IT’S HERE. The first ever Knowledge Integration eXhibition, KI-X! Your favourite third-year cohort has been sweating away the last seven months to create this object-based learning experience to share with the entire Waterloo community. Touring the exhibits, you will learn why robots may make you feel uncomfortable. Explore forms of peaceful protest and how you might get involved. Learn how limitations in mathematical tools led to the development of new ones. Understand the impact of a concussion, and learn about other neurological phenomena like dreams, or why some people see letters and numbers in colour. Discover how archaeologists determine the purpose of an unknown object, and have a chance to try it out yourself.

Go Green Challenge Hello Fellow Integrators of Knowledge! I recently had the fantastical opportunity to participate of in a real life interdisciplinary team project. My team consisted of Melissa Gerrard, a studier of Environment Resources, Karim Rahemtulla, a Planner, and myself, an Integrator of Knowledge. The project: TD FEF Go Green Challenge. The brief: find the most pressing issue inhibiting sustainability at your school and make a video describing your innovative way of tackling it. My group decided to bring the issues back a step or two to get to the real root of the problem: people. We realized we had to make sustainability a human centered issue; you can give people all the recycling bins in the world but to truly spark change we have to change the way people think about the environment. To do this we must start by getting people back in touch with nature; that is our solution. We would increase green spaces on campus giving people more opportunity to get outside and enjoy nature. We submitted our video but now we need your help. The “People’s Choice” portion of the competition just opened and will continue until March 11, so we need you to go online, watch our video, then, if you like the idea, vote for it and tell all your friends about it!!! The voting is one vote per email, and after you vote check your email for the confirmation email, click on the link and CONFIRM THAT VOTE!

Collaborative Culture S

This is why I’m writing. So call it what you want, I’ll call it the collaborative revolution for now.

It would seem that our interconnectedness and, indeed, collective intelligence may be key to our survival through these challenging times that we’re in, and that face us.

Consider the ways in which the internet has changed our world in the last 20 years. Might a future human look back and think of the invention of the internet as the spark for the largest scale paradigmatic revolution in the history of humanity (so far)?

What time is it in the world? This is system’s awareness.

My guess would be that the answer to this would be yes for those who were at adulthood already when the internet was first invented, and its also possible that they’ve taken it for granted now. Meanwhile, many of us who grew up with it may not have asked these questions at all.

Have you ever questioned the internet? Have you ever contemplated its significance?

Ponder this if you will: Looking back through humanity’s existence we see long periods of time where not a lot changes. Eventually, though, humans would undergo a drastic change in consciousness and behaviour. The decision (or necessity) to settle down and grow food changed everything. The adoption of machine-based manufacturing in the 1800’s changed everything again.

o a question one might be asking if you’ve been following my series is “What are all these random things that Connor keeps throwing in his column?” The answer to that question is “artifacts,” and they’re not random. They’re artifacts specific to a transitional shift in the cultural paradigm. I see this shift as both necessary and desirable, and it’s gaining traction every second. With the flourishing of open-source technology, with the groundswell for change in Egypt, with online and offline peer-to-peer technologies, it’s gaining traction. And with every utterance of localization and resilience, it’s gaining traction.

(3000 words or less) 2. Short responses to our thematic question: “What are the characteristics of an ideal interdisciplinary program?” (500 words or less)

In addition to editors, we are also looking for written submissions. Submissions can fall under two categories:

Erudito’s goal is to provide a platform to promote and critique undergraduate interdisciplinary education, thought, and research. The journal’s first issue was published in February 2010 and themed “What are the benefits of interdisciplinary education?” This year’s theme is: “What are the characteristics of an ideal interdisciplinary program?”

Erudito is Canada’s national peer-reviewed undergraduate journal on interdisciplinary education. The journal was created in 2010 as an offshoot of the 1st annual Combining Two Cultures national undergraduate conference on interdisciplinary education, hosted by the Arts and Science program at McMaster University.

Erudito is looking for editors and submissions!

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

issie has just recently released her debut album “Catching a Tiger”. She is a resilient singer/songwriter from Mississippi who has toured with Ray LaMontagne, A.A. Bondy, City & Colour, and The Low Anthem, and she eventually tackled a whirlwind SXSW schedule (10 shows, 4 days) with ease! She has a strong voice to match her strong and rebellious demeanour. She is featured this week in the leading spot of the seven. The intro and hook on “When I’m Alone” is one that I’m sure you will love. Check her out for a wide range in music diversity as she does everything from this song to a cover of Kid Cudi. Grammy winners Arcade Fire also appear this week along with some selections from next week’s feature “Watch Listen Tell”. Enjoy!

Connections COmmittee by: Ryley Kornelson

KI…the new frontier. These are the voyages of the Connections Committee. Its ongoing mission: to explore new opportunities, to seek out new students, and new partnerships. To boldly grow, where no program has grown before! As a new program, we face many challenges. We are small but mighty, we are quality and not quantity. KISS will be forming a cool new subcommittee called Connections Committee that will focus specifically on these new-program challenges, and bring in cool solutions like the problem-solvers that we are. First meeting: Tuesday, March 22, 2011. @ENV Coffeeshop. 4pm.
