Atage95,LeeGerthaDicksonpassedawayonTuesday,December27,2022,inthe hospital,inMarietta,Georgia. Shewassurroundedbysomeofherchildrenandgrandchildrenwithwhomshesharedloveandhappiness. Shewasknownforherjoyofcookingand gardeningandwasproudofherlong-timerelationshipswithfriendsandfamily. She lovedtravelingwithherfamily,butenjoyedvisitswiththeminherhome,evenmore. Asa proudmatriarch,shemodeledhardwork,respect,andkindness.Shewasquickwitha wordofpraiseorcriticismandmadeclearwhereyoustoodwithher. Asmuchasshewas adisciplinarian,shewasequallymischievouswithherquickwitandwrysmile.LeeGertha affectionatelywascalled“MotherDear”byfamilymembersandmanylongtimefriends. Shelivedafulllifeandisthemainfeatureofmanyofhergrandchildren’s“Granma”stories. Whetherstoriesreminiscentofherlaughter,hersternness,orofherunconditionallove, MotherDear,Mom,Momma,orGranmawillforeverliveintheirhearts. Allwhoknewand lovedherhaveastorytotellandremember.LeeGerthawasafunny,smart,strong-willed, andlovingwomanwhofiercelysupportedherfamilyandfriends.
LeeGerthawasborninMontgomery,ALonAugust22,1927.Shewastheoldestof sevenchildrenfromtheunionofRobertManningandMaryDavisManning.Shewasa faithfulfollowerofChrist.DuringherChristianjourney,shewasbaptizedasachildatMt. GilliardBaptistChurch.Asanadult,shejoinedFirstCMEChurchandwasanactivememberaschoirdirector,trustee,andusher.Sheservedherchurchandcommunitywitha mealsministry,TheSisterhood,preparingmealsforseniors.Asasenior,shejoinedSt.Paul AMEChurchwithherdaughter,Mary,andbestfriend,BarbaraWilliams.Sheservedonthe StewardessBoardandwithLadiesinFaithTogether(LIFT)untilherhealthdeclined.
ShewasadevotedwifetoIsaacDickson,Sr.untilhisdeathin1990.Shejoinedhimasa memberintheKnightsandDaughtersofTabor,andheldactiveleadershiproles.She previouslywasaffiliatedwiththeOrderoftheEasternStar.LeeGertha’scommunity involvementintensifiedasanactivemotherofeightchildren.Sheworkedtirelesslytosupporttheireducationandextracurricularactivitiesinsportsandmusic.Shewaselected PTApresidentmanytimesoverthecourseofherchildren’sschoolyearsandservedasa bandbooster.
LeeGerthaleavessixchildrentocherishhermemorieswiththeirfamilies.Thesurvivors includeMaryD.Sanders,PamelaD.Harris,EstellaD.Thomas(Wesley),IsaacDickson,Jr. (Darlene),JohnEricDickson,andKendraD.Hudson(Rufus,III).Shelovedfifteengrandchildren,manygreatgrandchildren,andoneGodson.
Shewasprecededindeathbyhersons,AlvinCooperandJamesManning,hersister, SarahEngram,andherbrother,ArthurManning.LeeGerthaissurvivedbyhersiblings, FreddieManning,GeorgeManning,ShirleyAnnJones(Eddie),andJamesE.Manning (Claudia),andahostofnieces,nephews,cousins,andfriends.
