New foodbank to open at St Barnabas Church

Knowle West will see a new foodbank opening this October – at a time when soaring costs are hitting local families hard.

The face-to-face clinic at St Barnabas Church on Daventry Road will also have support workers, who can talk to people and give advice about any issues they are facing.

The foodbank will be open every Wednesday – but anyone needing an emergency food parcel will need to be referred by community agencies such as schools, advice centres and GPs. partnership with Knowle West Alliance

There are currently other foodbanks at the Salvation Army in Padstow Road, open on Thursdays and Sundays (see p 15) and at Ilminster Avenue Nursery School.

The new facility will be a base for the Vineyard BS4 Foodbank Outlet – established in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic – and one of six that make up South and East Bristol Foodbank.

Vineyard BS4 Foodbank Outlet Coordinator, Kate MacLeod says: “In the last 12 months we have delivered 630 emergency food parcels, feeding 934 adults and 666 children across the BS4 area, which is double the number delivered during the previous year.

Who are we?

Officially launched in spring 2019 - the Knowle West Alliance is a growing network of local residents, organisations and business.

What do we do?

Knowle West Alliance (KWA) is about working together - we collaborate and we support each other. We believe that everyone has something to contribute, and we seek out opportunities for people to have a say on things that matter to them. We know that people have different opinions about what is important,

Working Group Voices

I’m chairman of the market, a local resident and businessman. I’ve been a member of the Alliance for coming up to two years now.

Everyone is welcome - and we believe by working together we can achieve more.

We currently have three parttime employees: Lucy Holburn (Alliance Coordinator), Frances Coates (Community Development Worker) and Claudia Collins who is just starting as Community

and that every voice should be heard. We believe in locally-led, grassroots action which is why we run a Small Grants Programme (see p 3).

We believe in the power of a connected community which is why we are proud to partner with so many residents, local groups and organisations; providing support and

Communication Facilitator (see p 3). Our Working Group, made up of active local residents and workers, meets monthly to direct the Alliance work.

opportunities to come together, learn and take action about important local issues. Everyone is welcome, anyone who wants the best for Knowle West is part of the picture – together we are better! #WeAreKnowleWest

I wanted to know what was going on in the area, get involved and give something back to the community.

It’s important to bring the community together to form better relationships between groups and individuals. With the Alliance, we’ve got one central hub – it’s a bit of a tool box: people can use what they want and pass on knowledge to others.

I think there’s a lot more joining up of groups and sharing of information now as well as more community engagement.

issues they’re facing and reduce the need to use a foodbank again in the future…”

Associate Minister at St Barnabas, the Rev Dr Trevor Dean said: “We are really pleased that by having a local base the foodbank will be able to offer even more vital support to many in the local community at a time of real financial challenge.”

The Matthew Tree Project in Filwood, which also offers crisis support, paused its service due to funding issues in May. The charity re-started helping existing clients again in July and is hoping to take new referrals from October (see p 10).

The new clinic, part of the Bristol Charity inHope and national network of Trussell Trust Foodbanks, will be open every Wednesday at St Barnabas, 12.30 - 2pm from October 19. To volunteer email bs4@sebristol.foodbank.org.uk

There is also a free Help through

Local Communication Update

The Alliance is grateful to the National Lottery Fund which has recognised our network approach – and is providing three years of funding to continue the partnership.

As part of that award, we will be able to carry on producing and delivering The Knowledge newsletter (which was sadly discontinued due to lack of funding just before COVID struck in 2020 and had temporarily been revived since with an uncertain future).

We know it is a vital source of information for many and place to celebrate the community and everything happening here. We will also review and improve the community website (www.knowlewest.co.uk) to enhance this shared resource for residents and organisations.

We would love to get more community reporters involved and hear even more local voices – if you’d like free community journalism training please contact Knowledge editor Sue by emailing sue@kwmc.org.uk

Cost of Living Crisis

With news of energy bills going up yet again most of us will be concerned about rising costs this winter.

What we know is that many people are already facing fuel poverty locally – and lots of people will be facing it for the first time. We want to ensure that everyone who needs support knows where to find it.

Direct Financial Support (details correct at time of publication).

1. Bristol City Council has set up a webpage with full details of a range of support available. This includes the Local Crisis Prevention fund, where you can apply for a one-off grant to help with school uniform costs, bills or food. Visit: www.bristol .gov.uk/residents/people-andcommunities/cost-of-living-support

2. You may get a payment to help with the cost of living if you're getting certain benefits or tax credits. If you're eligible, the government will have given you a £326 Cost of Living Payment on or after July 14 and a second payment of £324 is due in the autumn.

3. All homes will receive a one-off £400 energy bill discount from their supplier, which will not need to be repaid. The discount will be directly applied to your energy bills over a six-month period from October, no matter how you pay for your energy.

4. Priority Services Register: Energy suppliers have a legal obligation to support customers who need more help because of personal circumstances –ask your energy supplier to put you on their Priority Register if your household contains:

• Anyone of state pension age

• Anyone with a disability, longterm health or mental health condition

• Anyone with a hearing or sight impairment

• Anyone recovering from an injury or hospital stay

• A pregnant person or young children (under five years old)

• Anyone with extra communication needs eg literacy or language

5. Some suppliers are part of the Warm Homes Discount Scheme. This gives people who receive pension credit, or are on low income and some types of benefit, help with electricity bills. If you are eligible, your supplier should let you know in November, however you could contact them directly to enquire about it sooner.

6. Home Energy Efficiency Improvements – re:work will be running free, practical workshops to improve your home's energy efficiency (see article p18).

7. More support schemes – as different kinds of support become available, it is worth checking that you are getting everything that you are entitled to – the organisations below will hold up-to-date information and guidance:

Free and confidential: advice, guidance and support

Outline planning application submitted for new Redcatch Quarter

An application seeking outline planning permission for the new £150m Redcatch Quarter has been submitted to Bristol City Council.

This would see the current 1970s Broadwalk Shopping Centre demolished and redeveloped with around 800 new homes, shops and a neighbourhood cinema.

The new development would also include a library, community café and restaurant overlooking the park, as well as essential services such as a supermarket, dentist and pharmacy.

Following residents' fears of the park being overwhelmed, one amendment has been to change the single block of development into three finger blocks of apartments.

Residents chance to comment on plans for £8.4m Youth Zone

Residents have another chance to comment on plans for a £8.4m Youth Zone to be built in Knowle West – which have been submitted to Bristol City Council.

The application is from OnSide which is collaborating on the project with Bristol City Council and local youth charity Youth Moves.

The proposed site for the new South Bristol Youth Zone would cover around 8.11 hectares of green space at the back of Inns Court, close to the roundabout at the junction of Hartcliffe Way and Hengrove Way.

Project manager Francis Hilton from the Redcatch Development Partnership said: “Making the Outline Application is just a point on the journey and we look forward to continuing to work with the community post-submission to contribute to the revitalisation of South Bristol.”

Members of the Friends of Redcatch Park, Sian Ellis-Thomas and Lesley Powell, are acting as “the voice of the park and its users” in dialogue with the developers.

They are currently conducting a survey of park users to find out their “concerns and aspirations”

In a letter to residents, Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees and Deputy Mayor Asher Craig, responding to their concerns, said the site had been chosen because it “sits on the boundaries of four South Bristol wards" – making it a “neutral, accessible and welcome location for all surrounding communities.”

The Youth Zone would give young people aged eight to 19 (and up to 25 for those with a disability) access to sports, arts

Plans submitted for Old Cinema site

Plans were submitted to the council in July for 30 new homes and commercial space on Filwood Broadway – including the site of the former cinema which closed in 1994.

The proposal by Bristol City Council is for all the homes to be a mix of social, affordable or intermediate rent.

Filwood Broadway Working Group update

reCREATE Filwood Workshop

Filwood Broadway Working Group (FBWG) co-hosted this workshop for local residents on July 23 together with Bristol City Council.

It was a really good day when we started to think in more detail about how to improve the high street. Some key points of agreement were:

Close off the west side of Filwood Broadway for pedestrian use.

Close Barnstaple Road in front of the Community Centre.

Keep parking spaces along the road.

See if it's possible to alter the road design to reduce speeding.

No need for a segregated cycle route.

Lots of trees and other greenery.

Design a focal point at each end to catch the eye.

The junction with Creswicke Road needs major work.

For the next steps, see the advert below.

Better Collaboration Meeting

The Council's Community Development Team recognised the frustration of local residents with lack of real co-operation from the council over the housing development plans - and arranged a meeting on July 7 for all local residents to express their views on what is needed to improve this situation.

A very good attendance led to vigorous contributions. Council officers took note of these and will propose ways to improve collaboration for future work.

Cinema Site Plans

The planning application for this site was submitted at the end of July - and the documents showed virtually no change from the plans presented in the January consultation.

It is expected the plans will be examined by councillors in the

Planning Committee during the autumn.

The regular fortnightly meetings were paused for the summer. If you are interested in being involved and are not already on the FBWG mailing list, send an email to filwood21@aol.com

Tribute to vicar with a “passion for social justice”

The community has paid tribute to a former Knowle West vicar who made his mark serving the area for ten years and had a passion for social justice.

Alister Palmer was vicar of St Barnabas and Holy Cross Churches and also Chair of Trustees for five years at The Mede Community and Learning Centre –which he saw re-named as the Inns Court Centre.

He retired in 2013, saying in an interview with The Knowledge that

High Sheriff Award for Paul Coyne

Youth worker and Knowle Wester Paul Coyne has been honoured with the prestigious High Sheriff’s Award.

He received the accolade at the Bristol Young Heroes Awards this summer for over 20 years work helping to improve the lives of young people in South Bristol.

Paul, who works for local charity Youth Moves based at The Park was nominated by the Youth Opinions group who themselves won the Team Award (see p 22).

his time in the area had been “a fantastic experience and a great place to end one’s work and ministry.”

As a former Chair of the Regeneration Planning Group, Alister worked on the 2012 Regeneration Framework and always said he felt it important for "the community to be heard.” He cited one of his highlights as helping to save The Mede and a large number of homes in the Inns Court area from demolition as part of the council’s regeneration plan in 2010.

And he saw his dream fulfilled at the launch of the new Inns Court Centre in 2013 with the day nursery and a refurbished café.

Alister also helped to set up a food store at Marshall Walk, run by the Inns Court Centre in partnership with the Matthew Tree Project and local churches to help fight food poverty in Knowle West.

Chair of the Inns Court Community and Family Centre and Senior Pastor at the Inns Court Christian Fellowship, the Rev Bernard Morris, says: “He was a man of vision, a dedicated vicar and a hardworking advocate for social justice…”

A celebration of Alister’s life is taking place on Thursday September 29, with a service at St Barnabas at 11.30am, followed by burial at South Bristol Crematorium at 1pm and lunch at the church at 2pm.

He says: “I stood on stage and said, ‘You can’t be anybody without the people around you.’ I don’t do pomp and ceremony stuff usually, but it was really emotional for me…”

Youth Moves CEO Ali Dale said Paul had been “an absolute legend to work with” and really deserved the recognition from the city and the High Sheriff.

He said: “Paul is one of those people who every community and team needs. He is always happy to do more if it is improving the lives of young people,

Queen Elizabeth

Knowle West residents and organisations have been paying tribute following the announcement of the death of Her Majesty the Queen on September 8 at the age of 96.

Queen Elizabeth II was Britain’s longest serving monarch after 70 years on the throne and visited Bristol several times during her reign.

Early visits in the 70s and 80s have been recorded by Evening Post photographer and former resident, the late George Gallop.

The day The Queen came to The Park

February 25, 2005 was a very important day for The Park - it was the end of a very busy year leading to a visit from Her Majesty The Queen.

The Queen showed a real interest in everything she saw - but showed a particular interest in the young people attending The Park education.

All the disbelievers were really choked to see her and spoke freely about the reasons they were attending The Park and what they wanted to do from there.

The whole staff were involved on the day which was really nice for us all.

There was a real air of excitement on the morning of the visit, the whole place was filled with police and plain clothes officers. Final touches were put in place for the big arrival.

The young people we worked with at the time were all convinced that we were making it up and “ no way was The Queen coming here” and they all went off to their classes with their minds made up.

Her Majesty arrived at 10am and we started what should have been a one-hour visit, that lasted two hours.

Her Majesty sat and watched a dance performance and a short performance by the BPAC Drama Group before entering the back courtyard - where the whole of Connaught School was waiting for her, complete with flags and banners.

After signing a visitors’ book, we then proceeded to the café area where she met and spoke to many of our tenants at the time and also members of the local community.

After we had a few words, we shook hands and she was escorted by the police to see the crowds that had gathered in the carpark.

On a personal note, this day will stay with me for the rest of my life. She was a very lovely lady and very easy to talk to. I was very proud to have been an integral part of the day.

RIP Your Majesty from The Park Centre.

Matthew Tree Project launching new support programme from October

A local crisis support charity which had to temporarily pause its operations in May due to funding issues will be launching a new enhanced programme from October.

The Matthew Tree Project (TMTP) based on Filwood Broadway has been running in Knowle West since 2013.

Before the temporary closure, the charity was providing essential crisis support to some 600 vulnerable people and distributing the food equivalent of around 9,000 meals city-wide each week.

Cuts to bus services

From Sunday October 9 First Bus will be making a number of cuts to services across the Bristol area.

The company blames “changing post-pandemic demand” which has seen passenger numbers fall by 25 per cent compared to preCOVID figures - and “acute driver shortages in the region”.

On September 2 Bristol Community Transport (BCT) also ceased operations – ending its lifeline services for the elderly and vulnerable, including Dial-a-Ride and group minibus services.

HCT Chief Executive Lynn McClelland blamed the closure on rising fuel prices and a difficult trading period due to lockdown and Covid-19.

Jubilee Pool saved but needs funding

Knowle’s Jubilee Pool is due to become the first in Bristol to be community-owned and managed on September 30.

The volunteer-run Friends of Jubilee Pool (FoJP) was set up to save the facility after it was

Since July it has been able to help existing clients – but from October hopes to have the resources to take on new referrals as well.

The new Rebuilding Lives Plus programme includes a Citizens' Voice Group made of current and ex-clients, who will be able to make decisions on how the service support is delivered.

The charity will also be providing professional counselling for the first time.

Other ‘enhanced’ elements, which will be introduced as funding is secured, include welfare and housing advice, financial wellbeing and life skills training as well as job search and application support.

The M1 metrobus which travels from Hengrove to Cribbs Causeway and serves Knowle West was taken over from BCT by First on Monday September 5.

BCT also ceased operation of 11 other bus routes in the Bristol area. Routes affected are the 53, 54, 55, 62, 505, 506, 511, 512, 515 and 516.

But the 52 which connects South Bristol to the city centre was restarted 10 days later, after Transpora Group took it over.

CEO and founder of TMTP, Mark Goodway says: “In essence Rebuilding Lives Plus is an enhancement of the work the charity has been delivering since 2010.

“The programme will focus more time and expertise into helping people address the underlying causes of crisis and removing the barriers that are preventing people rebuilding a healthier, wealthier, happier future.”

Knowle West has its own community transport based at Inns Court Community and Family Centre.

Manager of The Sprint Community Transport, Angela Perrett, said she wanted to reassure members the service was still running and not affected by the closure of BCT.

“If you live in or are a group in our area, please contact us, we are doing our best to help in the immediate future, whilst we investigate the prospect of helping long term…”

earmarked for closure by Bristol City Council.

But although it has been saved - rising energy prices have led to a plea for new support with FoJP looking to raise up to £30,000 by the end of December.

There are also sweet and popcorn carts for party hire as well as large sale boards which can be personalised for each event.

She says: “I’m looking forward to meeting the locals and helping them out with their events.”

Tribute to Zac who was “caring and kind”

The Knowle West community has been shocked at the tragic loss of local resident 24-year-old Zac Betty who was hit by a car when walking to work in July.

Local people rallied round to raise money to help the family pay for his funeral – with a fundraiser held at Novers Park Community and Social Club.

Zac’s father Martin said the family would like to thank the community for all their support and kind wishes.

He said of his son: “He was so caring and kind and always thought of others. He would spend his last penny on any of us if he thought we wanted something.

“He was so young, there’s not much of his life lived; he had just started to

Fundraiser for couple who lost everything in house fire

A Knowle West couple who lost everything when a fire devastated their home in August have been overwhelmed by the kindness of the community.

John and Kath Elvins, who are in their 70s, managed to escape from their house in Downton Road with their two dogs when flames engulfed the building after an electrical fault. The blaze was so large, smoke could be seen miles away in the centre of Bristol.

A fundraiser took place at Novers Park Community and Social Club on

find himself. It is devastating…”

Zac who was the oldest of five had two brothers and two sisters and was father to a three-yearold son whom he worked hard to support.

He had been on his way to Tescos in Brislington, where he worked the night shift from 10pm to 6.30am, when the car hit him as he was walking along the pavement on Airport Road.

Martin said: “Staff are all devastated, they weren’t told until the following night. They have a book down there with messages from his work colleagues.”

Zac – who was a Chelsea fan as well as supporting Bristol City – had been about to go on holiday doing football stadium tours.

In a statement the family said: “Our loving, caring and selfless son, brother, uncle and daddy – we are absolutely heartbroken.

Sunday September 11, as the couple left the house with just a change of clothes.

John who has had a series of health issues including a triple heart bypass last year, says they are lucky to be alive. He describes it like a missile hitting the house – and says everything went up within 15 minutes.

He says: “…The whole building is smoke damaged apart from the bit above the garage. There’s now no water, electricity or gas as they had to cut it off…”

The couple did not have contents insurance and were just covered for the building which will cost around £180,000 to rebuild in around six to 12 months.

The pair are now living with relatives and say they are so grateful for all the community support.

John says: “The amount of kindness shown and the

"You were an amazing person to have around and you’ve made a massive impact. There is a deep hole now in our heart. We all will love you forever and more.”

Zac’s funeral took place on August 17 at South Bristol Crematorium with a wake afterwards at Eagle House Community Centre.

Claire John who organised the fundraiser said: “The support

from everyone was absolutely amazing from start to finish in such a short time …”

amount of neighbours that came to help… I would like to thank people from the bottom of my heart…”

Claire John organised the fundraiser at Novers Club with friends Becky Oaten and Amie Caswell. She has known the couple most of her life as they are her parents’ best friends.

She says: “…We are all heartbroken for Kath and John, so the only way I can help is do what we do best and do a fundraiser as they have lost everything…"

A popular local allotment has been saved for the community – after Knowle West Alliance was successful in its bid to run it.

As reported in the last Knowledge, the Alliance recently approached Bristol City Council to look after Let’s Grow Community Allotmentpreviously run for 10 years by Knowle West Health Association (KWHA).

The 1.3 acre site on Springfield Allotments was returned to the council at the end of 2021 when KWHA faced funding challenges.

Following the news - lead partner and local charity re:work is now in the process of making the site safe and accessible for the public.

Alliance Coordinator Lucy Holburn said: “It’s great to see so many green spaces being cared for in the area, so much hard work is

Provided by Zoe Probert from Boing! Inns Court

Ingredients:

Half of a white cabbage, thinly sliced

2 medium carrots, grated

1 small onion, diced

2 heaped tablespoons mayonnaise

1 generous sprinkle of black pepper

We serve this in our café and it goes down like a treat! It’s a side to our jacket potatoes and toasties and is devoured by everyone!!

The crunchiness and freshness of it being made in-house makes a massive difference to the bland shop-bought stuff.

It actually works out super cheap and we think it’s even more delicious after a day or two of being sat in the fridge. The crunch remains but the fresh veg juices are stronger!!

Primary school swimming lessons saved for a year

Pupils at Parson Street Primary School can continue with their swimming lessons this term – after a generous donor stepped in to help fund them.

The school manages to pay for the upkeep of its pool by hiring it out to community groups and other schools. Currently only two year groups (Years 1 and 3) have been able to have lessons due to rising costs.

But this summer it looked as though these too would have to be cut – so staff put out an appeal.

Thanks to funding from Bristol-based global marketing company Webgains – the school has now been able to hire a swimming coach.

Parson Street Primary School PE Lead Erica Tindall who has worked at the school for 17 years said: “The sponsorship will pay for a swim coach for a year. We are hugely grateful as our children wouldn’t be able to swim if it hadn’t been for that funding…”

Webgains CEO Richard Dennys said: “We’re just delighted to be in the fortunate position to be able to help Erica and Parson Street team maintain the swimming lessons…”

To all parents and carers of 0-5 year olds…

First young people to win Team Award come from Youth Moves

It was another wonderful night for Youth Moves at the annual Bristol Young Heroes awards this year.

The event which celebrates the success and resilience of young people in the city took place on 15 July at Bristol Harbour Hotel.

We came away with two big winners on the night, including the Team Award for our Youth Opinions group - which amazingly was the first ever won by young people.

So when they were announced as winners, it was somewhat a shock and a truly special moment.

What started out as a small group to represent the voice of young people on the estates of South Bristol has gone from strength to strength.

come away with the award.

Dee said: “It felt surreal to be a part of it and it honestly felt amazing to go up on stage and get the award.”

And Macy said: “It felt like all of our hard work was worth it!..”

Today they liaise with local politicians on policy, offer consultancy advise on youth violence across the region, and even distribute funding and grants to other young people and community groups across the area. They are truly making a real contribution and impact across the city.

Members were really happy and proud of themselves to

Putting youth voice at the front and centre of all we do is central to Youth Moves - so to win this was a real recognition of that, and something we look to strengthen and build on as we move forward. 363 4969
