krabi the beaches AO NANG BEACH at 20km from Krabi Town, is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches, a long stretch of white sandy beach with limestone mountains as a backdrop. It has a wide range of accommodation and services and the main shopping street features restaurants, bars, pubs, souvenir shops, dive centers and tour agencies, massage centers and spas. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. Noppharat Thara beach, just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and at weekends. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach.

Klong Muang beach is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get the so deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

Railay beaches are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvellous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, rocky islands emerging from the sea. Railay can only be reached by boat, a 15 minutes ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing course, hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. Neighbouring Tonsai lies at the base of a cliff that divides it form Railay West. Tonsai has a shallow beach with slow gradients out to sea which is profoundly affected by the tide. Koh Lanta beaches have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. Tubkaek beach is another real place to hide away; long, clean and peaceful, the area has breathtaking views over Koh Hong islands archipelago, and charming sunsets. From there you can venture inside the National Park and try a walking trail to a viewpoint and a waterfall.
The lookout point on Phi Phi Island has to be seen to be believed. A stunning vista over the azure waters of the Andaman Sea is the reward for the hike up. The shallow waters of the bays are alive with life and are the true image of Paradise.
the islands Koh Poda is the iconic island of Krabi and the first one you can see from the beach in Ao Nang. Hop on or hire a longtail, the local wooden boats with their picturesque prows and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters. Chicken Island should be next on your list as it’s right next to Poda. From the right angle it looks like a chicken you’ll know it when you see it! From where a walk on a sandy pathway that connects it to Koh Tub - which can only be accessed when the tide is low. The Koh Hong Islands demand to be explored by longtail boat or speedboat. The archipelago, a group of limestone islands with hidden caves and lagoons, is perfect for kayaking or snorkeling.
Koh Phi Phi - This is a MUST! Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life, caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the sand that Leonardo de Caprio stepped on while filming “The Beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay Koh Jum & Koh Siboya are small, unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. These islands give visitors the time to relax and re-charge their batteries. Koh Lanta, the developing island at the southern end of the province home to sea gypsies communities, where you will meet nature and tradition. A National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai and remote Koh Rok.
the nature Limestone mountains or karsts characterise most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the massifs of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools.
Tarnbok Khoranee National Park, in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 3040C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis in which to lift away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

The Krabi region has some of the finest scuba diving in the world with an incredible array of marine life beneath the waves. Colourful reef fish, turtles, rays, seahorses and even the giant whale shark are all visitors here.
Kayaking is a hugely popular activity in Krabi. The mangroves, caves & beaches provide plenty of great opportunities for paddling. The beaches of Kong Hong never cease to amaze with their crystal clear water and stunning white sand. With two glorious beaches, a lagoon and national park land, this is a real island paradise.
A hike to Wat Tham Seua, otherwise known as Tiger Cave Temple is exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately hugely rewarding. Once you’ve climbed the 1,257 steps that lead to the hilltop temple, you’ll be met by stunning views over the surrounding Thai countryside having been transformed into swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rain. Combine the temple with trips to other destinations like Sa Morakot or visit as a separate Krabi Town day trip and combine with trips to the market.
krabi Krabi is among the World’s best destinations for climbing. The Railay peninsula is home to the local climbing scene and is considered a Mecca for the sport. There are hundreds of bolted routes in the Railay area as well as rock-climbing schools that can provide guides and equipment. Railay, once the sole preserve of backpackers, has become a favourite holiday destination, combining 2 world class beaches, excellent dining and some stunning scenery.
Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets, with Krabi town boasting the largest covered market in southern Thailand. There’s a market somewhere every day of the week .
The so called ‘Emerald Pool’ is fed by a natural spring and gets its name from the glorious colour of its water. Perfect for swimming, there are also hot springs for soaking in.

kissing Public displays of affection are a big no-no all over Thailand, and should be avoided. No snogging in the restaurant please - or you will be faced with a sea of red-faced Thais all avoiding you.
dress It’s one of the great ironies of life that the one place in Thailand that has the best beaches, ocean and blazing hot sun, is also one of the most conservative when it comes to dressing. The predominantly Muslim population here in the South can take real offense to any tourist wandering into their shop with just a bikini on, or tiny shorts for the guys.

I know, you’re on holiday and you deserve that tan - I understand. But here, bikinis are for the beach and only the beach.

shoes Easy this one - take your shoes or flip flops off at the entrance to any indoor space. If in any doubt, look for other flip flops at the doorway and leave yours there with them. Resorts are the exception to this, as are most restaurants - but absolutely take them off if entering a Wat (temple) or a Thai’s home.
head & feet In Buddhism, the feet are seen as the lowest part of the body and the head the highest - both literally as well as figuratively. This means that you should never point your feet at a Thai, a monk or a statue of Buddha. Instead, sit with your feet under your knees or cross-legged. The head is seen as the most “holy” part of the body and as such, should not be touched. This means no playful ruffling of that cheeky boy’s hair or patting of kids heads. I know, to us it’s a gesture of affection. To Buddhist Thais, it’s very offensive.
royalty The Thai Royal Family is revered and there can be no worse “faux pas” than joke about the King. Some have actually been thrown in jail for making “uncivil remarks” about their beloved leader. It’s serious business and you should take note. You’ll see his image absolutely everywhere, which should give you a good idea of the respect and love he has from the Thai population. Just use common sense and you’ll be fine. If in doubt about what you should do in any given situation - just do what the Thais around you are doing and you can’t go wrong.

haggling Thailand is an excellent place to pick up some bargains, and haggling is expected amongst customers and vendors. Remember to take the “softly-softly” approach and don’t be aggressive. Smile and ask what their best price is and take it from there. Keep your voice calm and quiet and never, ever lose your temper.
buddha Sacred and revered. Even if it’s a ruined, half destroyed statue of the deity - treat it with the utmost respect and you’ll shine in the eyes of the Thais. Common sense again - don’t clamber up onto one and make bunny ears behind it for a photo. If you want to take a picture of a statue, please do so respectfully and, if possible, ask a monk if it’s ok to do so.

POST-CURFEW TOURISM GETTING BACK TO NORMAL The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to announce that all tourism-related businesses and services in destinations throughout the kingdom have resumed normal operations following the lifting of nationwide curfew as of Friday 13 June 2014. The lifting of nationwide curfew by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), currently overseeing Thailand’s administration, came after the council gradually lifted curfew in major Thai tourist destinations over the last two weeks, thus demonstrating the council’s commitment to promote Thailand’s tourism. TAT wants to assure all tourists visiting the kingdom that “it’s business as usual in Thailand” and that tourism remains unaffected by the current political transition period. Thailand is always ready to welcome tourists to come here to
BRAZILIANS THE NEXT THAI TOURIST MARKET? Kasikorn Research Centre says Brazilians are now a target market for Thailand’s tourism and could increase by 25% this year. The centre claims Brazilian tourists are a lucrative source of revenue for Thailand since they have high purchasing power and length of stay is over the average. “Brazilian tourist spend iBt57,355 per person per trip, or 30% higher than the average foreign tourist spending at approximately Bt44,016, though the number of Brazilian tourist arrivals to Thailand is relatively small compared to other nationals.” For January to May this year, there were just 21,830 Brazilians, who visited Thailand increasing 40.03% from 15,589 during the same period last year. Last year, the country welcomed 37,263 Brazilian tourists improving 22.63% from 30,387 visits in 2012 and received around Bt2 billion up 33.33% from Bt1.5 billion. As the current host of the FIFA World Cup Brazil is packed with soccer fans and expectations are high that it will boost the economy, Brazil’s central bank forecasts that its economy will grow 1.5% in 2014. If this happens both Thai exporters and tourism service providers need to sell in this market.

TAT launching a range of activities to attract tourists from Europe and Middle East Bangkok is now the fourth most affordable destination, worldwide, for a city break, according to a TripAdvisor annual cost comparison study – TripIndex Cities – conducted by independent research firm, Ipsos Mori. The Thai capital climbed two places from the 2013 study to become the fourth best value-for-money city, based on an evening out and overnight stay in a four-star hotel for two will set you back an average of Bt5,257, just Bt300 more expensive than Hanoi, the world’s best value destination. Bangkok has also been named the city with the most affordable hotel rooms, with an average rate of a four-star hotel at Bt2,779. TripIndex Cities compared the cost of an evening out in 48 key tourist cities around the world, taking into account typical costs for two people to enjoy a pre-meal cocktail at a five-star hotel, a meal out, taxis, and an overnight stay for two in a four-star hotel. Prices were taken in local currencies between 5 March and 31 March 2014 and converted into Baht on 31 March 2014.

British Expatriates and free National Health Service Treatment in the UK............ By Jerry Dingley
It will come as some relief to many thousands of British expatriates permanently living overseas that they may once again be afforded free National Health Service treatment and prescriptions on visits to the UK. This has previously been denied to them (with the exception of medical emergencies and those living overseas for less than three months) despite many having paid National Health Insurance contributions for all or some of their working lives in Britain, as the criteria for eligibility has been based on ‘residence’ as opposed to contributions paid.
The proposed change follows a recent in depth government consultation on the NHS and its existing position with regard to providing services to migrants arriving in the UK. Currently, to qualify for free treatment, all one has to do is ‘live’ in the UK regardless of nationality, and it matters not that no national insurance contributions have been paid previously. This has now finally been highlighted as unfair and discriminatory towards some of the very people that kept the NHS in business over the years – mostly British citizens who
were previously UK resident, i.e. living and working there, but who are now living overseas. The government paper ‘Sustaining services and ensuring fairness in the NHS ‘was published on December 2013 with the consultation period ending earlier at the end of August. The summary of the relevant consultation segment was titled ‘Consultation on charging migrants and overseas visitors to use the NHS and how better to identify patients who should be charged ‘. Clearly there was a distinction that needed to be made, and which is now hopefully coming to bear, between that of a British expatriate with a history of paying UK national health insurance contributions, and a non UK foreign national ‘health tourist’ assuming UK residence primarily to receive free and ongoing health care.
Sustaining services and ensuring fairness in the NHS ‘was published on December 2013 with the consultation period ending earlier at the end of August. An extract from the government website reads; ‘The response sets out initial decisions and next steps including: •introducing a new health surcharge for temporary migrants (including students and workers) •considering how to exempt expatriates who have paid National Insurance from being charged when visiting the UK’ The Department of Health’s consultation and proposal paper ‘Sustaining services and ensuring fairness’ also details the following paragraphs in its publications on pages 6 and 55 and subtitled ’How will different groups be affected?’; ‘All expatriates who return to reside in the UK will resume automatic qualification to free NHS services. Some but not all will benefit from exemptions if they return on a visit. We intend to extend this entitlement to any expatriate or former UK residents who have an extensive record of National Insurance contribution, and for this to cover their full medical needs.’
And to further clarify... ‘Expatriate UK citizens who move to reside abroad currently lose their entitlement to free NHS treatment. They regain this if they return to live in the UK permanently but usually not when returning to visit. In line with the principle that everybody makes a fair contribution, we propose to confirm the entitlement of any person who has previously paid at least seven years of National Insurance contributions.’ The minimum national insurance contribution period of seven years being the benchmark to gain access to free NHS treatment in the proposal should cover most expatriates, and although the precise timing for the guideline and procedural amendment of the change is currently not known (it is technically still a proposal), it has been slated for implementation some time in 2014.
There are thousands of British expatriates living overseas and many of them are elderly / retired and or persons of poor health who cannot afford private health insurance premiums (or even find a health insurance company willing to take them on). This proposal, if finally implemented, could be a game changer for those who are able to travel to visit the UK for treatment. It was my first Yin class and I found it really helped my hips which were stiff from running. They are closed in May and June 2014 but reopen in July. You are also able to dive from the top of the boat which is great fun. The cruise is run by an Aussie brother and sister duo who are more than hospitable, you can tell they have a great passion for giving their guests a good experience. The cocktails were flowing all afternoon and we were never left long without a drink in hand. The food was lovely and fruit was provided.

U&P Homemade Bakery has been around for a few years now and has secured itself a place in the hearts and stomachs of many locals and ex-pats in the Ao Nang area. Being one of the very few bakeries in town that bakes a good loaf of bread, U&P also have a great array - and display - of pastries, cakes, flatbreads, rolls, buns and even breadsticks to choose from. They have a fairly extensive menu as well, meaning you can get more than just a decent cup of coffee and croissant in the morning. Lunchtime is sorted with a great selection of western and Thai dishes - the sandwiches being a firm favourite thanks to the freshness of the bread being used aand the decent sized portions served up. Their early morning opening is perfect if you want to get a head start on your day, and the free WiFi makes hanging out here a longer pleasure as you can catch up with work or friends online. The food here is nothing short of spectacular, with people coming from as far as Railay Beach just to eat for the evening. Top resorts have been sending their head chefs here to see what all the fuss is about, and with good reason. Think duck curries and freshwater fish. Lemongrass and mango fused with chilli and herbs. Off The Grid: On Becoming a Simpleton by Emily Huang-Ramirez
In the first of a three-part series, our contributing writer takes a sabbatical from Krabi to chase a Muay Thai dream in solitude somewhere far into the countryside. I don’t recall a time in my life where the vegetarian residents almost outnumbered the meatatarians. It seemed at every break in the ceremony they were stuffing our faces with more delectable vegetarian dishes, and addressing the rite that I had unknowingly partaken in, and would receive membership in with wallet card to prove it. It’s a belief to eat from the earth and not beings with families, which is basically anything except plants. This familial perspective is a beautiful thought. While I dabble in vegetarianism here and there, I’m far from a complete convert. Many of my other meat-loving Nak Muay (Thai for Muay Thai fighter) companions were in attendance, and everyone assured me that this wasn’t a part of any religion, and judgment would not be cast upon us meat junkies, but it was just a way to pay homage to the earth and its mortals…at least it’s what I thought was said. After more bowing and recitations in Chinese, the daylong rite concluded and it was time to bless the village elders with jasmine scented water as they reciprocated with gentle benedictions. Perhaps an auspicious beginning to my threemonth long endeavor into the heart of Muay Thai, the perfume of the blooms on my skin irrevocably tethered that precious moment forever in my memory bank. On the flip side, I also don’t recall a time in my life where I involuntarily ate this much pork. It’s the new chicken

apparently, or at least it’s the protein of choice in Ban Thi Wang. In this whisper of a village just outside the city of Thung Song, a well-respected training camp whose fighters have graced Thailand’s esteemed stadia for over 30 years resides quietly amidst endless rubber tree plantations. It’s here where I’ve begun my chapter of deftly teetering between the other white meat, kinless organisms, Muay Thai, and nothing else…literally and figuratively, nothing else. The impetus to leaving behind creature comforts of the modern world was reaching an inevitable glass ceiling in pursuit of Muay Thai, and the fervent staleness that tends to accompany it. I had many choices as far as new gyms were concerned, but after taking a big swim in Lake Me, I quickly concluded that there couldn’t be a more romantic opportunity to break through that glass ceiling than deep in the simplicity and low frequency of the countryside. The hour had arrived to galvanize real change in a shaken-not-stirred kind of way, and so to the outskirts of cell phone reception I forged.

So here I am, a city mouse trying to hack it with the country mice, painstakingly hand washing clothes while bullfights engage in my front yard. Just a normal day! Customarily, I’m fond of furniture, cocktails, and sparkling street signs, but I’ve foregone the aforementioned for a lone mattress, books, tricky dual language conversations and forced introspection. Although blissfully humble and painfully boring at times, the abyss of rural life has effectively lowered the aperture on chasing a dream. As if posited somewhere over a rainbow, all of life’s distractions have been wiped out by a magic eraser, expunging toys, Wi-Fi, and debauchery and leaving behind the solitary confines of a pursuit. There’s a lot to be learned from this kind of simplicity. It’s a gift of growth to see how little can you live with, and whether it’s worth the quest. It’s one hell bent way of finding out how much I really love something, or if I just like it, like, a lot.

Like a page out of a dream travel journal, the community – both the gym and the villagers – have curiously embraced my arrival like a hot towel out of a dryer in the dead of winter. While there’s been loads of charity for the weird feral farang girl hospitality and invitations to share meals, this venture is not without its challenges inside the ring. After all, Muay Thai is a man’s world. Tack on the gaggle of pre-teen and teenage boys who are forced by their superiors to clinch with me (think standup wrestling in Muay Thai but with devastating knee strikes and throwing), and I’ve managed to make their pubescent years even more awkward. In the beginning, some of them understandably would have rather watched paint dry than try to navigate clinching something with boobs. This and other things are but small bumps on the road of tutelage, however.
And thus my pastoral debut has begun its intended rejuvenation as I move away from the shackles of profile updating and 7-11 shopping sprees, and prepare for my first fight for the gym, scheduled just three weeks out from my start at training. Sure hope my appetite is in the mood for more pork, cuz’ that’s what it’s getting. I’m certain these three months will one for the books.

Media sources from 12 of the southern provinces convened in Hat Yai to continue a long held campaign on tobacco control in Thailand. Radio personalities, journalists and other media representatives met to discuss the current state of the anti-smoking campaign in Thailand -particularly in the south -with an emphasis on how their direct connection with the pubic at large can further the cause. Thailand’s anti-smoking campaign began almost 25 years ago after following suit of Singapore. It has since been a steady progression of converting public places to nonsmoking areas, increasing public education on smoking related health issues, and advocating for policy changes. While other surrounding ASEAN countries have begun to model their own efforts after Thailand’s success thus far, proponents and supporters still recognize many challenges ahead. Current reported statistics cite the southern region of Thailand with the highest prevalence of tobacco users. Together with the Northeastern region, these areas account for the majority of Thailand’s surveyed tobacco consumers, which are estimated to be slightly less than 30% of the population.

The majority of those reported are male while women account for an insignificant number, and lower socioeconomic status is the biggest determinant of inclination to smoke, according to analysts. These statistics are based on consumption of all tobacco products however, the major products consumed in Thailand are cigarettes and hand-rolled tobacco products, also known as Roll Your Own (RYO) products. Because of the strong correlation between consumption and younger age groups, lower income groups or both, the main objective of Thailand’s campaign to reduce tobacco consumption has been price measures through increased taxes.
Higher tobacco taxes have helped Thailand in a myriad of ways by generating additional revenue, decreasing related morbidity and mortality, and reducing the expenditure of treatment of tobaccorelated diseases.
Numerous global studies have demonstrated the considerable effect that higher taxes have had on reducing consumption, particularly among the aforementioned groups. Higher tobacco taxes have helped Thailand in a myriad of ways by generating additional revenue, decreasing related morbidity and mortality, and reducing the expenditure of treatment of tobacco-related diseases. The structure of cigarette pricing and taxing consists of import tariffs, excise taxes, health taxes, local taxes, value-added taxes, and the industry’s profit margin; it’s quite complicated. In the simplest of terms, higher taxes means lower industry profit margins, and a variety of methods are employed by the industry in an attempt to maintain affordable retail prices. Suffice to say, the steady tax increases in the 1990’s and 2000’s (currently capped at 90% as of 2009) have had a measurable effect on reducing consumption, and lobbying for additional tax measures was the focus of this year’s World No Tobacco Day, which occurred 31 May 2014 and had prominent presence at the Krabi Walking Street. While other areas of the campaign are addressing weak areas such as underfunded or lack of accessible cessation programs, advertisement bans on smokeless tobacco products, and heavy tobacco industry interference, the indispensable role of civil society – particularly the media - has become a focal point for the movement at the grassroots level.
Almost 20 years ago smoking was banned in enclosed indoor spaces with air conditioning; ten years ago it was banned in air-conditioned restaurants, and only a few years ago in openair restaurants and bars. Regulations also require “Smoking Prohibited” signage to be appropriately displayed but
implementation is rarely enforced. Currently, the law for issuing citations to businesses that are non-compliant places the burden on citizens to take the offenders to a police station, rather than citations being issued on site. At the provincial level, this cumbersome method warrants a state of non-enforcement. Furthermore, retailers are prohibited by law to display tobacco packages at the point of sale, instead only permitted to display signage of tobacco products for sale. This also continues to be an area of high non-compliance –sometimes even at large, nationally recognized retailers- and very ineffectual law enforcement. While lobbying has begun to change this policy, it is still in its infancy, and proponents of the anti-tobacco campaign have looked for alternatives in the interim.
Furthermore, retailers are prohibited by law to display tobacco packages at the point of sale, instead only permitted to display signage of tobacco products for sale. Recognizing that local media has the unique attention of the public at large, the seminar served to shed light on the importance of local media as a means of connecting locally and furthering the cause. Together with the Action on Smoking and Health Foundation of Thailand (ASH Thailand), local media are provided the resources to advocate tobacco control initiatives on the ground level by receiving training in media advocacy, organizing events, providing educational materials and support programs.

More Than a Pretty Face‌ This past October 2013 Miss Janelee Chaparro from Puerto Rico was crowned Miss Grand International. She is the first to claim the crown as 2013 was the inaugural year for the competition. Emerging as a star after the Miss World competition in 2012 where she finished in the top thirty, Janelee quickly went on to compete in the 2013 Miss Grand International held in Bangkok this past October. After the competition, Miss Chaparro traveled throughout Thailand and was an influential part of the Anti smoking campaign gaining support throughout the country. A kind and soft spoken woman from Puerto Rico, Miss Chaparro was kind enough to take the time to talk with Krabi magazine about herself and her experiences in this past year’s Miss Grand International 2013 competition.

KM: What made you first get into competing in beauty pageants? JC: I decided to compete in a beauty pageant because I have always been interested in representing my country and inspiring people to excel in all that they wish to do. KM: Were you interested in beauty pageants as a child? JC: Not really, I just wanted to be a Disney princess like many girls in the world.Â

JC: You are correct - its more than just about beauty. Having the title also gives me the responsibility to promote a message - either your own or the organization that you represent. In my experience before having the crown, I was frequently involved in social work in my home country. I helped to promote education as well as supporting campaigns that collect funds for hospitals and the CAP Foundation to help people with cancer. I work with the elderly and the young. KM: I think that a lot of us are intrigued as to your lifestyle. Can you give us an idea of what a typical day is like for a beauty queen? Is there such a thing as a typical day for you? JC: A typical day for me is to talk with my family early in the morning, do my exercises, read the news, check my social network, and meet some places near of my residence. Parking on the sand all day to roast every melanin cell for that golden tan is a fantastic way to spend your Krabi islandic escapade. Never mind about skin cancer or that uncomfortable raspy feeling of sand rubbing between the toes. But there is only so much sun the body can take before turning into human jerky. Thus we decided to venture out of the bustling nest at Ao Nang Beach and paid a visit to Krabi Town. Located 20km from Ao Nang, it is not exactly near but definitely worth a day’s trip to experience the real Krabi away from the hyper-touristic waterfront.
As we rolled into the provincial capital of the island, a sign welcomed us with the slogan “Krabi – Lively Town, Lovely People”. It’s a promise that warms the heart. The city life scene is vast and the pace of busy feet are everywhere. Though it still meets the saying of lively town, lovely people, as the coastal town locals are exceptionally friendly undeniably. Nevertheless, the township that’s home to about 25,000 Thai southerners packs some pretty nifty finds especially during the night market on weekends. That is the place to be if you have ever experienced such places as Chatuchak Market in Bangkok, Bangsaen Walking Street in Chonburi province and the mini floating market which is in Hat Yai at Songkhla province. All are superb places to indulge in obsessive compulsive shopping but nonetheless, a new experience for any shopper or gawker. Now it is a cool Friday evening and we are in the heart of Krabi town walking through the famous night market or as the locals call it “Tanon con dern” meaning “Walking Street”. As soon as you approach the center point you are greeted with do it yourself painting stalls, hand stitched bracelets, custom made t-shirts, traditional Thai musical instruments played by children from the local schools, strange and interesting street performances, second hand books and knick knacks of various origins. Deep into the center of the market there is a bouncy castle for the kids accompanied by a big stage for local events, sing a longs, dance shows and promos. The food choices are endless. Sushi, corndogs, doner kebabs, fresh oysters, fruit shaped jellies, deep fried chicken, fruit shakes, sweet mangoes with sticky rice and coconut sauce, traditional Thai sweets, 10% orange juice. The list is endless and we could go on forever but Krabi walking street is a place you got to check out for yourself.

‘I left my phone at home’ It dawns on me. Riding the minivan to Krabi airport, the prospect of two weeks in Australia with no phone, ok breathe. It’s not as though I can ask the bus to turn around just so I can check What’s app. Chuckling to myself, I realise I brought this on, a few weeks ago walking down to the beach I had a rant. People were taking the time to sit and observe the spectacular, natural, stunning sunset-a spectrum of colours bouncing off the waves, the globe of red falling in the sky like God is putting on the finest display of beauty. But, was anyone watching?! No. I saw people on Facebook, playing candy crush, checking emails, selfie after selfie, then taking that winning sunset picture, uploading it so poor friends back home ‘like’ and then complain that it’s raining. Can you even imagine what you did before the smart phone? Think about the times waiting for a bus or making a plan to meet a friend and actually sticking with it. But, it’s not all bad, on the flip side rather than waiting in the rain you can check the bus times and avoid carrying an atlas if you get lost or are running late to meet friends.

This is not a criticism for the technology that makes life easier, e.g. the recently discovered app in Australia that allows you to book a taxi by selecting one close by on a map and watch it drive to your door. Genius! What strikes and saddens me is the use of phones to feed our social media addiction, in real-time
So, next time you observe the sunset consider watching, sitting, and taking it all in, experiencing and recording it in your mind. Be in that present moment, thinking about how it makes you feel, what it stirs in you, emotionally and physically and not instantly feeling the need to share the image with the world because how will they ever really see the colours, hear the medley of insects, feel the ease and taste the happy hour cocktail where you sit talk and enjoy with the people you love. When did it become acceptable to pick up and check your phone in the middle of a conversation? The world of social media does have its uses. It is an intrinsic part of my daily life, I use Facebook and Twitter regularly, connecting with people globally for my work and personal life, which helps when living on an isolated island, but even though WiFi does exist in every other cafÊ here, there is no compelling need for myself or friends to check smart phones when we are out. The most newsworthy topic regarding social media on smart phones is the addiction to it, the sense that people can feel symptoms of withdrawal. According to new data from digital marketing firm ExactTarget. On average, consumers spend 3.3 hours each day using their smartphones. One of the biggest reasons is to virtually interact with their friends. 75% of smartphone owners say they check a social network at least once a day from their device. Those 3.3 hours mount up into 23.1 hours a week, that’s an entire day on your phone with no sleep! A whole day for reading a book, or two or three, at least 10 films, there would finally be time for exercise or you could just talk to loved onesimagine building real relationships not cyber ones.

Britain’s Nigel Lamb upset Austria’s Hannes Arch in an action-packed Red Bull Air Race World Championship battle in the sweltering tropical heat of Putrajaya, getting an emotional first career victory. Australia’s Matt Hall took third in the first-ever east Asia race in the world’s fastest motorsport series.
Arch nevertheless moved into the overall lead with 30 points after the third round of the eight-race world championship that has stops in seven countries on three continents. Bonhomme, who saw his string of 15 straight podiums abruptly ended, is second overall with 25 points, while Lamb moved into third on 17 points. Lamb, who remains hugely popular in Malaysia after touring in the tropical nation as a display pilot for five years earlier in his career, gave his local fans watching from the shores of Putrajaya Lake a clinical demonstration of superb flying under the humid skies. Undeterred by the temperatures that soared into the high 30s, Lamb kept his cool flying first in the Final Four on the high-speed, lowaltitude track and stopped the clock in 1:15.023 – the fastest run of the day. Hall came close with 1:15.691 and Arch came even closer at 1:15.597. “I never thought I’d feel this emotion,” said Lamb, fighting off tears after getting six second-place finishes before in 43 previous races in his
seven-year career. “It’s a great feeling. After seven years, and all the ups and downs, this is the payoff.”

kohlanta lanta old town It was once called Ban Si Raya and was the commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It is a picturesque place with Chinese timer shophouses dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen dock their longtail boats giving the whole scene a very “Thai” look.
the lighthouse Located in Tanod Cape on the southernmost tip of the island, the lighthouse tower of Lanta is the perfect symbol of solitude. It is the place where immaculate nature still survives as it is rarely reached by tourists due to the rugged road conditions.
just arrived It consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of the tourist operations. Ban Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for newcomers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast of the island and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays are all nice to relax and swim.

fire shows This is definitely one interesting part of the Lanta beach culture. A fire dancing show is usually performed by young boys performing twisting acrobatics swinging burning torches and ropes lit on fire around their muscular bodies. A distinguishing show that sparkles in the dark.

sea gypsies Known as Ban San Kau, this sea gypsy’s settlement is based on south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.
nature Because of its bio-diversity and richness of natural resources, Lanta is a good place for trekking. Explore limestone cave chambers and passageways in the Lanta caves, or walk upstream to the spring water waterfall where you can swim in cool rock pools.
koh lanta scuba diving & snorkelling There are no fewer than 19 dive operators on Koh Lanta and most of them - if not all - will be qualified to take first-timers out for a fully supervised scuba dive. Dive sites nearby include the world-famous Phi Phi islands as well as the Koh Haa archipelago - all of which are within easy reach. The price you pay will generally include all equipment rental, lunch, fruits and drinking water and as a bonus, the dive sites and boats will be much quieter at this time of the year. A lot of the dive operators speak a variety of European languages, so there’s a good chance you can get an instructor that - quite literally speaks your language. If you’re dead set on staying well and truly within reach of the water’s surface, then snorkelling is the way forward and many of the dive boats also welcome snorkellers on board as well as divers.
thai cooking classes Thai food in the west is generally quite expensive, creamy and “toned down” in comparison to what you find in this country. Here, in contrast, it’s very cheap, plentiful and packs much more of a punch. Learning to cook authentic Thai food in Thailand is about as good as it gets, and many of the kitchens are open-air or even on the beach front - just to add to the experience. Classes are a great way to spend a morning or afternoon if the weather is a little wet for other outdoor activities, and you get to eat everything you make too - so you don’t have to worry about what’s for lunch!
rent a moped & explore Mopeds are everywhere in Thailand, and Lanta is no exception. They’re cheap, easy to operate and are hard wearing. In Saladan you can hire them absolutely everywhere. You might have to leave your passport with the rental agency, but don’t worry - this is standard practice. Everyone does it. It’s an insurance for them that you’ll bring the bike back, is all. Biking around Lanta is the best way to truly explore all it’s nooks and crannies, and you might even come across a few surprises along the way….
activities have a massage If the thought of even standing upright is just to much - congratulations: you have successfully integrated into the Lanta way of life. If you have reached this point in your stay here, then it’s time for a massage. If you have never had a Thai massage, you’re in for a treat. Unlike the more traditional notion of a massage, the Thai version does not use soothing strokes as it rubs scented oils into your tired body. Oh no. It uses a “pressure point” method that means lots of hard pressing, twisting and cracking of joints! But it’s not anywhere as bad as it might sound - otherwise no one would do it. It’s invigorating and totally relaxing all at once, and after a hour of this, you feel like you’ve had a great workout and your body will be rid of any niggling aches and pains. You can have it as hard or soft as you like - and your masseuse will usually ask you if the pressure she is using is ok for you, and will adjust accordingly. Probably one of the best things about getting a Thai massage in Thailand is it’s availability to everyone on any budget. You can choose to luxuriate in one of the breathtaking spas that Lanta has on her shores, or you can find a small massage hut somewhere. While the surroundings will not be on par with the spa’s, you can still get a great massage for a couple of hundred Baht, which can’t be argued with.
help local animals Rated on TripAdvisor as the No.1 activity on Koh Lanta, Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) is a non-profit organisation working to relieve the suffering of local animals through sterilization, vaccination and medical care. Its’ sterilization and health centre, which currently cares for over 60 dogs and cats, is open daily to visitors who can tour the facility and meet the animals. Whether you’re interested in taking a dog for a stroll on the beach (some of the dogs love to swim!) or are happier cuddling one of the many affectionate cats, LAW is the place where you can get your furry fix while contributing to a worthwhile cause.

KM: “So Pluto, can you give us a brief overview of the trip?” Pluto: “This past June myself and my girlfriend Lead took a Vespa trip starting from Bangkok and returning to Bangkok with the idea to go and visit more in depth this country that I have been living in for the last twenty years.” KM: “Can you tell us about some of the places you visited?” Pluto: “We went from Bangkok to Sangkla Buri first then we moved to the North up to Chiang Rai and from there finally back to Bangkok. We visited Nakhon Pathom, Kanchanaburi, Sangkhla Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai , Sukhothai, Pitsanulok and Ayutthaya. We decided along the way to make some changes to the original Itinerary due to the limits of the Vespa that we experienced since the second day.” ΚΜKM: ”What was your favorite place on the trip?” Pluto: “The most charming place we visited was Nakhon

They are really monks, shaved and wearing a saffron color dress like the men. Moreover, they follow a number of rules higher than those followed by the men. You can imagine that it was interesting to meet with them and that they were really happy to introduce us into their world. Nakhon Pathom is considered the gateway of Buddhism in Thailand and culturally, a very interesting place. KM: “Why did you decide to make this journey in the first place? What inspired you?”
Pluto: “Well, there were several reasons to do this trip: first my passion for the Vespa and for travelling in general. Then I thought that was a good idea to celebrate my 20 years in Thailand in a different way and especially together with Lead as a travel It was also a challenge for myself… to see if at almost 54 years I was still in the condition to make this kind of trip! But more in general just happened that one day, a few months ago, I woke up with this idea in my brain, I talked with Lead about it and we decided to finalize it as soon as it was possible… that’s it.”
In personal terms, the best memory was to enjoy this trip with Lead. She was a perfect buddy - always positive and extremely cooperative which made our relationship stronger. KM: “I know you said you wanted to do another trip can you tell me what’s next on the horizon?” Pluto: “South East Asia is a very beautiful area in general and we are thinking about making a trip in one of the bordering countries… it could be Laos or Malaysia. Always on 2 wheels, but I am considering changing scooter. Actually I have to admit that my vespa has some limits when you ride with 2 people and honestly I begin to have my limits also so, as the priority now is to take Lead with me, I will have to find a different kind of scooter for next trip, one more comfortable both for the driver and passenger.” KMΚΜ: ”How can people read more on this trip and follow you on future trips?” Pluto: “At the moment some pictures and some short stories have been published in our facebook page Thailand on 2 wheels but we are opening in a couple of months our photoblog which can be found on www.asianimages.net It is still under construction but it will host more details on our past trip and in for all future travel experiences.”
KM: ”How many Kilometers did you travel?” Pluto: “We travelled approximately 2500 km in thirteen days but I have to admit that it was too much. We had days in which we were traveling up to three hundred kilometers which become heavy being two people with the bags and as we had to reach a pre booked hotel within the day, it became a rush that didn’t allowed us to stop to enjoy the sights. KM: “What was your favorite memory from the trip?” Pluto: “I think that every favorite memory of this trip involved the great people we met among the way. The Female Monks, for example, their sense of peace and their serenity, their interior beauty; a Chinese rider we met in Chiang Mai at the White temple, who arrived from Chengdu, riding his scooter; Delio, an Italian man owner of a small guest house in Tak, thanks to his advice we avoid the eighty kilometers from Tak to Mae Sot in the evening, along a road that was very hard for my Vespa; all those anonymous kind local people that always helped us in many moments of difficulties, confirming the deep sense of hospitality of Thai People.

Relationships & Health by Zina Docto During this time of the year, love is in the air. People seem to be so much happier and carefree as the days are filled with sunlight and warmth. Thailand is known as one the top wedding destinations in the world. It’s also very common to see plenty of holiday lovers renewing wedding vows, celebrating anniversaries, enjoying their honeymoon or even being proposed to at a romantic hilltop restaurant overlooking the Andaman Sea. What a pleasure to be around so many who have or will someday say, “I Do”. I sometimes like to say that it is healthy to say, “I Do”. The question that I am often posed after this statement is; “What do relationships have to do with health?”. I’m going to show you how ‘relationships’ have everything to do with your health! Most relationships within our lives we find to be very enjoyable. Making our lives happy and looking forward to continued experiences with these individuals. Some, however, can cause danger or toxins to our emotional, physical health and wellbeing. You see, we all relate to one another on different levels, as you can access by taking a look at some of the relationships that surround your own life today. Some may be easy and others burdensome. We are going to take a look at how these relationships affect your overall health. Everyone has a need to be socially and personally connected - having lots of relationships that make them feel good and

happy. However, when relationships are taxing and stressful they will begin to wear on your health, primarily through your emotions. Once your emotions are triggered towards negative feelings like anxiety, anger, bitterness, worry and the like; your body will begin to give off signals or warning signs that there needs to be change. If you ignore those warning signs for long periods of time, your body will then begin to display those affects.
Here are just a few examples of what the body does when it is placed under stress.

When we are under stress the body begins to produce Cortisol, which is identified as a force called, “Fight or Flight”. When someone quickly comes from out of nowhere and scares you; this is the feeling that instantly happens when the Cortisol in your body spikes. You will get this instant urge of either running or fighting for your life. It’s all emotionally triggered and you have very little control over how your body will react. There are a few emotions that emit this hormone during those moments. Anger, hostility and bitterness are at the top of their class when it comes to producing the “Fight or Flight” response. Left unaddressed, the body’s immune system will be reduced, which in turn will bring you to a place of ill health, especially in the heart.
Meditate: Have those inner voice conversations. Allow your mind and spirit to engage with one another. Your spirit will never lead you wrong as it is the voice of truth and reason. Keep a journal: Write down your thoughts and feelings. Use this as a resource that you can go back to in order to address emotions that you may have ignored. It is a great tool to have as you can express yourself without doing anyone harm. You can return to the journal to discover new ways of communicating in a positive manner.
In fact, negative relationships can increase your risk of heart problems by more than 30%. There are a number of additional illnesses that are directly linked to stress; cancer, weight gain, intestinal disorders, muscle spasms, high blood pressure and more.
Serve: When you are helping others your attention is given to them and not to yourself. You are removed from the emotion of your own personal ‘drama’. Discover circumstances and relationships to be thankful for. And a reason to fight for the emotional health of each relationship placed within your life.—
When we are in relationships where we consistently experience stress, anger, bitterness, un-forgiveness and so on, we need to take the time to look at what we are going to do to make a change in that relationship. Some of the damaging effects that poor relationships can have on your health include heart problems, high blood pressure, ulcers, joint and muscle pain, headaches, chronic fatigue and even weight gain. When your emotions are stressed your body literally becomes acidic. When your emotions are free and your mood is elevated your body produces Endorphins, the body’s natural, feel good, pain-killing hormone. When stressed, our immune system is compromised and when happy our immune system is boosted. There is a quote I really enjoy that I believe simply sums up the difference between the two.

koh Jum Koh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint on this tranquil island. Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi from the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged in, has it lost its reputable unplugged character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past couple of decades? We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the resorts.

Folks come to Koh Jum to unplug; the island’s nature and culture still dominates the minimal tourist infrastructure. The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family run character, including the beautiful and tranquil Koh Jum Lodge, a gem of a place resort with wooden villas nestled amongst nature and right on the beach. Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. A great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harbouring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese Pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island amongst the mangroves. Resorts are located facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villages to remain authentic without any significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches. Access to the island is by longtail taxi boats located on the mainland port town of Laem Kruat. There is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi – Koh Lanta Ferry that stops at two locations on Koh Jum out at sea where long tail boats come out to meet passengers to take them ashore.

PHI PHI Paradise
Thailand is seeing a rapid tourism boom with no signs of slowing down. With that comes an influx of visitors to one of the most beautiful and accessible island groups in the world, Koh Phi Phi. Despite what you’ve heard, there is still plenty to do and see in the archipelago that fits every style; from partygoing backpacker, to the relaxation-seeking travelers. While the concentration of shopping and restaurants reside on the isthmus of Koh Phi Phi Don, peace and indulgence can be found on secluded parts of Long Beach, Laem Thong, and other areas of the main island that are only accessible by private longtail boat. Even in the midst of the crowd, nothing outshines the translucent waters, pearl white sandy beaches, and panoramic views of the stunning limestone karsts. It is indeed, one of the most beautiful places in Thailand. Koh Phi Phi Don was nearly wiped out in the devastating tsunami of December 2004, but the redevelopment was swift, and new building regulations limit the height of infrastructure so as to not obstruct the stunning island views. Only two seasons exist on the archipelago: the hot season from January to April, and the rainy season from May to December. The latter season doesn’t completely halt island activities, so travelers need not worry about low season shutdowns of businesses and activities as in other parts of Thailand. While most of Thailand is of the Buddhist belief, Koh Phi Phi has its own eclectic mix of Thai-Chinese, Muslims and even traditional sea gypsies. The majority of the population is Muslim, but the entire community lives harmoniously. This melting pot of cultures and faith means there are abundant celebrations year round. Visitors can take part in traditional festivities such as the annual boat-launching ceremonies of the sea gypsies, or numerous longtail boat races. The island also heavily celebrates westernized holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day, making it a perfect location for holiday getaways for people from all walks of life.

Not to be forgotten is the plethora of activities available for the active visitors, or those with families, some of which are unique to the region. Koh Phi Phi Don – the largest island - is the eating, sleeping, lodging center of the archipelago and although well developed, always as stunning as ever. Koh Phi Phi Leh is always teeming with visitors to Maya Bay thanks to that whatchamacallit movie , but there are two other islands to the north, worth the short boat ride. Ko Mai Phai is an islet that glistens with several tantalizing beaches, and Ko Yung has a beautiful stone beach on the east, a few small sandy beaches at the foot of the hills, and loads of vibrant coral reefs. A breathtaking view of Phi Phi Don and its isthmus rewards the steep walk and small admission fee of the Viewpoint. Of course, it is especially magically at sunrise or sunset, but don’t forget your torch. Surpass the daytime crowds and opt for a Maya Bay Overnight Sleep Aboard. See the infamous beach during sunset, swim with plankton blanketed under the stars (rumored to be one of the best spots to do so in the Andaman), and sleep in the wondrous bay blanketed by the cool night air. Some of the most spectacular Diving sites in Thailand are found locally in Phi Phi. A myriad of macro and micro marine life, caves and swim-through’s, and even a wreck site await beginners to advanced divers. There’s no shortage of renowned dive operators available to suit all levels and desired itineraries, including day trips and multi-day liveaboard trips. Forget the crowds on Railay and try your hand at rock climbing the limestone karsts of Phi Phi. Inch your way into tight-rope walking by venturing into a Slacklining, which can done on land or over water. Visit one of several climbing shops for more information.
With beaches on all sides suitable to any wind directions, Phi Phi Don is an ideal place for Kiteboarding. Whether experienced or a newbie, wind seekers can head to the nearest kiteboarding shop for rental equipment, certified IKO courses, or arrange customized tours. Learn how Pineapple Paper or Batik is made. Even tap into your inner artist and create your own unique Thailand souvenir by painting your own Batik textile. Go Caving. The humidity, the sea, and the porous nature of the limestone rock have collided over the centuries, forming a vast system of caves. There are many caves in the Phi Phi archipelago that can be explored, with some containing prehistortic paintings or bird’s nest swiftlets that can be partially visited. Enjoy a cocktail on the beach and watch a Fireshow. Talented fire artists toss, flip and twirl great balls of fire, even eschewing gasoline from their mouths to create the ultimate human dragon. Phi Phi is known for some very famous fireshows, and even championship matches that are sure to dazzle.

PHI PHI Activities Fancy a climb? Those towering limestone cliffs offer you a glimpse of what mother earth is capable of. Why get up close and personal with those beauties and go for a climb? There are many tour companies on the island that can assist you in your height seeking activities. Try deep water soloing where you climb upwards of 10 meters then jump backwards into the pearly ocean below! Pure bliss! Fancy a beach? Well you’re on an island!!!! One of the best and most accessible beaches on Phi Phi Don is Long Beach, just a 10 minute long tail ride from Tonsai beach (100 THB) or a 45 minute stroll through the jungle and you’ll step down onto the picturesque white sand beaches that make this island world renowned. Just grab a cocktail and let the day float on by. Doing nothing never felt so good. Fancy a trip to Maya Bay? Remember way back in 2000 that movie with young Mr. DiCaprio, well you’re there! From the limestone cliffs to the translucent waters of the Andaman bay there are no shortages of things to do to keep you and your loved ones busy during your time on Koh Phi Phi. Fancy a dive? Well the waters surrounding Phi Phi are home to some of the most vibrant sea creatures around, from the small yet brilliantly colored nudibranches to the graceful leopard sharks and hawksbill turtles, there is always something to see. Don’t think you have to be a seasoned professional scuba diver to get a glimpse of the wonders of the sea, much of what is worth seeing can be seen comfortably from the surface with nothing more hen a mask and a snorkel.

Fancy a little exercise and a nice view? Look no further then the viewpoint on middle of Koh PhiPhi Don. You cannot miss it, just walk away from the main section heading north and you’ll start to see some signs around, don’t worry if you don’t see anything you can always ask someone. The hike takes about 40 minutes from start to viewpoint two (which is where it’s all at!). Don’t forget your camera! Fancy a fire show? Skinky bar is where you need to find your way to my friend, with some of the most intricate and mind blowing dances with that attractive flame, this is the place to see what everyone’s talking about. They even do a flaming jumprope that’s open to all that dare…. Fancy a tattoo? I’m sure you’ve seed a few shops around the island and I’m sure you’re thinking, hummm I would like to get one. Well my friend Koh Phi Phi is home to some of Thailand best tattoo artists around, just remember think before you ink.

Viewpoint
Some would call it an upward stroll while others would classify it as a life-threatening hike. Regardless of fitness level, we can all agree on one thing: the Viewpoint is a never ending Christmas of one of the most beautiful views in Thailand. Reaching the viewpoint is fairly easy. From the main village on Koh Phi Phi Don, visitors can follow signs from the road heading east towards Ao Lo Dalam. There are also signs for ‘Tsunami Evacuation Route,’ which is the same path. The 300-meter ascension includes steep steps along a narrow, twisting path. The path is paved and well marked, allowing even the tiniest of visitors a chance to climb to an incredibly rewarding view. There are actually three viewpoints (creatively named Viewpoints 1, 2
and 3) along the path, with Viewpoint 1 being the climax. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with an overlook of the sandy straight connecting the two large bodies of Koh Phi Phi Don. The birds-eye perspective is 360 degrees of jutting limestone karsts, which are just as majestic as when visitors arrive by boat under their towering presence. The view is vibrant midday, albeit hot, but it’s well worth a trek up at sunrise or sunset. Once at the top, visitors can continue on down one of four trails that lead to the remote, uninhabited east coast beaches of the island: Ao Tohko, Paknam (Relax Beach), Rantee and Lo Bakao. The first three take approximately thirty minutes to reach, and about one hour to reach Lo Bakao, where hikers can continue onwards along the road to Laem Thong.
Long Beach
Far enough away from the crowd yet close enough to the hustle of Tonsai Village, Long Beach lies facing southwest towards stunning views of Koh Phi Phi Leh. The tranquil stretch of beach boasts translucent, azure waters with some of the best direct beach to water snorkeling found on the island. You don’t have to venture far to see vibrant coral and marine life bustling about in their natural underwater habitat, and renting snorkeling equipment is quite easy and reasonable. Just 200 meters out from the beach is a small rock barely breaking above the surface – Shark Point – where black tip reef sharks can be viewed. Not to worry, these sharks are vegetarian! Since this is a popular stop amongst tour boats during the day, the sharks are much better spotted either mid morning or early evening. From November to April the water is glassy and calm, but May to October sees rougher seas, so swimming is a bit more difficult at low tide due to the rocks and coral. The latter season also tends to have a stronger current, so swim with caution. The majority of visitors come to Long Beach to stay, but it is also an
easy day trip. A quick five-minute longtail boat ride from the pier will deposit you on the finest and softest white sand on an island chock full of fine, soft white sand. If you prefer, you can take the more scenic route by foot, either by clamoring over the rocks between beaches, or hiking up the trail running through the Viewpoint. There are only a handful of resorts and bungalows on the beach, ranging in price. Each offers deck chairs for sun soaking, with the more upmarket resorts boasting a beachside pool. At present, there are no independent restaurants, but each of the resorts offer fresh seafood and Thai cuisine, as well as standard Western dishes. As the sun goes down and night blankets the sky, visitors can park themselves on one of beachside resort bars to accompany the sunset with a cocktail. Phi Phi Don in general has a laidback attitude, but Long Beach turns it up a notch by turning down the noise. When the sun dips, the beach invites a mellow vibe from visitors in search of tranquility; a few drinks and cards or backgammon with friends is typically the way travelers close the chapter on yet another spectacular day. And for that random wild hair, you can always head back to Tonsai.

Past, Present and Future of Krabi Real Estate by Wayne Lucas of Exotiq Property, Krabi
Back in the 80s and 90s, Krabi was one of Thailand’s backpacker destinations of choice. Unspoilt, world class beaches and islands with cheap accommodation helped put Krabi firmly into guide books such as Lonely Planet. It was during this period that the popularity and stunning scenery caught the eye of several wealthy investors who could see the financial potential Krabi had to offer them and started buying as much beachfront real estate as they could. This was mainly
concentrated in the larger and popular beach areas of Ao Nang and Klong Muang. Post-sale, these buyers decided to either develop themselves or instantly set their resale land prices to a ridiculously high level. This meant that not only would they receive a very healthy return on their investment but also ensure that only serious, higher-level developers bought and developed this land. In the 2000’s, Krabi was starting to grow-up and various larger and more upmarket hotels together with further restaurants and bars started to appear along Ao Nang beach forcing out the makeshift wooden and bamboo huts. In 2011, Wanna’s Place guest house and restaurant which has been in operation since the beginning of the tourist scene in the 80’s, closed its doors for the last time and remodelled itself into The L Resort, a more upmarket luxury hotel. In the early 2000’s, the surge of tourism and development signalled the start of construction for Krabi International Airport in 2002. Opened in 2006, this new airport attracted the package holiday crowd further increasing tourism to all the major areas of Krabi. It was during this period that property

development really started to take shape in Krabi and land prices were now quickly on the rise. Several foreign investors were also snapping up property in the forms of both land and newly built villas which were incredible value when compared to most other nations. Fast-forward to 2009 and the brakes were firmly applied to the property market in the form of the global financial recession. This coupled with growing political unrest in Bangkok at the time meant foreign buyers were now thin on the ground and developers with large financial commitments were worried. Several high-profile developments in the province were either scaled back or halted completely. Many projects remained idle for several more years and sales of existing property and land has been minimal in this period.
Today there seems to be a large shift in the property market mainly driven once again by the tourism and rental market. New tourism markets from China, Malaysia, Singapore and Russia are all helping to boost Krabi’s profile. The popularity with the Chinese speaking visitors is allegedly all down to a Chinese language movie filmed on location around the province. Together with many other nations now emerging from recession, it is looking like “boom time” for Krabi once again albeit with a slightly different flavour! Today’s rental customer seems to be focussed on higher quality and luxurious properties but still at a reasonable price. Investors are also looking to these higher quality properties for both personal use and for strong rental
returns and the smart developers are taking notice of this. Some pre-recession developments prematurely invested into this luxury sector and financially suffered. Those that survived the recession are now profiting from the current market situation which is only set to improve. New condominium, villa and marina projects are all in the pipeline and developers are looking set to be quite busy over the next few years.
With the introduction of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2015, which is focussed on the economic integration of its 10 member countries in the region, this will result in further interest from developed neighbouring nations such as Malaysia and Singapore. The next 5-10 years will be an important time for Krabi as tourism is still relatively young in the province and the potential for investors remains relatively untapped. Land in lesser known beach areas is still available for a very reasonable price when compared to established tourist areas. However, it is also hoped that progress happens in a controlled manner so that any development doesn’t spoil the true beauty of Krabi which is heralded as a family and eco-tourism destination.
