FINANCIAL SECRETARY’S CORNER Worthy Officers and Brothers All: Happy New Year! 2012 has arrived and with it the chance for new beginnings, second chances and a renewal of commitments to the things that we hold dear. One of those, I hope, is the Knights of Columbus. In 2011, we were awarded our second consecutive Star Council Award and, for the first time, eclipsed the 200 member mark. We donated over $10,000 to local charities, spent thousands of man Allen Venezio hours in the service of our parish and community and worked selflessly on many projects that helped those less fortunate than ourselves. Our council should be very proud of its accomplishments. Remember, Brothers, we can't do it without ALL of you and each of you is vital to the success of our Council. Together we can do amazing things in 2012! Thursday night, our Council will present its third First Degree Exemplification Ceremony of the year. Three new Brother Knights will be welcomed into the Council. The Degree beings at 7:00 PM and I hope many of you will come out and support the Team and these strangers as they begin their journey towards full Knighthood in our beloved Order. There will be a Second and Third Degree Exemplification Ceremony on Saturday, January 21st in Melbourne. If you are interested in either or both of these degrees, please contact me ASAP. The Second Degree is free to take and the Third Degree costs $10. This is payable at the Degree. All Candidates should make sure they have their membership card with them and be dressed in a coat and tie. No name badges or other identifying items (such as dress shirts with names embroidered) are permitted for Candidates of the Third Degree. As the Council's Financial Secretary, I have passed the midway point of my three-year appointed term. I have learned so much from all of you and am grateful to each of you for your trust, loyalty and friendship. I look forward to continuing my service to each of you and to this Council for the next year and a half. On a personal note, 2012 will, God willing, be the year I achieve a personal goal of earning my Masters Degree in Music Education. Most of you know that I have been studying this past year in an online program through Boston University. So, in addition to working full time, my musical obligations and my Knights duties, I am also a full-time college student. If all goes well, I will graduate in September and I am very excited about this as it represents something I've wanted to do for many years. We have some very big events coming up, including the Tootsie Roll Drive next month and the 6th Annual Charity Golf Classic. If you are looking for ways to get involved, these are two BIG ones! Also, recruit a new member! That's something you can do virtually any day you choose. We are always looking for good Catholic men to join with us in support of Holy Mother Church. To you all, I hope you have a blessed New Year and that 2012 brings you much happiness and joy. Vivat Jesus! Allen

Some Things To Ponder From Your Field Agent

FORTY MEMBERS DIED YESTERDAY

Donald F. Gelinas

Forty-three Knights of Columbus members died yesterday and, only, seventeen of them had Knights of Columbus life insurance or annuities to protect their families. If you died tomorrow would you be one of the twenty-six members without Knights of Columbus benefits. Why?

As a Knights of Columbus member and a Catholic gentlemen, we have a responsibility to protect our wife and family. Why did twenty-six Knights of Columbus members die yesterday without having the excellent protection provided by the Knights of Columbus for their families? The Knights of Columbus is ranked in the top 1% of all the insurance companies in the world. Only 4 companies in the world have our lofty ratings. Our whole life policies are less expensive and grow faster than similar policies available from commercial insurance companies. Our Long Term Care protection is one of the best in the industry and our annuities provide substantially greater interest than bank CDs. Therefore, why will twenty-six members die tomorrow without taking advantage of one of these great Knights of Columbus benefits? Give me a Call. Knights of Columbus Insurance Donald F. The Communicator Our Next Assembly Meeting is Thursday January 12th at 7:00pm Dear Sir Knights Significant events: Jan. 14th our Bishop will be at Blessed Sacrament to usher in the celebration of our parish 50th year. Sir Knights in regalia will be assembled for both the 4 PM and 7 Pm masses that day. Sir Knight Don Morrissey will be contacting all. There will be a Fourth Degree Exemplification on Feb. 4th 2012 at St. Leo Catholic Church in Bonita Springs, FL. Cut off for input of the Form 4 to the Faithful Navigator is Jan 16th and room reservations must be made by Jan. 20th. Please contact me ASAP if you know of a candidate. Color Guard marched , along with the Council and Squires, in the December Downtown Clermont parade. See Photos. We had a great turn out and many favorable comments were heard as we marched by. I must say our Assembly Color Guard , under the leadership of SK Don Gelinas, is the most professional team I have seen. If you are interested in joining and being certified please contact Don. We look forward to representing this Assembly and Central Florida in future 4th Degree Exemplifications. By the time you receive this newsletter the highs of celebrating the Holidays will be behind us. Iʼm sure most of us will recall the Mass we went to for Christmas, the presents we gave and received, the great food we had ( in some cases to much), the friends and relations we saw and those we missed and the football games we were happy or sad about. I wonder how many of us will remember the purpose of the events we just celebrated. Sure we bought and displayed the “Keep Christ in Christmas” signs and put up the manger and wished each other a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year- but what happens now that the days are over? One eventChristmas- signifies that Jesus came to earth many years ago as a baby but also the Son of God in the flesh. In the short space of the Church Calendar year we will relive his Thirty three years and be present at his death and Resurrection. What will we do this year to celebrate the coming of the Christ? Hopefully it will be something more than attending the Christmas Mass. New YEAR-The other event with its fireworks and parties and wishes marks a time to start anew. We talk about losing weight, joining the gym, improving ourselves medically, financially, etc. What other things need our attention that could be more important- a pro-life issue, insurance to protect the future of a loved one, a retreat to renew our moral compass, volunteer help to a local food bank or adult assisted living facility. We as Knights, no matter what degree, have the ability as a group and as individuals to beneficially affect the lives of those around us, as well as ourselves. Take the time to review the meaning of all Four Degrees and see where you can bring those into your daily life as a Catholic gentleman. Pete Stauder Faithful Navigator

Catholics That Helped Shaped America Commodore John Barry John Barry was Philadelphia’s Irish mariner known as the "Father of the American Navy," a title bestowed on him by his contemporaries in 1813. Born in 1745 in County Wexford, Ireland, Barry determined at an early age that his fame and fortune would come from the high seas. He worked his way up from cabin boy to ship’s captain, and adopted Philadelphia as his home port. He developed his command skills at the helm of several merchant ships sailing between Philadelphia and the West Indies. Barry is known for his leadership and courage in the Revolutionary War, where he was victorious in nearly twenty naval engagements versus the British. When the Revolutionary War started, he was given a commission as Captain in the Continental Navy on March 14, 1776. Entrusted with command of the USS Lexington, Barry was credited with the first capture of a British warship by a commissioned American cruiser. He was the only Continental Captain to make a series of double captures. When the Revolutionary War ended and the Navy dissolved, Barry returned to the maritime trade, sailing to China and other foreign ports. However, Barbary pirate raids on American shipping brought about the Navy’s revival. On June 4, 1794, he was selected senior captain of the Federal Navy and received Commission Number One from President Washington. Barry played a vital role in establishing the earliest traditions of the Navy in serving faithfully to protect the rights of the sovereign United States. John Barry remained head of the Navy until his death on September 12, 1803. He received his country’s last salute in a full military burial in Old St. Mary’s Churchyard on September 14, 1803. U.S. Navy has named four destroyers in honor of John Barry, including: USS Barry (Destroyer # 2), 1902-1920; USS Barry (DD-248, later APD-29), 1920-1945; USS Barry (DD-933), 1956-____; and USS Barry (DDG-52), 1992-____.
