Changes and adjustments, we’ve all had to make them. We’ve all had to somehow figure out new ways to do things, whether in our everyday lives or in our cattle operations. However, cattle people are resilient, cattle people are tough, and cattle people know how to survive. So here we are, weathering storms, drought, cattle prices, and overcoming the challenges we face every day.

I thank each and every one of you, our Santa Gertrudis family, for doing just that and being here to celebrate another year of the South Texas Heritage Sale.

This year’s sale offers another set of tremendous, functional Santa Gertrudis and Star 5 Santa Gertrudis females. The sale committee thanks everyone, from consignor, buyer, auctioneer to ring man, and everyone in between.

Our sale committee has been busy producing what we feel is a sale we can all be proud of. We know that there are many sales for you to choose from when making your cattle purchases. Our prayer is that the cattle we offer will bring production and improvement to the herd you introduce them to. When this sale started, our goal was to offer good, sound, functional cattle, and in the 9 years since we began, we feel we continue to bring that to the table. Some folks have gone from buyer to seller, which has been our goal from the beginning - to come full circle, trusting in our sale and selling offspring from cattle purchased right here.

SGBI Expected Progeny Differences

Expected Progeny Differences, EPDs, are the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the SGBI database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) for each trait being evaluated and are calculated utilizing pedigree and performance information. SGBI is a leader in the adoption and implementation of cutting-edge genetic technology. In 2013, SGBI released the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (DNA verified) for Bos indicus-influenced cattle. The inclusion of DNA into the breed’s EPD calculations (GEEPDs) has resulted in information that is more accurate and predicable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone. Currently, the association’s database contains more than 8,000 performance verifying DNA samples. In addition, to being the first Bos indicus-influenced breed to offer GEEPDs, SGBI was the first beef breed to implement single-step methodology for the incorporation of genetic information into the genetic evaluation. This approach maximizes use of data reported on all animals throughout the pedigree and greatly improves the EPD accuracy.

SGBI Indices

Due to the amount of performance data submitted over the last 5- year period, the SGBI Board of Directors approved a recalibration of the breed’s genetic evaluation and the development of new selection indices to replace the association’s original selection indices. The Performance Committee ratified the recalibration and indices in 2021. As expected, there was some movement, however, the recalibrated information presents a more accurate picture of an animal’s genetic merit.

SGBI Balanced Index: This index assumes that producers are keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It further assumes that producers are either 1) marketing carcasses on the grid or 2) that buyers of their feeder calves base pricing on feedlot and carcass performance.

SGBI Cow/Calf Index: This index assumes that producers are keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. However, it assumes all calves are marketed at weaning or soon thereafter. It further assumes that feeder calf buyers don’t base decisions on feedlot or carcass performance, making these traits less relevant to profitability.

SGBI Terminal Index: This index assumes that producers are not keeping replacement heifers from the bulls they purchase. It assumes that producers are marketing carcasses on the grid, making carcass traits relevant to their business.

Selection indices will be reported as a percentile ranking (top 1% - bottom 99%) and will replace $ Growth and Carcass Rank, on pedigrees.

Terms and Conditions

Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or check, payable at sale location.

Herd Health: If not from accredited herds, heifers will have brucellosis vaccination or clean test.

Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as sold. Animals will be care for at the purchaser’s risk for reasonable length of time.

Breeder’s Guarantee: No guarantee is given that a pregnant female will deliver a live calf or that she will carry a calf full term. Bulls sell with satisfactory semen test within 30 days of sale.

Two half sisters out of the Cactus King bull that when scanned by Donnie Robertson was the largest rib eye bull he had ever scanned at 16.5 plus inches. Females are both dark cherry red, standing on good set of feet and legs, and easy fleshing. GENTLE. Bred to calve out of Red Angus bulls to produce American Red Calves from late February to early March.

This heifer's balanced EPDs and top phenotype are a combination we are proud to offer. Korban Cattle 324 is a open heifer out of KR 395/18 Trifecta. She is top 2% BW, 15% REA, and 40% Marb. She is a unique combination of Double G Farms and The King Ranch breed up program. 324's dam holds a very special place in our operation since she was one of our first purchases as an operation, and even more since she was purchased here in the Heritage Sale! This female is a RA Brown WFC Bourne daughter, she is also the maternal sister to Lazy L’s Fancy who was purchased by the Sanchez family in the 2020 South Texas Heritage Sale. Hazel is a real show stopper with her deep bodied, level hip and beautiful extension in her front end. She is currently on our show circuit, and will be shown at the Tulsa State Fair, Louisiana state fair and will also be entered in the Open Star 5 Hot gert show held at the conclusion of the sale. She has just recently won Reserve Champion ARB female at the Four States Fair in Texarkana. If you want one that’s going to make a super brood cow and produce profit then this one is for you. Marla’s sire is RED DOC 9515 “JL” that was purchased in the 2021 Red Doc Bull sale. “JL” is a KR 189/11 son and out of one of the best donor cows in the breed SR 90/4. Her dam is one of our best Maine Angus cross cows. Marla is a big top female with a beautiful extension in her front 1/3. This heifer will mature in her time, she is a easy feeder and will make a great show prospect for any Jr exhibitor. She is halter broke and ready to go.
