Elementary Design Academy AGES 6 THROUGH 8

Daily field trips, creative engineering projects and studio art classes at the M.F.A. will be a summer that you’ll never forget! During each one-week thematic session, students apply their problem-solving skills, explore the city around them and make friends through fun, hands-on activities. Students will turn Boston into their learning lab and use their unique experiences to inspire exciting projects. Design Academy’s primary focus is to enhance your child’s engineering and design skills with fun, collaborative projects.O N A C T I V I T I E S . Elementary Weeks 1-3 AGES 6 THROUGH 8

W E E K 1 (JUNE 27 - JULY 1): YOUNG BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERS

Students apply the engineering design process as they explore the variations in human feet and use the information to make recommendations about sneaker design. After evaluating the properties of different building materials, students design a knee brace that will restore the range of motion to a model of an injured knee. W E E K 2 (JULY 5 - JULY 8): YOUNG GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS

Digging into the role of geotechnical engineers, students must select a safe, flood-proof and erosion-proof location for a new TarPul. Working with a model riverbank, students study soil properties and examine maps to assess the potential for erosion at different sites along the river. Note: Due to Independence Day, this four-day session will be pro-rated. W E E K 3 (JULY 11 - JULY 15): YOUNG MATERIALS ENGINEERS

Students will think like materials engineers as they imagine themselves as archeologists tasked by a museum to replicate a petroglyph. To succeed at this challenge, students must analyze the properties of rocks and human-made materials and reflect on how processing affects these materials.

Elementary Weeks 4-6 AGES 6 THROUGH 8

W E E K 4 (JULY 18 - JULY 22): YOUNG CHEMICAL ENGINEERS

The activities in this week reinforce the science concepts “solid” and “liquid” as students explore the properties of different materials—and the properties of mixtures of materials. The final engineering design challenge? Design a process for making high-quality playdough! W E E K 5 (JULY 25 - JULY 29): YOUNG ACOUSTICAL ENGINEERS

This unit brings new excitement to the study of sound. Hands-on activities lead students to explore the properties of volume and pitch, investigate ways to damp sound and develop their own novel way to represent the key elements of sound. W E E K 6 (AUGUST 1 - AUGUST 5): YOUNG ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS

Students will explore the properties of conductors and insulators, schematic diagrams and circuits with a final engineering design challenge to plan, create and improve their own alarm circuit. At the MFA, they will examine abstract expressionism and create vibrant artwork that reflects their understanding of electricity.

Kingsley Leadership AGES 8 THROUGH 11

A new one-week program that teaches leadership and collaboration through technology, mindfulness and the creative arts. Kingsley partners with KidPowerment to help students better understand leadership skills that will serve them over a lifetime: self-advocacy, negotiation, compromise, personal responsibility and conflict-resolution. Students will also participate in art and technology classes to create expressive responses and proactive messaging to reflect what they have learned about themselves and the needs of our community. Early Arrival and Extended Day options available upon request. Please contact Beau Kenyon (bkenyon@kingsley.org).
