NOTICE OF POTENTIAL AMENDMENT TO BYLAWS There will be a vote of the membership during the November 13 council meeting regarding proposed changes to the Council 3827 bylaws. The meeting begins at 7:30 pm. A two-thirds majority of the membership is required to amend the bylaws. Knights Fraternal I trust you all have had an opportunity to get to the Club to try the new items on our menu as well as Brenna’s wonderful soups, desserts and specials. Stop by, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

During the summer we again had a very successful Firemen’s Softball Tournament. We want to thank all of you who worked the event in whatever capacity.

You were all important to the tournament success.

We joined up with the Richfield Foundation to co-sponsor a Craft Beer Tasting at the Club, and it turned out to be a huge success. We hope to continue with this type of event in the future. Thank you to all our members and the Richfield Foundation members who contributed craft beers for the 5 walls of beer that were auctioned off. Thanks, too, to all those who planned, prepared and work at the event itself.

Grand Knights Message We’ve had some great news recently in that Fr. Bob Schwartz has agreed to join our council as Chaplain. Fr. Schwartz recently retired as Pastor of Our Lady of Grace parish in Edina and is currently assisting at St. Joseph’s in Rosemount for weekend Masses. He is a resident of Bloomington and is already a member of Marian Council and the Meagher Assembly. Those of you who have attended OLG already know what a great addition Fr. Bob will be to our council and the rest of us will find out soon. Father will be officiating at our Memorial Mass on November 7th so I encourage you to come that day to meet our new Chaplain and remember our departed brothers and aux-

iliary members from the past year.

Next a word on charity which is among the four pillars of our order. As always we’ll have many opportunities over the coming months to show our commitment to charity to ourselves and the community at large. The Special Olympics bowling event is a great way to get involved, particularly for new members. We’ll also continue to serve meals through Loaves and Fishes at the Hope Presbyterian church in Richfield. Finally I’d like to be able to continue what was started in the Coats for Kids program last year if we can come up with funding.

While I know that our Council’s commitment to charity is excellent, we still

require one key ingredient which we’re running in short supply of at the moment.

Charitable programs require leaders to set parameters and recruit willing hands for the task. Please consider stepping up to be a program chair in the coming months.

Don’t hide your light under a bushel!

Manager’s Message Looking to relieve some stress and make the upcoming holidays more enjoyable? Consider what your KC Hall has to offer:  It’s a great location for parties, dinner after shopping and planned or spur-of -the-moment happy hours with family and friends.  Our gift certificates are the perfect solution for those hard-to-buy-for folks on your shopping list. The certificates have no expiration date and are good for dinner on Wednesday through Saturday or any time the lounge is open.





For inexpensive indoor family fun, there’s prime time wrestling on Friday, Nov. 28, Dec. 19 and Jan. 30.  Mark your calendars for both the adult and children’s Christmas parties. You’ll find details elsewhere in the newsletter.  Don’t forget the members-only Open House on New Year’s Day. And, make a New Year’s resolution to have dinner once a month at the hall.

Respect Life Due to the fact that our ongoing efforts are to protest the presence of Planned Parenthood in Richfield, I want to briefly reflect back on three October events that continued to curtail this organization’s abortion referrals. On October 6th, we had our first meeting of the Council year with the program featuring Tammy Kocher, Executive Director of New Life Family Services that includes First Care Pregnancy Center with a new location in Richfield and Brian Gibson, Executive Director of Pro-Life Action Ministries, instrumental in our Planned Parenthood protests. On October 13th, we were able to express our gratitude to Brian and his ministry by attending PLAM’s Annual Life Banquet.

Finally, we had on October 18th, our second Pro-Life literature drop to Richfield residents. Our thanks to all who contributed to the success of these three events.

Moving forward let me now outline the three meetings scheduled for the calendar quarter for this issue. Our November 3 rd program will feature an update on the Robbinsdale Women’s Center, as presented by Peggy Benicke, Executive Director or a pertinent staff member. This ministry has succeeded, while by locating next to an abortion clinic and has added an ICU Mobile to further serve its clients. It will be an interesting and informative program for us to attend.

All of us look forward to our Annual Light Up for Christ Rosary, not only for the opportunity to vividly bring in the Advent season, but also to enjoy the concluding fellowship featuring the wide assortment of tasty Holiday treats prepared, as always, by Betty Cavanaugh.

This year’s program will be held on December 1st.

We bring in 2015 with our January 5th meeting that will have Viviana Sotros, Executive Director of Sagrada Familia, as our speaker. This family and pregnancy services center in located at Minneapolis St. Stephen’s Church and is one that our Respect for Life Committee is pleased to have supported from its inception. We know Viviana will have a deserved proud report on its progress.

All Respect for Life meetings are held on Monday evenings, starting with the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. in the Madonna Room. With the added challenge of Planned Parenthood, your attendance and support is even more needed. We hope you will join us.

Auxiliary Corner Ladies, we thoroughly enjoyed our Sept. meeting. We had pork loin plus fixings for dinner made by our fabulous chef Brenna. Our speakers were from Catholic Charities and St. Joseph’s Home for Children and they took our Joy of Giving items (school supplies) with them. It was amazing how many different peoples’ needs that they help with.

October 16th we will do a living rosary and all men, women and children are invited to help us fill in about 70 chairs.

Our January meeting is the 15th with Chicken Marsala. The speaker is a Bloomington police officer on fraud and the Joy of Giving is children’s books for the League Catholic Women’s Book Express.

Even if you don’t come for the meeting and delicious food (that you don’t have to cook) please help us out and the many charities that we give to and bring items to the office and tell Lisa (our wonderful secretary) that the items are for the auxiliary Joy of Giving.

Poor Clare Fund We will again be accepting donations for the Poor Clare fund. You can send in with your dues later this fall. In the last year we collected over $3,100 for this fund. Gene Drabek, Jim Haeg and Bill Weldon do many projects as needed by

the nuns. This year one of the projects was sealing the windows which cost over $1,000. The nuns notify these gentlemen when repairs or requests are made to change something for them. Thank you

to all who donate and also to these 3 gentlemen that are the contacts.

Navigator First of all I want to help as many men to join our ranks as 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree members and to become 4th Degree members. So if you are planning a membership drive at your parish call and let me know, even at the last minute.

Why join the Knights of Columbus? Did someone ask you? Did a wise parent steer you in the right direction? Did your boss ask, "Are you a member yet?" like mine did. Well now it's my turn and yours to ask someone. Like you, I did not join the Knights of Columbus to be a recruiter, but

we have a obligation to ask other men to join our ranks.

If you are a 3rd degree knight I would like to assist you in becoming a 4th degree member very soon. We are having a Fall Fourth Degree Exemplification in Shakopee on October 25, 2014 please call me right away at 952-985-0574 because time is short. There will be a Spring Exemplification here in town with more information coming in January.

On September 27, Faithful Al Douglass chaired our Good Times Picnic at St

Bonaventure and we announced our Faithful Admiral Sir Knight Ralph Bartolotta as our Sir Knight of the Year.

SK Ralph has been a star in our assembly and is currently working on the Get out the Vote Program November 4th.

Our 4th degree Christmas party and Ladies Appreciation Dinner will be on December 17th, information is in the Faithful Captains message in the Thomas Meagher Newsletter coming out soon.

Special Olympics Bowling Marian Council is again involved in the Special Olympics Bowling the week-end of November 14-16, 2014. Tom and Marilyn Mantel are again chairing the Friday evening banquet for the Special Olympics Bowling participants in Richfield with Marian Council members volunteering to participate. A sincere thank you to Deacon Jim and Bobbie McLaughlin who have chaired the Special Olympics Lane Monitor volunteers for years for Marian Council. Thanks to the Knights and spouses that have volunteered this year to be Special Olympics Lane Monitor volunteers at the Brunswick Zone in Lakeville (Country Road 46 and I-35) on Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 8:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. Volunteers will receive a shirt and a lunch during their volunteer time. It is a very rewarding experience for all of us who participate in this wonderful event. The initial deadline was October 15 to provide the volunteers contact information and shirt size to Minnesota Knights of Columbus Special Olympics Chairman Dan Irvin for submission to Special Olympics of Minnesota to do background checks on volunteers.

Pancake and French Toast Breakfast We will to thank the members of Risen Savior, Our Lady of Peace and St. Bonaventure for serving the breakfast held in September. We especially want to thank Leo Fair and Tom Mantel for coordinating and getting the workers.

Our profit from the event was $542.

There will not be another breakfast in the lounge until next fall.

Minnesota Knights Foundation The Minnesota Knights Foundation was set up to offer grants for projects involving youth, education, vulnerable adults, senior citizens and other things of that nature. The original idea was to receive funds and when the amount was $1,000,000, the interest would be used for grants to be matched. A few years ago this figure was obtained. The funds are invested with the Supreme Council and once a year an interest check is received. There is an application process to apply for these grants. Each year the raffle receives about $150,000 with half going back to the councils. Of the remaining, $25,000 is cost of the raffle including prizes and the other $50,000 is sent to the Supreme Council to be invested.

When you receive your dues notice, the raffle tickets will be included. When you purchase, half is given back to our council which is a fund raiser for us. The unfortunate thing is that our council has not had a winner from the raffle since we began the program. The winners of the raffle are always drawn and announced at the state convention held every May. Maybe you will be a lucky winner this time!!!

Brat Stand at Cub I wish to thank all the people that worked at the brat stand at Cub on the weekend of Sept 19th through the 21st. It took 36 people to work and fortunately we had nice weather. We will get $450 from Cub for the 3 days and the tips were $316.87 which will go into the seminarian fund as donations to seminarians.

Home Association As the seasons change, we have projects to do around the house. Painting, washing windows, finishing projects that we had started when the weather was nice and a hundred other jobs. Well it's the same thing at the KC Hall. We had a cleanup day across the street, clearing out the weeds and junk along side of the sidewalk. This was accomplished by Julian Hynnek as lead with volunteers Ken Ralph, Pat Nelson, Dick Malicki, Gene Crossen and Jim Scheib cooking out in the sun. Relaxing afterwards with refreshments in the cool lounge soon made the chore more manageable.

The west wall of the building needed a fresh coat of paint and Deputy Grand Knight Rodney Tholen headed up this project with the scraping and painting crew of Doc Williams, Julian Hynnek,

John Jakala, Dick Malicki, Ned O’Doherty, John Kovach, Ted Pietrini, Pat Nelson, Rodney Tholen, Dick Geyen, and Bill Weldon. The wall had some additional work to be done patching the concrete block work where old window air conditioners had been installed. Now the wall looks very nice with the volunteers' work and we can appreciate the building more.

You may have noticed that the parking lots have been sealed coated with freshly painted parking stripping, a project Doc Williams headed. It was a project that we have not had done in a long time. Thanks, Doc for getting it done before winter.

The roof-top air conditioner had work done to fix hail damage it suffered last summer. We also installed hail guards on the unit to prevent damage in the future.

The Hall is a large building for a few volunteers to maintain. We take pride in our building and make work days fun.

We'd love your help next time around.

We are still looking at the Madonna Room window project. The windows are only single pane and the room can get really hot when the furnace comes on then drops in temperature to the point that you want to put your jacket back on. Also the curtains are old and need to be retired. If you can help us save some energy and make the room more pleasant please call me.

Lecturer Program Our Lecturer Program on Thursday, January 22, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. will be Kevin Nelson, Marian Council Knights of Columbus Insurance Agent since March, 2013. Kevin Nelson has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since April of 2012. He has achieved the designation of FIC (Fraternal Insurance Counselor).

Kevin was a recipient of the Supreme Knights Club early achievers award. Prior to becoming a Knights of Columbus Insurance Agent, he worked in the bank-

ing industry and the stock market industry for Wells Fargo for 5 years. Kevin is married and has 2 children, ages 4 and 1.

Kevin should have a very interesting presentation to us about the Knights of Columbus products that are available and the value that he brings to our families.

He is a firm believer in the mission of Father McGivney and believes that all families should be protected from the financial hardship of a deceased love one.

The Lecturer Program will begin at 8:00 p.m. after our short meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Members, spouses and/or significant others and guests are welcome for our Lecturers programs. After our Lecturer Program, we will go upstairs to the lounge for socializing, treats and cash bar.

District Deputy Jay Taylor, Past Grand Knight Mike Gigot, State Deputy Joe Konrardy, and Grand Knight Tony Spano receiving the Columbian Award and the International Award for fourth place for council activities.

State Deputy Joe Konrardy attended our brotherhood dinner, rosary, and business meeting. He commended our parish Round Tables and recognized 50-year members. He greeted new members and exhorted them to get involved (they already have).

SD Konrardy presented the Marian Council with the Columbian Award for the 2013-14 fiscal year for completing four activities in each of six program categories.

SD Konrardy also presented the Marian Council with a 4 th Place International Service Program Award for last summer’s Fortnight for Freedom prayer services. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops highlighted new threats to religious liberty, especially Obamacare’s requirement that religious organizations provide abortion coverage in their health plans. The bishops urged a “Fortnight for Freedom,” fourteen days of prayer ending on Independence Day. Tom Mantel and Deacon Jim McLaughlin organized nightly prayer services at the hall. Ten deacons took turns leading the Rosary, Litany for Liberty, and petitions. Attendance varied, but all our parishes were represented.

At May’s state convention, awards are given for the best council activities. Marian Council won first, second, or third place in almost every category of judging. First-place winners from each state and province --from Poland to the Philippines-- were judged again at August’s Supreme Convention in Orlando. Three Marian Council reports were among them.
