We have reorganised the design department at Kometos. We are happy to announce that we have successfully improved our production process from design to installation and maintenance. At the same time, our product development has been focusing on thawing rooms, an area where we are already the market leader in Europe.

We have worked hard to reduce turnaround times in manufacturing. Our aim is an efficiency improvement of one third in production. Our installation service is very quick. We can build a carwash facility on site in only three days.

We have paid special attention to energy saving. Our customers operate in diverse environments, and in arctic regions it is extremely expensive to produce electricity. By using different heat recovery systems, we have reduced energy consumption by half in products delivered to Northern Russia.

As a company engaged in continuous improvement, we have decided to set growth in the service market as one of our most important goals.

Our spare part, maintenance and training services have developed as expected. The overall growth rate this year was 30 %.

First Hilutec packaging machine to Turku Pekka Matikainen (pictured), the Managing Director of Kala-Apu Oy, is glad to be the first Finnish user of the German-made Hilutec packaging machine. In early summer 2010, Kala-Apu made a decision to purchase the machine, and the Hilutec FP2000 arrived in Turku already by the end of September. This machine represented by Kometos is built with high-quality components.

It is easy to use and wash, the moulds are quickly replaceable and the machine comes with software in Finnish. These characteristics convinced Mr Matikainen of the machine’s quality. A visit to the Hilutec factory in Lotte, Germany, sealed the decision to make the investment.

Grasselli – efficiency and safety in meat slicing In October this year, Kometos delivered the Grasselli NSL 600 meat slicer to Veljekset Rönkä Oy for the slicing of steaks. The meat products will mainly be available at retail stores.

Responsible for sales of equipment spare parts. Gained solid experience in financial management at Gjema before it was merged into Kometos. Places offers and orders and translates Swedish and English user manuals into Finnish.

“The slicer is extremely efficient and enables thin slices, such as 3 to 6-millimetres thin minute steaks. Occupational safety and ergonomics are essential when slicing meat. All these requirements are fully met by the new slicer,” confirms Juha Rönkä, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

New abattoir promotes

ETHICAL AND MODERN MEAT PRODUCTION Demand supply magazine

A new abattoir and more efficient communication help to match the demand and supply for Finnish horse meat. However, large amounts of horse meat are still imported into Finland each year.

About fifteen Finnish abattoirs slaughter horses. Their slaughtering capacity is many times the current slaughtering volume. Only about 1,000 horses per year

are slaughtered for food, while a total of 5,000 horses are put to sleep each year.

Finnish horse meat can be considered very ethical and clean food.

Vainio Teurastamo Oy, a new abattoir in Orimattila, Southern Finland, specialises in the purchasing, handling and selling of meat. Its services include slaughtering, custom slaughtering, cutting and packaging.

Based on a preliminary study, horse owners need concrete information and comprehensive guidance on slaughtering and abattoirs. Finnish consumers wanted advice on the use of horse meat.

Horse owners are now asked to consider slaughtering as an ethical and ecological option. The price of slaughtering is competitive compared with the cost of euthanasia performed by a veterinarian and the burial of the horse.

“The slaughtering is a painless and clean operation, performed with dignity. The meat is delivered clean to Finnish consumers.”

Demand for organic meat and beef cattle is high. Based on Finnish consumption figures, the most important meat production animals today are pigs, cattle and chickens.

The fore quarter with breast, shoulder, flank and neck is suitable for soups and stews that take a long time to cook.

The loin and leg are used for lamb leg roasts, chops and delicious fillet steaks.

The slaughtering of horses and the use of horse meat have stirred questions among horse owners and ordinary consumers.

Kometos Oy supplied the Vainio abattoir with the modular units. The solution includes various ecological innovations, such as heat recovery systems. In addition, the Vainio abattoir started using the Freund manual tools and ICEL knives represented by Kometos.

Goat meat has a game taste. It has many uses in cooking. The meat has half as much fat as beef cooked in a similar manner.

Cooked goat meat has about 50 per cent less saturated fats than skinned chicken meat.

Horse meat tastes good. It can be used in the same way as beef: roasts, fillets and ground meat.

At restaurants, horse meat supply and demand are increasing in Finland.

The meat sold as “wild boar” in Finland comes from registered, pure-bred animals and their progeny. Wild boar meat is dark red, with a strong aroma and game taste.

The Vainion Teurastamo abattoir supplies meat to wholesalers, restaurants, institutional kitchens and retailers. Even private customers can order different meat products directly from Vainio.

Leisure-time activities

for local youth An active member of the local community, Kometos Oy has been promoting the leisure-time activities of youth in the Kauhajoki area for many years. For example, the company sponsors the local motor racing club, Kauhajoen Moottorikerho. It is one of Finland’s most successful motor racing clubs; recently its speedway team took bronze in the Finnish Championships. Today the club focuses on speedway; the local Suupohja Speedway Park offers excellent opportunities for training. In the next few years, the club aims to improve the opportunities for training and competing in different motor sports by building the first Finnish dirt track for motorcycles and a cross track for snowmobilers and motocross riders.

It feels natural to sponsor motor sports, because they have many elements in common with the company’s operations. Motor sports and excellence in modular technology both require high technical competence, great speed and the skills to manage varying conditions.

Food strategy ensures

global competitive edge The main goal of the Food Strategy is to ensure the future competitiveness of the food sector. The Finnish National Food Strategy, stretching to 2030, was completed in June 2010. The programme covers the entire Finnish food chain: from the field to the table.

“Can Finland strengthen its profile by relying on the quality and cleanliness of food? Will gmo-free, responsibly produced food still be a trump card for us in the future?” asks Sirkka-Liisa Anttila, the Finnish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

The EU’s current agricultural policy will be valid until the end of 2013. Even after that, there will be a need for ways of managing the markets. The European Commission aims to improve transparency in the entire chain: between the producer and food industry and between the food industry and trade. The agricultural policy should guarantee the continuous availability of food, stable producer prices and reasonable consumer prices.

“It is difficult to imagine that these goals could be achieved without some kind of market regulation. For example, the predictability of supply and demand should be improved, and safety networks should be developed to prepare for crises,” says Ms Anttila.

In the global food technology market, Finns are very competitive and advanced. Clean products from our rich natural environment and the top technology developed as a result of long geographical distances and challenging environmental conditions will certainly provide Finland with a competitive edge in the future food sector.

Kometos Oy has been collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in internationalisation projects.

The strategy describes ways to improve the profitability and competitiveness of the Finnish food industry and studies future challenges, including climate change and the use of bioenergy. It will be essential to find ways to enhance the profile of our food chain, both in Finland and internationally. Moreover, it is important for all countries to guarantee the availability and quality of food and water, at least for their own populations.

Kometos and the Finnish Skating Association

in good shape Kometos Oy and the Finnish Skating Association are continuing their successful co-operation in supporting the Finnish national speed skating team. During the contract period, Kometos Oy is the Official Partner of the national team. The company logo is displayed on athletes’ skating gear and clothing.

The current members of the national team are Pasi Koskela, Pekka Koskela, Tuomas Nieminen, Mika Poutala, Markus Puolakka and Niko Räsänen.

“We have trained efficiently throughout the summer and autumn.

All the team members have been in good health, so we have been able to follow the training programmes,” explains Head Coach Jukka Ala-Louko. In addition to the A national team, Mr Ala-Louko is responsible for coaching the development team of promising young talents, together with the local coaches and the juniors’ Head Coach Pirjo Lehtinen.

Speed skating is a sport that combines technical skill, speed and endurance – even the shortest race lasts 36 seconds on average. Speed skaters specialise in the 500, 1,000 or 1,500 metre race. In sprint races, it is important to produce power fast to develop enough speed, while economy is the key element over longer distances.

The World Cup started in November. This season, Finnish sprinters have three entry quotas for 500 metres and two entry quotas for 1,000 metres. Good performance in the qualification competitions is required to ensure entry to the World Cup. “Pekka Koskela is focusing on physical training, coached by Teemu Rauhala. His situation is promising. Mika Poutala is coached by Janne Hänninen, who is also the coach of the Norwegian national team. Tuomas Nieminen is attending the same training camps as Mika Poutala. Our hopes for medals are high, and also quite realistic,” Mr Ala-Louko explains.

Finnish speed skating is doing very well, and Kometos Oy wants to promote the success of the sport.

There are opportunities for speed skating in nearly all parts of Finland. Most cities have speed skating rinks, from Helsinki in the south to Rovaniemi in the north. The best opportunities are offered by cities that have artificial ice rinks, such as Seinäjoki, Helsinki, Pori and Jyväskylä. Speed skating is popular in many countries where Kometos has customers, such as Germany and Holland.

Kometos Oy’s role in the long-term collaboration includes offering its own opinions on the keys to success. Being number one, delivering peak performance time after time and having a systematic approach, as well as continuous improvement, smoothness, power and stamina (or “sisu”, as we say in Finnish) are familiar elements also for the Kometos staff.

Speed and technology à la Kometos When you train together, you get more out of the moments of success. Kometos Oy’s team is preparing for its third skating marathon.

“Training together offers an excellent opportunity to try one’s limits, with the support of the other team members,” says Tero Haapamäki from Kometos Oy. “It is important to have new experiences and succeed together with colleagues. It creates great team spirit.”

Suupohja Marathon 21 August 2010 The Suupohja roller skating Marathon from Karijoki to Kristiinankaupunki took place in August. Seven brave Kometos employees took part in the admirable effort, three of them skating a full marathon and four doing a half marathon. Altogether, they roller-skated more than 200 kilometres!

However, the most important achievement was the satisfaction gained from testing one’s limits and the success experienced together in the project they had been working on all summer.

Next challenge coming up in February The next challenge is coming up in February 2011. The ambitious goal set for the second Kuopio Ice Marathon is to double the number of kilometres skated last year and to encourage new participants to join the team.

When preparing for this marathon, the skaters will rely on refined technique and thorough basic work, which is typical for Kometos people. The marathon project was launched at the staff’s workplace health promotion meeting.

“We have a team of 20 energetic skaters,” reveals Tero Haapamäki from Kometos Oy. It looks like the joy of doing something together is catching.

The participants are coached in skating by Pirjo Lehtinen, the Finnish Skating Association’s Olympic coach for young athletes. Tero Haapamäki is the support person at Kometos. The skaters will be honing their skating technique during three lessons at the Seinäjoki Ice Sports Centre, and Seinäjoki Speed Skaters are offering them the opportunity for independent training. Many new participants have signed up for the project, including Kometos employees, partners and customers.
