Read the text and choose the correct words.

Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is a classic love story. The 1965 film was adapted from the novel that was written in 1911 by Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi. The basic plot is the story of Ivan and Marichka who fall in love, despite belonging to enemy Hutsul families. After Marichka’s tragic death, Ivan marries Palagna but he never gets over Marichka, who is his true love. Director Serhii Parajanov showed the Carpathian Mountains and forests as a land of fantasy, where people have a special relationship with nature and one another. The filming style, which is almost like a documentary, has many impressive camera shots, especially when you remember that it was made in 1964. The way that the characters feel is shown through the use of colour and the movement of the camera. The soundtrack, which is based on Ukrainian folk music, is the perfect partner for this story.

PROJECT: Plan a presentation about a famous Ukrainian film that you like. Present it to the class.

Mavka: The Forest Song

This film is from Ukraine. It is a beautiful animation based on a famous play by Lesya Ukrainka. It combines fantasy, adventure, and drama. The film was directed by Oleh Malamuzh and Oleksandra Ruban. Because it is an animation, it was not "filmed" in a physical location, but it was created in the Animagrad studio in Kyiv. The artists used real Ukrainian forests and landscapes as inspiration for the background drawings. Shkola.in.ua

The main characters are Mavka, a magical Soul of the Forest, and Lucas, a talented young musician who plays the flute. There is also a villain named Kylina, who wants to steal the magical heart of the forest. The film has been very successful. It won the "Best Animation" award at several international festivals. It is also famous for being the highest-grossing Ukrainian film ever made. What I like most is the soundtrack and the visuals. The music is very traditional but sounds modern at the same time. Also, the plot is very touching because it shows that love and kindness are more important than gold.

1 What did your parents say when you told them you wanted to build a nuclear reactor in the garage?

– Surprisingly, they were very supportive. They weren't scientists themselves, but they encouraged his curiosity and even helped him find a mentor at the University of Nevada. Shkola in ua

2 Were you ever scared that something might go wrong or explode during your experiments?

– Taylor has said in interviews that he wasn't really "scared" because he spent a lot of time researching safety. He treated radiation with a lot of respect and made sure he had the right equipment to stay safe.

3 How did you find all the parts and fuel for a reactor when you were just a teenager?

4 What is your main goal for the future of energy?

5 Do you have any advice for students who are interested in science but don't have a laboratory?

LIFE SKILLS:

Сторінка 94:

Вправа 1: Ask and answer the questions with a partner.

1 How many hours do you spend on the internet on a typical day?

B 1 to 2 Shkola.in.ua

2 What electronic device do you use most often for going online? A smartphone

3 How much do you think you know about internet safety? C quite a lot

фотографії A-D з чотирма правилами. Наскільки

добре ви дотримуєтеся цих правил?

А – 5 B – 8 C – 7 D – 4

I think it is very important to follow these rules to stay safe online in our digital world. I try my best to be careful by using strong, unique passwords for my apps and never sharing my personal location or address with strangers. I also never click on suspicious links, even if they look like interesting games or "free" prizes, because I don't want to get a virus on my computer or phone. Following these rules helps me feel more confident and secure when I am using the internet for studying or fun.

4: Answer the questions. Use ideas from the text.

1 What type of information should you keep personal? – You should keep your full name, home address, school name, phone number, and passwords personal. It is also important not to share your daily schedule or location online.

2 What must you do if you want to meet a new online friend? – If you want to meet someone you only know from the internet, you must always ask a parent or a trusted adult for permission first. You should never go alone; it is best to meet in a public place with an adult.

3 What can happen if you share silly photos of yourself online? – If you share silly or embarrassing photos, they can stay on the internet forever even if you delete them. This might cause problems in the future when you apply for a job or university, as many people can see them. Shkola.in.ua

4 When can you safety accept friendship requests online? – You should only accept friendship requests from people you actually know and trust in real life. If you receive a request from a stranger, it is safer to ignore or delete it.

5: Read the comments. Are these people using the internet safely? Why? / Why not?

Inna is not using the internet responsibly because she posts photos of her friends even when they get angry. This breaks Rule 6, which says you shouldn't share photos of others without their permission. It is also not being polite or respecting privacy.

Daniel is following Rule 2 perfectly. He doesn't accept friend requests from strangers, ignores them, and blocks them. This is the best way to ensure your online contacts are only people you know and trust.

Kelly is being careful with her location. While Rule 3 warns against apps that tell people where you are, Kelly ensures that only her parents can see this information. This keeps her safe from strangers knowing her whereabouts. Shkola.in.ua

Samuel is breaking Rule 8, which says you shouldn't write nasty comments or be mean. By insulting people back, he is making the situation "really nasty." According to Rule 9, if he has problems with people online, he should ask an adult for help instead of fighting back.

6: Listen to Melissa, Justin, Laura and David. Choose the correct answers.

1 A boy posted comments about Justin on a social network.

Liz: Well, the card might be inside.

Becca: Yes, but it’s a strange shape. I wonder what it is. The wrapping paper is really beautiful. It must be something special.

Liz: It’s not very big. It could be a new phone. Did you ask for one?

Becca: No. Anyway, it’s hard at one end and softer at the other, so it can’t be a phone. OK, I’m going to open it. Oh, wow, it’s some of those brushes I saw in the art shop last week! And here’s the card. It says ‘Love from Liz’! I didn’t see you bring the parcel in.

So one day, Millie went to the house where Mr Scratch lived and got a job as a cleaner. Then she played all kinds of tricks on Mr Scratch and his family. The best scene was one where Millie put shampoo into a toothpaste tube. I laughed all the time. Shkola.in.ua
