gate Attendant Entry TIPS

• EZ TAG LANE (RIGHT LANE) is for EZ Tag stickered vehicles ONLY that are residents and have registered at the onsite office.

• Residents with a Westheimer Lakes vehicle windshield sticker must enter by way of the Gate attendant only. (2 lanes under the cover).

• Visitors must enter through the visitor lane (far left lane) nearest the building and must be signed in by the Gate attendant. If the gate attendant is not on duty, the EZ tag lane is left open and visitors can enter the community. * Contact the SplashPad Texas onsite office at 832-222-2355 to register or for more general information *

CANYON SPRINGS AND CANYON FALLS SECTION UPDATES

The Canyon Springs and Canyon Falls Gates EZ Tag Entry lanes are for registered resident entry only via electronic EZ Tags (Harris County EZ TAG or Community fast pass tags for community use only). Electronic entry tags, including credit card size Access Cards and telephone home number registration services are available to all Canyon Springs and Canyon Falls residents at the SplashPad office from 9 AM until 5 PM, Tuesday through Saturday. Call 832-222-2355 for more details.

The entry will remain open during the day while sales and construction of new homes are in operation and gates will close at night.

The gated areas may be accessed three (3) ways; with EZ Tag or fast pass tags, Access Card (reader is located at the dial up box in the left lane) or you may dial the home code on the telephone 10 key pad. If someone is home to answer, access may then be granted. If you experience difficulty, the gate attendant’s office may be called by pressing #0001 on the 10 keypad.

In the event the gates do not open, please call the gate attendant and they can open the gate during the evening hours of 7 PM until 7 AM. Report all gate malfunctions to either 832-222-2650 or at 832-222-2355, if no one is available, please leave a message with your name, phone number and a brief description of the situation.

The gate repairs will be called into the gate service company.

Deed Restriction Process

1st letter: Notifying owner of violation and giving them (30 days) to cease and desist. (Legally no further letters can go out for this violation until the (30 days) has expired.)

2nd letter: After the (30 days) has expired from the 1st letter a 2nd letter notifying the owner of violation will be sent. (Please note that depending on what the violation is the board can send the account to the attorney when the (30 days) has expired from this letter.)

3rd letter: This letter is optional to the board and depending on what the violation is they do not always feel the need to send a 3rd letter.

Garbage collection days are: Wednesday and Saturday. Trash containers must be at curb by 7 AM on Wednesdays and Saturdays. * Holidays - when the pickup day falls on a holiday there will be no trash pickup that day and instead will be picked up on the next scheduled pickup day.

South Pacific is a classic musical by Rogers and Hammerstein considered by critics to be among the greatest musicals of the Twentieth Century. The show won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950 and ten Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Score. It’s the only musical ever to have won all four Tony Awards for acting. Recently, in 2008, it won an additional seven Tony’s; including Best Musical Revival. The show takes place on a South Pacific Island during World War II at a U.S. Naval Base where love blooms between a young American Nurse and a French Plantation Owner. While on the island, their love faces hardships as war breaks loose and the couple must decide if true love truly can prevail and conquer all.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS POPE JOHN CC INVITATIONAL Pope John’s cross-country team hosted our first-ever meet, the Lion Pride Invitational. 716 runners from 44 schools competed in eight different categories - from high school varsity 5k to an elementary school 1 mile run. The meet, which was organized by Coach Hilda Gonzales and a group of cross-country team parents, was held on the Pope John campus and garnered much praise from both competitors and coaches.

Our Lion runners did the school proud too, with the Girls Varsity team of Kara Christopherson, Maria Gonzales, Brandie Guice, Bethany Villafranca, Bethany Vuyk and Emily Yoder taking home the 3rd place trophy.

Two Varsity boys won individual medals: Cameron Guice placed 6th, running the 5K course in 18 minutes 15 seconds and Dylan Brokmeyer was 19th with a time of 19:10.

Four Varsity girls won individual medals: Maria Gonzales placed 2nd, running the 5K in 19:38. Emily Yoder was 5th with a 20:51. Brandie Guice, competing in her first Varsity race, was 15th, with a time of 22:25 and Bethany Vuyk placed 16th, with a 22:30.

The boys Varsity team of Dylan Brokmeyer, J.P. Gonzales, Cameron Guice, Noah Hearn and Austin Morrison was 5th.

Michael Alexander, Josh Chavez, Chris Davidson, Osa Imoisi, Alan Lasater, Sean Reilly, Nathan Schmitt and Kyle Smith ran JV and our JV girls team was Kiersten Hofbauer, Hailey Justus and Jackie Lee. Running a meet the size of the Lion Pride Invitational took numerous volunteers. The school community stepped up to the plate, with many students, parents, faculty and staff willing to show up at 6:00 AM on a Saturday to help with the meet.

KISD GOLF RIVALS MEET AGAIN Eric Redeker, 2011 Taylor High School graduate and Cody Hebert, 2012 Katy High School graduate, squared off in the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational Golf Tournament held recently in Seguin, Texas.

Eric is currently a sophomore at Trinity University and Cody is a freshman at Southwestern University. Trinity took first place in the tournament, with Southwestern finishing a close second.

CrossPoint Community Church’s 2nd Annual The Outdoor Market & 5K event!

The Outdoor Market, a second annual event, that features vendors, craftsmen, household items, children’s activities and concessions will be held at CrossPoint Westgreen, located at 700 S. Westgreen Blvd, Katy, TX. The Outdoor Market is one of two events being held on November 17th. The first of which is GO 5K A Different Way, a race that includes a series of obstacles and “outreach” tasks where 500 participants will collect items throughout their journey and create care packages that will be delivered to persons in need at a later date. NATURE PROGRAM FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN Enjoy the outdoors with your child (age 2 1/2 to 5) at Audubon nature programs (called the “Titmouse Club”) offered Tuesday mornings, 10:00 - 11:00 AM, at the Edith L. Big Back to School and Pet Blessing enjoyed by Fulshear families!

When the launch team for New Creation Lutheran Church gathered to plan a first public event, they wanted it to be family oriented and fun to reflect their worshipping community. This goal was achieved at their first annual Blessings Event held the last Sunday in August.

Entire families, including pets, came to the Cornelius’ home on James Lane in Fulshear to receive blessings for the new school year!

Teachers representing three districts were blessed. Families with roots in Ecuador and Colombia were included, possibly drawn by the launch team’s previous experience supporting education for street children in Peru. Dogs of many breeds romped together, including one retriever who repeatedly jumped into the swimming pool.

Thanks to a grant from Fort Bend Thrivent Financial, there were hot dogs to eat and games to play. A large inflatable proved to be the most popular activity. At the end of the day, children left for home with a gift bag, a Bible verse and a smile. All were invited back at a later date for New Creation’s first worship service with Pastor Dale Olson.

Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience.

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return.

If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.

• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program.

VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf.

It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.

• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away.

• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth.

• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.
