Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a classic love story. The 1965 film was adapted from the novel that was written in 1911 by Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi. The basic plot is the story of Ivan and Marichka who fall in love, despite belonging to enemy Hutsul families. After Marichka’s tragic death, Ivan marries Palagna but he never gets over Marichka, who is his true love. Director Serhii Parajanov showed the Carpathian Mountains and forests as a land of fantasy, where people have a special relationship with nature and one another. The filming style, which is almost like a documentary, has many impressive camera shots, especially when you remember that it was made in 1964. The way that the characters feel is shown through the use of colour and the movement of the camera. The soundtrack, which is based on Ukrainian folk music, is the perfect partner for this story.

PROJECT: Plan a presentation about a famous Ukrainian film that you like. Present it to the class.
Mavka: The Forest Song
This film is from Ukraine. It is a beautiful animation based on a famous play by Lesya Ukrainka. It combines fantasy, adventure, and drama. The film was directed by Oleh Malamuzh and Oleksandra Ruban. Because it is an animation, it was not "filmed" in a physical location, but it was created in the Animagrad studio in Kyiv. The artists used real Ukrainian forests and landscapes as inspiration for the background drawings. Shkola.in.ua
The main characters are Mavka, a magical Soul of the Forest, and Lucas, a talented young musician who plays the flute. There is also a villain named Kylina, who wants to steal the magical heart of the forest. The film has been very successful. It won the "Best Animation" award at several international festivals. It is also famous for being the highest-grossing Ukrainian film ever made. What I like most is the soundtrack and the visuals. The music is very traditional but sounds modern at the same time. Also, the plot is very touching because it shows that love and kindness are more important than gold.

My favourite illusion from this unit is the duck and rabbit drawing because it’s amazing how my brain can see two different animals in the same picture. It’s also hard to make up my mind about the orange circles because they look so different even though they are the same size! Shkola.in.ua

Вправа 1: Ask and answer the questions with a partner. Задайте запитання
What sources of information help you stay up to date?
– I mostly stay up to date using internet websites and social media. I watch short news clips on YouTube or TikTok because they are fast. Sometimes, my friends tell me about big events, but I usually check the internet to see if what they said is true. Adults, like my parents or teachers, are good for school news, but for everything else, I go online.
Which sources of information above do you believe the most? Why do you think they are better than other sources? Shkola.in.ua
– I find that internet websites (official ones) are the most reliable. However, I usually believe my eyes more than anything else—if there is a video of an event, it's harder to argue with! I think official websites are better because the information is checked by professional journalists before it is published.

PROJECT: A campaign about fake news.

School Campaign: "Don't Be Tricked by the News!"
What is Fake News?
In a simple way, fake news is information that is created to look like a real news story, but it is actually false. It is used to trick people into believing something that isn't true or to change how they make up their minds about important topics.
Fake News in Our Area
Recently, a story was shared on social media saying that our school was going to be closed for an extra month. Many students believed it immediately! It didn't cross their minds to check the official school website. It was just a prank, but it caused a lot of confusion.
Why Do People Believe It? Shkola.in.ua
Some people believe fake news easily because the stories are often designed to make us feel strong emotions, like anger or surprise. When we see a shocking headline, we sometimes lose concentration and forget to look for facts. We often believe our eyes when we see a photoshopped picture, even if it isn't real.
How to Identify and Avoid It
Young people can stay safe by following these steps:
– Look at the source: Is it a famous, reliable website or a random account?
– Watch for "clickbait": Does the headline sound too crazy to be true?
– Search for the same story on other websites to see if it was reported by anyone else.
– Don't tell your friends about a story until you are sure it is true!
How Schools and Websites Can Help
Schools can help by teaching students how to use their imagination to think critically but also how to use logic to spot lies. Lessons could be given on how to use "factchecking" tools. Shkola.in.ua Websites can be useful by adding "warning labels" to stories that aren't verified. Some websites now use AI to watch for fake patterns and stop them before they spread. Вправа 2: Think of ideas by completing these sentences about AlChat. Придумайте ідеї, завершивши ці речення про AlChat.
AlChat is useful when you need to understand a difficult topic or find a quick explanation for a complex grammar rule.
Always using AlChat to create content is dangerous because it can give you wrong information, and you will never learn how to think for yourself.
If teachers don’t accept AlChat, then they might miss an opportunity to show students how to use modern technology in a smart and responsible way. While there are many reasons to use AlChat, we should not use it to do our homework for us or write our essays, because that is cheating. Shkola.in.ua
AlChat has many uses, so it is likely to become a normal part of our future lives and careers.
AlChat can give students ideas, but the final work should always be written in their own words and reflect their own thoughts.

AIChat: The Good and the Bad
Everyone is talking about AIChat today. In my opinion, it is a powerful tool, but we must use it carefully. Shkola.in.ua AIChat is useful when you need a quick explanation for a difficult topic. It can give students ideas, but the final work should always be written in our own words. While there are many reasons to use AIChat, we should not use it to cheat. If teachers don’t accept AIChat, then they might miss a chance to teach us how to use technology responsibly. It is a great assistant, but it cannot replace the human mind!

2: Work in groups of three. Follow the instructions for each student of a group.
In this painting, I can see two people who are having a picnic outside. They are sitting on a large white cloth in the middle of a green field. On the left, there is a girl with long dark hair wearing a blue dress. She is looking at a girl who is sitting on the right. The girl is wearing dark trousers, but she doesn't have a shirt on. Her back is turned to us. The style of the painting is very soft, and the colors are natural, like green, brown, and blue. It looks like a warm summer day because the light is very bright. In the background, I can see some trees and grass. Shkola.in.ua
Вправа 3: Work in groups of three.
This painting shows a beautiful scene with two main characters: a woman and a little girl. They are sitting on a terrace or a balcony. The woman is wearing a dark blue dress and a very bright red hat with flowers. She looks very elegant. Next to her, there is a small child, a girl, who is also wearing a blue hat with colorful flowers. In front of them, there is a basket filled with what looks like wool balls or fruit. The background is very detailed with green leave. I think it is a famous painting because the details and colors are very rich and realistic. Shkola.in.ua
1: Work in groups of three. Read the instructions below. Talk about different ways of becoming an artist using the pictures.
інструкції нижче.
A: Hi guys! So, our friend wants to become an artist. Looking at these pictures, what do you think is the best way to start? I think going to an art school or taking a class, like in the first picture, is the most important. You need a teacher to show you the right techniques.
B: That’s a good point, but I disagree. I think the fourth picture is very interesting. Photography is a great way to start! It teaches you about light, colors, and composition. You can take your camera everywhere and find inspiration in nature. It’s more flexible than a classroom.
C: I see what you both mean, but look at the third picture. I believe constant practice is the key. This girl is working alone in her studio with her own palette and brushes. To be a real artist, you just need to paint every day and develop your own style, even without a teacher. Shkola.in.ua
A: Well, practice is important, but if you don't have the right tools — like the brushes and paints we see in the second picture — it’s hard to get good results. A school can provide all those professional materials and a place to work.
B: True, but school can be expensive and sometimes boring. Photography and digital art are modern and exciting! You can share your photos online and get feedback instantly.
C: Okay, so we have three options: professional classes, photography for inspiration, or self-study through daily practice. If we have to decide on one best option, which should it be?
A: I still think art classes are the best foundation for a beginner. Shkola.in.ua
B: I agree that classes are helpful, but maybe practicing alone is better because it allows you to be more creative.
C: Let’s choose art classes. You get the tools, the teacher, and the practice all in one place. Do we all agree?
A and B: Yes, let's go with that!

Last month a class of secondary school students was given a half-day holiday by their school after their exams. Two of the students went for a walk but it started to rain, so they went into a second-hand shop to keep dry. All kinds of old furniture were left around the shop. There were bowls and plates everywhere and old photographs and paintings were pushed under tables. The students decided to look at the pictures to pass the time. Most of them were covered in dust. Then one of the students noticed a small picture which was almost hidden behind a cupboard.
It showed a vase of flowers which were painted in great detail. The picture wasn't signed but the shop owner thought it was probably painted about fifty years ago. The students paid £5 for it and took it away. Later they discovered it was five hundred years old. It was sold by a gallery in London last week for one million pounds!
