Welcome to the 11th issue of BAYFashion Magazine! BAYFashion has matured and we no longer have to introduce ourselves as anything but ‘BAYFashion Magazine’, no lengthy explanations are needed, nor is it necessary to tell anyone what the magazine is about. It has been just over a year since we started the magazine and we have come a long way and the credit for that goes to the amazing artists, models, designers and fashion event producers that have been kind enough to work with us, grace our pages with their presence, contribute their valuable time and invite us to cover their exclusive events. We want to thank you all. We have a large readership base now and we are the only magazine from the Bay Area to be featured next to top National magazines on Issuu.com and HP’s Magcloud.com.

Focusing on ‘The Technology of Comfort’

Donald J Pliner is one of the very few American designers who are still an independent brand. His designs are striking, comfortable and affordable while still being Hi-Fashion and current. Donald was visiting the Bay Area and taking part in the Santana Row Fall Fashion Event for 2011 where we caught up with him to talk about the future of Donald J. Pliner the brand and the Man... BF: Donald, you are one of the few original Iconic American Designers left as an independent label; what is your vision for the future for your brand and where are you taking it? DP: I just sold the company but I will have a major part for the next five years and the

idea is to expand the company into an international brand, have a lot more stores, a little more diversity in the Donald Pliner product. We have Donald Pliner Mens and we are coming up with Donald, which is a little young and a little less expensive. We are also coming up with a DJP which is a ladies line. My wife recently did her collection for DP which all have green sole. Green sole represents life. love and vitality.

BF: So there is your inspiration, tell us more about her? DP: The first time I met her on a blind date, I fell in love with her green eyes, that’s why

the green sole. We have a 7 year old, so everything she does has some sort of comfort factor build into it. During the day she will chase after our daughter and at night she will go out and dance like no one else. She is at the moment in Vegas with her girlfriends. We live in Miami but we also have a home in New York.

BF: What is your design methodology, is Donald Pliner a team of designers or just you and your wife? DP: So far most of the designs were mine. I would be doing 70 to 80% of the designs but recently I have hired 3 young designers, one that works with Lisa and two for myself. This gives me a little bit more freedom. We are about to launch Donald J. Pliner Signature collection in February which will be all my designs for both Men and Women at a higher price range. This is something I have always wanted to do. The Signature line will be from $375 upwards.

INTERVIEW BF: What is the guiding principle behind your brand and your designs? DP: The key to Donald Pliner, is the fashion is technology of comfort. You can pick up a Gucci or Dolce product and you will see that the materials are almost same but mine is always about the Technology y of Comfort but at about $200 to $500 less than those brands. The value of my shoes are, that at this price level there are no other shoes that look this good and have this level of comfort.

BF: Give us a short history graph on how you got to where you are today? DP: I opened my first retail store in Beverly Hills in 1967, at that time I had a whole range of items for Men and Women. I sold my business to an investment group and now I have the opportunity to become like a Ralph Lauren or Giorgio Armani as I can now really get the brand out there. I have been up and down three times to a bare bones existence and I started this current brand 21 years ago. I was in a good position, had a 3500 sq. ft. home in Miami at that time but I got to a point where I was spending more than I was making. I sold the apartment, move to NY City and got a studio there, started the company on credit cards and was in a huge hole when Nordstroms came to me and said that they would give me a free ad in Vogue. 5 years I literally lived of credit cards but I turned it around and all of a sudden it started to emerge. From a studio I transformed into being able to afford the most beautiful residences in New York with 360 째 views and finally I could afford a Showroom in New York. The one that I have for 15 years now is on 5th Avenue between 57th and 58th st.

BF: Why did you pick Santana Row for your Bay Area store? DP: I love this area, I love this store and its ambience. We did want to do San Francisco but it ended up here but when I saw this place I just loved it. More stores coming soon in London, Paris and Milan. We do want to also go to Moscow and the Middle East.

BF: So where is Donald J Pliner made? DP: The shoes are designed and produced in the USA but we do

import parts and certain pieces are made abroad. One of my most prolific suppliers is from India. the beaded uppers you saw on some of the womens lines are made in India. I found India to have consistent great quality and amazing customer service. I have been to India many times and I will be there again in a few months. My wifes spring collection is completely based off of India and inspired from there.

BF: So it seems like Donald J Pliner is about to take off for the next level? DP: Yes we are ready to move to the next level and I am also hoping

that with this new organization I will be able to spend more time with my daughter and spend time on desiging my favorite creations and less time running the business. We are moving back to California as a family soon from Miami though I will be keeping my homes in Miami and New York for the foreseeable future.

BF:Donald, thank you for taking the time to talk to BAYFashion. We

Samuel R. Parkinson was born in Durango Co. in 1986 and rolled down the Rockies to Eureka when he was 4 months old. Around 1990 his family moved to Sacramento where he was raised and learned. Always into style and creating his own he would reconstruct Nikes and random jackets. He elevated in a creative environment with his sister always creating artistic works, his mother who often had her foot on an old Singers pedal and his pops who does boat canvas by trade and can build anything. For high school he did his senior project on screen printing which opened his eyes to other ways of crafting. In 2008 he started to further his education at International Academy of Design and Technology Sacramento for his BFA in fashion design and marketing and will be graduating by this year’s end. He started KingsTribe Clothing in late 2007 as a t-shirt company and now has evolved it into a company with a very wide range. His inspiration is that perfect mixture of mother nature and the concrete cities. KingsTribe Clothing represents a time of barter, belief of change and the strength of a united community. The name KingsTribe comes from the philosophy that “we are a tribe of kings”. The demographic of KingsTribe is in metropolitan areas where the revolutionary individual is heading anywhere from their job to a college class or the late night spot. Along with style, comfort is an important factor in the making of each design. Every piece is all original and extremely exclusive for the one buyer who obtains. As a designer Samuel is always looking for his niche which is why he designs everything from men’s and women’s street wear to accessories such as hold all bags, backpacks, duffle bags, the hoodie scarf’s and KingsTribe’s screen printed tees (all done by hand). In the immediate future he plans to create a line for the countries boutiques and keep an exclusive line for the more one of a kind customer which is appointment only. In ten years he plans to be international, inspiring the world with his creativity.

She is an integral part of the SF Hi Society circles with her exclusive parties for the Bohemian Socials where fashion for the night is strictly enforced and we thought that she will be an amazing fashionista to interview for our new column ‘Social Lights’ in which we will be bringing the likes and the fashion of San Francisco’s Elite to our readers.

KU: Anjelika, could you let us know a little about yourself,

your background and how you got started with Bohemian Socials? : I am originally from Russia, but I live in SF for the last 14 years and consider myself local by now. I always had a passion for Arts and Culture and had intentions to be more involved in this field. That explains why I founded Bohemian Socials back in 2009 with strong concept - to support and help developing arts in our city. My Fundraiser “Bohemian Socials for the Opera” in 2009 leaded me to get involved with SF Opera Bravo Club Board of Directors where I was assigned to prestigious position to a Gala Co-Chair for Opera Opening Night in 2010.

KU: Anjelika, tell us a little about your personal style , what inspires your looks? AK: As my Image Consultant Olga Kamova says:

“Style is not just what is in your wardrobe or how you wear your hair. Style is a combination of all your beliefs, thoughts, experiences and emotions that are on display for the world to revel in.” I usually get inspired by the latest Fashion trends,styles, designers and also by some of my fashionable friends like Sonya Molodetskaya, Olga Kamova, Martina Culjak.

KU: On an age old question, but something really important to our readers... When you go looking for new styles, which stores/ brands do you go to? : I like European Brands - H&M, Zara, Mango, Cop Coppin.

KU: San Francisco has a vibrant fashion design base and there

are many very talented designers here. Do you ever buy anything for your wardrobe from local designers? : The only wardrobe piece I have from local designers - is my Opera Gala Gown designed by talented Giancarlo Vega.

AK

KU: We would like to connect San Francisco designers to connoisseurs of fashion like you, so that San Franciscans can wear ‘Made in SF’ clothes and help our emerging designers. What advice do yo have for us and our designers to achieve this? : My advice would be to get more exposure thru social media and feature them on BAYFashion Magazine. I read the magazine and my friends read it too. So we will learn about this designers from your Magazine I hope, and maybe buy their stuff.

perimenting with the art of the masses, with the second nature that has already been processed by somebody else. Magazine graphics is the basis of my aesthetics. I steal faces, usually from fashion magazines, adopt them to myself – and through a strange metamorphosis my paintings are born. “Most important in the works of Yuri Shiller is the unity of natural energy and intellect. Naturally his art is erotic, but he is not ashamed of his work. Shiller’s art is the art of a victor in a solitary war, like a military leader who has just seized a fortress. In this victory, however, there is no male chauvinism, nor a trace of any “battle between the sexes”. Man is not at war with woman but, rather, we see an artist battling reality. Victory is essential for only one reason, the creation of a simple and impassioned work of art. In order to become the woman in the model, to fully understand her, one must overcome all resistance and shed all extraneous emotion. All of Shiller’s models are individuals. Each one, however, ceases to be herself after ht artist dismantles her piece by piece and then, puts her together all over again. The artist, furthermore, reassembles her, so that the figure of the young woman lay as confined as possible on the plane of the canvas. In this manner, her flesh does not lose contact with the background and, the lines of her hair, hips, and arms perfectly rhyme with the lines surrounding her. The bodies of the models submit to geometric rhythm, as if the artist pulls their skin into the same rigid frame. The cross of the collarbone, the roundness of the breasts, the dynamics of the piercing eyes, lips and, the crucle jewelry – the outline is simple but, the variations are innumerable. The more woman on the canvas, the more difficult the task and, the greater the victory. As these women become the “corps de ballet”, they become subordinate to the merciless ballet master, who has produced t he female ballet of the turn of the century. Mikhail Trofimenkov

In the sea of catchy, kitschy names of modeling groups who work events, make appearances and fundraise in Northern California, this is the one you should pull out of the murky brine of Facebook friends and cling to. In a little over six months, these women have flipped the status quo of *cough* “industry” expectations. A group of beautiful women that actually get along even when the camera isn’t pointed their direction? Do I have your attention now? Thought so. Founded in the early spring of 2011, this modeling group has something that most groups don’t. A purpose. Serving not only as a fundraising platform, a pseudo-agency, and an endorsement/promotional team, this group puts the power back in the hands of the models. Not only does each model have access to the knowledge and experiences of the other models, which seems to be especially helpful when deciding to work with a particular client or photographer, but the Jayded Bombshells build success as a team, which was one of the main objectives of founder, Heather Doss. “I had never found a supportive group of women that I could surround myself with that were not constantly gossiping about others or trying to tear one another down. I felt disappointed that there was not a sense of camaraderie within an industry that I was so intensely involved in. I decided that I wanted to start a group that was solely based around uplifting one another and inspiring others. A place where models of all shapes and sizes could share their modeling experiences, build their fan base, and inspire newer models to do the same.” That’s not to say there is no semblance of competition. Most of the Jayded Bombshells work in the same area code and vie for many of the same positions. However, there-in lies the beauty. Cortney Martinez is one of the original Jayded Bombshells, or “JB’s”, and she views this connectivity in a seemingly counter-intuitive positive light. “Being a Bombshell has helped with making connections. I’m meeting people I probably wouldn’t have met otherwise. It’s not just me getting my face out there, it’s all the ladies helping me and I do the same for them. We are our own agency. If I see a casting that I don’t fit, but another girl does, I pass it along. Even if I do fit, I still pass along the information.” Of course, the Jayded Bombshells know how to have a good time as well. Because the ladies are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting a bombshell these femme fatales make sure any event they’re hosting is a sublime experience for all involved, focusing on showcasing the product or endorsing the talent while walking the fine line between getting down and getting sloppy. Although JB’s can be found all across the US and in Canada, most events have been in the Sacramento area. This is changing rapidly as the group continues to grow and evolve. One JB and designer of the JB website, Victoria Gunn, offered some enlightenment and intrigue. “We focus our energy on creating and hosting events where there is the greatest grouping of fans and Jayded Bombshells in order to make fundraising for our various causes more effective. A great strength of our group is the incredible networking capabilities of our girls, so we have contacts in multiple arenas almost everywhere. Stay tuned for more on that by following our fan page or subscribing to our website. One of the great things about being a Jayded Bombshell is the fact that we are located all over, not only California, but the greater part of the US and even in Canada. As we grow as a group, we will expand our events to our satellite locations. In fact, we have some exciting events coming up in the Bay Area.” It appears the Jayded Bombshells are branching out to conquer San Francisco in a massive event at Fuel on October 22nd with Meikee Magnetic. I can honestly say I look forward to having my Facebook feed full of photos from that event. Matching costumes? Meikee Magnetic? My head reels with anticipation. The evening started with a Red Carpet meet and greet with celebrities and artists in the VIP chambers at the Orpheum. Artists like Far East Movement and celebrities like designer Tracy Reese, and former top model Kathy Ireland all turned up and posed for the press.

MACY’S Glamorama 2011 San Francisco - lit up the citys downtown Orpheum theatre on the 30th of Sept. 2011. In typical MACY’S Passport style, the show boasted an unparalleled lineup of designers and artists to entertain the houseful audience. The Finale with Grammy winner Bruno Mars was the crowning glory of the evening.

The show opened with a enchanting dance routine by skil ed ballet performers moving like swans on a stage lit like water and flooded with light. The Fashion show started with Tommy Hilfiger’s womens line Tommy Girl and continued with Macy’s Impulse and Armani Jeans. The stage was then taken over by a troupe of young dancers who stole the audience’s heart with an amazing performance of romantic, hip-hop and modern dance fusion number with dancers of all ages performing in unison. The audience was on its feet cheering for the tiny stars who totally stole the thunder from their older counterparts. Far East Movement took over the Orpheum for the next 20 minutes rendering their hit songs “Rocketeer” and the Biilboard topping “Like a G6’. This Asian-American band holds the distinction of being the first of its kind to top nations single charts. They continued their music as a backdrop for BAR III and the models had the privilege of strutting around the stage with a live band of this stature playing for them. Kathy Ireland took the stage and the atmosphere became somber as she remembered Dame Elizabeth Taylor who was one of the biggest supporters of the fight against HIV AIDS in the country and is also the founding chairperson for MACY’S Passport. The grandchildren of Elizabeth made an appearance on stage and accepted a token of appreciation for their late grandmother from MACY’S. The rest of the fashion was a blur of Haute Couture and beautiful people til a band of underwear clad supermales started running around the stage for “Papi’ bringing every woman in the audience to their feet and screaming at the top of their lungs. Bruno Mars took the stage to a screaming crowd and performed three numbers “Grenade,” “Runaway Baby,” and “Just the Way You Are”, asking the audience to sing along to the last number and leaving us wanting a lot more from this amazing talent. The show was followed up by a lavish after party at the Asian Arts museum where VIP guests, models and artists mingled and BAYFashion was there to cover it all for you. 41

SANTANA ROW FALL FASHION 2011 SSouthantanaBayRandowthe- TheHauteRodeoCouture Drive of San Jose, the Fashion Destination of the Island between SF and LA is going through

a resurgence. With the opening of the Tesla Showroom and a host of new designer brands opening shop, the ‘Row’ is brighter than ever before. Every Fall Santana Row management puts together a fashion show with a proper runway and professional models to showcase the latest Fall collections of the ‘Row’. The event is managed by Federal Realty Group which manages the ‘Row’ and is helmed by ollette avarrette the Marketing Manager for the ‘Row’.

BAYFashion happened to stumble upon this event uninvited as two of our

editors were engaged in their favorite pastime of shopping at dining at the ‘Row’ on a fine afternoon on the 10th of September 2011. When we went up to Collette at the check in desk, we were accorded a warm welcome by her and the team and were ushered in to pretty good seats with a nice view of the elevated runway. To our surprise this show exceeded our expectations by a huge amount. It was a well coordinated event with professional models, nice choreography with established brands and was timed to perfection. The music was great, the models were proficient and the hosts were gracious. This is an event which will always be at the top of our calendars in the future. The show was opened by a few items from the latest Fall collection by Seth Aaron the season 7 Winner of Project Runway. I am a huge fan of Seth’s work and meeting him made my day. Earlier in the day we had interviewed Donald J. Pliner (find his interview on page 14 of this issue) and we were glad to see him walk down the runway with the first models as his brand was perfectly crafted works of footwear art were presented on the runway in unison with the ‘Blue Jeans Bar’ and accessory brand ‘Jest Jewels’. The rest of the show was just a smooth, well coordinated event with stores from the ‘Row’ listed on the right (in order) showing of the latest Fall 2011 collections while the audience clapped and sipped Champagne.

The highlights of the afternoon for us were the collections by Boutique Harjuku & Big Buddha, Pink Stripes Boutique, Ted Baker and Anne Fontaine. Anne Fontaine presented a very chic line of womens evening wear in a black, white and pastel color palette with a lot of form fitting tights coupled with constructed jackets which really defining the 2011 Fall fashion trends. Ted Baker London in their traditional style presented a very vibrant yet chic Fall 2011 collection with a Magenta/Gold color palette coupled with other toned down pieces in black and grey to complete the collection. Overall very hi fashion and current!

Planet B

, a San Francisco based Fusion Music Band recently released their new single and music video and BAYFashion was invited to join them and their followers at Butter Night Club in the SOMA district of San Francisco for the video release party. PLANET B’s music was quite a revelation to us, a fusion between Hip Hop, Rock & Electro music with a tune that was catchy and had us moving our hips as soon as their video started playing on the projectors.

Sason and Shaun are talented vocal performers and we decided to do a quick impromtu interview to find out what they were all about and their musical inspirations Shankha: So tell us about your new single, is it available for download now? Sason: Today is the premiere of our new video for our new single ‘Trampstamp’. I am the lead singer but we both trade-off between me and Shaun on vocals whether we are rapping or singing.

Shankha: So is this a Rap Video or Hip hop?

Sason: This song actually is more our commercial Hip Hop direction. Its an electro Hip Hop club banger with some signature Planet B rock edges with guitars, as were known for our electronic rock & edgy hip hop music.

Shankha: Is this your debut album?

Shaun: This will be our debut album. We have dropped 2 singles before this and this will be the 3rd one. Also, our album is yet untitled, so for now were releasing Trampstamp as a single. We have enough tracks for 2 albums.

Shankha: So is this going to be available on iTunes? Shaun: Yes

Sason: Trampstamp is the first single that is going to be available & the song again is an ode and celebration of the female lower back tattoo, but its also a celebration of all female tattoos! n The Beauty Spot we will talk about one of the most important topics, makeup removal and skin cleansing. We tend to spend most of our time and money on buying makeup products and learning about makeup application techniques but most of us do not know how to take the makeup off properly which is as essential as applying it. Thorough skin cleansing is very important, be it makeup removal or just cleaning dirt, sweat or sunscreen. No makeup can look good if the skin is dull, has blackheads and clogged pores etc. For your skin to be healthy and glowing you need to use good cleansing products according to your skin type. I have tried many cleansers but following are my all time favorite products, as well as highly rated by other customers on multiple website.

1- Organic Face Nourishing Eye makeup Remover by Boots:

(Skin Type: All) I recently started using this product and simply loved it. It is organic, without any artificial ingredients and made of pure olive oil. Extremely gentle and nourishing for delicate area around the eyes. Activates with few drops of water, leaving eye area soft and moisturized. Very affordable and is readily available on any Target store.

2- Take the day off by Clinique:

(Skin Type: All) It is another product that I have been using for almost 10 years and simply loving it. Dissolves long wearing makeup, even waterproof mascara. Ophthalmologist Tested. Recommended for contact lens wearers.

3- Gentle Bi-Phase Eye makeup Remover by Chanel:

(Skin Type: Sensitive) As light as water with effective eye makeup removal, suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Water Cornflower Extract and Water Rose Extract comfort delicate eye area. It is a little pricier than the other two eye makeup removers that I mentioned.

4- Checks and Balances by Origins:

(All Skin Types) It is to be used all over the face to remove makeup, dirt and debris off of your skin, moisturizing dry areas and controlling oils in the oily areas of the face. This gentle, frothy face wash has broad Leaf Kelp Extract to discourage excess oil production, while Wheat Protein balances and protects dry prone zones. Tourmaline, aromatic Bergamot, Spearmint and Lavender are some of the luxurious ingredients for a delightful experience.

5- Aveda Perfecting Cleanser:

(Skin Type: All) Organic argan oil is one of the key ingredients in Aveda’s Green ScienceTM Skin Care, extracted from the nut of the fruit of the argan tree, which grows in Morocco. It leaves the skin soft, supple and refreshed

6- One Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser By Clarins Paris:

(All Skin Types) Orange extracts found in this product polish, revive and soften the skin whereas Moringa seed extracts clean the skin deeply as well as maintain the natural skin’s moisture balance. Silica Micro beads unclog the pores so that the skin can breathe.

7- Rinse Off Foaming Cleanser by Clinique:

(Skin Type: combination dry and oily) Love this product, you buy one and it lasts you forever due to its thickness. Foamy cream-mousse cleanser removes all types of makeup and sunscreens easily and gently.

8- Aloe Gentle Facial Wash by The Body Shop:

(Skin Type: Sensitive Skin) It is a great product by The Body Shop for sensitive skin. Very mild, soap-free cleansing foam that gently rinses away make-up, impurities and grime. Dermatologically approved and clinically proven as suitable for sensitive skin. The bottle finished pretty quickly though, but I would still buy another.

9-Vitamin E cream Cleanser By The Body Shop:

(Skin Type: All) It not only cleans but also vitamin E found in this product nourishes the skin during the cleansing process. Its texture is creamy and feels very soothing on the skin.

10- Neutorgena Facial Wipes:

(Skin Type: All) It removes almost all of your makeup with one or maximum two towelettes. It is a great product if you are traveling or on the go.

Perfectly Clean Splash Away foaming Cleanser: (Skin Type: Normal to combination) Great product for normal to combination skin type. Contains extracts of luxurious white water lily, senega and barberry to pamper your skin.

here is a lot of buzz about kale being the superstar of the green vegetables. It is packed full of vitamins especially K, A, C, and is a good source of manganese, calcium, and dietary fiber. Studies have shown that eating kale may: help prevent breast, prostate, colon, ovarian, and bladder cancers; regulate the body’s detoxification system; have anti-inflammatory effects; and lower cholesterol. According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, the risk of breast cancer can be reduced by 73% by eating just three servings of cabbage or broccoli a week – that is a powerful statistic!

2. Spinach: S

pinach is rich in vitamins K, A, and C, manganese, folate, magnesium, and iron. Studies have shown that itmay help protect against aggressive prostate cancer and for women, decrease the risk of ovarian cancer. It is also considered good for your heart and vessels, brain, eyes, and skin.

3. Broccoli: B

roccoli is a high dietary fiber vegetable – having even more fiber than kale. It contains vitamins C, K, A, plus folate, manganese, and iron. It also has compounds that may work to prevent stomach tumors and other cancers, as well as decrease inflammation.

ike kale and broccoli, collard greens are rich in dietary fiber. They are also good sources of vitamins K, A, C, plus manganese, folate, and calcium. As with the other cabbage-like vegetables, studies seem to demonstrate a significant reduction in cancer risks when these greens are eaten on a regular basis.

tudies have associated the folate in asparagus to a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Asparagus also contains vitamins K, C, A, B1, B2, manganese, and dietary fiber. Some research indicates that it may also act as a mild laxative and diuretic, removing water from your body and preventing bloating.

Yoga is everywhere and benefits nearly everyone–even my dog is taking classes! By Joan Currie

Americans have embraced yoga in a big way in recent years - from the traditional Hatha practice to a myriad of other styles such as Ashtanga, Bikram, and Yin. You can find classes everywhere - even on beaches and mountain tops, and, if you can afford it, you can attend luxury yoga retreats in California and beyond.

T

here are many health benefits associated with the practice of yoga and the scientific community has begun to study its positive effects on the mind and body. Some of their findings include improvements in strength, endurance, flexibility, posture, and balance. There are also some areas that contribute to an overall sense of well being such as improvements in sexual performance, weight control, and pain tolerance. In fact, many doctors are now recommending it for their patients as part of their comprehensive health regimen. Westerners were first introduced to yoga in the 19th century and the growth in popularity from the 1930s forward is due in part from people you may have heard of - Yogi Maharishi Mahesh of Transcendental Meditation and Yoga Guru Swami Sivananda. However, yoga has been around for centuries with archaeologists having found evidence of yoga postures dating back to 3,000 BCE. Much of the yoga that you will be practicing today draws from the sacred Hindu scriptures and songs and also Buddhist practices from 500 BCE to 550 CE. In the Bay area, yoga classes vary in type and form according to the facility, philosophy, instructor, and student mix. It is a good idea to consult with your doctor if you have any questions about whether yoga is right for you. Also be sure to inform your instructor if you have any limitations or special goals so that she can help make the class work for you. Below is a description of the most popular forms of yoga to help you decide where to begin. You might consider attending several different types of yoga classes and/or try out various instructors to determine which ones fit best.

atha yoga is the granddaddy of yoga classes and is a great class for beginners and experts alike. Expect a sampling from the different yoga styles, including meditations, postures, and breathing techniques.

yengar, a form of hatha yoga, stresses alignment and sequencing. It is another good class for beginners and people with injuries or limited flexibility. Props such as straps, blocks, pillows, and chairs are used.

shtanga yoga is a more athletic form of yoga that emphasizes strength, endurance, and flexibility. The class appeals to those in good physical condition looking for a more intense workout and is based on a set of foundational poses of varying degrees of difficulty. You may even have a celebrity or CEO on the mat beside you.

ikram or hot yoga is practiced in a 105 degrees F room and be forewarned, it is often combined with 40% humidity. This class attracts experienced yoga students or those with a high level of physical fitness. Expect to sweat more than you thought humanly possible.

K

undalini yoga pose sequences can be quite challenging so beginners might want to discuss expectations about the level of difficulty with the instructor before joining the group. In addition to the usual yoga emphasis on meditation and breathing, Kundalini yoga may also include more spiritual elements such as chanting and singing.

in yoga focuses on a meditative practice with long pose holds, sometimes up to twenty minutes. However, if you chose this class as a beginner, do not be discouraged if you can only hold the positions for five minutes to start. In addition to the wonderful emotional and health benefits from yoga, you can have fun and may develop many lifelong friendships!
