Research and Development Manager at Koppert Brazil
Innovation and continuous improvement are two pillars of the Research and Development (R&D) department at Koppert Brazil. This is where our company’s main innovations and strategic research for the field come from. R&D Manager and PhD in Pathology and Microbial Control of Insects, Thiago Rodrigues de Castro leads the area that has been essential in guaranteeing the high performance of our solutions in the production sector. Check out the interview for more details.
BioJournal - How has the department helped and led Koppert’s innovations in the Brazilian market?
Thiago Rodrigues de Castro: Our R&D department has been instrumental in introducing new biological products to the Brazilian market. Koppert Brazil has a history marked by innovation and pioneering spirit in the agricultural bio-input sector. We were responsible for the first registrations of biological products with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), pioneering the market in the country.
The department is essential to keeping Koppert Brazil at the forefront of innovation, as all our products are born from the needs and challenges of the
field. We work closely with farmers, universities and research centers to identify specific challenges and develop innovative solutions. In addition, we carry out rigorous tests to guarantee the efficacy and safety of our products.
BJ - How does the development of new solutions for agriculture begin?
TRC: The process begins with the identification of a specific need or problem in the field. This can arise from feedback from farmers, market trends or scientific advances. Our R&D team then carries out a review of the existing literature, followed by laboratory experiments and small-scale tests to validate the initial hypotheses. Communication between Koppert
Brazil’s departments is essential to ensure clarity on the path to be followed in the development of new solutions, highlighting the objectives we want to achieve and the costs involved in this development.
BJ - Before going to market, what stages does a product go through in R&D?
TRC: Before a product is launched, it goes through several stages, including: basic research and literature review, with the collection and analysis of relevant information to support the development of the product; preparation of prototypes and formulations; laboratory and greenhouse tests, with the evaluation of the performance and safety of the product in controlled environments; small-scale field trials; efficacy and safety evaluation, a step that analyzes the results of the tests to ensure that the product works as expected and is safe; adjustments and optimizations based on the results of the tests, from modifications to the product to improve its performance based on the data obtained; large-scale field trials; and the preparation of regulatory documentation and submission for approval, a step that includes the preparation and submission of documents necessary to obtain product approval, in collaboration with the Regulatory Affairs department.
BJ - What is the biggest
challenge for R&D in the control of pests and diseases in agriculture?
TRC: One of the biggest challenges in Research and Development is to work with the diversity of pests and pathogens that exist. Tropical agriculture faces a wide variety of pests and diseases due to its high biodiversity, which makes control more complex, as each pest or disease may require a different approach. The tropical climate, with high humidity and high temperatures, favors the proliferation of pests and diseases, increasing the frequency and severity of outbreaks.
Finding natural enemies that are effective and, at the same time, economically viable for large-scale production is another constant challenge. This includes the development of biopesticides and integrated pest management (IPM) practices. These challenges require a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, involving researchers, farmers, and public policies to develop effective and sustainable solutions, as well as seeking solutions that are effective against a wide range of pests and diseases, but are also safe for the environment and humans.
BJ - How does the R&D work in improving the effectiveness of our products and how is the quality control of our portfolio?
TRC: Continuous improvement is a central focus of our work. We conduct regular efficacy testing and adjust formulations as needed. Quality monitoring and control involves rigorous laboratory analysis on each batch of product, as well as field testing to ensure that the products maintain their effectiveness over time. We also collect feedback from farmers, through our Commercial and Market Development area, to identify areas for improvement.
A good example of this continuous improvement is the use of the flow cytometry technique. This technique analyzes cells or particles suspended in a liquid. A beam of light (usually laser) passes through these particles, and the reflected light is measured to identify physical and chemical characteristics of the cells. It allows you to count the exact number of cells present in a sample, ensuring the correct dosage, in addition to automatically counting live and dead cells, bringing the percentage of viable cells in the analysis. Additionally, it helps identify different types of cells, ensuring that only the desired ones are present. The technique can also detect contaminating cells that could impair the effectiveness of the products. Another benefit is the ability to process large quantities of samples quickly, increasing quality control efficiency. These benefits help to ensure that the products used in agriculture are safe and effective.
BJ - How many studies, surveys or technical surveys have been led by your department currently?
TRC: Currently, our department is leading between 30 and 40 research and development projects, focused on the launch line of new products. In addition to these projects, we also carry out laboratory studies, including more than 300 pesticide compatibility tests per year, greenhouse and field tests, and collaborations with research institutions.
These projects cover a variety of areas, from the development of new biological products to the optimization of existing products. Koppert Brazil’s R&D team also leads SPARCBio (São Paulo Advanced Research Center for Biological Control), with the aim of promoting high-level scientific research aimed at the development of sustainable agricultural technologies. The center has the participation of several researchers and specialists, both national and international, who work in lines of research such as the discovery of new biological control agents and the development of new technologies.
BJ - Why are we a HighPerformance company?
TRC: At Koppert, Research and Development are in our DNA and being a High-Performance company means constantly exceeding expectations in innovation, efficiency and results. In Koppert Brazil’s R&D area, this translates into developing cutting-edge biological solutions that meet the needs of farmers, improving agricultural productivity and sustainability. Our team is highly skilled and committed to excellence, utilizing the latest technologies and research methodologies. This High Performance in R&D is one of the pillars that sustains our leadership in the market, with innovation, technical knowledge, efficiency, collaboration, adaptation and focus on results.

With advanced technology, Octane is a powerful microbiological insecticide for corn leafhoppers
The Brazilian corn market has a powerful ally in the fight against corn leafhoppers. The microbiological insecticide Octane (Isaria fumosorosea 1296), an exclusive strain developed by Koppert, is one of the main solutions for controlling the pest, thanks to its innovative technology, which acts on different stages of development of the target insect, such as larvae, nymphs, pupae and adults.
The Corn Leafhopper causes direct damage to plants by sucking sap directly from the leaves, as well as being a vector for mollicutes, the organisms responsible for maize blight, also generating indirect damage.
The product is TOP 5 among the bestselling insecticides in Brazil in recent years.
“Octane represents a significant advance for corn growers, as it combines high efficiency in pest control with a reduced environmental impact. This is a clear example of how integrated pest management can guarantee sustainable
productivity. With Octane, producers have at their disposal an innovative and sustainable tool that, in addition to protecting their crops, contributes to the health of the soil and the agricultural ecosystem,” says Christian Cesar Menegatti, Product Manager at Koppert Brazil.
Innovation and sustainability in the agricultural sector
In addition to its proven efficiency, Octane reinforces Koppert’s commitment
to sustainability. With the advance of biological control practices in Brazil, around 27% of the cornfields affected by the Corn Leafhopper already use some form of biological management, according to Croplife Brazil, an organization that represents the chemical and biological sector. In this scenario, biological control has emerged as a promising solution.
“The exclusive Esalq 1296 strain stands out for its high tolerance to adverse conditions such as high temperatures, low humidity and solar radiation. As a result, the product provides superior epizootics, guaranteeing the highest residual on the market among biological products. Its high persistence in the environment not only prolongs the residual effect, but also favors the contamination of insects entering the crop, increasing its effectiveness in population control,” adds Marcelino Borges de Brito, Agronomic and Market Development Manager at Koppert Brazil.
Efficient control of Corn Leafhoppers with high efficacy
Check out Octane’s main differentials:
Contribution to environmental sustainability by reducing the use of chemical pesticides;
Greater security for natural enemies, helping with integrated pest management (IPM);
Increased productivity with reduced losses caused by the pest.
Corvair (Beauveria bassiana IBCB 66) is Koppert’s new microbiological solution for controlling the sugarcane weevil (Sphenophorus levis), offering a broad spectrum of action and plant protection.
With a unique mode of action, the insecticide directly hits the integument of the target insects after being applied in the field. After penetrating the body of the pests, the fungi colonize the interior of the insects and release toxins, eliminating the pests and potentially contaminating other healthy insects.
The Sugarcane Weevil is one of the most damaging insects in sugarcane cultivation, as its larvae feed on the roots and stalks of the plant and can cause major losses in crop yields. It is estimated that for every 1% of stump attacked by the pest, there is a drop in production of around 1.6 tons per hectare.
