WELCOME

Dear Friends, This summer, we expanded KIPP Bridge Academy from a middle school to a full TK-8. Founded in 2002, KIPP Bridge was the first KIPP school in California. It has long been the dream of many in our team and family and in the West Oakland community to help set students on the path to choice-filled lives from a much earlier age.

The growth of KIPP Bridge marks the second KIPP elementary school in the Bay Area and progress towards our commitment to work together with parents to magnify our impact in communities facing educational inequity. In the year ahead, we will build on this commitment by preparing to launch our twelfth school and first KIPP school in East Palo Alto — a community rich in history and culture, whose children are brimming with talent and potential.

We will also continue on our journey to get better as we get bigger. Part of what this means is embracing that KIPP is not only a network of schools but also a social justice movement. We hope that our schools are a pathway for those who have historically been marginalized, brutalized, and silenced to gain freedom, power and full participation in our democracy and in society.

Right now, this work has never mattered more. I believe in Dr. King’s proclamation that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Our incredible educators bend that arc with the skill, love, and commitment they bring to our schools each day. Our friends and supporters bend that arc with the investment they make in our students and the support and encouragement they provide along the way. And our nearly 4,700 students and 1,300 alumni in college bend that arc with each and every demonstration of critical thinking, expression of bravery and compassion, Advanced Placement class passed, and degree earned.

Are our students progressing and achieving academically?

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Over the past three years, our teachers have embraced the Common Core State Standards, which enhance rigor and critical thinking in the classroom and help ensure that all students gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in college and fulfill their dreams. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) provides our teachers with measures of achievement that contribute to a holistic view of individual student progress toward college- and careerreadiness.
