One day he saw a picture of weather balloons in the newspapers and got an idea. He went to the shop, bought 45 weather balloons and several tanks of helium. He took a garden chair, tied the balloons to it and filled the balloons with helium. He made sandwiches and took an airgun because he had planned to land the chair by shooting the balloons one by one. But things went terribly wrong. When his friends cut the string which had tied his chair to the jeep, his chair rised much higher than he had originally planned. He reached the height of almost 3 miles. He was afraid to shoot the balloons, so he went on drifting towards the corridor of Long Beach airport. One of the pilots saw him and reported to the traffic control that there was a man floating in a garden chair with an airgun in his hand above the airport. The traffic controller don't believe it at first but when he heard the same message from another pilot he decided to take action.
In the meantime, Lawrence's balloons got caught in a power line which caused a blackout in a Long Beach neighbourhood.

MULTICULTURALISM IN THE UK
The traditional image of the United Kingdom is of a country with a mainly white population. Although white people make up over 90% of the UK population, there are also many other groups living in Britain, who make up nearly 10% of the population. The largest ETHNIC group is Asian, and they are over 4% of the population. Included in this group are people from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The other main groups are Afro-Caribbean, African, Arabic, and Chinese.
There are approximately 4.5 million non-white people living in Britain, and about 80% live in large cities in England. Most live in London, Manchester, Birmingham or Leeds, or in areas close to these cities. In London, almost 30% of the population are Asian and black. Immigration to the UK increased greatly after World War II. During the 1950s, the country was still rebuilding its economy after the war. It needed workers for the factories, and for the hospitals of the new National Health Service. Immigrants were encouraged to come to Britain to take up these jobs. Many came from Ireland and from countries that were part of the former British Empire, especially the West Indies, India, and Pakistan. Immigrants from these Commonwealth countries held a British passport and had the right to British citizenship. At first, they were considered to be different and not everyone welcomed them. In the 1970s, a law was passed which made it illegal to treat black people differently from anyone else.
Now, 50 years later, the children and grandchildren of the earlier immigrants are wellestablished members of British society.

2 Complete the text with the information from the box. London has a population of 7,5 million. But what kind of city is it to live in? Well, it's a huge city, full of fun and history, and famous for its diversity and culture. London was the world's most visited city in 2006 with over 15 million tourists and it's an exciting mix of creativity, history and fun.
As for its beginnings, originally, an ancient tribe called the Celts built a settlement here on the river. The Romans made it the capital, after invading in 43 AD, and called it Londinium. By the 3rd century the population was about 30,000.
After the Romans left, in 410 AD, the Vikings, Angles and Saxons moved in, followed by the Norman invasion of 1066. They then began to build hundreds of cathedrals and castles, including the Tower of London.
In 1300, a plague killed at least one third of the inhabitants. It struck again in 1600 and this time over 100 000 people died. Catastrophe hit again in 1666, when the Great Fire of London burnt down most of the old, medieval buildings. So the city was then re-designed and Shakespear's playhouse was built. By 1700 it was Europe's largest city, with over 600,000 people living, working and trading in it.
London grew very rich in Queen Victoria's reign, from 1837, through trade in tea, coffee and sugar, and then because of the Industrial Revolution. By her death in 1901 the population had risen to 6.6 million.
In the World War 2 London was badly bombed and afterwards some unattractive buildings were put up. But gradually London became prosperous again, architecture and modern design flourished and it grew into the lively, multicultural centre it is today. There are so many great places to visit. Just walk along the river Thames from Tower Bridge and visit the Tate Modern gallery, the Globe Theatre, site of St. Paul's Cathedral, stop off at the London Eye and walk over to Westminster Palace. Or, take a cruise to Greenwich and the Observatory, or down to Hampton Court Palace, visiting Kew Gardens on the way. There's so much more to do too. The British and Kensington Museums, the markets, and Covent Garden, home of the Opera House, are all a must, as well as the West End for shows and shopping!
