Community demonstrates value of green space as two housing plans shelved Knowle West residents who came together to “demonstrate the value” of green space are celebrating their success – with the council shelving two housing schemes in the area. And community groups are now looking forward to seeing how these spaces on the Western Slopes (Novers Hill) and at Knowle West Health Park can be used and improved for people to enjoy. Bristol City Council announced earlier this year, following an ecological report, that controversial proposals for new homes on the Slopes would be scaled down to protect “the important wildlife corridor”. The land was originally earmarked by Goram Homes for 360 houses on the southern part of the site, which is council-owned.

The developer has now been allocated a smaller area of brownfield land on the old school site near Belstone Walk and part of the stables – where around 70 homes can be built. The council will also be holding a public consultation with South Bristol residents to discuss the Western Slopes in the spring. Friends of the Western Slopes, a group battling to save the nature-rich site, says members are “proud and relieved” - and want it to be officially named a Site of Nature Conservation Interest.
