he stories of growing closeness between the sexy Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor, the new cool dude in Bollywood, are true. But not so true that Salman Khan need get hot under the collar and Deepika Padukone bothered - these two being the other halves of Kat and Ranbir respectively. Sources on the sets of Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani say the two stars bonded because they're the same age. Kat has worked predominantly with all of Bollywood's leading men who are in their mid40s, and the 27-year-old Ranbir came as, well, a bundle of fun. Kat, of course, is Ranbir's senior in the industry (she's a dozen films old, he's got just two releases) and she rags him on the sets by showing him five fingers. The irrepressible Kat just rubs it in that she's had five hits in a row... while he's had none. "With Ranbir, I can be myself. I guess it's the age and the film's a comedy, so the atmosphere on the sets is like that," reveals Kat. Poor Ranbir tells director Rajkumar Santoshi that they should take all decisions (even what to eat for lunch!) only after consulting Kat, as she's the reigning box office queen! "She's a treat," admits Ranbir. Meanwhile, news is that Sallu bhai is also a part of this gazab kahani. He's doing a cameo in the film!

shutosh Gowariker's historic epic Lagaan: Once Upon A Time in India (2001) may have missed the Oscar but its music has made it to Amazon.com's 100 Greatest World Music Albums of All Time. It's the only Bollywood film soundtrack to have made to the list that features revered artistes like Bob Marley, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Willie Bobo. Five Indian artistes who have made it to the list are Asha Bhosle, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Ustad Shujaat Hussain Khan and the fifth, of course being AR Rahman for Lagaan on number 44. Gowariker said, "That's great news." Gowariker said he always thought that the album had great potential. "But you know, I'm especially happy because this is the only album that represents Indian cinema on the list." He says he got a reason to believe that soundtrack has an international appeal at the Locarno International Film Festival in South Africa in 2001. "When I was at Locarno, I saw French, German, Swiss and Italians dancing and cheering the songs -- without knowing the Indian culture, the movie or even Hindi." Happy for Rahman, he said, "He's a blazer, he's completely unstoppable now." September 2009 I 9 I KonnecTV

his has to be the longest guest appearance by any star in a film. Shah Rukh Khan, who was always told that he has a guest appearance in Dulha Mil Gaya, must have never thought that his role in the forthcoming film will be, hold your breath, almost one hour long in a two-and-a-half hour film! SRK had signed the film due to his close friendship with producer Vivek Vaswani. But there've been constant reports about SRK being upset about his role getting extended so much that it was even said that the superstar was not ready to complete the film. Vaswani clarified, "We haven't added or subtracted any scenes with SRK. We have shot exactly what was narrated to him. He has about 17 scenes and three songs, and among the three, one is his entry sequence. We still have to shoot the music video with him with the entire cast. However, Dulha Mil Gaya is not a professional assignment for SRK. He's done it as a favour to a friend, hence he's getting billed in a guest appearance as that's the ethical thing to do. Had he charged me, the equation would've been that of a producer and actor."

his one's an exclusive bit from a first class air passenger, who was on the same flight as Shah Rukh from London to Mumbai (en route from his infamous sojourn in the US.) Katrina Kaif was also on the same flight and according to the source, once the plane was in mid-air, it was Katz who went across the aisle to sit with SRK and get into an animated chat. And Shah boy, gentleman that he is, got up and gave his seat to the lady. The only time Katz went back to her seat was when the plane was to land in Mumbai. Awesome, this dostana, eh? But wonder what loverboy Sallu has to say to this one?

s he Brad Pitt?" asked TV Daily host Jon Stewart on The Show, a prime time American show, making fun of Shah Rukh Khan's reaction to his recent detention at the US airport. The star's fans are not amused. Despite Shah Rukh himself making it clear that he wants to let the matter drop, this repeated mockery on US TV shows is making Indians react with anger on the blogosphere. On an episode of the above show, Stewart and Indian born comedian Aasif Mandvi took digs at the incident and the outrage it provoked among Indian fans and media. Stewart, who aired clippings of Indian news channels, asked why anyone expected the officials at Newark to recognise SRK. "Is he Bon Jovi? Has he appeared on the The Sopranos?" he asked, saying it was normal for the guards to have detained him. Mandvi added satirically, "This is Khan... you don't know who you are dealing with. He is the Shia LaBeouf of Mumbai, the dude from Twilight of Calcutta, Hugh Jackman of Jaipur and Bruce Willis of Delhi." Stewart further insinuated that the entire episode was a publicity gimmick for his upcoming movie. The episode has come under severe criticism from fans. Commenting online, a blogger, Anne, says, "You are wrong. I am an African from Africa and I can tell you this everybody in Africa knows SRK. You say nobody knows him? Yet the world media wrote more than 5000 articles in two days about a nobody!" Amit writes, "He has 1.5 billion fans, which means 1 in 4 on earth is his fan." Sneha says, "This got so many people talking about Jon Stewart, actually he's publicity hungry. This guy is being insulting for a cheap laugh, just leave SRK alone."

ivek Oberoi wishes he hadn't called that press conference in April 2003. Yes, that one where he said that Salman Khan had been harassing and threatening him over the phone for his relationship with Aishwarya Rai, who Salman was earlier dating. The poor guy is still paying a price for it. At Ramesh Taurani's silver anniversary, Sohail Khan, Salman's younger brother decided to take a potshot at Vivek. Sohail walked into the party and saw Vivek sipping a drink in a corner. He then went on further in the hall where most of the people were and he saw Vivek standing alone in a corner. Sohail suddenly called out, "Oye Vivek!" Vivek quickly turned to see who had called him. Sohail cheekily looked at a waiter, calling him Vivek and beckoning to him.

ou cannot keep an old patriot like Manoj Kumar down! Mr Bharat, in whose veins is suspected to pulsate tricolour blood, has put aside his jhagda with Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan over a dismal portrayal in Om Shanti Om and is ready with his own and new historical script.

Last time, Manoj had a script ready for Amitabh Bachchan. But he wasn't sure whether the Big B, who acted in his Roti Kapada Aur Makan in the 1970s, would sign the film, being already committed to various projects for the next year or so. Now, sources say Manoj's new script is on the life of India's third Prime Minister and one of the most legendary leaders of Free India, Lal Bahadur Shastri. The buzz is that Manoj is hoping for a casting coup. He has Aamir Khan in mind. Whether or not the film fructifies, we will know after the meticulous Mr Khan goes through the veteran producerdirector-actor's script. September 2009 I 11 I KonnecTV

This charity foundation is for handicapped people who find it difficult to face the world. "This is a charity foundation and it's something that I wanted to do since a very long time. I have the power; God has given me a little extra, thus I am trying to do what I can from my side," says Hrithik. Not many people know that Hrithik himself had a stammering problem, but at that point there were only a few people to help him. "This is where I am trying to involve my self personally, and help people to cope with the stress and pressure from the outside world," he adds. What message do you want to give through this foundation? "I want to convey to people that there is no harm in talking about your shortcomings. It doesn't make you look ugly, as one should accept the fact and try to overcome it. I did overcome my speech impediment and I am proud about the gift, which is given to me by God. I will see and try to help others too," he concludes.

adhur Bhandarkar definitely has a mind that is constantly buzzing with ideas. The hype of Fashion was yet to die down when he focused all his energy into his next project which is a revelation of what goes on behind the bars titled Jail and starring Neil Nitin Mukesh with Fashion debutant Mugdha Godse. Jail is being wrapped up currently and now it seems Madhur is gearing up for his next reality based film. This time on the theme of Bollywood award functions. The upcoming film is to be based on the many award functions that take place at the end of each year. Madhur being an industry insider will not have to research for this as it's basically his experiences that'll make up the storyline. Of course the recent awards season provided plenty to think about thanks to the scene-stealer, Ashutosh Gowarikar. The film is to be titled Awards and will be made in true Madhur Bhandarkar fashion! (no pun intended!) However, what's more interesting is neither the subject nor the title but the star cast. Although yet to be finalized the industry is circulating with rumours that Priyanka Chopra may be re-entering the world of Madhur Bhandarkar once again. The actress got the role of her life with Fashion which put her in the top position amongst all her contemporaries so it's highly plausible that if offered a leading role once again by the Bhandarkar she wouldn't say no.

ani Mukherjee is all set to be back with a bang. Her sizzling hot curves are making her fans go ga-ga over her up coming flick Dil Bole Hadippa. The actress has worked pretty hard for it, as she had to don a bikini.

A source says, "In the title track Rani dons a look like that of Kareena in the song Chaliya, where you can see her wearing hot pants and a bikini top." "She has been gyming and has been following a proper diet to fit herself in those hot pants. Though her look in the film is very different from what we see in the song. Shahid and Rani are complementing each other, when it comes to the moves, as they have danced pretty well and their jodi is looking super fabulous in the film too " adds the source.

royal with a seething ego and flamboyant temperament, Saif Ali Khan played a perfect rival to his lady Kareena's ex-beau Shahid. From calling fancy names to cussing, Saif rarely passed a chance to rebuke Shahid. But as the storm passed, and his film Love Aaj Kal raked in big moolah at the Box Office, Saif Ali Khan seems to have a change of heart, for the actor has extended an olive branch to his archenemy Shahid. Saif in a candid interview, confessed to his dark traits that made him sore towards Shahid. The dishy actor, who had initially lashed out at Shahid, is surprisingly all praise for Shahid now. And it's all owing to his newfound success coupled with strong support of his Lady Kareena. He said, "My film has already worked. I realize that in the past I might have made an irresponsible comment of having been offered a role in 'Kaminey'. But the fact is, I was not. Vishal (Bhardwaj) had just mentioned the film to me. I don`t want it to be a personal battle any longer. We are all not friends for obvious reasons but I do think Vishal is a fantastic director. I have only heard good things about Shahid, from others and also from Kareena. He is a strong boy. I have learnt early in life that one cannot benefit from someone else`s failure." Talking about the worst phrase of his life, the actor stated that it was his insecurity that made him devious of others. "When Kunal Kapoor or any other director I have worked with didn't repeat me, there was a sense of insecurity. In the 18 years of my career, I have gone through angst. But now it doesn't matter.

L

ong legged actress Shilpa Shetty has again hit the headlines for being kissed in public and this time not on lips but on her rosy cheeks. The Sakhigopal temple is a prominent tourist destination in Puri district. The priest while blessing her, planted a kiss on her cheeks. He was so happy with the actress' visit to the temple that he could not hide his thrill and cast a kiss on Shilpa. The kiss by the priest sidelined all the reports of the police case against the actress for shooting illegally inside the temple premises with all equipments and hurting the sentiments of the locals by stepping into the temple with shoes on. However, Shilpa Shetty later lashed out at the report saying nothing of that sort happened.

S

aif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are set to give a sneak peek into their real chemistry through a passionate lovemaking scene in director Rensil D'Silva's film Kurbaan. So steamy is the scene that now the director is worried that a certain section of the sexstarved audience might storm the theatres just to see Saif and Kareena in bed. "A section of the audience might decide to see the film only to see the real-life couple making love on screen. It would be tragic," Rensil is quoted as saying in a media report. Expectedly, both Saif and Bebo were comfortable while shooting the scene. They did not even need to rehearse it. On the day of the shoot, very few people, only the essential ones, were kept on the sets and the remaining were told to leave. Since the scene is very crucial to the plot, the director wanted it to look natural and passionate without being vulgar. Reports have it that Saif and Bebo have created a new Bollywood record for the longest onscreen kiss by any two co-stars.

hahid Kapoor's portrayal of the mor ally-incompatible twins - the ruffian with the endearing lisp and the simpleton who stammers in Kaminey has catapulted the chocolate hero into an A-lister and audiences can't stop raving. Shahid wowed critics and fans alike with his portrayal of the shy groom in Vivaah and as the intense business tycoon in Jab We Met. But nothing has worked for him quite like Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminey, the dark thriller about gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops. The Charlie-Guddu roles have shattered the conception that he was just the romantic. And critics believe the 28-year-old son of seasoned actor Pankaj Kapoor has made it to the big league. "Shahid is going to be the next big thing...he has arrived. From a good-looking boy and a romantic hero, he has graduated to a star," said film critic Omar Quereshi. Added another noted film critic, Anupama Chopra: "This is the role or roles - of a lifetime and Shahid Kapoor, best known for innocuous chocolate-boy romances, sinks his teeth into it. Kaminey does for him what Omkara did for Saif Ali Khan. A star has evolved into an actor." His role of Charlie has taken the student world by storm. Copying Charlie, who lisps and mispronounces `S' as `F' in the movie, Delhi University students are `lifping' away. Sitting in a group they replace `S' with `F'." So a rather harmless `saala' becomes `faala', books are bookf and sex is... fex! Even teachers aren't spared in this F-game. "Our pol science teacher Suchitra mam is now known as Fuchitra mam," says one student. One Shahid Kapur fan has totally expunged the `S' alphabet from his daily speak, replacing it with, youknow-what. "When he has to apologise, he says `I'm forry'."

uperstar Salman Khan stars as an angry young man in Wanted. Ayesha Takia stars opposite Sallubhai in the flick which is a remake of Telugu blockbuster Pokhiri. Prabhudeva is director of the movie which has been produced under the banner of Boney Kapoor Productions. The action-packed romantic movie has been delayed since 2008 and will feature performers like Om Puri, Mahesh Manjrekar, Asseem Merchant and Sayaji Shinde. Sajid Wajid has composed music. The movie contains action-packed scenes with Salman Khan playing the role of a daredevil police officer. The police officer infiltrates a mafia group and works as an aide to destroy the entire mafia empire. Ayesha Takia supports Salman in his mission. The story revolves around the operations of gangs and the arguments which takes place amongst themselves. Will the undercover cop be able to wipe out the gang and save Ayesha from the mafia?

alman has done the action in this film all by himself and he says in an interview, "I am quite satisfied, as I have gone through a lot of training for this film and have stretched myself a lot. Be it be dancing or action, I needed the training, and the outcome of it has been good, according to me." Salman said he took up the film because of the script and "the jazba of working hard in it. Now if the film does not work, then I will stop working hard. As I know I have worked hard for this movie and believe that this is one of the best." Asked why is his character named Radhe Mohan which is the same as it was in his previous film Tere Naam, he said, "In Tere Naam, Radhe was a college boy who was hit badly and he goes mad at the end, but here Radhe is a man and no body can even touch him, as it will be very easy for him to bury them underground." On how does the film compare with the Telugu version, Salman said, "In this film there is humor, and different kind of action keeping in mind our audiences. It's not the ditto copy of the Telugu version, but we have our own inputs too, which sets this film apart from the South movie." As for his experience in having sung a song in Wanted, Salman said, "It was like I was just dubbing some lines for the song, when suddenly the idea of singing the full song popped up in my mind. Sajid and Wajid took my voice to the studio, put some masala and presented it."

LOS ANGELES: Venezuela made history at the Miss Universe pageant by winning the crown for the second year running, even as Miss India exited the contest without even making it to the top 15. Eighteen-year-old Stefania Fernandez was crowned Miss Universe 2009 by the incumbent crown holder, her compatriot Dayana Mendoza, on August 23. She became the sixth Miss Universe from the South American country, known for its beauty obsessed culture. But 22-year-old Delhiite, Ekta Chowdhury, made an early exit and did not make the cut for the top 15. Venezuela has won five Miss Universe titles, five Miss World and four Miss International crowns, more than any other country. The first runner-up title is shared by Miss Australia Rachael Finch and Miss Puerto Rico Mayra Matos Perez, with the title of second runner-up going to Miss Kosovo Gona Dragusha, reported Los Angeles Times. The televised event included musical performances by Flo Rida, Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland. Hosts were Billy Bush, co-anchor of "Access Hollywood," and Claudia Jordan, former Miss Rhode Island USA who has appeared on several TV shows. Judges include actor Dean Cain and supermodel Valeria Mazza. Miss China, Wang Jingyao, was named Miss Congeniality and Miss Thailand, Chutima Durongdej, won Miss Photogenic.

irector Piyush Jha Sikandar looks at the con flict in Kashmir without taking sides. That's because the focus is on a kid who becomes a pawn in a dangerous game played by politicians and terrorists. Sikandar also tackles the theme of kids being used in wars waged in the name of religion. Sikandar has a refreshingly different story rarely told on the Hindi screen. e. But the screenplay doesn't do justice to the thought. The film holds attention in bits and spurts, not in totality. Also, the culmination to this story falls short of expectations. In a nutshell, Sikandar had the potential to strike a chord, but it leaves your hand midway. Sikandar [Parzaan Dastur] is a 14-year-old schoolboy in Kashmir. Ever since his parents were killed by militants 10 years back, he has lived with his aunt and uncle, in a small town in Kashmir. One day, on his way home from a school football match, Sikandar finds a gun lying on the path. Despite admonishments by his newly-made school friend, the 14-yearold Nasreen [Ayesha Kapoor], Sikandar picks up the gun and thus begins a journey into the darker side of his nature. The quiet yet strong Nasreen becomes Sikandar's conscience keeper. She tries to dissuade him from giving in to the lure of the gun.

aminey is an audacious, original rollercoaster ride. Written and directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, Kaminey is about Charlie and Guddu, twin brothers played by Shahid Kapoor, both of whom suffer from speech impediments and who can't stand the sight of each other. Charlie, who pronounces S as F, is a small time gangster. Guddu, who stammers, is a mousy NGO worker. Guddu's life plans, chalked out until 2014 on a chart stuck in his cupboard, are wrecked when he impregnates Sweety, his fiery girlfriend who until now has neglected to tell him that she is the sister of a powerful gangster-politician, Bhope, played by Amol Gupte. Meanwhile Charlie has come to possess a guitar containing cocaine worth 10 crore. The quintessential gambler thinks he's finally hit the big score. What follows is a frantic, convoluted journey through Mumbai's mean streets which are of course populated by many Kamineys: corrupt cops, nasty drug dealers, gun wielding henchmen. Eventually, the brothers' determinedly separate narratives collide and they are forced to come together. The film has eleven-odd characters that you need to keep track of. Snatches of dialogue are in Bengali and Marathi. The first half moves slowly. You might be bewildered and perhaps even bored. But the pacing picks up in the second half and Vishal ties up the threads in an exhilarating climax, which, incredibly enough, manages to combine stunning violence with humor.

ainital, the beautiful lake resort nestles amidst seven hills in a lush valley at an altitude of 1938 meters. In 1841, the British first discovered Nainital as a holiday resort. Today, the town has emerged as one of the most important hill resorts of India. Nainital is a modern hill resort of northern India (336 kms from Delhi) connected by bestaligned and maintained roads from the railhead of Kathgodam. Railway line was laid up to Kathgodam in 1882. The road passes through forests where occasionally wild animals can also be seen. "Naini" is derived from the temple of goddess Naini which was built on the bank of the lake but later got destroyed due to landslides in the year 1880. The place is mentioned in Skand Puran as 'Trishul Sarover'. Tri Rishi (three sages Atri, Pulastiya and Pulha) had come there for pilgrimage. While they were at Gagar range (now called China Peak), they felt thirsty and could not find any water. Thereafter, they thought of Man Sarover and dug a hole which at once got filled with water. The lake then formed was called Tri-Rishi Tal (The lake of three sages). Today it has an impressive lake surrounded by the hills from three sides with highest peak Cheena (2610 m) and the valley in between running from east to west. The lake is a little more than three kms in circumference. Nainital remains packed from April to November with tourists for sight seeing as well as for seeking escape from the heat of the plains. Naini Lake has facilities for boating and yachting. Facilities for horse riding, skating, golf and rock climbing are also available. Fishing is possible with the permission of local authorities. Talli Tal and Malli Tal are the two main trading centers at Nainital.

An Agricultural University is already functioning and some tea factories are also coming up. There are also some pleasant walks around the town. A short walk from here takes one to the awe inspiring Bundla chasm which falls over a 100mts to the Bundla stream. The stream is a thin streak running over stony ground far below the cliff. During the monsoon seasons, it swells and rages - madly over the entire width of the chasm taking stones and boulders along with it and makes loud roaring noise like thunder. believe in one thing. It is food that can keep us fit and healthy. It is food that can make us unfit and unhealthy. So why not stick to the first type of food so that we can actually experience longevity? And this first type of food is clearly defined by me as home cooked. It could be hot rotis straight from the flame with a light drizzle of fragrant ghee, the long grains of dazzling white basmati grains that somehow make rajma or kadhi as precious as caviar or those spongy wadas that soak up the sambhar. Well, be it a pulao, or a khichdi, maybe a stew or dal rice, it could be some dry vegetable with roti, but traditional home recipes do wonders for the spirit. These recipes keep the heart ticking ensconced in warmth of tradition and cultural riches. Food eaten together keeps the family together and even if there are major time constraints I am sure something can be done to get hot food onto the table once a day ìthe more Indian it is the betterî the more traditional Indian it is the best!

Sambhar Ingredients: Split pigeon pea (toor dal/arhar dal) 1/2 cup, Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon, Oil 4 tablespoons, Pumpkin, peeled ,1 inch cubes 6-8 pieces, Drumsticks , 2 1/2 inch pieces 10-12 pieces, Asafetida a pinch, Mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon, Whole dry red chilies 4, Curry leaves 10-12, Sambhar onions, peeled 10-12, Tamarind pulp 1 tablespoon, Sambhar masala 1 1/2 teaspoons, Salt to taste, Fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped 1/4 cup Method: Wash and pressure-cook dal in three cups of water with turmeric powder and one teaspoon oil. Mash the cooked dal lightly with a wooden spoon. Boil pumpkin and drumsticks in two cups of water with salt till tender. Heat remaining oil in a thickbottomed pan, add asafetida, mustard seeds, broken red chilies, curry leaves and sambhar onions and sautÈ. Add half a teaspoon of sambhar masala and sautÈ for a minute. Add mashed dal and stir to mix well. Add tamarind pulp to the boiling vegetables and mix. Add this mixture to the dal mixture, mix well and let it come to a boil. Add the remaining sambhar masala and mix again. Adjust salt. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with idli, dosa, medu vada or with steamed rice. Recipe Tip: You can use different vegetables like white radish, ladyfingers, pumpkin, brinjal, sambhar onions, etc., either individually or in any combination. In South India, each family has their own style of making sambhar.
