In 2010, Kirknewton residents were asked what would improve the life of those who live and work here. Three of the things were more facilities in the centre of the village, a daytime social space and more activities for young people.

Thanks to Leader funding Kirknewton Community Development Trust built the Green Room, a zero energy development, which opened in February. Thanks to Big Lottery Scotland we are able to fund two new staff posts for three years – a Youth and Volunteer Co-ordinator and an Admin and Finance Officer.

These two roles, along with your help, will develop and support groups to make things identified in the public consultation happen.

The brochure you hold in your hands will hopefully guide you on what is available now across four venues – the Green Room, the Village Hall, Potter Around and the Church Hall. There are also previews of upcoming events outside these venues too!

We hope the brochure will also inspire you. Many of the clubs, events, activities or skills workshops are run

by Kirknewton residents. Many more are working voluntarily behind the scenes trying to find solutions and funding to make your ideas a reality. Thanks to every one of them.

The Green Room PROGRAMME TUESDAY 22ND APRIL JUNE 27th DROP IN at The Green Room 9am-1pm Monday- Friday.

Drop in to The Green Room each weekday morning for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat. The session is supported by a local volunteer. Lap tops are available for use, Ipad mini’s as well as KOBO readers. Our eco-friendly building is cosy and warm so feel free to pop in and find out what is happening in the local community.

HOMEWORK CLUB 3.30pm-5pm Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The homework club is for both primary and high school pupils who are looking for a relaxed and peaceful environment for studying. Joining a homework club can be a fantastic way to boost your motivation and ensure you complete your work on time. A KCDT volunteer is present but parents/carers are most welcome.

KEYBOARDING SKILLS CLASSES Monday April 28th - 23rd June 6pm-7pm for 9 weeks / 7pm-8pm. £67.5. Deposit £30. Remaining £37.5 payable on week 5.

The class is conducted by an experienced teacher and is tailored to suit the pupil whether beginner or intermediate.

8 years + Classes take place within a friendly atmosphere and should they wish to students may be put forward for Trinity Guildhall exams in electronic keyboard. Keyboards are provided at the Green Room. However pupils will require an instrument to practise on at home.

Energy Advice.

The Energy Advice Project has received funding from the Climate Challenge Fund to provide energy advice and assistance throughout West Lothian.

Individuals accessing the session can book home assesment appointments which will provide advice in ways to reduce energy usage, access to grants and schemes for energy efficiency measures and help with reducing bills.

Why is the Green Room so warm and cosy?

The Green Room has been built with a strong focus on very high levels of insulation and air-tightness in an attempt to reduce the running cost and our reliance on fossil fuels to an absolute minimum The building utilises Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) as the main structural elements for walls and roof.

What are SIPS A SIP panel comprises Polyurethane Foam Insulation sandwiched between two layers of Orientated Strand Board (OSB). The resultant material is both very rigid and highly insulating. It is a development of an idea originally proposed by the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

To supplement the already high insulation values of this material we have added a further 50mm of urethane foam insulation inside the building to make it really cosy.

Minister Opens the Green Room The Minister for Environment and Climate Change Paul Wheelhouse MSP has officially opened the Kirknewton Green Room, a zero energy development built by Kirknewton Community Development Trust (KCDT).

The Green Room was part financed by the Scottish Government and the European Community West Lothian Leader 2008 – 2013 programme who contributed £120,000 to the project.

The project is a key part of the Kirknewton Community Development Plan 2012-2104, which was based on a

a self-levelling screed that contains hot-water pipes forming a large heat-store and radiator combined.

Heat energy is supplied by storing water heated overnight by off-peak electricity, in a 300 litre insulated tank with an ordinary programmer that calls for heat and a thermostat that regulates the room temperature. The windows are low u value and the best we could afford.

The Ventilation System Because we have made the structure air-tight to a very high level we have fitted a ventilation system that introduces fresh air from outside to make the room comfortable.

This system captures heat energy from the outgoing stale air to pre-heat the incoming fresh air at an efficiency of over 90% and in summer it allows cool air to enter without any pre-heating to maintain maximum comfort levels and avoid over-heating.

Kirknewton Community Development Trust invested £30,000 in the project and over £10,000 worth of volunteer hours. The running of the Green Room and the work of the Development Trust has been supported by a Big Lottery Scotland grant of £266,000 for the next three years. This includes the employment of a new Youth and Volunteer Co-ordinator and Finance and Administration Officer, both of who support local groups and projects.

The future sustainability for the building and the project will come from a ground breaking community benefit and investment opportunity KCDT have negotiated with wind farm developer EFRG Fauch Hill. The community, who backed the development by 65% in an independent survey, are expecting the announcement of the public enquiry shortly.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Paul Wheelhouse said, “Climate Change is possibly the biggest threat we face as a global community

Solar Photovoltaic Panels There is a 4.0 kW Solar Photovoltaic system on the south facing roof that we hope will generate enough electricity to make the building self-sufficient in energy for both heating and lighting over the yearly cycle. Electricity from our panels is sold to the grid, but only after we have satisfied our needs in running the building. We will measure this energy use and report on the balance achieved between use and production at the end of the first year.

Natural Larch Planks The outside of the building is clad in natural Larch planks that have been purposely left “as-sawn” so that they hold a very high coat weight of paint for maximum long-term durability. The roof is made of stainless-steel that is “roll-bonded” with a zinc surface that prevents it from being too shiny on a sunny day and allows the material to be solder-joined when necessary.

Throughout the design of this building we have attempted to use sustainable methods of construction that minimise the embodied energy in the materials and, at the same time, deliver a building with low maintenance costs and a minimal carbon footprint..
