Rani has seen her mother slogging to give

them good education and a better life. Rani's uncle is eyeing her family's small piece of land but his plans are foiled by educated Rani. Once, Rajmata visits the village along with the Prince. omewhere in the shadows there lurks a killer, a masked 'clad-in-black' sadist who has brutally killed a young woman and even left a message written in her blood 'Kutiya'. Everybody's usual suspect is her husband, the 'Mast' lad Aftab. But there is the gorgeous lawyer, Lisa Ray who thinks otherwise. And when the twosome get a bit cozy, a 'dangerous passion' begins. This Vikram Bhatt film marks the debut of Lisa Ray and the second coming of Aftab Shivdasani. Although the core the film is loosely based on the Hollywood flick The Jagged Edge, Bhatt has convincingly spun a gripping yarn, punctuated it with unexpected twists and turns and concluded with blood curdling climax thereby leaving no loose ends to distract the viewers.

The Kapoor women have done their bit and made the family proud. But it would be fantastic to see Ranbir take charge of RK Films. Yesteryear actor Randhir Kapoor has been in the news for the past one year, thanks to his plans of reviving the halfa-century-old family banner, RK Films. "I'd like Ranbir to take the RK legacy forward. It'd be fantastic to see him take charge of the family banner and take it to the heights that Dadaji (Raj Kapoor) and Bade Dadaji (Prithviraj Kapoor) took it to. I'm sure he'll deliver. After all, he's a true blue Kapoor," says Kareena. If dad ever makes his film under the RK banner, I would definitely want to be part of it in any which way possible," she replies. Kareena also feels that had her grandfather Raj Kapoor been alive, he'd have been proud of her work. "He would've patted my back. And why just me? He would have been proud of Karisma and Ranbir, too. It's for the first time that an entire generation of a film family has been so successful."

"I would prefer a son like Abhishek. I have seen him with his father on the sets... he was so nice to his father that I was touched, " Vidya told reporters. When the director approached her for the role, she wasn't sure about playing the mother of a progeric child. "Initially, I wondered how to do the role as I didn't have that motherly instinct. But while working on the film I realized what erhood is, "said Vidya. She says playing Amitabh's mother difficult at all. Once again, one can relish his clean-shaven looks, as the flamboyant actor has finally razed-off his bushy moustache. well, says that she was skeptical about her pairing with Emraan Hashmi in the film. "I never thought we would be cast together in a film, or if we would have any chemistry. I was also terrified of his serial kisser image. Recalling her memories of the Mumbai floods, on which the film is based, Soha says, "I was stuck in an unknown location for 40 hours. I spent the night at a stranger's house, lost my slipper, and my phone stopped working. It was very scary. In fact, I became hydrophobic after that." Another thing that scared her as much as the Mumbai floods was working with her mother Sharmila Tagore in Life Goes On. "She knows my expressions and what I am going to do. Working with her was as scary as the Mumbai floods. After my first film, she had given me a long list of things I needed to work on. I am waiting for her response to Tum Mile."

s h u t o s h Gowarikerís film has been in news for over a month over the casting. The buzz had it that Aishwarya was approached to play the female lead, but the lady denied any such reports. Then, it was Asin who was zeroed in to star opposite Abhishek Bachchan but she easily opted out. Now we hear that Sonam too has turned down to be the female lead in Gowariker’s period movie ‘Khelen Hum Jee Jaan Se’ that now has Abhishek and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. Reportedly, Sonam was skeptical of pairing again with Abhishek as their last movie, Delhi-6, was a dud. Also, Gowariker’s last movie ‘What’s Your Rashee?’ also failed to create any impact at the box-office. So, the Kapoor girl acted smart to cite date problems and steer clear of any more flops.

Veggie troubles

S

hahid Kapoor is a celebrated vegetar ian. It has been the reason of his glory and woes. While in one hand he was awarded with the title of the sexiest veggie for it, it was also apparently one of the reasons of his differences with Kareena Kapoor. However, now the sexy veggie is feeling prejudiced because of his fancy for the greens. Whenever he goes abroad he has to get food specially cooked for him as the hotels rely more on people's meat eating habits. And all this is making Shahid very jittery to go to Bangkok. Shahid, who is off to shoot for Yash Raj Films' untitled film, directed by Parmeet Sethi, is worried that he won't get sufficient variety of vegetarian food in Bangkok. Shahid also had a tough time for the same reason in the US where he stayed for 40 days last month while shooting for the same film. His man had to especially instruct the chefs in the hotel what he likes and dislikes so that they could accordingly cook for him.

Shilpa ki Shaadi MUMBAI: At the stroke of the twilight hour on Sunday Nov 22, Shilpa Shetty wed long-time beau Raj Kundra. The godhuli lagna had specifically been chosen by her mother Sunanda and the family astrologer since it's considered to be the most auspicious time for a wedding this year. It was a traditional south Indian Bunt ceremony at her best friend Kiran Bawa's bungalow in Khandala. Shilpa wore a traditional red and gold south Indian brocade sari designed embellished all over with ruby and Swarovski pearls. It was designed by Tarun Tahiliani. Designer-duo Shantanu-Nikhil designed a maroon and gold sherwani for Raj. Shilpa wore a kamarbandh with rubies and Swarovski crystals, while Raj wore a neckpiece with precious stones. Shilpa had first met Raj in 2007 when she won the reality show Celebrity Big Brother in the UK. They are also business associates, co-owning the Indian Premier League team Rajasthan Royals and a food chain in UK.

The reception at Grand Hyatt hotel two days later was a filmy affair, laced with glitter, glamour and of course hi-fi stars. Shilpa, standing with husband Raj and her extended family on the dais, greeted everyone with a warm smile. The two then cut their 9-tier wedding cake as the guests raised a toast to them. With wine and gourmet dishes from across the world, everyone was seen having a gala time. Even though gifts were a big no-no, Amitabh and Aishwarya Bachchan walked in with a big one in hand. Then there was Rekha who came post 11 pm wearing an exquisite saree, laden with gold and sindoor. It was only after midnight that Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, Hrithik and Sussanne Roshan, Riteish Deshmukh, Juhi Chawla, Fardeen Khan with wife Natasha, Lalit Modi and Sanjay Kapoor walked in. Since they all came in at the same time, the photographers had quite a time getting them all to pose for pictures. That's when SRK took the lead and arranged all the stars in a row and asked them to pose along with him! n 1998, rock music had a shot in the arm with the emer-gence of Grunge. The voice of teenage angst found an audience across the globe and rock music seemed like it was on the threshold of becoming the leader in mainstream music. Magik was one such band that wished to ride this wave. Aditya Shroff, a bohemian wild boy from Delhi who left the comforts of his parents home to chase his dream of becoming a singer in a rock band. He is the lead singer of Magik. Joe Masceranous is an Idealist. He hails from a family of failed musicians and hence feels the pressure of not succumbing to the legacy. A man of few words, he lets his guitar do the talking. He is the lead guitarist of the band. Kedar Zaveri, prefers to be known as KD Killer Drummer. On stage it may look like he is slamming those drums with a vengeance but actually, he's only just breathing. He is the heart of Magik. Rob Nancy, the laid back quiet fence sitter of the band. Just to experience the moment of his creation was to be in the presence of something truly ethereal. This story about the four young friends who put together the greatest band this country had ever seen but never made it. Years later fate conspires to bring them together again and sets them on a journey back to where they left off. A soul searching pilgrimage into their past. Just like an old Indian saying, if one dies without fulfilling a cherished dream he will be re-born to have another shot at it. The four of them came from different walks of life but when they jammed together they were One. If Aditya was the mind then Joe was the will, KD the heart and Rob the soul. t was a tough role reversal for Abhishek Bachchan who plays father to Amitabh Bachchan in "Paa" but the young actor chooses to train the spotlight on Big B, saying that the veteran has delivered his best performance till date in the film. "'Paa' will be his best performance till date but at the same time with every character Paa plays, he improves and gives his best. I would say that he always comes out with his best till date with every new role," Abhishek said in an interview. In the movie, director R Balakrishnan, has presented the 67-year-old megastar as a child suffering from the rare disease of progeria, which makes him age fast. But Abhishek said that Paa, where Big B plays a 13year-old boy suffering from progeria, a rare genetic disorder, which accelerates ageing, is a simple, light hearted and happy film. "Paa is not a film about progeria. It is a happy film about a father and his son and the sweet moments that they share," Abhishek said. Abhishek said that he instantly agreed when Balki narrated him the story as it was a lifetime opportunity for him. "When Balki first told me, 'I want you to play father and son' my first reaction was 'What's new in that?', he then added 'I want you to play the father and Amitabh Bachchan the son' This was an opportunity of a lifetime," he said. The actor who has shared the screen with his legendary father in films like 'Bunty aur Bubli', 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna', 'Sarkar', said that he enjoyed the father-son bond on the sets of their latest film. "Balki's brief to me was very simple, I had to be best friends with my father's character 'Auro' throughout the film, and since Paa and I are best of friends in real life too I really enjoyed playing Paa's Paa!" said the actor. When asked whether it was tough playing the faDecember 2009 I 24 I KonnecTV

ther of his real father, Abhishek said that he enjoyed the unique experience thoroughly. "Actually, it has not been tough at all. I would say it was the exact opposite, it was a lot of fun," he said. The idea to cast Amitabh Bachchan as Abhishek's son in 'Paa' struck filmmaker R. Balakrishnan when he watched the father-son duo together and observed a high level of maturity in the latter's behaviour. 'My main aim was not to make a film on progeria. My main motive behind making 'Paa' was to reverse the roles of Amitabh and Abhishek. I decided to do something like this because once I was with both of them and I saw Abhishek behaving in a very matured manner. It was then that this idea struck me,' Balakrishnan, who is known as Balki, said. The director revealed that he got to know about progeria, the premature ageing disease, much later and used it to make his film look real instead of a fantasy fare. Balki, who had cast Amitabh in his directorial debut 'Cheeni Kum', says he was convinced that Amitabh was right for the role in 'Paa' right from the inception of the idea. 'I was convinced from the very beginning that Amitabh will be best suited for this role.

He has given brilliant performances before, but this is his most mind blowing performance,' he said. 'For the role, he had to be completely different from his real self. For an actor to give a performance away from his personality is a very difficult thing,' he added. Balki is also impressed with Abhishek and Vidya Balan, who play Amitabh's parents in the film. 'Abhishek is a very sensitive, understated and subtle actor. As an actor and as a son you need courage to play father to your father in a film. It's extremely difficult but he has done a great job,' he said. 'As far as Vidya is concerned, I believe that she is the finest actress we have today. She can play mature roles as well as exhibit childish qualities in her,' he said. Stephan Dupuis and the arduous make-up procedure used to take more than four hours. Amitabh Bachchan says, "I was apprehensive initially. No one's done something like this before. But full marks to Balki for convincing me. We sat down, worked on the script and I knew instantly that this was a challenge that I needed to take," he says when quizzed about his decision to do the film. But for the man, the most challenging part came in the form of makeup. "It would take four to five hours everyday for me to put on my make-up and another two hours to take it off. That was more challenging than anything else as it was a test of endurance and patience." If the make-up department sapped him off energy, it was his on-screen father who made up for a lot of things. And the choice of beta Abhishek playing his paa onscreen came as a shock to Bachchan himself initially. "That was another surprise that Balki threw at us. But then, Abhishek has great calibre as an actor and he is the right choice for the role. Look, both Abhi and I are mainstream actors. We wouldn't like to pass on a unique role like this that comes our way once in a while," confesses Bachchan. But considering the nature of the subject and the role-reversal, does he think the audience is mature enough to accept the film? "I don't know. That will have to be seen when the movie releases," says Big B. With Abhishek stating in many interviews that 'Pa was a good child', on a lighter note, Big B was asked to rate Abhi as an onscreen father. "Oh! He was a very considerate father. He didn't beat me up or scold me. In fact, he did take me around a lot," jokes Bachchan.

So, you've decided to stick to acting?

Hard work pays off, he's an unbelievably hardworking man.

Yes, I love the movie business. In fact, there's no business like show business. Do you purposely keep a low profile?

There have also been rumours of a rift between you and your father...

I purposely do nothing.

I don't bother and neither does he. My father is my hero and that's never going to change.

Finally then, what kind of a girl would it take to steal your heart?

What then prompted you to drop your surname?

Frankly, I have no clue. I guess, I am going to have to find that out.

I never did. I'm very proud of my last name. - Times of India Talking of names, your brother Arya, called you a Casanova. Are you one?

T

here has not been a more profound, a more thoughtprovoking, a more dramatic story on the subject of terrorism before Kurbaan. It tries to penetrate into the psyche of not just the terrorist, but also someone who has been a helpless spectator all this while. Love blossoms between a Delhi college professor, Avantika (Kareena) and her newly joined colleague, Ehsaan Khan (Saif). But as she receives a call to join back her University in New York, Ehsaan proposes marriage. While her father initially disapproves of the match because of Ehsaan being a Muslim, he finally gives his nod impressed by Ehsaan's approach.

The couple goes to New York and finds a house in an Indian neighbourhood. But soon Avantika realizes her own husband is a major part of the terrorist sleeper cell operating there and is the reason for aeroplane blast that kills 140 people. She also comes to know that the terror outfit's next plan is something as big as 9/11. How she unearths the plot with a journalist Riyaaz 's (Vivek) aid and what it all leads forms the rest of the plot. Writer Rensil D'Silva (Rang De Basanti) making his directorial debut delivers a taut thriller that keeps you engrossed throughout. Despite its long running time of over 2 hours and 40 minutes his gripping narrative has enough twists n turns and chilling moments. Cutting away from commercial cinema traps and unwanted cinematic liberties, he has made Kurbaan one of the best thrillers to be experienced on the big screen in recent times. Without taking any sides, the film manages to strike an impact leaving you shaken with the full of bloodshed climax. More compelling than the similarly themed New York, Kurbaan scores for its brisk pacing, and for the fact that it doesn't offer an over-simplistic view of the terrorism issue. The film allows enough room for all perspectives and avoids romanticizing the terrorist as a victim seeking revenge, even if characters like Bhaijaan (played by Om Puri) and Aapa (played by Kirron Kher) make the same point repeatedly. It's in a dramatic classroom scene in which Vivek Oberoi's character Riyaaz confronts white students and their predictable logic, that the film reveals its neutral stance.

ROMANCE stuck in

FLOODS

K

unal Deshmukhís Tum Mile is more of a romantic film with the natural disaster backdrop added for effect. The couple faces two storms. The storm within, when they come face to face after their breakup. The storm outside, when a natural calamity strikes Mumbai on 26th July, 2005 [unprecedented rainfall devastated Mumbai on this date]. Two people [Emraan Hashmi, Soha Ali Khan] meet after a hiatus of six years. What starts off as a seemingly innocuous encounter on the same flight back to Mumbai, ends up as a rollercoaster ride through some of the darkest hours of Mumbai, as they see the city get swamped with disaster and loss... and are forced to stick together in this time of crisis. The rest of the film is about the couple battling for their lives after being stuck in the rain and floods. In their struggle for survival, they learn more about each other and things which

they had not known in all those years of being together. Emraan is only getting better with each passing film and in here as well he is very impressive. Soha Ali Khan delivers her best performance till date going through a gamut of expressions with amazing ease. Amongst the rest cast the only one to leave a mark is debutant RJ Mantra. He is very good playing Emraanís buddy. KD has handled the love story very well. The tiffs between Emraan and Soha are so identifiable. The ‘Dil Ibaadat’ song in particular completely moves you. Pritam’s music is melodious to the core. The cinematography does justice to the beauty of South Africa [romantic portions] and also during the flood sequences. But the usage of stock footage, at places, doesn’t work. The computer graphics could’ve been better and more effective.

Crafts for Kids FUNNY PICTURE

Spiced up Long Jump “At school, in the first year, I could not even reach the sand. When I tried the long jump, this may have put a spring in my step.”

Spider Web

Stuffed Mummy Hand: Take a transparent latex glove, put a candy corn in the tip of each finger, then fill with popped popcorn. Tie with an orange ribbon and attach a spider ring to the ring finger. Mr. Pumpkin Head: Instead of carving all of your pumpkins this year, simply insert Mr. Potato Head parts to make funny jack-o-lanterns. Pipe Cleaner Spiders: Take 4 black pipe cleaners and twist in the center, giving you 8 legs. Bend each leg in at the knee, and out at the foot. Use tacky glue or a hot glue gun to attach googly eyes to the "body" in front. Edible Haunted House: Cover a pint-sized milk carton with graham crackers using frosting as the glue and place on a foil-covered paper plate. Attach creepy Halloween candy and black or orange frosting to the outside to decorate. Try cotton candy for spider webs! Spooky Balloons: Get colored balloons at the party store and use permanent markers to decorate pumpkin faces, monsters, or ghosts! Pumpkin Seed Jewelry: Roast pumpkin seeds, then using a needle and dental floss, sew strands of pumpkin seeds together for a fun edible necklace or bracelet. Jack-o-lantern Eggs: Dye hard boiled eggs in a mixture of red and yellow food coloring with vinegar added, to make them orange. Use markers to add features. Skeleton Bones: Using several inexpensive "ridgy" paper plates, draw and cut out bone shapes including a skull, rib cage, and hip bone. Use brads or staples to attach the bones to form a skeleton and hang. Spider Web: Soak some white yarn or string in a mixture of half glue and half water. Lay the gluesoaked string on waxed paper in a spider's web design and let dry. When dry, peel off of the waxed paper and hang. Put a plastic spider on the web for an extra effect!

MAKE A PINWHEEL

P

inwheels are an age old craft that your Grandma will remember. Put together these pretty wind decorations and stick them in your garden.

What you’ll need: • Colored card stock or construction paper • Thumbtack or stick pin • Pencil with new eraser • White craft glue • Scissors • Sequins • Pattern How to make it: 1. Print the pattern onto plain copy or printer paper. 2. Cut the square pattern out, cutting on the solid lines. 3. Lay pattern on top of colored paper and trace the square. Cut out the square from the colored paper. 4. Keep the pattern square on top of the colored square. Either hold it in place with your fingers or tape it down lightly on two of the sides. 5. Cut through the pattern and the colored paper along the dotted lines but do not cut in to the center circle. 6. Use a thumbtack or stick pin to poke out the holes in every other corner as indicated on the pattern. Set the pattern piece aside. 7. Take one corner (one with a hole) and fold it toward the center of the square. Fold the next corner that has a hole and fold it toward the center on top of the first holed corner. Repeat with the other two corners with holes until all four are folded into the center. Glue the folds to each other and to the center. Hold together until dry. 8. Push the thumbtack through the center of the pinwheel and into the eraser of the pencil. Make sure the pinwheel isnít touching the eraser or it wonít spin. 9. Glue some sequins to the flaps of the pinwheel and let dry. Tips: • You can use plain white paper and have children color with crayons or markers to decorate before cutting out the pinwheel pattern. • Decorate with lightweight items such as sequins and stickers or glitter glue. Items like buttons and craft jewels are too heavy. • If the pinwheel isnít turning properly, try using a longer stick pin rather than a thumbtack to allow more room between the pinwheel and the eraser.

Deepika Padukone

Badminton queen-turned-Bollywood star Deepika Padukone speaks about the secret of her radiance. What keeps you looking this good? My daily skincare regimen involves cleansing, toning and moisturising. Healthy skin needs mild cleansing, for which I use gentle soaps. I use products that are mild and do not strip my skin of essential proteins. I am not much of a make-up user and stick to basics like a moisturiser, lip balm and a neutral foundation. I don't go for regular facials, but do indulge in clean-up sessions once in a while. Also, I am very particular about taking off the make-up before I go to bed. As a ritual, I like to luxuriate in a relaxing body massage with lukewarm coconut or baby oil every week. I think working towards maintaining a healthy body should be a priority for everyone. It is also equally important to maintain a high emotional quotient and a positive attitude towards life.

regimen all go hand in hand to make possible a beautiful you today and tomorrow. I am a firm believer in skincare the natural way. I am careful about using skincare products that are the right mix of nature and science. One should never try to go overboard on any products, as I think the more you try to be experimental with your skin, the worse it gets. Just stick to the basics of skincare and witness the splendid results. There are a host of natural effective products available that are a better bet than harsh chemically enhanced ones. How important is a healthy diet for looking beautiful? A healthy diet is the first step towards a healthy and fit body. I take a balanced diet with carbs and proteins, and I'm very particular about dietary proportions. I have three main meals in a day, breakfast being the most important of them all. I try to keep my meals balanced and simple.

How do you take time out for yourself after a hectic work schedule? I take care of myself with homemade remedies and a balanced diet. Working towards maintaining a healthy body should be a priority for everyone. I try and work out as often as possible. Since, I travel regularly, it becomes difficult for me to have a daily workout routine, but whenever I hit the gym I do cardio training and some light weights.

What are your reasons for being associated with the brands that you represent? I associate myself with a brand that I can identify with. I have felt in tune with these brands and hence the association. Brands which signify style, good looks, youth, fun and have a universal appeal are the ones that I

Home is where good food is:

I

believe in one thing. It is food that can keep us fit and healthy. It is food that can make us unfit and unhealthy. So why not stick to the first type of food so that we can actually experience longevity? And this first type of food is clearly defined by me as home cooked. It could be hot rotis straight from the flame with a light drizzle of fragrant ghee, the long grains of dazzling white basmati grains that somehow make rajma or kadhi as precious as caviar or those spongy wadas that soak up the sambhar. Well, be it a pulao, or a khichdi, maybe a stew or dal rice, it could be some dry vegetable with roti, but traditional home recipes do wonders for the spirit. These recipes keep the heart ticking ensconced in warmth of tradition and cultural riches. Food eaten together keeps the family together and even if there are major time constraints I am sure something can be done to get hot food onto the table once a day ìthe more Indian it is the betterî the more traditional Indian it is the best!
