Kingston Arts celebrates the auspicious 50th anniversary of the famous Wurlitzer with a series of special events. The ever-popular Morning Melodies will return to Kingston City Hall (see pages 12-13), and classic comedy and horror movies will be accompanied live by the Wurlitzer. After all, that’s what it was made for! Read on for full details.

CLASSIC MOVIE SCREENINGS WITH LIVE WURLITZER SATURDAY 9 MAY: The Prophetic Genius of Charlie Chaplin 1pm The Adventurer & The Immigrant Two of Chaplin’s funniest and most socially relevant short films, screened with live Wurlitzer score. The Adventurer features one of the funniest chase scenes in cinematic history, while The Immigrant is as poignant as it is humorous in its depiction of the pitfalls of finding a place in a new world. Screened with live Wurlitzer scores! (48 mins) 2.15pm The Great Dictator Made in response to the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany, The Great Dictator was Chaplin’s first-ever ‘talkie’ and his most commercially successful film. With the rise of populism across the world today, it’s as topical as it was when it was released in 1940. (125 mins) Prizes for the best Charlie Chaplin costume! FRIDAY 13 NOVEMBER: The Horror, the Horror! 7.30pm Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror The original and best vampire movie of all time, F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu set the template for all horror films with its eerie atmosphere and truly terrifying vampire-villain. Screened with live Wurlitzer score! (90 mins) 9.15pm The Shining Arguably the scariest movie ever made, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is the perfect film for a late-Halloween/Friday the 13th screening. With a few familiar, freaky characters lurking in the shadows at Kingston City Hall, it will be scarier than ever. If you’re lucky, maybe Jack will buy you a drink at the bar? (145 mins) Please note, entry for each program includes all films screened on that date.
