THE KING JOHN SCHOOL50 March 2013 THE KING JOHN NEWSLETTER—No
NEWSLETTER No: 50 - March 2013 The King John School 2013 Ski Trip to Courmayeur Italy We left for Courmayeur on Saturday 16th February to begin what turned out to be an amazing week. We arrived in Courmayeur at the Hotel Telecabine with a coach of smiling students. It was a very convenient 10 minute walk to the gondola which took us up to the mountain. The hotel was really nice as were the rooms. Each day the hotel provided us with breakfast and dinner which consisted of a 3 course meal every day. The kitchen staff, led by Antonio, were very polite and did an amazing job with the meals. Every day we went up to the mountains, collected our skis and poles and then headed off in our groups for a day of skiing. Skiing started at 9.30 and finished at 2.30. After a day of skiing, we would make our way back to the hotel to get ready for dinner and our evening activity. On day one we had a quiz led by our rep Nick which was very funny. Day two involved us going to a pizza restaurant where we experienced Italian pizza at its best, Wednesday saw us go bum boarding. This was one of the funniest activities. Thursday’s activity was ice skating – this seemed to prove quite an obstacle for a few of us and involved a lot of falling over, however all in all it was a fantastic evening. It got to Friday and it was time for the presentation evening; each instructor gave out a certificate and badge to each of the students in their group. A couple of afternoons after skiing we went straight into town from the slopes. The town was very pretty with its cobbled streets and old style buildings. I think I can speak on behalf of all the students when I say that it was an amazing week and we didn’t want to come home. On the coach home a number of awards were given out by Mr Webb; these included skier of the week nominated by the instructors, tourist of the week, best beginner, best advanced skier and more. The whole area was incredible and we were very lucky to have had the opportunity to spend the week there. I’m sure I’m not the only one who now has the skiing ‘bug’. I would highly recommend it!!
Duke of Edinburgh Bronze 2013 Presentation Evening On Tuesday the 5th December the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards evening was held. For yet another year running all students completed and achieved the award! The evening was a great chance to celebrate the success of all the students and what they had achieved to reach their goal. Congratulations to all the students involved. It is an absolutely fantastic achievement and shows a high level of determination and motivation. This year’s group were particularly up against it as their qualifying expedition had some terrible weather conditions. Even though it was July, it did not stop raining for the whole of the weekend!
