eera, the great poetess saint was born a princess in Khudki in Rajasthan in early 16th Century. From the time of her birth itself, it was predicted by Raidasji (a great saint) that Meera was meant for greater things and that her family would be known in through the decades because of her achievements. When Meera is about 8-9 yrs old she wants a "gudda" whom she can marry. Sant Raidasji gives her Lord Krishna's idol, and Meera immediately falls in love with the Lord. Meera truly believes that the Lord is her husband. Soon after, her marriage is fixed with Bhoj Raj, the son of Rana Sangha of Chittor. But Meera remained, in mind heart and soul, married to the Lord and never accepted the prince as her husband. Post her marriage her life was constantly engulfed in turmoil, as very few could understand her devotion and faith towards Lord Krishna. It is a story relevant even in today's day and age- as Meera embodies a woman's true love and her ultimate sacrifice to remain loyal to that love even in the face of social stigma and opposition.

Screaming affair N

eha Dhupia couldn't be happier with her newfound Hollywood glory as Bollywood Hero, an American TV series in which the actress plays a B-town star, has received rave reviews in the US -- even The Incredible Hulk actor Ed Norton was impressed with her acting skills. It's another thing, however, that Dhupia took a while to recognize Norton. The actress reveals, "After the premiere of the show, when the lights came on, I saw Ed Norton sitting with me and I screamed! He said `hello' and complimented me, and I screamed again. He said, `I'm not that scary that you scream every time I ask you anything'. That was my Ed Norton moment." With her pictures up on billboards in Times Square, Dhupia has become quite a known face in Hollywood. She recounts, "I was taking a taxi in New York and saw that the top of it had my picture... I couldn't stop gaping and said [to the driver]: `that's me on the top'...he came out to look and said `yes, that's you'. I didn't have to pay a dollar for the taxi ride."

n a recent visit to Delhi, Amitabh Bachchan had dinner with friends, which included a surprise guest, his favourite actress Waheeda Rehman.

He wrote in his blog, "Now aged and well within her years, she to me describes what the conventional Indian woman ought to be in look and behaviour. Those early films 'Pyaasa' and 'Kaagaz ke Phool' and 'Chaudhavi ka Chand' and 'Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam' are unforgettable for the charm and grace and childlike softness of an ethereal looking Waheeda Ji, alluring and dynamic by the intensity of her simple and endearing looks and performance." The superstar waxes, "I was and still am her great admirer and fan. She signified to me the epitome of Indian grace and culture. She possessed in her the mischievous streak of that precocious village belle and the spirited movement of a Shiv Tandav. She looked vulnerable and lost, searching for protection in one moment, yet knowledged and mature in another.

“I was and still am her great admirer and fan. She signified to me the epitome of Indian grace and culture. She possessed in her the mischievous streak of that precocious village belle and the spirited movement of a Shiv Tandav You felt like protecting and guarding her from all the evil of the world and to gently wipe away any frayed eyebrows that may have accumulated on her face. Her performances were pure and clean, without effort and deliberate design. They were just a part of her - simple and soft." He talks of the first time he was cast with her, "And you cannot imagine the excitement when I came to be cast with her in Sunil Dutt's 'Reshma aur Shera'. The fun of our work in the heated confines of a brutal desert, the escapades with other unit members and crew and the absolute delight of being a part of the story that involved the great and divine, Waheeda Rehman. My moment of glory being the day when I was asked to carry her 'chappals' to her in the hot sands that were scorching her bare feet. I could have kept doing that for the rest of my life. Such was the passion of my devotion." November 2009 I 10 I KonnecTV

ollywood's very own chocolate boy has been the favourite of someone much older than the current generation of swooning girls. Raj Kapoor, the patriarch of the Kapoor family and the first original performer of Bollywood, doted on his first grandchild Ranbir. The young star fondly remembers his grandpa. He told a news daily recently, "Whenever my mom shouted at me I would call him up and he would fire her. I, being his first grandson, was special. Every weekend, the grandkids used to go to his home in Chembur. He kept a bag of toffees and gave us one every time we greeted him. I once asked him for a suit when he was visiting Russia. He got back two bags of suits in every colour possible. He never shopped for anyone else." Perhaps as an after-effect of those suits, Ranbir became an ardent fan of his movies. He said, "It was during my last days of school that I realised I wanted to be part of the film industry. The first RK film I saw was Shri 420. It influenced me deeply." Ranbir's father Rishi Kapoor wanted his son to get a formal education before he became an actor. "I completed my Standard 12 in Mumbai.

"I have grown up on Amitabh Bachchan's films and my father is a huge fan. But working with Big B in my very first film? The thought was intimidating, scary and to be honest I was little bit hesitant initially," the model-turned-actress said in an interview. However, Jacqueline's fear vanished after meeting Bachchan on the sets.

"It was not that I needed convincing because I always dreamt of becoming a Bollywood actress but I was scared. I kept asking my father 'Can I do it, it is such a huge investment' and my father was like 'Go for it, you will be a fool to let the opportunity pass by'," Jacqueline says describing her last moment jitters.

eepika Padukone has trashed rumours of her younger sister, Anisha, joining Bollywood. "She is not doing any Bollywood films. She is least interested in this industry. And even though she is very supportive of my career, I know for a fact that this is not her area of interest," said Deepika, adding that they do like watching movies together. Talking about beau Ranbir Kapoor's Wake Up Sid, Deepika says, "I saw the film and they all have done a fantastic job in it."

ow that Shatrughan Sinha has allowed Salman Khan to launch his daughter Sonakshi as a leading lady in Dabangg, the Bollywood hunk is taking his duty as the protective guardian very seriously. Initially, the Sinhas were opposed to the idea of a film career for their daughter. But Salman convinced them by promising to look after the girl. And so far he has more than lived up to his word. Apparently, Salman has not only advised Sonakshi to lose more weight, he has also told her not to do too many films at the same time. Shatru, who visited Salman on Eid with his family, is bowled over by Salman's concern. "I think that's sound advice.ĂŽ

Deepika is also all praise for Ranbir and Konkona's onscreen chemistry. "It is not a typical pairing and I know a lot of people had apprehensions about them being cast opposite each other. But I knew it would work well -- I got convinced when director Ayan Mukherji came and discussed the film with Ranbir.I think their chemistry worked really well," she said. Ask her if Ranbir is anything like his character in real life, and she interrupts, "Not at all, he is not a slacker boy at all. No one has ever needed to wake him up. He is always very focussed about what he wants to do."

fter working with Aamir Khan in Ghajini, Asin was told horror stories about Salman Khan when she signed London Dreams opposite him. Though she was confident that she would be able to handle situations by herself, she wasn't too sure what was really in store for her. However, all her misgivings were sorted out once she started shooting with him. "See, we all know about Aamir being so disciplined. So once I signed London Dreams with Salman, various kinds of stories started coming my way. People commented that 'Aah, you have worked with Aamir; now see what it is to be with Salman", remembers Asin. "I can slice and dice a dozen odd instances when it was proven time and again that Salman was nothing like he was being made out to be", shrugs Asin, "I have absolutely no clue how negative stories about him keep emerging out of nowhere. As I look at them today, I believe these are all someone's cooked up imaginations."

The one-film old in Bollywood, Asin, who'll be seen with him in London Dreams. One day while shooting in a mall, Devgn was shocked to learn that Asin had got into a major panga with Rannvijay Singh, who also plays a role in the musical. On probing further, Ajay heard that the two had a tu tu main main and Asin had slapped Rannvijay. Naturally, he was astounded because he believed her to be a rather chilled out gal. So in an attempt to play peacemaker, Ajay went to sort out the differences between his warring co-stars.

"Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan and I worked together, and worked out together at the gym," she says. "We also bonded over cricket and swimming after pack-up... and it was one big happy family atmosphere." Bipasha says she has great respect for Rohit Shetty's earlier comedies Golmaal and Golmaal Returns, and she feels that All The Best also has the right entertainment quotient for the Diwali festive season. Of her co-stars Ajay, Sanjay and Fardeen, she says, "All of them have tackled more comedy than I have in my career; so it was a cakewalk for them. However, while shooting with them, I realised that I can tickle a funny bone too."

Fatso is a film about five friends, love, relationships. I play one of the five friends." But why the name Fatso? "The film is going to the South Asian Film Festival in New York, and has been titled Fatso for it. When we release it in India, we may do so with a better title. That said, I'm the only fat guy in that group of five," he reveals. Ranvir has already worked with Rajat Kapoor (the director of Fatso) before. "Yes, we're friends. The pretty actress who always been portrayed as a girl next door, is for the first time sporting a gothic grunge look with a stud pierced below her lip, dreadlocks and tattoos all over her arms. Kat's look has been designed to complement Zayed's character in the film that of a daredevil biker. Says a source form the production team, "Kat was extremely excited about her new look as it's a huge contrast from her earlier roles. She gave a lot of inputs and worked closely with the designers on minute details." But one thing that gave nightmares to Kat is her hairdo! The dreadlocks that she sports causes a lot of damage to one's hair and Kat was very particular about that. "She'd immediately go for a hair wash once the shoot was over" says a source from the team. Whilst the security called for the organizers, Ajay patiently waited outside his car, smoking, obviously to kill time, as it took almost five minutes for all the things to get settled. Instead of losing his cool and throwing tantrums, Ajay just stood patiently waiting for the security to do their jobs. No tantrums. Thatís great.

ajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is a love story packed with lots of laughs. Jenny (Katrina) is shy, sweet natured, hard working girl who loves books. Prem kidnaps Jenny by mistake. Big mistake! Because now Jenny thinks he's the worst form on earth. Ouch! But he thinks she's beautiful. In his words, she's "chalti firti vanilla ice cream". She's yummy. Love can make you do the strangest things. And if Prem is ajab, his love is ghazab too. But there's a problem. Jenny wants "ek achcha ladka jo kaam par jaaye…time pe ghar aaye." But Prem has never worked in life. Ranbir's take Ranbir himself thinks it is the craziest love story. On his chemistry with Katrina in the film, he says, "For that you have to watch the film. But yes I guess Katrina is a brilliant actress, she had a great timing. Also her looks are very good and different from what she had done till date. We had a great time while shooting. I will say Raj Kumar Santoshi made our chemistry ignite in the film. Especially if you look at the expressions he got out of us in some of the scenes - it's amazing." Asked about any memorable moments related to the film, Ranbir said, "Lots, we had a great time while shooting for this film. Everyday was like a picnic where we all come and celebrate and have fun. So I will say the whole film is memorable to me." About what attracted him to the film, he says, is "Firstly the script which attracted me a lot because the character is quite similar to me. It's a very next door boy kind of role. And of course the banner, the director Raj Kumar Santoshi who is such a great film maker." Fun at shooting The delicate darling Katrina took everyone by surprise by displaying her tough side while shooting for an action sequence for the film. Katrina and Ranbir were required to climb a ladder which was at a height of 200 feet while Ranbir was to save Katrina from goons and then escape on a jet ski. A source says, "Everyone on sets was quite sceptical about

Katrina. However, Katrina amazed everyone as she comfortably climbed the ladder leaving Ranbir lagging behind." Ever since that day Ranbir has addressed Katrina as Rambo's sister Sambo. Nosey scenes Ranbir Kapoor badly hurt his nose while shooting for a wedding sequence. A unit member said, "The scene required Ranbir to hop and elope with Katrina on his bike. He had to ride the bike at full speed and he crashed through the wooden house in the process of escaping. He successfully gave the shot but during the process, it was his nose that banged on the wooden

sheet of the house." "When Ranbir was watching the shot on the monitor, Katrina noticed his bleeding nose. She gently applied ice and nursed him till the bleeding stopped completely. Ranbir was touched by Katrina's gesture," said the source. It fact Katrina also was hurt on the nose. The source said, "It was an action sequence. Ranbir was fighting goons and while doing the shot he ended up hurting his nose. And in the same fighting sequence, he accidentally landed up hitting Katrina on her nose too." But she never complained once. In fact she laughed it off saying, "Ranbir are you trying to save me from the goons or are you saving the goons from me." Everyone laughed on the set. Close friends During the shoot, the two came so close that they set the house on fire. They became very close friends and whenever they got time, they did huge masti. They took up fighting jokingly when an entertainment channel turned up to take their interview individually. After a hectic day, it was the wrapping up time and both started fighting as to who would go for the interview first. Kat flicked a coin to decide but the trick did not work. She lost the toss and Ranbir went first. Post the interview, they again had a big fight, only missing were the fireworks.

G

iven all the hype surrounding Do Knot Disturb, did you expect it to fare better?

You can't expect a film to be everyone's cup of tea. There were those who criticised it and those who patronised it. (Smiles) These days more people call me Dolly than Lara. The reviews weren't kind... You can't beat yourself up and be miserable. Anyway, I enjoy David Dhawan's brand of comedy and went into this film with my eyes open, clear about what I was going to be doing, so there are no issues with me. And with Blue coming up, I have to move on. With Blue, you're going to give all calendar bikini babes a run for their money. (Laughs) Believe me, I worked really hard to get into that bikini. Tony (director Anthony D'Souza) didn't want me to just play a character but also look the part. And since this girl had grown up on a beach, she had to look comfortable in beach wear. We've heard about how Akshay Kumar pushed you into getting over your hydrophobia for Blue. Any more fears you need to conquer? (Laughs) Even if I do, I'm not going to confess to any because then Akshay will be on my case again! No seriously, I'm grateful to him for pushing me into doing this one-of-a-kind movie. After I'd almost drowned, the fear had taken root. But after committing myself to Blue, I realised that I couldn't flip after reaching the Bahamas. So I started taking lessons from a national level coach and after just seven lessons, I was swimming. But diving was a different ball game. I started only in April and the lessons lasted four-five days. It was scary initially but today, I'm a certified diver and a whole new world has opened up to me. What's this world like? Unbelievable, unforgettable and so vast that you end up feeling small and insignificant. You want to see and touch everything! Did you find any real treasure? (Smiles) No, we didn't. But the Bahamas had their own folklore and we were told about shipwrecks and lost treasures. It added to the thrill. So, is Blue inspired by Hollywood movies The Deep or Jaws? It's the first underwater Indian film, a masala

Tony (director Anthony D'Souza) didn't want me to just play a character but also look the part. And since this girl had grown up on a beach, she had to look comfortable in beach wear action flick that revolves around four people and is over and done within two hours. You know what's the scariest thing about Blue? More than the sharks, it's the great expectations that we're supposed to live up to. Will Katrina Kaif and Kylie Minogue steal the thunder from you? Poor Kylie, she has just one song that incidentally is fantastic, and people are talking of a rivalry. As for Katrina, she was kind enough to step in and do an important guest appearance. If you see the promos, you will know I'm the girl who matters. In fact, I used to rag the boys (co-stars Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan) that people would come to see me, not them. They were sweet and allowed me to steal their thunder. What is your strategy now? Never had one. I've just been trying for a mix of masala and meaningful roles. It'd be easy doing glam roles all the time but I'm not going to play safe for box office success. What's the latest on the sequel to Partner? Now that David (Dhawan) is done with Do Knot Disturb, maybe he'll start on Tom And Jerry. I'm waiting to team up with Salman (Khan) again. People liked our pairing in Partner. ll The Best is undoubtedly the most entertaining film amongst the 2009 Diwali releases. Director Rohit Shetty (Golmaal and Golmal Returns) has yet again got it right when it comes to keeping his audience laughing without resorting below the belt humour and vulgar interludes. Witty one-liners and hilarious sequences involving Dutt and Johnny Lever have you laughing out loud. However, the first half isn't that gripping. But the second half covers up for it with confusions multiplying and each actor also contributing his comic best. The length however appears stretched as it runs around 2 hours 25 minutes. Some gags could have been shorter one feels. Pritam's music is perfect for the film. The story, adapted from a play called Right Bed, Wrong Husband, is pure farce. Ajay and Fardeen Khan, play Prem and Vir, two friends who live in Goa. Vir's super-rich, jet-setting step-brother Dharam, played by Sanjay Dutt, supports him by sending monthly pocket money but he is too busy to ever visit. To increase the monthly check, Vir lies and tells Dharam that he is married. One day, Dharam unexpectedly arrives in Goa and the fun begins with the friends piling on lies upon lies to save the situation. Bipasha and Mugdha don't have much to do but be a part of the chaos which they do ably. Johnny Lever finally after a long time gets a meaty funny part and he utilizes this opportunity to the maximum. Sanjay Mishra and Ashwini Kalsekar make the proceedings funnier. It's a total paisa vasool entertainer.

Prince Siddhartha's Kindness

P

rince Siddhartha (who later became the Buddha) was very kind to people, animals and other living things. One day he was walking in the woods with his cousin Devadatta, who had brought his bow and arrows with him. Suddenly, Devadatta saw a swan flying and shot at it. His arrow brought the swan down. Both the boys ran to get the bird. As Siddhartha could run faster than Devadatta, he reached the swan's injured body first and found, to his surprise, that it was still alive. He gently pulled out the arrow from the wing. He then got a little juice from cool leaves, put it on the wound to stop the bleeding and with his soft hand stroked the swan, which was very frightened. When Devadatta came to claim the swan, Prince Siddhartha refused to give it to him. Devadatta was very angry to see his cousin keeping the swan away from him. "Give me my bird! I shot it down," said Devadatta. "No, I am not going to give it to you," said the Prince. "If you had killed it, it would have been yours. But now, since it is only wounded but still alive, it belongs to me." Devadatta still did not agree. Then Siddhartha suggested, "Let us go to the court of the Sage and ask him." The Sage, hearing both boys' version of the story, said, "A life certainly must belong to he who tries to save it, a life cannot belong to one who is only trying to destroy it. The wounded swan by right belongs to Siddhartha."

Home is where good food is:

I

believe in one thing. It is food that can keep us fit and healthy. It is food that can make us unfit and unhealthy. So why not stick to the first type of food so that we can actually experience longevity? And this first type of food is clearly defined by me as home cooked. It could be hot rotis straight from the flame with a light drizzle of fragrant ghee, the long grains of dazzling white basmati grains that somehow make rajma or kadhi as precious as caviar or those spongy wadas that soak up the sambhar. Well, be it a pulao, or a khichdi, maybe a stew or dal rice, it could be some dry vegetable with roti, but traditional home recipes do wonders for the spirit. These recipes keep the heart ticking ensconced in warmth of tradition and cultural riches. Food eaten together keeps the family together and even if there are major time constraints I am sure something can be done to get hot food onto the table once a day ìthe more Indian it is the betterî the more traditional Indian it is the best!
