By Joan Currie The multi-talented and multi-faceted Bacca da Silva talked with Bay Fashion Magazine surrounded by his stunning couture collections at the flagship store that bears his name on 590 Sutter Street in San Francisco, California.

JC: You were born in Brazil. What Brazilian influences have inspired your work? Bacca: Brazilian nature, architecture, urban scenes and culture have influenced me because I grew up in São Paulo. For example, in some of my sweaters I use Carmen Miranda images and color combinations such as cobalt blue, scarlet, and orange - the colors of a parrot I saw in the Amazon landscape. JC: What is unique about growing up in São Paulo versus Rio or other parts of Brazil? Bacca: São Paulo is a big city with brick, grey colors, and asphalt. In terms of being pretty, it would have been better to grow up in Rio or Bahia. São Paulo’s advantage is that everything comes first to that city and it has better shows, better culture, better colleges, and it is much better for meeting people. JC: Your mother was a seamstress. What imprint did her sewing have on you? Bacca: I was the baby of the family, so I had to be with her all the time. She would sew for my family, things like pants or even a blanket. I would sit next to her and sometimes I would get bored, get a doll, and make little clothes for it. I would also go with my mother to buy fabric. JC: Do you have any poetic inspirations? Bacca: I often go to events and shows. Let me give you an example of how my mind works: When I started to design this new fall collection, I did all the beading, designed all the pieces, knew how it was going to look, I did some prints and when I put everything together, it all made sense. Interestingly when I was looking back at my phone pictures of the Calder to Warhol exhibit at SFMOMA, I saw images that had inspired me but I was not aware of that at the time. One was a big gold curtain that separated the exhibition rooms, another one was Jeff Koons’ porcelain sculpture of Michael Jackson and Bubbles, and there was also a shot “Strut” of Christian Dior’s crystal shoes by Marilyn Winter. It is hard to say what inspires me, sometimes I find out why and sometimes I don’t know. In a previous collection, it was the single word “hybrid” that moved me.

JC:You have said, “ Wear couture to the grocery store.” Why should men and women wear couture? Bacca: My joke about wearing couture to the grocery store has two messages. The first is be playful, life is short. Be the best you can be. Don’t worry about what other people think! So if you feel like it, you can wear couture all the time. The second is of a more serious nature - be sustainable.It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to wear couture, but buy something that you really love and are going to treasure for a long time. Buy things that you care about.

INTERVIEW

JC:How do you keep motivated to create new and unique collections for both men and women season after season, especially now that you have an international following?

JC: What is the significance of the scorpion in your family crest?

Bacca: It is part of my personality that no matter how things are going I want to do better.The act of creation is always going to be part of me. When I make an outfit and someone buys it, then it comes to life. It is the happiest time of my life now, because I am constantly creating. I have so many ideas beyond the collection I am working on now. I am always thinking ahead to the next collection and the one after that.

Bacca: The scorpion is a very resistant creature. It has been on earth longer than the dinosaurs. To me it represents good quality. It is strong, passionate, sexy but not vulgar, loyal, and it doesn’t forgive so easily. If you are part of its circle, you are always going to be. But, it has a dark side - remember the fable of the scorpion and the turtle? It’s in the scorpion’s nature to act a certain way. Coincidentally, I am a Gemini but when I calculated my Rising Sign, I discovered it was Scorpio – also my mother’s sign!

JC:You received your MBA from the prestigious Thunderbird School of Global Management. Would you recommend that degree to fellow fashion designers? Does being involved in the business side of fashion take time away from your creative endeavors?

JC: The video that plays here in the store and also on your blog empowers your customers to keep their eyes open for good opportunities, develop good habits, dance, exercise, laugh, kiss and love! Do you live by that philosophy?

Bacca: I would advise a fashion designer to get a business degree and even better an MBA as most design schools do not devote sufficient time to the business side of the industry. If fashion designers do not have the skill set needed to attend business school, then I would recommend taking some business classes or internship, working in the business side of fashion for a period of time.If you have a small fashion company, you have to be business savvy as you do most of the business things yourself. I have a business partner who has an MBA from the University of Chicago and does the financial and accounting aspects of the business. I still do some of it, but not all, so I still have time to create. If the company gets bigger, you can delegate a little more, but you know your business plan, customer base, what improvements are needed, and marketing strategies, et cetera. These days, in addition to being creative, a designer is a brand, an image, a public relations and marketing person. Think of how Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford present themselves. JC: Where do you see yourself and your label in ten years? Bacca: From the beginning, I created this brand with a business plan and marketing strategy that included the name, Bacca da Silva, the logo, and the elements of the logo. In ten years, I see myself becoming a recognizable brand in select retail places around the globe. This brand would be synonymous with luxury and good taste, like the French phrase, bon chic bon genre, and with the best quality possible.

Bacca: Yes! I wrote the script for the video based on the way I live my life. I have been through a lot and seen a lot of things, so I got to a point where I could look at things in an analytical way. I take chances, and although I am a very serious person, I don’t take life too seriously. It’s more a philosophy. In my heart, I was hoping people would embrace those quotes and follow them. JC: What are your passions in addition to fashion? Bacca: My passions are photography and movies, especially fashion movies. I like the idea of creating anything from scratch; something that did not exist before and you make it reality. Home cooking, baking - I make a fabulous chicken lasagna and banana bread. I like to invite my friends over for a meal. I love traveling but hate getting to places. Paris is my favorite place because it is so magical and, of course, because of the fashion. I just came back from Honolulu and loved the beach, sunsets, and nature there. I grew up in the city and I live in the city here, so for me it is important to get away from that environment and recharge. JC: If there were a fire and you had to take three items from your closet, what would they be? Bacca:I would grab my sneakers, my rings, and my cashmere Bacca da Silva sweaters – for sure!

JC: Who are your customers? Bacca: My customers are people who appreciate creativity and originality in pieces of fine clothing. People in the creative field such as artists, designers, actors, filmmakers, and singers buy my clothes for their uniqueness. Natalie Cole bought one of my white coats.

Being a Bay area model, it can be hard for us to find amazing talent to collaborate with. It’s hard to make a living because paid gigs are so limited here. But I aim for the stars and plan to achieve it and elevate my game to the point where not only modeling, but producing/directing and coordinating large fashion shoots becomes synonimous to my name. For my first directorial venture I decided to follow my ‘inspirations derived from the ‘Raw Beauty’ of my model friends, who look ravishing without the help of any expensive designer attire. First step was to find unique models for a very diverse look, models that could push the limits with their natural beauty. After it was all done, the team consisted of 12 models, 4 makeup artists, 3 hair stylists, a wardrobe stylist and of course Tim Engle as the photographer assisted by Kody James Pickern with video. The passion of the day is reflected in the shots on the following pages where we are covered in nothng but small sheets showing off our Raw Female Energy and showcasing the sexuality of a woman while keeping our dignity intact. ‘The Trims’ are in the house Led by rhythm guitarist and lead singer Gabriel Maciel, The Trims are an up and coming band from San Jose who just released their first music video ‘The Breeze’ Watch it here > http://live105.radio.com/2011/10/24/ world-premiere-video-the-trims-the-breeze/ The Trims are primarily an Indie Alternative Rock band with a twist of modern pop. The band consists of Gabriel Maciel (Lead Singer), Bryan Aguirre (Lead Guitar), Eric Scharer (Bass Guitar) & Billy Brady (Drums). The band was formed in 2009 and they already have an an album out in iTunes named

‘The Trims, We cried for fun’

INTERVIEW Shankha: So Gabriel, how was the Trims formed? Are you a band of friends or you found each other through music?

Gabriel: The San Jose music scene at that time seemed to only cater to progressive rock, punk rock, and metal fans. Even though I am a fan of those genres too, I am a bigger fan of 80’s music and indie/alt rock. People like me only had one maybe two places to go to hear the music we liked, and it was usually to a DJ, not a live band. So I said “screw this, I’m going to start a band that plays the type of music I like!” And The Trims were born. I’m the common denominator in this band being that I brought the four of us together. Eric (bass) and I were in a band together some years back called “Manchester School.” Billy (drums) and I have been pals since high school. Bryan was actually trying to form his own band at the same time I was forming The Trims. I happened to stumble across an ad he had posted on craigslist. I answered it, he replied, and the rest is history. So even though everyone in the band other than Billy and I found each other through music, we have become a very tight knit band of friends. Shankha: Bryan, what do you think sets the Trims apart from other Indie Rock bands like ‘The Beets’ and ‘The Vaselines’?

Bryan: There are a couple things that I feel immediately set our

band apart from most Indie Rock bands. First, we are a band that doesn’t feel the need to create a lackluster song just to fill the set or album. We each are our own worst critics and sometimes each other’s as well. That is why we only move forward with songs that have that “hook” that will make people want to hear more. To sum it up we play what we would want to hear if we were members of the audience at one of our shows. Second, you don’t see a lot of Indie Alternative bands from the U.S. with most of the members coming from a Mexican-American background.

Shankha: Billy, drums have always played

a huge part in a Rock bands success, we noticed that you play with a lot of passion. What is your inspiration? What is driving your music?

Billy: I feel that my passion for playing is

probably the main ingredient in my style, or flavor on the drums. In the past, I have had a difficult time holding back and just playing in the pocket (keeping it simple and holding down the beat). Playing for The Trims has allowed me to master the art of staying in the pocket and playing what the songs call for; just feeling the music. We have a great dynamic playing together and I think it shows in our set. I think our fans enjoy us even more when they see us play live because of the intensity we show playing together. That is my main inspiration. Watching our audience get blown away at our shows is what drives me and The Trims.

Shankha: Eric, we found you to be the silent

action star of The Trims. You aptly play the bass, tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to be part of The Trims?

Eric: Why thank you! I’ve been playing bass

for about ten years off and on and have been in two other bands before The Trims. As Gabe mentioned, he and I met in a former band “Manchester School.” He came on as a fifth member to our four piece to play rhythm guitar. When that band ended, Gabe and I remained friends and would get together to play music. Nothing serious at first. Then he asked me to listen to some demos he’d been working on. I was incredibly impressed! Gabe never let on he was such an amazing songwriter, singer, and guitarist the whole first two years I knew him! With those initial demos, he, myself, and a rotating cast of guitarists and drummers fleshed them out. We were very happy when finally Bryan and Billy came on board to fill the lead guitarist and drums spots because that’s when we knew The Trims would finally get off the ground!

Shankha: What is your favorite joint or club

to play at? Most indie bands have a favorite place which was the root of their music.

Bryan: I personally love playing at The Blank

Club in San Jose, CA because I still go there as a fan to check out local and national acts that I love. The Old Wagon is a new favorite spot of ours because it’s a beautiful outdoor venue and the manager Jason has been very supportive of our band.

Shankha: We know you released your first music video, and it features BAYFashions very own Ukushu Khrystyna. What is the inspiration for that song and the video?

Bryan: That song started as a demo I was

tinkering around with at home. The music is inspired by 80’s post-punk/New Wave music, but with a modern dance feel. Once we started jamming it out and everyone added their own style it really came together very well.

Gabriel: Being in love with someone is a double edged sword. It can be quite wonderful or it can be a living hell. When the latter is taking place, some people fantasize about harming their lover in one way or another, other individuals actually do it. And that’s the idea behind this song and video. We are placing the viewer/listener in the shoes of an individual who is experiencing an all too human emotion that everyone has had or has yet to experience at some

point during a romantic relationship gone south, but would never dream of admitting it. On A side note, we would like to give Ukushu A huge ‘Thank You’ for being so patient and professional with us during the video shoot. Ukushu was in an unheated pool filming her scenes. She didn’t complain once. So thank you Ukushu, you are truly a class act.

Gabriel: We actually just released a 6 song EP titled “Cut To Fit.” It is a follow up to our full length album titled “We Cried For Fun.” Both can be found on iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, and pretty much any other digital distribution site. Gabriel: Pump up the volume is RIGHT!!!! We are setting our sights on the major cities of the U.S.: San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, NYC, Austin, Denver, etc. Playing shows to new audiences is very important in not only the success, but also the survival of a band. IFelyf beauty is all it takes for success, well then Ivory Coast music sensation Tchaco embodies this quality and more. She is one of the San Francisco bay area music scene’s best kept secret. Born in Cote d’Ivoire the West Africa, Fely, s passion with music began in her early teenager years. She remembers escaping many nights to the neighborhood local bands. After realizing her path, Fely came home one day and told her father that music is what she would love to do. Against her father’s negative response, she decided to take matters in her own hands, left home and quit school, then later on joined a group in Yamoussoukro the political Capital as a lead singer. In her native country the Cote d’Ivoire, competition is though as the country is home to many awesome performers and creators of many African music styles who have went to become international super stars such as Alpha Blondy and many more. In her debut, Fely adopted Latin rhythms, mixed a good crafted musical style of her own, steeped in the traditional rhythm of both her gouro and Bete ethnic culture. She subsequently released 2 albums in the style.

music video honor for “Ivoire Clip Show” in 1998, on the national TV. Both albums critically acclaimed sent Fely on concert tours throughout West Africa and rocketed her to national stardom, reveling her talent as a singer songwriter, performer and dancer. Television appearances on many entertainment shows coupled with music magazines interviews making headlines celebrating her talents, Fely became a household name. Her latest release is “ aturite”, a collection of songs with a strong message of hope and peace not only for her country, but for the entire world. Fely sings in many different languages, English, French and in her native Gouro language, emphasizing on her cultural background, infused with traditional folk rhythms. The central theme of “Maturite” is Africa; Fely pays tribute to Africa for its contribution to the world. “Goba” the first track on the album has been selected as a finalist in the world music category by the international songwriting competition listening committee.

I am devoted to this.” As in her previous albums, Fely writes her songs and self-produces her albums. She also designs and assumes the art direction. As versatile she may be, she also has remained true to her roots.

Everyone is falling for Summer by Adrienne Glenn This local bay area model has had a career of great success within the plus size industry; since 2007 when she started her career by modeling for the plus size clothing giant Torrid, she has been taking the modeling world by storm. Her lovely golden locks and California surfer girl looks can also quickly morph into a stunning high fashion profile, this is the making of a great and successful model. Features in numerous magazines, walking many runways, and striking poses for some leading clothing companies are just a few of her accomplishments. Part of Sumer Noelle’s success, is a result of her love for the world of fashion world and her desire to see more naturally sized women a part of it. When asked what she likes most about being a model, she says, “It allows me to see and appreciate my beauty. I’m a wife and a mom of two amazing sons. Zumba is the dance and fitness phenomenon that is sweeping the globe. To date it boasts more than twelve million followers in 125 countries. Colombian-born Alberto Perez, or Beto, as he is known to his devotees, is the dancer, choreographer, and dynamic face of the Zumba brand. Beto told the Today show in August 2011 that the Zumba program was created in the 1990s when he was teaching aerobics classes. “ One day I needed to teach a class but I forgot my music. I only had in my bag one tape with different kinds of music. I had reggaeton, American music, Indian music, flamenco, international music, and I started to improvise for one hour,” Beto said. The students liked the combination of the different rhythms and dance moves. He could not have predicted that that lucky accident would be the start of an unparalleled Zumba fitness empire, that not only promotes Zumba classes but DVDs, music CDs, a video game, clothing, and accessories. “Zumba” is not a real word per se - it was developed to be the identifying brand name for Zumba fitness’ dance programs and products. There are more than a thousand Zumba classes within fifty miles of San Francisco. The classes typically last for one hour and include basic dance steps and aerobic movements. Check out any YouTube Zumba video and you will see how easy it is to follow the steps. The choreography not only incorporates the urban reggaeton style, but borrows from other dance genres as well: hip-hop, martial arts, Latin dances (merengue, chacha, mambo, samba, salsa), Bollywood, and belly dance. According to the Zumba Fitness website (www. Zumba. com), there are 6 types of Zumba Classes in addition to the basic one. Each class has a slightly different focus but uses the same dynamic music selections. Before beginning a new exercise program, it is important to consult with your doctor if you have any musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neurological, metabolic, reproductive, auditory, or any other concerns to determine if Zumba is the right class for you. Expect loud music.

Below is a breakdown of the different class options: Zumba - The basic Zumba class is described as “exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats.” Expect to be fully engaged in the music, moves, and spirit of the class. Many class members become lifelong friends. 1. Zumba Gold – Baby Boomers, beginners, and those getting back into shape following an injury or inactivity will like this basic Zumba class with modifications in intensity, pacing, and positioning. The fun Zumba music and enthusiasm of the class sometimes makes it difficult to dance and exercise at a slower pace. 2. Zumba Toning – This class combines strength training with a cardiovascular workout. Expect to use props, called Toning Sticks, to help work specific areas of the body such as the abdomen, gluteus and leg muscles. 3. Zumbatomic - Four to twelve-year-old children will love the kid-friendly atmosphere of this class. The focus is on improving co-ordination and physical fitness in a non-competitive way. Expect to get the whole family involved in the fun of this class. 4. Zumba in the Circuit – This unique thirty-minute workout combines the basic Zumba dance-fitness workout with circuit training. Expect to burn a lot of calories. Instructors can modify this class to meet all students’ levels of fitness. 5. Zumba Gold Toning – Aimed at Baby Boomers and beginners, this class offers Zumba dance moves with strength, range of movement, and coordination training. 6. Aqua Zumba - Water aerobics has never been so much fun! This class combines the classic Zumba class with the challenge of an aquatic environment. The effects of buoyancy and resistance of the water make this class a great cardiovascular and toning workout. Expect to really enjoy this workout. Zumba classes provide an excellent way to get in shape and create a community of people who share the same love of exercise, dance, and music.

There is a saying that ‘Eyes are the Window to One’s Soul’. Our Eyes are the first thing that define our personality as we meet new people, one glimpse into a persons eyes gives and introduction to the very basis of their being. Eyes also makeup a large part of your beauty and need to be take care of to preserve their Eyes are the most delicate and sensitive part of your face therefore you need to take extra care of them. Early signs of aging can be seen on eyes before any other part of the face. Fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness around the eye area are some of the most common problems. Stress and lack of sleep can make eyes look tired and dull. Smoking and too much alcohol are not only bad for overall health but also play a major role in premature aging. High quantity of sodium consumption can also result in eye bags due to fluid retention. In order to take care of your eyes maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, rich in vitamin A and antioxidants. Drink lots of water and get a good night’s sleep Do not wait till your 30’s or 40’s to start taking care of eyes as early as possible. Under eye area tends to get dry resulting in fine lines, turning into deep wrinkles. Invest in some good eye cream with vitamin A, E, PSP, Hyaluronic acid and aloe in it. Use your ring finger to massage around the eye area. Ring finger has the lightest touch, perfect for massage without putting too much pressure on the delicate eye capillaries. Massage in gentle tapping movement under the eye and on the brow bone. Avoid using eye cream on the lids because it can travel into your eyes resulting in eye irritation. Gentle lymphatic drainage massage around the eye contour i.e. massage in circular movement will reduce dark circles and puffiness and brighten up the eye area by removing toxins and improving blood circulation. Only use as much eye cream as suggested on the product, excessive use can make your eye look puffier and may cause acne and white heads on the cheeks.

Homemade masks are great to preserve the beauty of your eyes. Place fresh and crisp cucumber slices on your lids for a soothing effect. Make another antioxidant rich mask by refrigerating moist tea bags and placing them on your lids for ten to fifteen minutes. Protect your eyes from the sun damage. Always wear an Eye cream with the sun block in it, before going out in the sun. Wear sunglass with maximum protection against UV A and B. As for the makeup, always use quality products. To diminish the look of fine lines apply eye cream before wearing eye makeup. Cover the dark circles with an under eye concealer. Use mascara after curling your lashes. Fuller lashes add beauty and youth to your eyes. You can follow fashion trends related to eye makeup but always keep your eye shape in mind. If your eyes are too small avoid using black eyeliner in the waterline. Deep-set eyes do not require too much of contouring. For wide-set eyes apply more shadow towards the inner corners of the eyes and for close-set eyes apply shadow focusing more on the outer edges. Other factors to keep in mind are your age, occasion and the right amount of makeup. If you follow these beauty tips, your eyes and eye makeup both, will look flawless.
