OBSERVE COURT CASES
If you ' re thinking of a future in law, there’s no better way to get inspired than by observing real court cases Spend a day or morning at your local Magistrates’ (Wimbledon) or Crown Court (Kingston) and see justice in action watch lawyers argue cases, judges deliver rulings, and gain insights textbooks can’t teach
Practical Tips:
Go with a friend or family member
You will need to go through a security check on entry
Ask court staff about the different cases going on in the courts
Magistrate courts usually have different courts focusing on specific cases (Traffic, Remands, Sentencing, Guilty at Plea court) and the advantage is you can often see different cases from start to finish whereas at a CC you may arrive in the middle of a case that lasts for weeks
DESIGN, ENGINEERING & MAKING
Students looking to study Engineering will typically choose from among: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Aeronautical Engineering; the most popular and with an integrated placement even better However, some do more research and realise that going niche might just put you ahead when it comes to graduate recruitment. You can enter a course that will have employers keen to offer you a job at the end or decide to branch out into another area of engineering. Here are some examples of niche engineering degrees worthy of scrutiny:
MARINE ENGINEERING
Maritime engineering | University of Southampton
NAVAL ARCHITECTURE AND
MARINE ENGINEERING
Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
MEng | Undergraduate | Newcastle University
BIOCHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Biochemical Engineering - UCL
NUCLEAR ENGINEERING
Nuclear Engineering BEng Hons (H820) - Lancaster University

JOUNALISM - YOUNG REPORTER SCHEME
Mr Fitzgerald will be launching the scheme with students in Fourth, Fifth Year & Sixth Form in September. Lauch date: September.
Find out more here:
https://www youtube com/watch?v=tuLa9g5Tg64
Young Reporter Scheme | Student Journalism Courses | UK
The scheme runs from September through to April, with students signing up to write 8 articles during the 8 month period. You are given deadlines to work to and categories to write within and all of your articles are published on the Newsquest Media online newspapers. After you sign up you will attend your first mentoring session, which Mr Fitzgerald will organise one lunchtime
How does it work?
You can write about whatever interests you, providing you stay away from anything that could cause offence, or anything with a police presence attached to it. During the scheme, students are offered various press events, for which they can compete If you are doing DofE, you can use The Young Reporter Scheme as your skillset At the end of the scheme there is a competition, where students submit their three chosen articles to be judged against other students in their age group There is an Awards Ceremony at the end of June, where the winners are then publicly announced for that year. The two Top Reporters of each year group also go on to become the faces of the scheme for the following year Whether you win a prize at the end or not, this scheme is a great addition to UCAS applications or to put on a CV.

CYBERSECURITY
UWE Bristol and the University of Warwick both top picks for Cybersecurity degrees, but with distinct strengths. UWE focuses on practical, hands-on learning with strong industry links and a Gold Award from the UK’s NCSC, making it ideal for students seeking real-world experience and employability. In contrast, Warwick delivers a research-driven, technically rigorous programme through WMG, with NCSC certification and BCS accreditation, suited for those aiming for deep theoretical knowledge and innovation. UWE is best for applied skills and placements, while Warwick excels in academic depth and cutting-edge research. VIRTUAL WORK EXPERIENCE & CAREER TASTER SESSIONS
Virtual work experience and career taster opportunities have seen enormous growth from the start of the pandemic with more opportunities now easily accessible online.
We realise that many of you may be able to secure an in-person placement through family contacts and we would encourage you to explore setting up work experience opportunities through your networks during the summer holidays. Placements during holiday periods do not require school paperwork, however the school is still able to provide supporting letters and assistance with CV writing for any applications.
