Worthy Brothers All: Springtime is just around the corner and I am sure you all feel it, right? Well, maybe not this past weekend, but it is, indeed, coming. We are in the process of removing 17 brothers from our rolls and are in need of some quality men to replace them. If you know anyone who would be an asset to our Council and our Order, please invite them to join and give them a Form 100. We will hold a First Deg ree Exemplification Ceremony in March or early April so the chance to get them in is now! I would like to congratulate the First Degree Team on a great job at our last Ceremony and to welcome our newest Brother Knights. We are glad to have you and hope that you find value and worth in your Knights membership. New Brothers and those of you who are associate members, I urge to you to speak to Brother Donald Gelinas, our Fraternal Benefits Counselor, if you have not done so already. He has some great Insurance and Annuity products that may benefit you! March is Founders Month and March 29th is Founder’s Day. This marks the date in 1882 where the Knights of Columbus was recognized as an official organization by the state of Connecticut (the order was actually formed in late 1881). As you already know, our founder is the Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney and prayers for his beatification are strongly encouraged this month.

feel it is my duty to honor his wishes, regardless of my personal feelings. I have always felt that the confidence of the Grand Knight is paramount in this position and without it, I do not feel I should rightfully continue to serve. With this being said, my last day in this position will be April 25, 2013, the end of my three-year appointment. I will use my column next month to express my feelings and emotions, but, for now, I ask for your prayers as I finish out my tenure and prayers also for my successor, whomever that may be. I hope you all have a very blessed Holy Week and Easter and may the light of the risen Christ shine upon you all. Allen Financial Secretary

On a personal note, it is my solemn responsibility to report that I have been asked to step down as the Council’s Financial Secretary by our Grand Knight, James Laria. As serving in this capacity is at the pleasure of the Grand Knight, I

Having been raised a Catholic, and being primarily of French and Irish descent, I have always been somewhat fond of Notre Dame Football. As a kid, I wondered how the Universityʼs founding fathers came up with the name Notre Dame Fighting Irish. However, football season is over, and with St. Patrickʼs Day quickly approaching, I thought I would talk a little about the famous Catholic Saint.

r’s e r u t c Le Notes

St. Patrick was born in Britain in the year 387 to a prominent Roman family. When Patrick was approximately sixteen, he was taken captive by pirates and held as a slave in Ireland, where over the next six years, he would work tending sheep. There, Patrick would gradually learn the Celtic language, and at the same time became familiar with the Druids (The pagan priests that served the people as teachers, Judges, and the tribal kingsʼ advisors). He eventually escaped, returned to his home in Britain, and decided to enter a monastery in Gaul. In 432, after serving twenty years as a Monk, Patrick was made a Bishop, and was sent back to Ireland to spread the good news, and help convert the many pagans living in Ireland at the time. He introduced a new approach to spreading the faith by establishing monasteries throughout the island. The early Monks residing in the monasteries came from Gaul (modern day France). Eventually the Irish converts (later becoming Monks themselves) meant that more monasteries could be established. One of the tools St. Patrick used for teaching the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity was the Shamrock, a three leafed clover found throughout the island. Patrick chose the Shamrock because it had been viewed as sacred in the pre-Christian days of Ireland. From this time on, the Shamrock has continued to be the traditional symbol for St. Patrickʼs Day. Legend has it that while on a religious pilgrimage of fast and prayer, Patrick was attacked by many snakes. St. Patrick is believed to have banished all the snakes from Ireland by raising his staff and chasing them into the sea. Whatever the truth of the legend of St. Patrick may be, we can attribute the spreading of the Faith through his many deeds. For the Good of the Order, I plan on showing a short K of C themed video at our upcoming meeting. Mike Ogden - Lecturer NIGHTS OF COLUMBUS #13240 PO BOX 121061 CLERMONT, FL 34712-1061 K

In 1924, Jim Crow laws were still being enforced in many parts of the United States and the height of the civil rights movement was still 40 years away. Yet at that time, the Knights of Columbus commissioned and published The Gift of Black Folk: The Negroes in the Making of America by famous civil rights proponent W.E.B. DuBois. The book presented the varied contributions of Black Americans from the earliest colonial settlements through World War I and the early 1920s.
