The Golem of Brooklyn by Adam Mansbach
In Jewish folklore, a golem is a humanoid created out of clay and animated through secret prayers. Its sole purpose is to defend the Jewish people against the immediate threat of violence. It is always a rabbi who makes a golem, and always in a time of crisis.
But Len Bronstein is no rabbi he’s a Brooklyn art teacher who steals a large quantity of clay from his school, gets extremely stoned, and manages to bring his creation to life despite knowing little about Judaism and even less about golems. Unable to communicate with his nine-foot-six, four hundred-pound, Yiddish-speaking guest, Len enlists an ex-Hasid named Miri Apfelbaum to translate.

A Message From Gerry Hecht, TBJ Religious School Director
We've had a fun-filled and educational two months at TBJ/RS. First of all, the addition of Student Cantor Sam has been a wonderful faculty benefit. Twice a month she has brought music and liturgy to our school. She helped us perform Parasha Plays in the library, with the kids being the performers.
We had some "out of office" experiences recently. We went to Florida, New York for the Purim Festival. Our school was well-represented and Rabbi Doug performed the megilla and the Purim shpiel with other Orange County clergy. It was a lot of fun.
Then, we had our annual field trip to New York City when 24 members of our temple went to the Anne Frank exhibit at the Center for Jewish History on 16th Street. It was great. It had recreations of the secret annex, but it was truly an exhibit to teach the world about Anne, her family and the plight of European Jews during the war years. The self-guided tour was enjoyed by everyone.
Several people then enjoyed NYC. I went to Chelsea Market.
Last weekend, we had a Chocolate Seder at the Beacon Hebrew Alliance, joining their school and faculty across the river for a fun and tasty seder. TBJ had a regular contingent of students and teachers, along with Student Cantor Sam and Rabbi Doug.
As we head towards the end of the school year, plans are being made for end-of-year events and fun. Stay tuned.

Dear Friends,
When Moses ascended Mount Sinai, God showed him all of Torah. Not just the five books we know as The Torah, but everything: the oral law, the Talmud, every comment from Rashi and Ramban, the Mishneh Torah and the Shulchan Aruch, the writings of Heschel, Kaplan, Herzl, Einstein even the teachings of sages not yet born. All of Torah: the knowledge of everything that ever was, is, and will be.
Moses reared back, overwhelmed, and said the Israelites could never receive all of this. So God simplified Torah. Moses said it was still too much. God simplified it again — and again until finally Moses told God to stop with the version we have today: the Five Books of Moses, a Torah that even the wisest scholar could spend a lifetime studying and still not reach its end.
What does it mean, then, to say that we received the Torah on Shavuot? Did we receive only the Five Books of Moses? Or did we receive — and continue to receive — an ongoing revelation that encompasses all our learning, all our experiences, all our understanding of the world, seen through the lens of Jewish tradition?
This Shavuot, Congregation Agudas Israel and Newburgh JCC will host a Community Tikkun Leil Shavuot on Sunday evening, June 1st, starting at 6:00 PM. We will hear from doctors, lawyers, artists, teachers, scientists, authors, therapists, chefs, musicians — and yes, maybe even a rabbi or a cantor all sharing their Torah: their unique wisdom, shaped by their Jewish lives, their Jewish families, their workplace, interests and experiences. How do we balance a lifetime of spirituality and religion in our professional lives? How does this impact our actions and moral decision-making?
And because all this learning will make us hungry, we will host a cheesecake contest! Bakers from across our community will be baking cheesecake in our kitchen to share with us on Shavuot.
I hope you’ll join us for an evening of learning, dialogue, music, prayer, and, of course, cheesecake. Because every voice adds a verse to the Torah we are still writing together.

THURSDAY
A Message From Rabbi Douglas Kohn
Dear Friends,
Jewish life and the Hebrew calendar teach us neat, little, unexpected lessons.
In 1948, Israel became a state at midnight, May 14/15. As the clock struck midnight, the British, who had controlled the Mandate since the League of Nations confirmed its role in 1922, lowered the Union Jack, and the brand-new Israelis raised their blue and white flag with the Star of David in the middle. Then, they danced the hora and went to war to defend their nascent country from attacking Arab armies.
It was the 5th day of Iyar, 5708, and insofar as Hebrew dates begin not at midnight, but at sundown, such would forever be the date of Israel’s Independence. (The secular calendar follows May 14/15, 1948). Ever since, and as decreed by the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) Israelis and others celebrate the miracle of Israel’s rebirth with song and dance on Yom Ha’Atzma’ut, Israeli Independence Day, the 5th of Iyar, commonly launching fireworks in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, with bands playing on street corners, and little plastic musical hammers, called p’tashim, whacking on people’s heads.
That is, except for this year.
This year, Israel’s Independence Day will not be marked not on the 5th of Iyar. Rather, it will be celebrated on the 3rd of Iyar. Why?
No - not because of dismay over the continuing plight of the captive hostages in Gaza, though that surely will dampen the celebrations.
No - nor is it due to distrust and disconnect over the authoritarian rule of the Netanyahu government, which also will dampen the celebrations.
Rather, it is due to the quirks of Jewish tradition. When the 5th of Iyar falls over Shabbat, Israeli law deems that Yom Ha’Atzma’ut, Israeli Independence day, is moved to the preceding Thursday, which this year is the 3rd of Iyar, May 1. This is so that celebrations do not violate Shabbat, and so that all may participate equally – those who observe Shabbat and those who do not observe Shabbat.
Though this date adjustment appears merely to be a practical consideration, it rests in much deeper Jewish values and law. Reflecting on disputes among certain early rabbinic sages, the Talmud taught, “Eilu v’eilu divrei Elohim Chayim” –“Both these and these are expressions of the Living God.” In other words, opposites, or contending truths, each may contain elements of veracity and correctness. The world is not a zero-sum game, even as some present politicians assert otherwise. There is not always a winner and a concomitant loser. Two disparate truths can coexist, side-by-side.
Thus, Israel’s founders, many of whom were secular Zionist Jews, realized that the secular date of Israel’s founding must share a calendar with Israel’s Jewish calendar. Hence, when the 5th of Iyar falls on Shabbat, the date is adjusted so all can participate.
Finding common ground is a sacred Jewish ethic! Even, for launching fireworks!
