A Message From Gerry Hecht, TBJ Religious School Director
The school has been busy this Winter. Other than having a very rare Snow Day Sunday, the students have been kept occupied and learning every session. We have been blessed to have music with Cantor Sam every other week.
Every class starts with tefillah with Rabbi and bagels. Then we have classroom instruction. The younger kids have been learning aleph bet and the older kids have been doing Torah study with yours truly.
One session we had the kids put on parasha (portions) plays, taken from the Torah and acted out by the kids. It was great fun.
We had other school-wide lessons about Anne Frank, Tu B'shevat, and Martin Luther King. On alternate Sundays when we don't have Cantor Sam, the kids do an art project that involves Jewish themes: making tzedakah boxes, greeting cards for Israeli soldiers, and Christmas cards for the patrons at the Christmas food distribution. Doing good is often fun. The upcoming highlights include a Purim festival, an in-school seder, and the March 30 trip to the Anne Frank exhibit in New York City.
Have a wonderful Spring.

Dear Friends,
I’m eagerly anticipating Purim this coming year, which falls on the eve of March 13th. At CAI, we will be reading Megillat Esther, performing a brief Purim Spiel, and enjoying some delicious treats. Yet, this celebration holds even more significance it marks the start of a full year of special programming leading up to a monumental Purim in 2026!
For Purim 2026, we’re thrilled to announce that we have engaged Linda Coppleson, an esteemed Soferet (a scribe), to create a brand-new Megillat Esther scroll for us. This unique scroll will feature Hebrew vowels and cantillation marks, making it much more accessible and enjoyable to read. Over the coming year, we’ll offer classes in Hebrew reading and in chanting Esther trope—designed for everyone from beginners to advanced readers.
Our ambitious goal is to have as many people as possible read a verse from our new Megillah on Purim. We’ll invite not only our current community but also our neighbors throughout Orange and Dutchess Counties to join in this meaningful celebration.
In addition to the classes, Linda Coppleson will join us on Erev Purim to share insights about the creative process behind the new scroll. We have planned engaging programs for families, young children, and teens—ensuring that everyone can be part of this grand celebration. There will even be an opportunity to sponsor a pasuk (a passage) in our Megillah, allowing your contribution to become a lasting part of our community’s future.
Stay tuned in the coming months for announcements on classes and events as we build toward an unforgettable Purim 2026. I cannot wait to see our community come together, celebrating our traditions and sharing in the joy of reading Megillat Esther.
As the Talmud (Taanit 29a) reminds us, “as soon as Adar has entered, we increase in happiness.” This teaching speaks to the way Adar ushers in the joy of Purim and soon, the miracles of Passover. In a world where troubling news often surrounds us, I pray that our joy grows in Adar and continues all the way through the year.
Wishing you a season filled with increasing joy!

A Message From Rabbi Douglas Kohn
Dear Friends,
“…the greatest evil perpetrated is the evil committed by nobodies, that is, by human beings who refuse to be persons.” - Hannah Arendt, 1965
Those words of Hannah Arendt, arguably the foremost scholar of the intersection of authoritarianism, Nazism and totalitarianism of the last century, though stated in 1965, never have been more prescient.
Presently, we are living in a new world, but one presaged by earlier iterations. We are living in a dichotomous moment amid resurgent quiescence, and quiescent resurgence. We are living in a period which demands Arendt’s personhood more than ever.
And, the words of Arendt were presaged, literally, 2000 years earlier by arguably Judaism’s greatest rabbinic sage, Hillel, who contemplated of the nature of civilization and humanity in the first century. Hillel offered this dictum:
“In a world in which there is no humanity, strive to be human.”
Whereas Hillel witnessed the Roman version of power and control, and Arendt that of Hitler and Stalin, today we dwell during a new version of the juncture of power and powerlessness, quiescence and resurgence.
From Gaza to Ukraine, from Moscow, Russia to Moscow, Ohio, and from Washington, D.C. to Washington state, personhood and humanity in 2025 are begging both energy and identity. Are we nobodies, or are we those who stand and strive to be human?
Surely, there is much about which to be discontented, today. From the price of eggs to the suppression of a free press, from violence in the skies over Kiev to starvation in Sudan to complacency in Congress, the work of humanity may certainly be failing God’s original evaluation that we were “Very Good,” as declared in Genesis. We certainly have earned many demerits.
Yet, we can take diverse messages from both Arendt and Hillel. Either we can indict the human experience, condemn ourselves and our work, and join the resurgent quiescence. Or, we can derive from our scholars that there are both opportunities and tasks before us, and all that is needed is for us to vigorously reclaim our status of humanity – to be persons and strive to be human – to make differences in our world.
We can be despondent, or we can be respondent.
I choose the latter.
I choose to stand and strive, and I choose to reclaim personhood.
I trust you do, too!
Rabbi Douglas Kohn
