KIDS FASCHING Fort Knox Family and MWR presented "Kids Fasching" on February 10. Kids Fasching was a huge success for the whole family to enjoy. Over a timespan of 3 hours, over 200 guests (75% children, 25% adults) danced, ate, drank, participated in games and contests and had a wonderful time. For the grand prizes in each age category, we decided to focus on fitness this year. All prizes including door prizes were for the outdoors. 4.30 out of 5 said that they experienced increased family unity. 4.57 out of 5 said that they experienced an increase in their morale.

DEVERS PROVIDES FUN ACTIVITIES FOR TEENS By Heather Whelan If you are a military family new to the area, or working parents looking for after school programs for your teens, then you need to know that Devers Middle School and Teen Center offers a fabulous program for youths in grades 6th through 12th. I recently had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with the Devers staff and students. I received the grand tour beginning in the gym where a group was actively involved in a basketball game. Students were not only participating in the games as players, some were running the score board, others cheering on each team, and the stands were filled with fans. I spoke with Zach Nykowksi, an 8th grader who attends Scott Middle School. Zach’s family moved to this area in October 2012, and Zach says, “I have been coming here ever since then. I love it.” I asked Zach what was his favorite thing at the center and he said, “the basketball and the food. We get great food here.” I met a 7th grader from North Middle School, Alexis Bishop. Alexis has had a different experience with the center. When her family first arrived to Fort Knox last summer she did not know anyone that attended the center. However, after Alexis started school, she made new friends and soon discovered that the Center offered a variety of activities. Alexis is now heavily involved with the clubs at Devers. “I enjoy Smart Girls and Photography. I look forward to coming here every day after school, the people are fun and and its a great way for me to meet people. Plus, Ms. Shala (LesMaster, a staff member with Devers) is cool.”
Eddie Ragland, Director at Devers, said, “There is always an activity of some kind taking place at this center. If you are looking to get your middle school or high school student involved, this is the place to be.” Devers will offer seven weeks of camp this summer, four in June and three in July. Signups for camp begins April 8, and campers are encouraged to sign up quickly, as space is limited, and they fill up soon. If a week of camp is not for you – not to worry. Weekend adventure trips are planned as well. Activities such as zip line and canoeing are on the agenda. Recently, Devers partnered with Big Brothers/Big Sisters to offer an on-site mentorship program. Youth and their parents need to inquire at Devers to get an application for the mentorship program. Youths will then be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister for a one hour weekly interaction at Devers. “The most rewarding part of my job is being able to witness students’ success, when they return for a visit and share that they have recently graduated from college or landed their dream job. We are very proud of each and every student that comes through our program. We are honored to be a part of children’s lives,” said Ragland. VOLUNTEERS STRENGTHENING A NATION

National Volunteer Week began in 1974 as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers. Since then, the original emphasis on the celebration has widened; the week has become a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their communities. National Volunteer Week will be celebrated April 21 – 27 and the Fort Knox Army Volunteer Corps will be recognizing its outstanding volunteers here on Fort Knox. It is required that all installation volunteers apply for volunteer opportunities, register, track volunteer hours and maintain a complete volunteer service record on the Volunteer Management Service Information System (VMIS). Fort Knox currently has 215 organizations, including Family Readiness Groups, in the VMIS. Within those 215 organizations, there are 2,729 registered volunteers. Yolande Smalls, Army Volunteer Corps Manager, said, “I know there are a lot more volunteers out there but they aren’t registered and do not track their hours. It is a shame because without them, Fort Knox wouldn’t be what we are. The volunteers are the backbone for a lot of organizations.” Many of the Fort Knox programs would not exist without volunteers and their service. The Child, Youth & School Services Sports & Fitness Program is one of the most popular programs on post that utilizes volunteers as a main component of its activities.These volunteer coaches teach the kids the fundamentals of the sport, teamwork and sportsmanship. “Every coach, assistant coach and team parent you see working on the field or on the court is donat-
ing their time to the youth athletes. This is just one program that would not exist without volunteers. Scouts, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Fort Knox Spouses and Community Club are just a few more,” said Smalls. From March 2011 to March 2012, Fort Knox registered 49,115 volunteer hours. In that year’s time, the Fort Knox installation saved $866,880. This year, the Fort Knox Volunteer Corps is hoping to surpass that amount. The 2012 to 2013 results will be announced at the Fort Knox Annual Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Ceremony on April 25. The ceremony will recognize outstanding volunteers. The Outstanding Volunteers of the Year will be announced for six different categories: Youth, Active Duty, Family Member, Family Team, Civilian, and Retirees. In order to be nominated, an adult has to have at least 200 volunteer hours in VMIS and youths must have at least 75 volunteer hours. A panel of community leaders selects the winners for each category. An information table and volunteer display honoring volunteers of the Fort Knox community will be on exhibit at the Fort Knox Exchange Mall on April 26. In addition, the National Volunteer Week “Nothing But Fun” picnic will be April 27, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Eastman Park. This is a free event and open to all installation volunteers and their families. If you are interested in volunteering, there are still 1,248 post positions available in VMIS. LOUISVILLE REPORTER DISCUSSES CAREER By Michael Steinmacher
Local TV staple Barry Bernson will discuss his book Bernson’s Corner: A Reporter's Notebook on Thursday, April 11, at 6:00 PM at Barr Library as part of the Authors At Your Library series. Bernson is known throughout the local television community for his many years reporting on and featuring local personalities with unique stories. Bernson’s career spans nearly five decades, beginning with his work in his home town of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. He would later move to Louisville, becoming a radio news anchor for WAVE-970. His television career began in 1970 and he hosted a popular, long-running feature series called “WAVE Country” on Louisville’s WAVE 3. He would later take his folksy style of reporting on common people with uncommon stories to Chicago. He later returned to the Louisville market for WHAS 11 and, most recently, FOX 41, where he served as the anchor of Fox in the Morning. Bernson recalls that the idea for his book started years ago, noting, “Throughout my reporting career, many people (colleagues and viewers) suggested I find some way of preserving the stories I'd been telling for so many years.” The result is Bernson’s Corner: A Reporter’s Notebook, a witty memoir written in the lighthearted style Bernson brought to his television work. Bernson notes that he was originally going to simply transcribe some of his stories prefaced with an introduction, but that when a friend read his work, “she liked the introduction better than the scripts,” Bernson said. He then added, “It got longer and longer.” Mr. Bernson will discuss his work, answer questions and autograph copies of Bernson's Corner: A Reporter's Notebook. SEAFOOD CUCUMBER SALAD 1 lb Imitation Crabmeat, ¾ inch chop 12 ounces Cucumber, ½ inch dice ½ cup Green Onions, chopped Dressing: ½ cup Mayonnaise 2 tsp Lemon Juice 2 tablespoons Dijon Mustard 2 tsp Lobster Base 1 cup Sour Cream Combine dressing ingredients in a bowl and mix well. If lobster base is not available, some other seafood base can be used, or using a seafood seasoning like Old Bay seasoning. Next, combine all other ingredients. Chill before serving.
