Older persons INTERNATIONAL DAY OF 1

Kingston is thrilled to see the return of the Kingston Senior’s Festival in 2022, following two years of cancellations due to COVID-19. We are looking forward to joining together once again to celebrate together and have fun. Kingston’s Senior’s Festival is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your community, meet new people and above all, celebrate an entire month dedicated to our older population. We have worked with local community groups and Senior’s clubs to put together a calendar of exciting activities for everyone to enjoy. There are plenty of free and lowcost events and workshops to participate in which have been especially designed for older people. You can learn new skills, listen to music, participate in a workshop, make new connections and most importantly, have fun.

Cr Steve Staikos Mayor, City of Kingston THE CITY OF KINGSTON IS PROUD TO PRESENT KINGSTON’S SENIORS FESTIVAL WITH A WIDE RANGE OF IN-PERSON EVENTS THIS OCTOBER.

1 OCTOBER IS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS (IDOP). The day highlights the important contributions that older people make to society. It also raises awareness of ageing in today’s world including the impact of an ageing population and the need to ensure that people can grow old with dignity while participating in society. This year’s theme is ‘The Resilience and Participation of Older Women’ focusing on the significant role older women play in navigating challenges and contributing to their solutions. There is strong evidence about the importance of social connections and improvements in everyone’s wellbeing. The Ageing Well in Victoria 2022 report highlights that older people who are socially engaged are happier and healthier than those who are socially isolated. That’s a perfect reason for everyone to participate in the many events listed in this year’s Seniors Festival.

Volunteering

Over lunch we have a chat and often discuss some of the difficulties people live with, hoping we have brightened up their day with a smile and a kind word. How does volunteering make you feel? We appreciate having some structure in our retired week. It has helped with our transition to retirement and keeps us mentally active. What would you say to people volunteering?considering

Peter and Suzy have been volunteering for the Kingston Delivered Meals program for over 15 years. They were interviewed earlier this year. What does a typical day volunteering look like? We are retirees so getting up one hour earlier than is usual is the first step. We move the golf clubs and firewood collection out of the car and give it a quick clean. Then it’s off to the Meals kitchen to pick up the meals for our shift. We are generally on our way home by lunch time and then rewarding ourselves with lunch out. What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

STORMS CAN THROUGHOUTOCCURTHEYEAR AND HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO PROPERTY AND PLACE PEOPLE IN DANGER. Storms include strong winds, flash flooding, thunder and lightning, heavy rain, and Accordinghailstones.to the Victorian State Emergency Service (SES), each year there are 20,000 requests for assistance because of storms. Much of the damage has been the result of tree branches, outdoor furniture and other loose items becoming projectiles during the storm, as well as flooding due to blocked drains and damaged cars parked under falling trees. It’s important to be aware of the dangers of severe weather and learn some simple ways you can take responsibility for your own safety and that of your property. Early preparation is the best defence against storms.

PREPARING FOR Extreme Weather: storms

You may lose services including power, water, sewerage and gas. Ensure you have a torch and your phone is fully charged before the storm hits. Ensure that everyone knows where and how to turn off the mains power, water and gas in case of an emergency. Stay informed and talk with neighbours, friends and family about how you can help each other.

AFTER A STORM

Call your insurance company to organise any insurance matters and remember to take photos of the damage.

For life threatening emergencies, call Triple Zero ( 000). For emergency assistance from the State Emergency Service (SES), call 132 500

Monitor weather warnings at the Bureau of Meteorology website bom.gov.au

Park your car undercover and away from trees.

When cleaning up after a storm, consider your health and safety. Do not enter damaged or flooded buildings until authorities advise it is safe to do so. Wear protective clothing while cleaning up, such as gloves.

• There is damage to your roof or it is leaking significantly

Stay away from fallen powerlines – always assume they are live. Drive slowly and never drive through floodwater.

BEFORE A STORM

DURING THE STORM

Check your home and property for damage. Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen or damaged trees.

AND WEBSITES

Only call the SES seeking emergency help in a flood or storm because:

If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and Duringfloodwater.astorm, it is important to stay informed. Monitor weather warnings and forecasts at the Bureau of Meteorology website and warnings through the Vic Emergency website. Remember that electricity, phone and internet may not be available in a severe storm so keep a battery radio in your home.

• A tree or large branch has fallen and is preventing you from entering or leaving your home

• A tree has fallen and caused structural damage to your home or vehicle

Sources: Information for ‘Preparing for Extreme Weather – Storms’ was adapted from the websites listed below. Please see these websites for additional information: • Victorian State Emergency Services www.ses.vic.gov.au/plan-and-stay-safe/emergencies/storm • Are you prepared for an emergency? www.emergencyprepare.com.au 23

Stay indoors and away from windows. Bring pets inside.

• Your property is flooded or about to flood Monitor warnings at the Victorian Emergency website emergency.vic.gov.au

Remember that electricity, gas and water supplies may be disrupted. If your property has been damaged, have all utilities checked and tested by a licenced technician before you use them.

IMPORTANT NUMBERS

If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from drains, gutters, creeks and waterways. If outside, shelter but never seek shelter under a tree.

Clean your gutters, downpipes and drains to ensure they are not blocked. Ensure that outside furniture and outdoor items are safely secured. Avoid driving during the storm.

18 can join a shed, most members proudly fall into the Seniors category, bringing with them a lifetime of skills and stories to share.

Despite what you may have been led to believe, Men’s Sheds are not just for those interested in drills, lathes and power tools. Sheds are also for those who may want to jam along with fellow musos, take the bike out for a spin, teach others what they already know, become a pool shark, master a pottery wheel, lower their golfing handicap or just simply get out of the house. Along with possum boxes and nested tables, they develop friendships, confidence, new skills, improved health and laughter. Lots of laughter.

The Victorian Men’s Shed Association recently reported the 100th birthday celebration of an active shedder from Phillip Island, proving that age should be no barrier to joining a shed that offers you the things you like to do, or want to learn. And if they don’t currently offer an activity that interests you, just drop them a line to ask them if they would!

Residents are lucky to have four independently managed sheds operating within Kingston, and another just on its northern border. They offer something for everyone, are good for you, are local and they are open almost every week of the Pleaseyear.see the map for your local Men’s Shed.
