Health Care Centre Information

Kincoppal-Rose Bay School’s Health Care Centre (HCC) is located on the ground floor of the main school building, adjacent to Student Services.

The Health Care Centre is staffed by experienced registered nurses who offer professional medical care and education to advance the wellbeing of students and staff.

Clinic hours are from 7.30am – 7.30pm Monday to Thursday, and 7.30am – 4.00pm Friday during term time.

Students resting in the Health Care Centre during these hours will be supervised. The School Nurse can be contacted on 02 9388 6042.

The HCC is fully air-conditioned and includes a four-bed room, separate bathroom and kitchenette.

Visits to the HCC should be limited to recess, lunch and before or after school. If students must attend during class time, they need to obtain a note in their diary from their class teacher.

Unwell Students

Senior School students who are unwell or injured must present to the School Nurse for assessment before they are given permission to go home. If the student is not able to attend class, they will be admitted to the HCC until their condition improves or it is determined that parents should be contacted to collect the student.

The Year Coordinator, Director of Students and Student Services will be notified, and parents will be contacted by the School Nurse to arrange transport home. Students must not contact their parents directly to collect them.

If parents are contacted by the School Nurse and their child is deemed unfit for school, it is the responsibility of the parents to arrange transport home for their child in a timely manner.

Boarding students who are unwell in the morning should present to the HCC dressed in their school uniform, where they will be assessed, treated and, if necessary, referred on. If, after examination, they are deemed unfit for class, they may rest in the HCC and, after an appropriate period of rest and reassessment, will return to class.

Boarding staff monitor student health outside the Health Care Centre hours. The School Nurse liaises with the boarding staff, ensuring staff are aware of any girls who may be unwell or require medication. In an emergency, students are taken to the nearest hospital accompanied by a staff member. Parents will be informed immediately, and arrangements are to be made for parents or guardians to come to the hospital.

Barat-Burn Junior School Students who become unwell or injured will be assessed by the Junior School Nurse for assessment and attend the students’ needs. The School Nurse will contact parents if it is determined the student should be collected. The student will wait in the Junior School Health Care Centre.

Paracetamol is the only medicine dispensed to BaratBurn students (with parental permission via the Student Health Care Information form, which will be included in your admissions pack). If a child requires other medication from time to time such as antihistamine or Nurofen, parents may provide consent over the phone directly with the school nurse. We also stock Hydralyte, throat lozenges and a small selection of creams if required.

All treatment is documented.

In the case of an accident or injury occurring, an Accident-and-Injury Form will be completed by the witness to the incident and the School Nurse/first aid provider. Forms are completed online and are sent to the Head of Junior School or the Director of Students (Senior School).

Infectious Diseases

Parents are to provide evidence of up-to-date immunisation. Students without an approved immunisation certificate and those who are not immunised may be excluded from school if there is an outbreak of a vaccine-preventable disease. Exclusion may also apply if an unvaccinated student comes into contact with a person with a vaccine-preventable disease, even if there is no outbreak at the school.

When ill, students and staff, are to remain at home. Exclusion periods are listed at The National Health and Medical Research Council website: www.nhmrc.gov.au.

Because there is no Isolation room in the HCC or the boarding houses, Boarders with an infectious illness will return home or stay with their guardian until cleared to return.

Medical Appointments

Medical appointments for the boarders are generally made by the School Nurse. If an appointment is made by a parent, they must inform both the day and boarding school and the Nurse if an escort is required.

A Health Care Assistant is available to escort young boarders who do not have permission to travel alone. Fortyeight hours’ notice is required and, in some cases (such as the escort being already booked), an escort may not be available, and alternative arrangements may be required. Some students may be granted permission to travel alone at the discretion of parents and Heads of House.

For appointments outside of school hours, parents of younger boarders (Year 7–10) are encouraged to make arrangements with a guardian or a member of your city family to accompany the boarder to the appointment as an escort will not be available.

Taxi bookings can be made and charged to the parent’s school account.

It is useful if boarders have their own Medicare card. International students who are not eligible for a Medicare card should have private health insurance. International students will need to pay upfront and submit their receipts to their insurance provider for reimbursement.

Medical appointments for boarders are generally made at Rose Bay Medical Clinic or Albermarle Medical Practice, both located within walking distance of KRB. More information about their services, doctors and fees can be found at www.rosebaymedicalclinic.com.au and www.albemarlemedical.com.au

In cases where appointments are made outside the Eastern Suburbs, it is typically the case that parents organise travel arrangements. However, in some circumstances an escort can be arranged. This is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Day students who have a medical appointment are asked to notify Student Services and the Year Coordinator, in writing, of the time the student will depart and/or return.

Medical Records

Prior to enrolment, parents are required to complete a Student Health Care Information Form. This must be updated online annually. An updated immunisation status for each child should also be completed at this time.

It is the parent’s responsibility to maintain their child’s immunisation status and notify the school of any updates.

If students have a condition that may require intervention at school, a management plan must be provided from their doctor before commencing school. Asthma and/or Anaphylaxis Plans are to be updated annually. If a current Asthma or Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy Anaphylaxis Plan is not held on file, students will not be able to attend excursions or camps.

Student health information is stored securely in the HCC and is managed by the School Nurse. Staff are made aware of any students with medical alerts and any intervention treatment that may be required.

Medications

General pharmacy stock for the school campus is provided by the HCC and may only be dispensed to students when required, if there is signed permission given via the Student Health Care Form. Any medication administered will be documented in the student’s file.

If a student requires regular medication whilst at school, parents are asked to liaise with the School Nurse and provide a signed document from the student’s prescribing GP/medical officer, stating the student’s full name, the condition being treated, the name of the medication, its dosage and times for administration. The medication must be supplied in its original package labelled with the student’s details.

Such medicines are to be stored in the Health Care Centre and dispensed as instructed.

Students are not permitted to carry medication, other than emergency medications (e.g. EpiPen/Ventolin/ Insulin) on their person. Barat Burn students are to keep one set of emergency medications such as EpiPen & Ventolin in their school bags and one set in the Junior School Health Care Centre.

Parents and guardians of boarders are required to advise the School Nurse of all medications taken by their child.

Boarders must store all medication in the Health Care Centre for safety reasons.

The School Nurse will monitor dispensing of the medications. When the Health Care Centre is closed, the Boarding staff will administer medication. The School Nurse works with Boarding staff to ensure individual student medical needs are identified and treated.

Vaccinations

The local NSW Public Health Unit visits the school three times a year providing vaccinations for Years 7 and 10.

Vaccinations currently offered include:

Year 7:

Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Vaccine – single booster vaccine.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – single vaccine.

Year 10:

Meningococcal ACWY.

From time to time the NSW Public Health Unit will add an extra vaccination series to the student vaccination schedule. Parents will be notified when this occurs.

Boarders and Senior Students (Years 11 and 12) are offered flu vaccinations and a charge is made to their accounts.

First Aid

School procedures in the event of emergency

In the event of a medical emergency, first aid will be administered by the School Nurse and/or first-aid-trained staff. Parents/guardians will be contacted if a student needs to be collected from school or if an emergency situation occurs. An ambulance will be called if required to transport a student to hospital and a school representative will stay with the student until a relative arrives or arrangements have been made with the family.
