editorial Welcome one and all to this, the 100th issue of Krabi Magazine! This is a great time for us here at Krabi Magazine and KitDee Media as we get a bit nostalgic and look back at the changes we have seen during our time here. Tourism has arrived with a bang since our first issue in it’s current format back in 2006, and Krabi’s face has changed drastically since then. Much like ourselves. So it seems like the most appropriate time to announce some changes of our own, as I step down as Editor and pass the baton over to Emily Huang Ramirez - our staff writer of over 2 years who has proven herself to be worthy of the position. So along with us here at Krabi Magazine, please join us in welcoming her into her new role! Change is good, and we continue to strive towards journalistic excellence in our pursuit of those interesting tidbits of info from Krabi and beyond. This month we headed over to Klong Muang to see a caravan/convoy/ flock of Ferraris roar their way into town as they take a pit-stop from their destination in Singapore. An impressive sight, and all in the name of charity, too. We discover possibly one of the best “Secret Corners” ever in the shape of a French chef in his small deli on the outskirts of Ao Nang and get him to knock us up a couple of baguettes. Five star cuisine for lunch? Yes please. For a day at the beach with a twist, we check out the brand new Andamana Beach Club - an eco place with its own private beach, freshwater lagoon, restaurant and much, much more for anyone to enjoy. krabi the beaches AO NANG BEACH at 20km from Krabi Town, is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches, a long stretch of white sandy beach with limestone mountains as a backdrop. It has a wide range of accommodation and services and the main shopping street features restaurants, bars, pubs, souvenir shops, dive centers and tour agencies, massage centers and spas. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat. Noppharat Thara beach, just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and at weekends. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach.

Klong Muang beach is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get the so deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.

Railay beaches are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvellous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, rocky islands emerging from the sea. Railay can only be reached by boat, a 15 minutes ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing course, hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. Neighbouring Tonsai lies at the base of a cliff that divides it form Railay West. Tonsai has a shallow beach with slow gradients out to sea which is profoundly affected by the tide. Koh Lanta beaches have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai. Tubkaek beach is another real place to hide away; long, clean and peaceful, the area has breathtaking views over Koh Hong islands archipelago, and charming sunsets. From there you can venture inside the National Park and try a walking trail to a viewpoint and a waterfall.
The lookout point on Phi Phi Island has to be seen to be believed. A stunning vista over the azure waters of the Andaman Sea is the reward for the hike up. The shallow waters of the bays are alive with life and are the true image of Paradise.
the islands Koh Poda is the iconic island of Krabi and the first one you can see from the beach in Ao Nang. Hop on or hire a longtail, the local wooden boats with their picturesque prows and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters. Chicken Island should be next on your list as it’s right next to Poda. From the right angle it looks like a chicken you’ll know it when you see it! From where a walk on a sandy pathway that connects it to Koh Tub - which can only be accessed when the tide is low. The Koh Hong Islands demand to be explored by longtail boat or speedboat. The archipelago, a group of limestone islands with hidden caves and lagoons, is perfect for kayaking or snorkeling.
Koh Phi Phi - This is a MUST! Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life, caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the sand that Leonardo de Caprio stepped on while filming “The Beach” at the now iconic Maya Bay Koh Jum & Koh Siboya are small, unspoiled tropical hideaways that have a unique atmosphere. These islands give visitors the time to relax and re-charge their batteries. Koh Lanta, the developing island at the southern end of the province home to sea gypsies communities, where you will meet nature and tradition. A National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai and remote Koh Rok.
the nature Limestone mountains or karsts characterise most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the massifs of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. Khao Phanom Bencha National Park at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools.
Tarnbok Khoranee National Park, in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species. Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 3040C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle. Hot Springs of Klong Thom, natural Jacuzzis in which to lift away tensions and relieve body and mind with the mineral enriched waters falling into rocky ponds.

The Krabi region has some of the finest scuba diving in the world with an incredible array of marine life beneath the waves. Colourful reef fish, turtles, rays, seahorses and even the giant whale shark are all visitors here.
Kayaking is a hugely popular activity in Krabi. The mangroves, caves & beaches provide plenty of great opportunities for paddling. The beaches of Kong Hong never cease to amaze with their crystal clear water and stunning white sand. With two glorious beaches, a lagoon and national park land, this is a real island paradise.
A hike to Wat Tham Seua, otherwise known as Tiger Cave Temple is exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately hugely rewarding. Once you’ve climbed the 1,257 steps that lead to the hilltop temple, you’ll be met by stunning views over the surrounding Thai countryside having been transformed into swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rain. Combine the temple with trips to other destinations like Sa Morakot or visit as a separate Krabi Town day trip and combine with trips to the market.
krabi Krabi is among the World’s best destinations for climbing. The Railay peninsula is home to the local climbing scene and is considered a Mecca for the sport. There are hundreds of bolted routes in the Railay area as well as rock-climbing schools that can provide guides and equipment. Railay, once the sole preserve of backpackers, has become a favourite holiday destination, combining 2 world class beaches, excellent dining and some stunning scenery.
Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets, with Krabi town boasting the largest covered market in southern Thailand. There’s a market somewhere every day of the week .
The so called ‘Emerald Pool’ is fed by a natural spring and gets its name from the glorious colour of its water. Perfect for swimming, there are also hot springs for soaking in.
World Tourism Day 2014: Celebrating tourism and community development
‘Tourism and Community Development’ is the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day (WTD). The theme underscores the potential of tourism to promote opportunities for communities around the world, as well as the role that community engagement has in advancing sustainable tourism development. The official celebrations will be hosted by Mexico in the city of Guadalajara (27 September 2014). This year’s WTD theme is ideally timed to contribute to the debate on tourism’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN development blueprint after 2015, which places a high priority on local participation. “Each time we travel, use local transport at a destination or buy products from a local market, we are contributing to a long value chain that creates jobs, provides livelihoods, empowers local communities, and ultimately brings in new opportunities for a better future”, says UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, in his official WTD message. “Tourism can only prosper if it engages the local population by contributing to social values such as participation, education and enhanced local governance. At the same time, there can be no real tourism development if such development damages in any way the values and the culture of host communities or if the socio-economic benefits generated by the tourism sector do not trickle down to the community level”, he added.

kissing Public displays of affection are a big no-no all over Thailand, and should be avoided. No snogging in the restaurant please - or you will be faced with a sea of red-faced Thais all avoiding you.
dress It’s one of the great ironies of life that the one place in Thailand that has the best beaches, ocean and blazing hot sun, is also one of the most conservative when it comes to dressing. The predominantly Muslim population here in the South can take real offense to any tourist wandering into their shop with just a bikini on, or tiny shorts for the guys.

I know, you’re on holiday and you deserve that tan - I understand. But here, bikinis are for the beach and only the beach.

shoes Easy this one - take your shoes or flip flops off at the entrance to any indoor space. If in any doubt, look for other flip flops at the doorway and leave yours there with them. Resorts are the exception to this, as are most restaurants - but absolutely take them off if entering a Wat (temple) or a Thai’s home.
head & feet In Buddhism, the feet are seen as the lowest part of the body and the head the highest - both literally as well as figuratively. This means that you should never point your feet at a Thai, a monk or a statue of Buddha. Instead, sit with your feet under your knees or cross-legged. The head is seen as the most “holy” part of the body and as such, should not be touched. This means no playful ruffling of that cheeky boy’s hair or patting of kids heads. I know, to us it’s a gesture of affection. To Buddhist Thais, it’s very offensive.
royalty The Thai Royal Family is revered and there can be no worse “faux pas” than joke about the King. Some have actually been thrown in jail for making “uncivil remarks” about their beloved leader. It’s serious business and you should take note. You’ll see his image absolutely everywhere, which should give you a good idea of the respect and love he has from the Thai population. Just use common sense and you’ll be fine. If in doubt about what you should do in any given situation - just do what the Thais around you are doing and you can’t go wrong.

haggling Thailand is an excellent place to pick up some bargains, and haggling is expected amongst customers and vendors. Remember to take the “softly-softly” approach and don’t be aggressive. Smile and ask what their best price is and take it from there. Keep your voice calm and quiet and never, ever lose your temper.
buddha Sacred and revered. Even if it’s a ruined, half destroyed statue of the deity - treat it with the utmost respect and you’ll shine in the eyes of the Thais. Common sense again - don’t clamber up onto one and make bunny ears behind it for a photo. If you want to take a picture of a statue, please do so respectfully and, if possible, ask a monk if it’s ok to do so.

THAILAND MOST POPULAR DESTINATION SEARCH AMONGST FRENCH TRAVELLERS French travellers retain great confidence in Thailand as a long-haul travel destination according to figures recently released by a leading travel website in France, which shows the kingdom is the most search for destination by online search engines. Le Quotidien du Tourisme.com (www. quotidiendutourisme.com) has reported in an online posting on 4 June, 2014 that Thailand ranked top in all destination searches made online according to the statistics of a French’ s most popular travel website “Le Routard” (www.routard.com), which recorded a total of 1.359 billion page views in the three months from March to May 2014. These numbers are all the more impressive when it is considered that they were registered at the height of Thailand’s recent political turmoil when there was worry that the kingdom’s tourist industry might be badly affected.
PATONG BEACH REGAINS IT’S NATURAL BEAUTY The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to inform international tourists and the travel industry partners that the famous Patong Beach in Phuket has now regained its natural beauty, following a clean-up operation on 9 July 2014 under the supervision of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). The NCPO, currently overseeing the administration of Thailand, has ordered eviction of food hawkers, massage huts, beach lounger and umbrella rental businesses and other illegal vendors in order to return Patong Beach to its natural state. The move is as part of the council’s plans to restore the image of the kingdom as one of the world’s best tourist destinations. It also followed recent series of measures and developments by the NCPO in an aim to help improve the experience of travellers and tourists visiting the kingdom.
While Thailand held the top spot in terms of searches, Greece came in the second place with 1.351 billion page views, followed by Corsica with 1.238 billion page views, New York with 1.222 billion page views, and Italy with 1.201 billion page views.

TAT projects visitor numbers from France to reach over 636,400 by the end of 2014. The TAT Governor said, “As a matter of fact, it isn’t just our French friends who are looking to come here. As the situation in Bangkok continues to improve, tourists from all major markets are coming back with full confidence that Thailand remains a safe and welcoming destination.”

VISA RUNS TO BE BANNED FROM AUGUST 13 Foreigners will be allowed to continue to re-enter Thailand on three consecutive “walk-in” visas until August 12, Ranong Immigration Superintendent Ekkorn Bussababordin has stated. The news follows the appearance of a formal notice posted on Bangkok Immigration’s website on May 8 stating that any persons who exit Thailand after completing a stay in the Kingdom on tourist-visa exemption status* are to be refused re-entry to Thailand. The order, posted in Thai, states that the new rule is to come into effect at all immigration checkpoints – including airports – after August 12. “We will continue to allow foreigners to enter Thailand on visa exemption status, but only if they have not done so three times before,” Col Ekkorn told the Gazette. After completing three consecutive stays on visa exemption status, foreigners must obtain a visa from a Royal Thai Embassy or consulate to be able to re-enter Thailand, he said. “However, from August 13, our officers will refuse any foreigners attempting to re-enter Thailand if they have just completed a visa-exemption stay,” Col Ekkorn said. The notice explained that any foreigner who completed even one “visa run” in order to re-enter the country on visa-exemption status was to have his passport stamped “O-I”, indicting they had already been “out and in” from/to Thailand. Any foreigner attempting to re-enter Thailand after August 12 with a passport stamped “O-I” is to be refused re-entry, the notice warned. The notice also explained that Immigration officials were targeting specific nationalities “such as Koreans”. Only in special cases will people be permitted to re-enter Thailand on consecutive trips on visa-exemption status, the notice read. Immigration officers seeking clarification on the new rule are to contact Immigration Bureau Deputy Commissioners Maj Gen Natthorn Prosunthorn or Maj Gen Chissanu Yuktatat. No contact details for the generals were provided in the notice. However, the Gazette notes that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), which is the Royal Thai Government administrative division responsible for issuing visas, does not clarify the number of visa-exemption entries a person may make. The MFA currently states on its website, “Nationals of the United States of America and 41 other countries are eligible to travel to Thailand, for tourism purpose, with the exemption of visa and are permitted to stay in the Kingdom for a period not exceeding 30 days. Therefore, you do not need a visa. “However, please make sure that you are in possession of a passport valid for at least six months, a round-trip air ticket, and adequate finances equivalent to at least 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht per family. Otherwise, you may be inconvenienced upon entry into the country. “Furthermore, foreigners who enter the Kingdom under this Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme may re-enter and stay in Thailand for a cumulative duration of stay not exceeding 90 days within any 6-month period from the date of first entry.”

Supercars Roar into Krabi
Krabi has been the hub of growth and attention in southern Thailand for sometime now. Last August the gentleman’s magazine FHM chose Krabi as their location for a photoshoot for their publication, using the Beyond Resort in Klong Muang. Then in December, Red Bull hosted the cliff diving championship finals in the Hong Island archipelago, and now it seems only fitting that supercars make an appearance.
The Ferrari Owners Club, based in Singapore, recently took a 1200km round trip in their impressive vehicles to see our wonderful province in an effort to experience first hand what Krabi has to offer. The drivers left from Singapore and drove all the way through Malaysia before arriving here in Krabi - their final destination. The roads of Krabi; set amongst the beautiful limestone karsts and notorious for their sweeping curves and stunning landscape made an ideal location for testing the handling and comfort of the fleet of over 30 supercars on their journey.

Vive la Foodie Révolution! There’s a new kid on the block this month that could easily be a serious contender for the “Secret Corner” spots that we feature occasionally here in Krabi Magazine. While we have found a guy on Koh Lanta who used to make his Pad Thai for the royal family, as well as “real” coffee oases in the most unlikely of places - this months find is a real star. A rather unassuming little place on an unassuming little road on the outskirts of Ao Nang, “Foodies Deli & Catering” is small but - dear me - perfectly formed. With just a few tables scattered outside the premises under the shade of an awning, this is a place that oozes exclusivity. Apart from the welcoming orange and yellow sign outside, one might easily assume that this could be another of the many Thai restaurants that are prevalent around the area. One would be seriously mistaken. This is the new venture of one Chef Frédéric Molinie. As his name suggests, yes, he is a chef and yes, he is French. Already, a French chef running a small, out of the way place like this had our ears watering and mouths pricked up.
Like the name suggests, there is a “Catering” part to the business, where Chef Molinie offers his services to weddings, parties, business meetings and any other event you can think of. This is becoming particularly popular recently, as it’s a rare thing indeed to have your party catered by such a talented chef.
Those few tables outside? Well, how about a spot of lunch whipped up by a French chef in the midst of the Thai countryside? From full French classics that range from steaks with mashed potatoes, to simple baguette such as “Jambon Beurre” - an innoccuous-sounding “ham and butter sandwich” that is much, much more than the sum of it’s parts. Think Paris ham sliced from the bone, with imported cheese, salad and - here’s the pièce de résistance - French butter. All stacked inside a hot and crispy baguette that he bakes right there, in front of you.

Din Daeng Noi, Nong Thale, Krabi Town 81000 Owned and ran by Gary and his wife, Bua, the Frog & Catfish is located in the Din Daeng Noi locality just a 10 minute drive from busy Ao Nang and is a gem of a place. The food here is nothing short of spectacular, with people coming from as far as Railay Beach just to eat for the evening. Top resorts have been sending their head chefs here to see what all the fuss is about, and with good reason. Think duck curries and freshwater fish. Lemongrass and mango fused with chilli and herbs. Sushi roll-style spring rolls with a 7-herb dip. You get the idea. They use locally sourced ingredients and organically grown fish from their own stocks. Entering the Amari we were greeted warmly by the professional staff who guided us to the beachfront restaurant where we were seated with the cool ocean breeze and a great view of the Andaman Sea. The menu at Bellini has a distinctive Italian flare and covers a vast array of items to satisfy any taste. We could choose from a wide range of Italian pizzas and handmade pastas, as well as selected cuts of Australian prime beef, and some sumptuous salads for vegetarians. We opted for some of their famous pizza and pasta, and it was to die for! Their commitment to using the freshest of ingredients and imported Italian condiments makes the difference - and the difference is palatable!
Beachside Italian flare with a decadent zesty spice, all that set in a relaxed comfortable environment, sound too good to be true? Not for those of us who’ve dined at Bellini, The Amari’s signature restaurant in operation for over 5 years. We decided to check out this decadent nook of culinary greatness, that is located in the Amari Vogue Krabi Resort, right on the Tub Kaek Beach.
Accompanied by a glass of excellent red wine suggested by the staff, the main course was delicious and only accentuated by the beachfront setting that added to the “exotic” ambiance. In the mood for something sweet afterwards, we were suggested the white chocolate mousse, a rich dark chocolate lava cake or traditional Italian panna cotta. Being unable to choose, we opted for one of each so we could share - a great tip for parties of 2 or more! They were utterly sublime and well worthy of any 5 star resort’s kitchen.

This month, Krabi Magazine celebrates it’s 100th issue in print, and we think that we’ve come a long way since the first colour issue in it’s current format, back in October 2006!. We actually started life as an A3, black and white paper called “Krabi News” before changing to full colour and a more magazine-style format. Over the course of the past 100 issues, we have printed hundreds of thousands of copies of the magazine and have continued to expand our distribution further and further, with copies being taken as far as the canals of Amsterdam and the top of the Swiss Alps, to name just a couple! We have trekked to the highest viewpoint and scuba-dived to the ocean floor to bring our readers

The Brassiere The brassiere was invented, “to point the small ones to the sky/to keep the big ones high and dry,” as Bette Midler so poignantly put it in the film “Beaches.” Thanks to New York City socialite Mary Phelps Jacob, the first patented design for a bra came about in 1914. Brassieres were peddled under the name Caresse Crosby before the patent was sold to Warner Brothers Corset Co. for USD $1,500.
Panama Canal World trade and seafaring were forever altered when the engineering feat known as the Panama Canal was completed in 1914 (it took over 30 years to build). Once it was completed in 1914 however, world trade and seafaring were forever altered. The Panama Canal allows boats to travel between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans in about a day, instead of having to sail all the way around South America. It is estimated that more than 800,000 vessels pass through the canal each year.

The 100th issue of the magazine isn’t the only thing interesting about the number 100. Here, some facts and lines to pick up women start interesting conversations centered around the number 100.
Bangkok, Thailand is at 100 degrees east longitude. The century plant, or agave, lives only 25 years, but blooms only “once in century.” A Centenarian is a person who lives to or past 100 years of age. The US currently holds the record for most documented centenarians, but Japan has the highest centenarians to general population ratio, with 34 centenarians per 100,000 people. Lava can flow out of a volcano at over 100 miles per hour. In Greece, India, Israel and Nepal, 100 is the police telephone number. Elvis Presley has been on Billboards Hot 100 list more than any other singer. As you focus on each word in this sentence, your eyes swing back and forth 100 times a second. Eskimos have over 100 words for ice. The body gives off the amount of heat equivalent to a 100-watt light bulb. There are 100 sweat glands in 1 square inch of skin. A female mosquito can live up to 100 days. Cats make 100 different sounds. Lightning can be seen up to 100 kilometers. In Old Norse, the word hundred, from which our ‘hundred’ derives, originally meant 120. The 100th most populated country in the world is Bulgaria. The longest car ever made was a 100ft-long Cadillac with 26 wheels, a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, a helipad and a hinged section in the middle to enable it to turn corners. The 100 Years War between England and France actually lasted for 116 years since it started in 1337 and ended in 1453. The 100 most common words in English account for 50 per cent of all we speak or write.

Towering History
What makes Krabi so unique, so special, so intense and dramatic upon first glance? Is it the people, the food, the beaches? Sometimes it’s the landscape of a region that gives us perspective on our position in this planet, its history and our significance. The limestone karsts of Krabi were formed 260 million years ago when a shallow sea, running the entire length of South Asia, slowly built up deep deposits of coral and shells which were later buried under large amounts of sediment that washed in from the land. Compressed deep in the Earth, these calcium carbonate remains formed limestone, the basis of these majestic karsts. This limestone was thrust up above the surface
when the Indian subcontinent collided with mainland Asia some 30 million years ago. From Gualin in China, to Sarawak in Borneo, the limestone created craggy islands on land and in water. In the South of Thailand, the provinces of Surat Thani, Phang Nga, Krabi and Trang have the most spectacular examples of this type of scenery. Limestone habitats have special characters. Rain water can easily carve through limestone which is a rock that dissolves and drains readily. Limestone-based soils tend to be drier than other soils and support a unique flora and fauna. The limestone rock supports little soil and vegetation is limited. Plants that colonise the karst must exploit every nook and cranny in which moisture is trapped.

Limestone is also cave country (in Thai “tham”, although sea chambers may be referred to with the same word as a room - a “hong”). When the roofs of islands or other coastal caves collapse, the prized, blissfully private beach and secret garden of an island “doughnut” may be created.
Even the spectacular karst environment is under threat from rapid development. The karsts of southern and other parts of Thailand are in demand for cement production. The rapid growth of Bangkok and other urban areas, as well as large-scale tourism developments has led to the destruction of many karst formations. Whole mountains are eaten away inexorably as they are devoured in limestone concessions. Some of these concessions have even been given away in national parks.
Caves are usually associated with bats, and Thailand is home to what is believed to be the world’s smallest: Kitti’s hog-nose bat (found exclusively in a cave in Kanchanaburi province in the west of Thailand).
The rapid growth of Bangkok and other urban areas, as well as large-scale tourism developments has led to the destruction of many karst formations.
Among the many plants which colonise the nooks and crannies of the karst environment are tiny bonsai-like palms and cycads (tree-ferns). There are even some species of figs which can colonise karsts, providing a favourite food source for primates and birds.
One can only hope that more benign uses of these magnificent limestone features, and a slowing in the pace of development will allow time for a change in attitude and a growth in appreciation of the stunning karst environment.

It started as a New Year resolution, to be kind and compassionate with myself, dismissing that inner critic (you know the one) and encouraging students to do the same in yoga class. Eating meat became less and less appealing, but in no way do I enforce my beliefs, wear hemp or have dreadlocks. I began to practise non-violence, Ahimsa, which is the premise that all living beings have a spark of the divine, to hurt another being is to hurt oneself. This is a belief of many religions such as Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism.
‘Bland meal’ This is what British Airways called my lunch. I requested the vegetarian option, I nearly choked on my mash potato, tomato and carrot gloop when I read that, then felt gutted because the woman next to me got a fabulous looking tiramisu dessert and I got three slices of fruit, one was warm papaya, delicious or perhaps, not. Being a Vegetarian is a minefield, not so much for the person, but others needing to understand why, when it seems completely fine to eat a Big Mac for breakfast-I won’t start on the ‘food’ there, but if I choose to eat meat or not, surely that is my decision affecting no one but me? I was recently questioned “but if we all don’t eat meat, surely the animals will take over?” because that’s what happened before we mass farmed our meat, isn’t it? 50% of global antibiotics are used on animals that are packed in factories in such close quarters getting sick, with no exercise, air, life, green fields, etc. A startling statistic, considering that medicine then flows down into the meat that is eaten by you. Personally, it was a gradual occurrence; referred to as a Pescatarian - someone who eats fish and seafood. This is because happily I would spend a day fishing and barbecuing my catch. However I could not kill a cow, chicken or pig, and lambs frolicking in the fields, well they are just too lovely.

Iron up The journey has been tricky. Acknowledging my low iron and low blood pressure, led me to discover a necessity to consider protein and iron daily or I will likely have an out of body lightheadedness experience and flake out. On the plus side I feel better, lighter and my digestion is happy, to put it politely.

Benefits It is now coming to light the benefits of plant-based diets to our hearts and a longer life, which essentially we all desire. In 2013 a news report claimed, “a vegetarian diet reduces heart disease risk by up to a third.” This was based on researchers who recruited nearly 45,000 people in Britain. They followed up with them for an average of 11 years, using hospital records and death certificates to determine how many of them developed coronary heart disease during that time and found, compared to people who ate meat and fish at the start of the
study, the vegetarians were less likely to be diagnosed with, or die from, coronary heart disease over the following years.
6. Almonds and Almond Butter
Between 6 - 8 gof protein, per handful. Almond butter is less toxic and allergenic than peanut butter, although the protein amounts are similar.
Want to try? Consider just one day a week getting your protein elsewhere; the recommended daily allowance for women is 45g and men 55g. For example, Greek yogurt contains the same protein as a three-ounce serving of lean meat, and with a handful of nuts you could get half of your daily protein intake at breakfast.

Any leafy greens will pack a protein punch. One cup of cooked spinach has about 7 grams, French beans 13 grams and peas 9 grams.
8. Lentils and Beans
There are also many protein shakes available and vegan (no animal products) options; soya, hemp, and pea protein powers are all brilliant for a good protein hit, especially on the go.
A cup of iron-rich lentils has 18 grams of protein, almost as much as three ounces of steak. One cup of chickpeas contains 15 grams of protein, as does a cup of black or kidney beans.

15 to 20 g of protein per 6-ounce serving. Dairy products are good sources of protein. A glass of milk provides you with 8 g, but Greek yogurt is a protein powerhouse with twice the protein!
Complete proteins contain nine amino acids that are crucial to human function and health, and are proteins we are unable to produce ourselves. Combining incomplete proteins will ensure your body gets all that it needs.

Protein Content: 6 g per egg The protein in eggs is the highest-quality protein found in any food. The high-quality protein in eggs provides the mental and physical energy families need for important days.
Spirulina is 65–71% complete protein compared to beef, which is only 22%. Two tablespoons of Spirulina is enough as a protein substitute for a meal.
If you are still not convinced, reflect on this; in a lifetime the average meat eater will consume 36 pigs, 36 sheep and 750 chickens and turkeys.
2. Hemp
Seed, 6 g of protein per ounce. Milk serving , 2 g of protein per cup. Hemp products are sold as a dairy alternative, it is one plant protein that also supplies fatty acids to boost your immune system.
3. Chia Seeds
4 g of protein per ounce. Though the protein content isn’t as high, chia seeds are an incredible fibre resource with nearly half (11 g) of the amount you need every day in a single ounce. Also, a serving is 18% of your daily calcium requirement, more than triple that of milk.
4. Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah)
185 g contains 8.14 g of protein. Quinoa is perhaps one of the most perfect non-animal sources of protein on the planet, and completely gluten free.
5. Tempeh
One half-cup contains 15 g of protein. Tempeh is a firmer, chewier cousin of tofu.

kohlanta just arrived It consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors travelling by road from the mainland pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai - the center of the tourist operations. Ban Sala Dan village on the north side of the island is Lanta Yai’s commercial center and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for newcomers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast of the island and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays are all nice to relax and swim.

lanta old town It was once called Ban Si Raya and was the commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It is a picturesque place with Chinese timer shophouses dating back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen dock their longtail boats giving the whole scene a very “Thai” look.
the lighthouse Located in Tanod Cape on the southernmost tip of the island, the lighthouse tower of Lanta is the perfect symbol of solitude. It is the place where immaculate nature still survives as it is rarely reached by tourists due to the rugged road conditions.
national park The park covers a marine area dotted with several small sandy islands surrounded by coral reefs. The headquarters are located on the island’s southern extremity.
fire shows This is definitely one interesting part of the Lanta beach culture. A fire dancing show is usually performed by young boys performing twisting acrobatics swinging burning torches and ropes lit on fire around their muscular bodies. A distinguishing show that sparkles in the dark.
koh lanta scuba diving & snorkelling There are no fewer than 19 dive operators on Koh Lanta and most of them - if not all - will be qualified to take first-timers out for a fully supervised scuba dive. Dive sites nearby include the world-famous Phi Phi islands as well as the Koh Haa archipelago - all of which are within easy reach. The price you pay will generally include all equipment rental, lunch, fruits and drinking water and as a bonus, the dive sites and boats will be much quieter at this time of the year. A lot of the dive operators speak a variety of European languages, so there’s a good chance you can get an instructor that - quite literally speaks your language. If you’re dead set on staying well and truly within reach of the water’s surface, then snorkelling is the way forward and many of the dive boats also welcome snorkellers on board as well as divers.
thai cooking classes Thai food in the west is generally quite expensive, creamy and “toned down” in comparison to what you find in this country. Here, in contrast, it’s very cheap, plentiful and packs much more of a punch. Learning to cook authentic Thai food in Thailand is about as good as it gets, and many of the kitchens are open-air or even on the beach front - just to add to the experience. Classes are a great way to spend a morning or afternoon if the weather is a little wet for other outdoor activities, and you get to eat everything you make too - so you don’t have to worry about what’s for lunch!
rent a moped & explore Mopeds are everywhere in Thailand, and Lanta is no exception. They’re cheap, easy to operate and are hard wearing. In Saladan you can hire them absolutely everywhere. You might have to leave your passport with the rental agency, but don’t worry - this is standard practice. Everyone does it. It’s an insurance for them that you’ll bring the bike back, is all. Biking around Lanta is the best way to truly explore all it’s nooks and crannies, and you might even come across a few surprises along the way….
activities have a massage If the thought of even standing upright is just to much - congratulations: you have successfully integrated into the Lanta way of life. If you have reached this point in your stay here, then it’s time for a massage. If you have never had a Thai massage, you’re in for a treat. Unlike the more traditional notion of a massage, the Thai version does not use soothing strokes as it rubs scented oils into your tired body. Oh no. It uses a “pressure point” method that means lots of hard pressing, twisting and cracking of joints! But it’s not anywhere as bad as it might sound - otherwise no one would do it. It’s invigorating and totally relaxing all at once, and after a hour of this, you feel like you’ve had a great workout and your body will be rid of any niggling aches and pains. You can have it as hard or soft as you like - and your masseuse will usually ask you if the pressure she is using is ok for you, and will adjust accordingly. Probably one of the best things about getting a Thai massage in Thailand is it’s availability to everyone on any budget. You can choose to luxuriate in one of the breathtaking spas that Lanta has on her shores, or you can find a small massage hut somewhere. While the surroundings will not be on par with the spa’s, you can still get a great massage for a couple of hundred Baht, which can’t be argued with.
help local animals Rated on TripAdvisor as the No.1 activity on Koh Lanta, Lanta Animal Welfare (LAW) is a non-profit organisation working to relieve the suffering of local animals through sterilization, vaccination and medical care. Its’ sterilization and health centre, which currently cares for over 60 dogs and cats, is open daily to visitors who can tour the facility and meet the animals. Whether you’re interested in taking a dog for a stroll on the beach (some of the dogs love to swim!) or are happier cuddling one of the many affectionate cats, LAW is the place where you can get your furry fix while contributing to a worthwhile cause.

BUTTERFLIES Who has not strolled across a meadow in a temperate climate watching the white, yellow and reddish brown butterflies as they fly in an uncontrolled zigzag flight from flower to flower, or observed a rare metallic-blue Purple Emperor gliding elegantly along a forest path? Unfortunately, butterflies have become rare in central Europe; perhaps by spraying of insecticides, perhaps by the loss of suitable habitats. Certainly, butterfly hunters are not the threat as many species of temperate latitudes are protected. After beetles, butterflies are the second largest order of insects. They inhabit nearly all climates on earth from tropical rain forests to dry deserts, and from the arctic tundra to high mountain meadows, with an altitude of 6000 meters. Their sizes vary from a few millimetres to a wing span of 27 cm and a wing area exceeding that of a pigeon. Whether large or small, some are well-known for their yearly migrations, during which they fly several hundred kilometres, cross the Alps, or even oceans, with the help of the wind.
The classification of butterflies is quite complicated and disputed even among specialists. A distinction is often made between the true butterflies and the moths, whereby the true butterflies count for only about 10% of all butterfly species. The life of the butterfly is quite short. While the males of some micro-moth species die already after a few hours, some of the large Saturnidae live approximately 5 days. The butterflies of this family do not have organs for food intake and digesting and live on the fat reserves, they put on during the larva stage. Most species, however, live for several weeks and some of those that hibernate even a few months. They nourish predominantly on nectar that they suck with a 2-5 cm long proboscis, which consists of a double pipe, from flowers with a long calyx, for which they secure the pollination in return. Lepidoptera, the scientific name of the order of butterflies, is derived from Greek and refers to the minute scales which cover the wings like the tiles of a roof. They are grown as extremely thin chitin lamellas, visible only under the microscope. Stored pigments, air inclusions, the microstructure of the scales and different adjustment of the individual scales refract the light, creating their characteristic colours. As many other insects, the butterflies pass through various stages during their life cycle and have a totally different appearances during each stage. Their so-called complete metamorphosis consists of egg, caterpillar, pupa (chrysalis), and adult butterfly. After mating, the females fix the usually hard-shelled eggs to leaves or branches of the food plant, either individually or in heaps. The number of eggs varies from several dozens to many thousands, depending on the species, and can even differ within one species, depending on the season. Most caterpillars appear after a few days. In temperate regions, some go through a period of suspended development before
hidden. Some caterpillars dig themselves into loose soil, crawl under a stone, or spin roomy cocoons with threads from a gland, located at the spinnerets behind the mandibles of the caterpillar. These cocoons are attached to tree branches, or positioned in hollows of the bark of the tree where the caterpillar developed. The best known cocoons are those of the domesticated silk moth, where the single continuous silk thread can be unravelled after boiling. It can reach a length of 1000 meter. The pupal stage takes a few days, weeks, or even years depending on the species. During this time, the change from the caterpillar to the butterfly takes place invisible from the outside. Some organs of the butterfly were already in place in the caterpillar, others develop only during pupation. When the pupa stadium ends, the skin bursts at the head and the butterfly lifts itself out, looking for a firm support for its legs. However, it takes about 2 hours before they are hardened and the butterfly can fly.

The skin of the caterpillars grows from chitin, with thin membranous folds between the segments, which permit a certain stretch of the body. This skin does not grow with the animal, and is renewed after 5 to 8 days. Most caterpillars shed their skin four times. When the larva has attained full growth, it moults for the last time and enters pupal stage. While the chrysalis of most true butterflies is anchored to a branch, a trunk, or the underside of a leaf by a silken pad spun by the caterpillar, the pupae of moths are carefully

Off The Grid: Lost in Translation
There is more than one language to a country, a region, and a people. The given tongue – the verbal one - is usually the one we tackle first, but as we progress, oftentimes we find that layers of other languages begin to unfold. They may emerge from subtle undertones and become powerful dictates of an entire experience. Cultures, expectations and realities collide into a unique formula that, depending on perspective, can be enriching or hardening.
An outsider living and training at a Muay Thai gym deep in the countryside of Thailand is one of those said multilingual stages. Most of our notions of this type of gym - the kind that’s well under the radar of the information highway and rarely visited by outsiders, if at all – might seem idealistic, authentic, perhaps even unadulterated. In hindsight, it’s all of those things. But within the pages of my three-month long chapter it was also a grassroots education in the challenges of communication. In the beginning, the welcome was warm, optimistic. My excitement of the phenomenal training ahead, and the slow culture of the people and the village, was met with equal

enthusiasm. There was great pride in the idea that of all the other big names in the game, the farang had sought their gym out. The charm of the people and the setting were on overload. I envisioned my addition as seamless. The integration however, was trickier than I thought. My Thai (and subsequently my South Thai) was limited, but I thought my Muay Thai would speak for me. It was a gym after all, not a language school. My abilities fell somewhere in a vast, gray area of the middle; not a beginner, but far from an expert. In accepting me, the first female to train and fight for Sor Kittichai Gym, it wasn’t difficult being the lone soldier in a boys club. I was allowed into the ring - the only ring - contrary to many ‘traditional’ gyms that still separate training areas and even partners based on sex. For many women both foreign and Thai, this can be a considerable hurdle. It was surprisingly a non-issue, so it seemed downhill from there. But after the first week, it was clear I didn’t understand where I fit in at all.
It was a gym after all, not a language school. My abilities fell somewhere in a vast, gray area of the middle; not a beginner, but far from an expert. Like typical Thai fighters, I was accepted on the basis that I didn’t pay to train, instead a percentage of my fight purse went to the gym. That meant I had to fight consistently
and join in their rites (the vegetarianism membership became crystal clear). People were intrigued by where I came from and why I was there, constantly asking questions, wanting to delve deeper into who I was outside of the ring. The resident gym infant also helped in a big way. An astoundingly cute baby boy of one of the trainers named Buht was always found in the ring and never short of doting by all. Family is central to Thai culture so when in doubt, win over the baby. I did that. Despite the struggles of being a loose thread in their gym’s fabric (or so it felt), I was being integrated on a familial basis. And there I was, lost somewhere in the translation of it all.
and I wanted to, of course. What I didn’t know was that this agreement would actually cause me to be treated just like all the other ‘employees,’ which was bittersweet. In Thailand, Muay Thai is a job rather than a hobby for most. Some fighters stand to earn more than others, so a hierarchy exists and I was not far from the bottom. Since the job is a daily occurrence with the outlook of being indefinite but long, I was churning out fights and training just like everyone else. I was falling in line, not being prepped for a finale of my vacation. But my training initially consisted of simply showing up and doing as others do. It was a lot of unaccompanied tutelage where learning stems from quantity. There were days on end where there was absolutely no feedback. That’s hard for an overly analytical brain in want of constructive criticism at regular intervals. In other gyms equipped to train visiting foreigners, the Western concept of expecting a certain experience because they are paying customers are better understood. This is not such a place. In this way, I didn’t understand their language. It’s a sharp learning curve that can dangerously breed misunderstanding from newcomers such as myself. It was difficult to surmise if they cared about me one way or the other. Turns out, they were waiting for a few fights to see what they were working with, and gauge where I needed to be. Not knowing this made for a long first two months. The lines of communication were slow.
Concurrently, small seeds pointing to the contrary continued to be planted with time. There was a strong undercurrent of inclusion that grew every day. I was a part of the camaraderie, the usual gym shenanigans and playfulness, with someone always stopping to make sure I understood the jokes, the teasing, even the gossip. My Southern Thai comprehension skyrocketed, because there were no escape routes to English. Outside of the ring, I was well looked after. I was fed a lot, and never in want of buying fruit. I was invited to learn about Taosim
Nevertheless, it was a trying first two months under the cloud of misinterpretation. Admittedly, I had thoughts of finishing my time and never coming back. But I had misspoken much too early. Once the underlying sound bites came to light, it became much easier to assimilate into their ebb and flow. Finally, I began to grow as a fighter in the dialect of Sor Kittichai, accepting the independence in the ring when it was still there, embracing the newfound lines of communication when my training was under a microscope. It was an entirely new experience by the last month. I didn’t foresee any anxiety of leaving, but after all the arduous victories that had been accomplished, I began to dread my departure. We had grown to understand, to really speak to each other, and I had to leave just as things were getting good.
I began to grow as a fighter in the dialect of Sor Kittichai, accepting the independence in the ring when it was still there, embracing the newfound lines of communication when my training was under a microscope. As I had become accustomed to every week, I was sent off with bags of mangosteens and a mini pineapple; fruit is a typical receiving and sending gift in Thai culture. A haven of fruit trees and a vegetable farm make up most of the compound that the gym resides on. After my last training session, I sat down to yet another vegetarian meal behind the temple hall with Pi Nen – the gym’s patriarch - and the elderly women who live attached to the Taoist temple hall in front of the gym. We all began to talk about plans for the future. “You are family now,” Pi Nen reiterated. “Just run everyday in Ao Nang and come back to train for a week so you can keep fighting every month.” Clearly, the voice in between the lines had a notion of my uninterrupted future with Sor Kittichai. We had all come a long way.

Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. A great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harbouring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese Pythons. The three villages, Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island amongst the mangroves. Resorts are located facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villages to remain authentic without any significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches.

While most of Thailand is of the Buddhist belief, Koh Phi Phi has its own eclectic mix of Thai-Chinese, Muslims and even traditional sea gypsies. The majority of the population is Muslim, but the entire community lives harmoniously. This melting pot of cultures and faith means there are abundant celebrations year round. Visitors can take part in traditional festivities such as the annual boat-launching ceremonies of the sea gypsies, or numerous longtail boat races. The island also heavily celebrates westernized holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day, making it a perfect location for holiday getaways for people from all walks of life.

A breathtaking view of Phi Phi Don and its isthmus rewards the steep walk and small admission fee of the Viewpoint. Of course, it is especially magically at sunrise or sunset, but don’t forget your torch. Surpass the daytime crowds and opt for a Maya Bay Overnight Sleep Aboard. See the infamous beach during sunset, swim with plankton blanketed under the stars (rumored to be one of the best spots to do so in the Andaman), and sleep in the wondrous bay blanketed by the cool night air. Some of the most spectacular Diving sites in Thailand are found locally in Phi Phi. A myriad of macro and micro marine life, caves and swim-through’s, and even a wreck site await beginners to advanced divers. There’s no shortage of renowned dive operators available to suit all levels and desired itineraries, including day trips and multi-day liveaboard trips. Forget the crowds on Railay and try your hand at rock climbing the limestone karsts of Phi Phi. Inch your way into tight-rope walking by venturing into a Slacklining, which can done on land or over water. Visit one of several climbing shops for more information.

The humidity, the sea, and the porous nature of the limestone rock have collided over the centuries, forming a vast system of caves. Try deep water soloing where you climb upwards of 10 meters then jump backwards into the pearly ocean below! Pure bliss! Fancy a beach? Well you’re on an island!!!! One of the best and most accessible beaches on Phi Phi Don is Long Beach, just a 10 minute long tail ride from Tonsai beach (100 THB) or a 45 minute stroll through the jungle and you’ll step down onto the picturesque white sand beaches that make this island world renowned. Just grab a cocktail and let the day float on by. Doing nothing never felt so good. Fancy a trip to Maya Bay? Remember way back in 2000 that movie with young Mr. DiCaprio, well you’re there! They even do a flaming jumprope that’s open to all that dare…. Fancy a tattoo? I’m sure you’ve seed a few shops around the island and I’m sure you’re thinking, hummm I would like to get one. Well my friend Koh Phi Phi is home to some of Thailand best tattoo artists around, just remember think before you ink.

Regardless of fitness level, we can all agree on one thing: the Viewpoint is a never ending Christmas of one of the most beautiful views in Thailand. Reaching the viewpoint is fairly easy. From the main village on Koh Phi Phi Don, visitors can follow signs from the road heading east towards Ao Lo Dalam. There are also signs for ‘Tsunami Evacuation Route,’ which is the same path. The 300-meter ascension includes steep steps along a narrow, twisting path. The path is paved and well marked, allowing even the tiniest of visitors a chance to climb to an incredibly rewarding view. There are actually three viewpoints (creatively named Viewpoints 1, 2
and 3) along the path, with Viewpoint 1 being the climax. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with an overlook of the sandy straight connecting the two large bodies of Koh Phi Phi Don. The birds-eye perspective is 360 degrees of jutting limestone karsts, which are just as majestic as when visitors arrive by boat under their towering presence. The view is vibrant midday, albeit hot, but it’s well worth a trek up at sunrise or sunset. Once at the top, visitors can continue on down one of four trails that lead to the remote, uninhabited east coast beaches of the island: Ao Tohko, Paknam (Relax Beach), Rantee and Lo Bakao. The first three take approximately thirty minutes to reach, and about one hour to reach Lo Bakao, where hikers can continue onwards along the road to Laem Thong.
Long Beach
Far enough away from the crowd yet close enough to the hustle of Tonsai Village, Long Beach lies facing southwest towards stunning views of Koh Phi Phi Leh. The tranquil stretch of beach boasts translucent, azure waters with some of the best direct beach to water snorkeling found on the island. You don’t have to venture far to see vibrant coral and marine life bustling about in their natural underwater habitat, and renting snorkeling equipment is quite easy and reasonable. Just 200 meters out from the beach is a small rock barely breaking above the surface – Shark Point – where black tip reef sharks can be viewed. Not to worry, these sharks are vegetarian! Since this is a popular stop amongst tour boats during the day, the sharks are much better spotted either mid morning or early evening. From November to April the water is glassy and calm, but May to October sees rougher seas, so swimming is a bit more difficult at low tide due to the rocks and coral. The latter season also tends to have a stronger current, so swim with caution. The majority of visitors come to Long Beach to stay, but it is also an
easy day trip. A quick five-minute longtail boat ride from the pier will deposit you on the finest and softest white sand on an island chock full of fine, soft white sand. If you prefer, you can take the more scenic route by foot, either by clamoring over the rocks between beaches, or hiking up the trail running through the Viewpoint. There are only a handful of resorts and bungalows on the beach, ranging in price. Each offers deck chairs for sun soaking, with the more upmarket resorts boasting a beachside pool. At present, there are no independent restaurants, but each of the resorts offer fresh seafood and Thai cuisine, as well as standard Western dishes. As the sun goes down and night blankets the sky, visitors can park themselves on one of beachside resort bars to accompany the sunset with a cocktail. Phi Phi Don in general has a laidback attitude, but Long Beach turns it up a notch by turning down the noise. When the sun dips, the beach invites a mellow vibe from visitors in search of tranquility; a few drinks and cards or backgammon with friends is typically the way travelers close the chapter on yet another spectacular day. And for that random wild hair, you can always head back to Tonsai.
