Sports News

Opportunities and celebrations have been plentiful for the students in the last fortnight and have also been the themes of our assemblies Our Malaysia Day celebration was phenomenal with a focus on the history of Malaysia, Malaysian role models and of course, lots of flag waving and singing! Thank you to all the students involved in making this such a success.

Our music department is thriving, with both the school choir and orchestra increasing their size to over 35 students apiece. On Saturday 2 September we hosted the Malay professional countertenor Wee Kiat Chia. He told students about his career which took him from Johor to giving concerts worldwide He discussed topics raised by our students ranging from how to manage stage fright to cultivating your own art.

At a time when we're witnessing a huge global decline in biodiversity, and rapidly disappearing habitats, it's a great treat to see that one of our most charismatic species, the smooth-coated otter (Lutrogale perspicillata), is visiting KTJ again. The picture above is taken by KTJ’s equivalent of Sir David Attenborough, Adrian Nebbett (Head of Drama).

Outstanding Work Awards - 13th September

Congratulations to all our students who produce fantastic work every lesson. It’s a pleasure to be able to honour as many of you as we can!

Samuel Ko Xin Zhi designed a Robotic arm using a 3D printer and recyclable materials such as a used-up inhaler and his retainer box to put it together It works through a system of potentiometers and is controlled by an Arduino Uno. “I learned how to program it with C++ and the total cost of everything was around RM100.”

Ezra Simon spent his summer holidays playing football in Europe. He represented Malaysia for Kuala Lumpur Youth Soccer (KLYS) in the prestigious Gothia Cup in Sweden and the Dana Cup in Denmark. They played some tough teams from Sweden, Norway and Brazil and lost at the knockout round for the Gothia Cup, playing in rainy Scandinavian cold summers! The team qualified in the Group games for Dana but lost in the playoffs against another Brazilian team in 1/17 knockout round.

These experiences have forever changed him as an athlete playing at world class meets with some very talented footballers.

HOUSE NEWS

It was great to see houses out and about this past weekend for house night trips which provide a great opportunity for the students to become acquainted with their new (and existing) house groups. I would like to thank the house staff teams for all the hard work that goes into making these events possible.

Houses have been working extremely hard on their house singing performances with the live event taking place on Thursday evening at 19:45. It always proves to be a great night but this year was truly spectacular with the theme being Musical Theatre. Naquiyuddin just pipped Jawahir to the top title with a spine tingling performance. I am sure the students are all looking forward to a slightly ‘quieter’ week ahead. That said, football begins soon so practices for this event are already well under way!

CCA NEWS

Our students are very keen to get started with the remainder of this term’s CCA programme on Monday 18 September

The variety of options available is fantastic again this year with clubs and activities ranging from finance to technology; sports to classics, literature and the arts; interests in medicine, psychology and health and wellbeing; culinary skills; and our successful charitable and outreach societies. There really is something for everyone!

There are so many benefits to active participation in a range of CCAs Beyond simply being able to enjoy new experiences, students have the opportunity to interact with people of different ages in different settings, develop social skills, take on new challenges and solve unfamiliar problems whilst learning to manage their time and make considered decisions. Our CCAs really are a wonderful opportunity for our students to take their learning beyond the constraints of the classroom and to find out more about themselves

Some of our interesting new CCAs this term include robotics club, Financial Frontiers and aviation club. We also have the intriguingly named Monsters, Gods and Philosophers! The students and staff leading these new clubs as well as our other well-established clubs are looking forward to a busy term.
