Welcome to the South Texas Heritage Sale.

We are proud to present our fifth offering of Santa Gertrudis and Star5 females. Once again, we are offering a large selection of high-quality cattle – donor quality heifers bred to some of the breed’s most exciting performance sires, powerful pairs and 3N1’s, and open heifers with some of the breed’s most progressive genetics, as well as Heritage bloodlines from some of the most renown herds in the breed. In addition, there is a broad selection of Star5 heifers that offer all the benefits of hybrid vigor that these crossbred females bring to the table.

Our sale has come full circle as we have offspring consigned this year from females purchased at previous years’ South Texas Heritage sales, and you will find that these offspring provide genetics that will fit in the most progressive herds in the Santa Gertrudis breed.

The cattle will be available to view on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Be sure to join us Friday evening at Harrison’s Landing for a Dutch treat dinner. On Saturday join us for lunch and stay to watch the Hot Gert Open Show. The Hot Gert Junior Show will take place on Sunday morning, and all Santa Gertrudis juniors are welcome to participate.

Data Definitions

SGBI Expected Progeny Differences Expected Progeny Differences, EPDs, are the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the SGBI database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) for each trait being evaluated and are calculated utilizing pedigree and performance information. SGBI is a leader in the adoption and implementation of cutting-edge genetic technology. In 2013, SGBI released the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (DNA verified) for Bos indicus-influenced cattle. The inclusion of DNA into the breed’s EPD calculations (GE-EPDs) has resulted in information that is more accurate and predicable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone. Currently, the association’s database contains more than 8,000 performance verifying DNA samples. In addition, to being the first Bos indicus-influenced breed to offer GE-EPDs, SGBI was the first beef breed to implement single-step methodology for the incorporation of genetic information into the genetic evaluation. This approach maximizes use of data reported on all animals throughout the pedigree and greatly improves the EPD accuracy.

SGBI Indices SGBI offers two selection indices for commercial cattleman use.

Indices are multi-trait selection tools designed to assist commercial producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. Indices provide an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and the calves were exposed to the same environment. SGBI’s indices provide performance insight to producers marketing yearlings by the pound ($ Growth) or retaining ownership through the feedyard (Carcass Rank).

$ Growth Index - The growth index puts together weaning weight and yearling weight. Since WW is contained in YW, post-wean gain (PWG) is used in the index to prevent double counting WW. As an example of the index, if an animal has a +30-growth index, its offspring will be on average worth $30 more as a yearling than the breed average, based strictly on weight. Please note, the $ Growth index puts zero economic weight on maternal traits and utilizing the index as a replacement female selection tool might result in larger mature weight cows.

Carcass Rank - The carcass rank index contains marbling score, hot carcass weight, ribeye area, backfat and tenderness, and is weighted by the economics of carcass values. It is expressed as a numerical ranking within the breed from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest. For example, an animal with a score of 9 would be in the 80th percentile or would be better than 80% of the population in carcass composition. A ranking of 6 would place the animal in the 50th percentile. Carcass Rank Index places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. Utilizing Carcass Rank as a seedstock selection tool might result in increased growth while negatively impacting marbling. Seedstock producers focused on improved carcass quality are encouraged to utilize SGBI’s Marbling EPD in the decision-making process. Breeding cattle with higher marbling EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades.
