Welcome
from the Deputy Head of Secondary (overseeing Boarding)

Here at Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar, our day and boarding students constitute the very heartbeat of our school and indeed, the atmosphere that pervades is richer for the presence of our School community. While offering a traditional British boarding school model in a Malaysian setting, we are forward thinking in our approach, and while we could never replace the love and care of a student’s home, our day and boarding houses offer experiences, memories and friendships that are enhanced by the boarding environment. Dedicated house staff are focused on creating a ‘second home’ for our students, making sure our boarding houses are a place of comfort, support and belonging for all who live there.
Our holistic approach to education is rooted in the belief that we should be developing students beyond the bounds of the classroom, allowing them to grow and to prepare for all the
We believe happy students will be successful ones, and therefore we focus on enriching all aspects of our students’ lives, aiding them in their development into confident and well-rounded young adults and global citizens.
Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar is an amazing school, full of happy students who benefit from our diverse pool of teaching experience and the abundance of facilities that sit within our 80-acre site. We are extremely proud of the international boarding provision we provide and are confident that our students are ready to ‘Make it’ in the ever changing global world that awaits them when they leave.

Welcome & Introduction
from the Houseparent of Naquiah Day House

Welcome to Naquiah Day House. I studied at Ampleforth College, a boarding school in northern England, before going to Durham University to study History and Canterbury Christ Church University, where I studied Secondary Teaching. I have taught in a variety of schools in England and in Dubai. I moved to Malaysia in 2018, and started as a History Teacher and Naquiah Boys House tutor before being promoted to Assistant Head of Secondary. I transferred to Imran House, and now I am the Houseparent of Naquiah Day House. Outside KTJ, I am an accreditor for the Council of International Schools, for whom I get to visit and learn from some fascinating schools around the region, including Kota Kinabalu, Saigon, Bangkok, and Delhi. I also enjoy reading, history, and cooking (or more accurately, eating) delicious food from around the world.

Having been a boarding tutor in Alia and a Chemistry teacher for almost 10 years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with students, helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence while nurturing their personal and academic development. This experience instilled in me a deep sense of purpose and a genuine passion for fostering an environment where young individuals could flourish. Apart from my passion for teaching, I love doing yoga and meditation, cooking vegetarian meals and listening to music in my spare time. Motivated by my experience and desire to make a lasting impact on students’ lives, I have decided to take the next step in my journey by joining the Naquiah Day House as an Assistant Houseparent. I’m very much looking forward to building a meaningful connection with each and everyone of you.

Naquiah Day Assistant Houseparent
After finishing school and working in the electricity industry for a number of years I moved to KTJ. I currently work in the Design Technology and Art departments where I assist students to produce their best work and develop the skills needed to finish their products to the highest standard possible, both in class and during after school activities. As a sportsman, I love to play squash, badminton and football, although unfortunately not quite like the professionals. I also love to travel. I became part of the Naquiah Day House family in January 2020 when I was appointed as an Assistant tutor and I have enjoyed seeing the students engage with each other regardless of their year group or opinions, all under the NQHD roof!

Born in York, England with Caribbean heritage I have always taken great pride in being responsible for the progression, growth and management of Physical Education and Sport within a period, spanning over 20 yrs. I successfully joined KTJ in August 2017 where prior leadership and pastoral roles have been Director of Sport, Head of Physical Education, Head Coach, and Tutor status in the USA, UK, Brazil and Kenya (boarding). I have history of teaching and competing at international, development, and age group level. This exemplifies my life-long passion in sport, and education facilitating student progress, and life-long learning. I feel incredibly proud, as do my family, to have the opportunity to live and work in such a unique and thriving community, and hope that my children after KTJ Primary reap all the opportunities provided by Naquiah Day and Boarding life here at KTJ.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my role in Naquiah Day House. I especially enjoy chatting to the students about their day, beating the boys in a game of pool, or playing board games with the students. It is a real pleasure to see them thriving in a non-academic setting. The House Nights have been amazing so far! Watching Ghostbusters with the kids has got to be one of the highlights of my time at KTJ.
To date, I have worked in Hong Kong, Doha, Shanghai, the UK and Malaysia. I have been living and working in sunny Malaysia for five years now and have to say that KTJ is one of the best schools I have ever worked for. Not only is there a strong community feeling amongst the students, but this wonderful community spirit extends to the staff body as well.
I hold a BA (Hons) Theatre Studies and Drama from Royal Holloway, University of London and a PGCE English and Drama from University of Warwick and my interests in literature are Gothic Fiction, Dystopian Literature and Magical Realism. Outside of school, I enjoy swimming, walking, amateur theatre, singing, travelling and being a self-professed foodie. I have a passion for writing and live with my very spoilt pet rabbit, Oreo.
