KTJ has launched a comprehensive recycling program in both the Primary and Secondary Schools, as well as outside the boarding and day houses. Additionally, KTJ’s Environmental Sustainability Club has spearheaded an initiative centered around the five Rs: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle, with recycling being the last resort. A significant effort has been made to reduce single-use plastics, including a total ban on disposable straws and coffee cups at Cafe Diem.
Community engagement
This goal has seen the most significant progress. We have enhanced our work with local charities in and around Mantin and collaborated with refugee organisations. Many students and staff have volunteered their time for fundraising, resource donations (for example, backpack drives and shoebox appeals), and project support. The School continues to develop its relationship and engagement with local government schools.
Our role as a local employer
Post-pandemic, hiring more local employees became challenging, so we supplemented our headcount with contract workers. Despite this, we ensure all employees feel part of the KTJ community. We emphasise “one team” through regular whole-staff days, and the Kawan-Kawan Committee organises activities to enhance staff bonding. We closed the school for a week during the December break to provide staff with a rest period and recently ceased Saturday morning academic lessons to support a better work-life balance.

Energy production
In 2020, we began measuring our carbon footprint with the support of the Planet Mark. However, due to difficulties in obtaining accurate measurements, we paused the project. Achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 is proving to be more challenging than anticipated. Nonetheless, we have made progress by installing solar panels and using electric buggies. Moving forward, we aim to raise sustainability awareness among our students and develop an ethical sourcing strategy to further reduce our school’s carbon footprint.
