Visit the Outdoor Recreation Equipment Center For All Your Outdoor Activity Needs “Spring is on the way and the Outdoor Recreation Equipment Center is ready with a wide variety of outdoor supplies,” said Heather Wahl, Manager of the Fort Knox Outdoor Recreation Center. “Our extensive equipment inventory can provide fun and enjoyment for outdoor activities.” The Center offers a wide variety of boats. Canoes and kayaks are available for leisurely paddling or perhaps trying a bit of whitewater activity. Those who are interested in “catching the big-one” can rent Bass boats equipped with trolling motors, fish finders, live wells and navigation lights. For water skiers there are Ski boats with 90 hp or 135 hp motors, skis and kneeboards. Towards the end of last summer, the Center received several new 135 hp Ski boats. Each can accommodate up to 7 people. For others who enjoy the company of family and friends for a fun-time on the water, the Center now has three pontoon boats: 24’, 90 hp, 12 person; 21’, 60 hp, 9 person; and 18’, 40 hp 7 person. To rent any boat with a gasoline engine, a boater safety class is required. Classes are available at the Center Tuesdays through Thursdays for a $3.00 fee. Classes are also available through “The Boat USA Foundation” at www.boatus.org. A card will be issued at the Center upon completion of the course. Proof of boater safety class from other Military installations, from any State or from the Coast Guard is also accepted. For those who enjoy camping in the great outdoors, the Center has all types of camping equipment including tents, sleeping bags, lanterns, stoves and campers that sleep

4 to 6 people. Also available are travel trailers equipped with air conditioning, stove, furnace, shower and toilet. For backyard activities, including Unit organization days or fundraisers, grills, pig cookers, dunking machines, folding tables, chairs, coolers, canopies, sports equipment and inflatable bouncing houses for children, can be rented. Other yard items available are garden tillers, lawn movers, log splitters, generators, extension ladders, utility trailers and hand tools. Reservations for certain items are accepted 30 days in advance. Specials rates are available for items that are checked out on a Friday and returned on the following Monday. Special rates also apply for items that are rented by the week. “Our Center is not limited to rental items. We also offer repair service on outboard motors including tune-ups at considerable savings compared to other outboard motor repair facilities in the area. Give us a call at (502) 624-2314, for more detailed information on what we have available. Our friendly staff will be happy to provide information on boating and camping area locations,” said Wahl. The Outdoor Recreation Equipment Center serves all Active Duty and retired Military, National Guard, Reserves, DoD Civilians and their Families. The Outdoor Recreation Equipment Center is located in Building 4244 at the corner of Chaffee and Park Road. Please call (502) 6242314 for more information. www.KnoxMWR.comŇ0DUFKŇ

SPRING INTO INTRAMURAL SPORTS Out like a lion, in like a lamb. The mantra of spring brings hope of warming weather and outdoor activity. As the spring thaw is upon us, the FMWR Intramural Sports Program is preparing for a flurry of activity on the courts and fields with a busy spring sports schedule. “We take sports very seriously. The yearly schedule, which begins in October, is packed with leagues and tournaments. But the spring season is generally the busiest and most active sports season,” said Intramural Sports Director, Adrian Bogle. As the winter season of basketball winds down in March, the co-ed volleyball season will get underway. Volleyball plays March 13 - June 1 on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Register by March 6. A pre-season tournament is scheduled for March 13. Most Intramural Sports begin with a pre-season tournament and coaches meeting. “The purpose is to provide training for refs, practice for teams, recruit players, and win a trophy. It’s very competitive,” said Bogle. Several sports have registration deadlines in March. Racquetball registration ends March 21. A racquetball tournament will take place March 24-25 at Natcher PFC. Individuals, doubles and mixed categories are available. Co-ed soccer runs April 1-June 1, but players must be registered by March 27. The Over-30-Basketball-3on3-League also ends registration on March 28. This league plays 20 minute games from April 4 - May 30 at Natcher Gym from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM on Tuesdays. A co-ed 3-on-3 basketball tournament is scheduled for the last weekend in April at Natcher PFC. Players must be registered by April 17.

Softball season plays May 1 - August 16, Monday through Thursday. In addition to the co-ed league, Bogle states, “We are looking into an all-female league based on interest.” While the golf season doesn’t officially start until June 5 at Lindsey Golf Course on Tuesday nights, the registration deadline is May 29. Family and MWR Intramural Sports are played in conjunction with the Commander’s Cup Challenge. Each unit has the opportunity to accumulate points throughout the year based on participation in league play and tournaments. The unit with the most points at the end of the fiscal year will win the trophy. “The purpose of the Commander’s Cup is to get commanders involved and to encourage units to participate in Intramural Sports,” said Bogle. “It’s a morale builder and a goal to bring home the trophy.” According to Bogle, the Marines have won the Commander’s Cup Challenge trophy the last three years in a row. “If you win the trophy three years in a row, the unit keeps it and Family and MWR buys a new one. We just purchased the newest $1,100 trophy.” Intramural Sports are open to Military & Family, Fort Knox employees, and Military Retirees. However, athletes must be 18 years or older, out of high school and not enrolled in college. Intramural Sports are free, with the exception of bowling and golf. To register for an Intramural Sport, call Bogle at (502) 624-1247 or (270) 272-4873, or email adrian.l.bogle.naf@mail.mil. www.KnoxMWR.comŇ)HEUXDU\Ň

FORT KNOX BOSS PROGRAM,

SAME MISSION, NEW LOOK

The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) Program supports the overall quality of single Soldiers' lives. BOSS identifies real Soldier well being issues and concerns by recommending improvements through the chain of command. BOSS encourages and assists single Soldiers in identifying and planning for recreational and leisure activities. Additionally, it gives single Soldiers the opportunity to participate in and contribute to their respective communities. The BOSS Program is a demonstration of the chain of command’s commitment to single Soldiers. The new BOSS President, SGT Tim Rhodes, and the Vice President, PFC Michael Sheppard, have approached this program with an attitude that is unmatched here at Fort Knox. They have been working since the day of appointment. They are diligently working to re-commit themselves and fellow single Soldiers to Army Values and to revitalize the Quality of Life that is commensurate of the Single Soldier service. In addition, they are working on a BOSS Recreation Center. This is a building for the Fort Knox BOSS Program, filled with state-of-the-art equipment, including pool tables, X-Box gaming stations, big screen televisions, a resource library and much more! This new building will be opening this Spring. This building will be dedicated strictly to the BOSS Soldiers. It’s a place that will be theirs in which to relax, unwind and enjoy the camaraderie of their counterparts. BOSS is always looking for new members, as well as participants to share in the activities and recreational opportunities that are available for single Soldiers. “Being a Single Soldier is tough,” SGT Rhodes states. “BOSS provides the opportunity to do something other than doing the being single stuff. Join other Single Soldiers and become a Voice, give back to the community and enjoy the Army way of life!” Who can be a member of BOSS? Single Soldiers, unaccompanied Soldiers and single parents may become members. For more information, contact the BOSS Office and speak to either SGT Rhodes or PFC Sheppard at 624-BOSS (2677).
