king john dance show 2015 On the 3rd and 4th February, over 130 students participated in the annual King John Dance Show. The dancers showcased a variety of styles including: Street, Lyrical, Contemporary and Disco. The sell-out show was a great success and the students’ hard work paid off resulting in another fantastic production. The KJS dancers range from Years 7-8 extra curriculum dance clubs, GCSE Dance and Performing Arts. Many of the performers sacrificed their own time at lunch and after school to perfect their dances and worked extremely hard to help choreograph and include their ideas into this year’s show. Thank you to all the students and staff involved in this year’s show. I am delighted that our new Humanities Block opened on time and now houses 8 wonderful new classrooms which both students and staff are delighted with. There are conference facilities as well as a new reception area which visitors, entering by way of Benfleet Road, are asked to report to. Work has now started on our new Assembly Hall, which is planned to open in September. This is the first building project that has been undertaken in the middle of the school site and we will be doing everything we can to avoid any disruption to our students’ learning and to ensure their safety at all times. The school always welcomes feedback from parents whether positive or negative. You have told us in the past that communication is not as good as it might be. We have listened to you and I hope that parents have found the regular newsletter useful as a reminder of forthcoming events and to keep you up to date with important issues which may affect your child. We have ensured that where we do not hold a current email address a copy of the newsletter is sent by post. It has been a busy academic half term with Years 11, 12 and 13 sitting their pre-public exams in preparation for the real thing in the summer term. The school has put in place a host of revision sessions, particularly for Year 11 students, and parents should look out for the monthly Raising Achievement newsletter. I would urge parents to ensure that their child takes full advantage of the revision sessions on offer. Hard work now will reap rewards for the future. This half term our Creative & Performing Arts faculty and students have been busy with the Dance show and BTEC show in addition to other trips and visits. Over half term our annual ski trip will be visiting Italy and Year 9 and 10 students studying Spanish will be visiting Salamanca. Whatever you have planned for this half term I hope you all have a wonderful time.

SCHOOL NEWS Rights respecting school

rollacity

The UNICEF UK Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. The RRSA seeks to put the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s ethos and culture to improve well-being and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. A rights respecting school is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted. Young people and the school community learn about children’s rights by putting them into practice every day. We are a level one Rights Respecting School and are including rights in ‘Thought for the Week’ as well as in lessons wherever appropriate. We feel it is important that all members of the school community know their rights. However, it is equally as important that we ensure that others are getting access to their rights. Ways that students can ensure others are getting access to their rights: • Behave well in lessons so that everyone can learn • Look after each other to ensure that everyone can be safe e.g. report bullying • Put rubbish in the bin to ensure we have a clean environment • Take part in charity events to help those less fortunate to access their rights

It’s nearly that time of year again, the annual Year 7 trip to RollaCity! On 10th March, the students will have the chance to enjoy an evening of skating. We look forward to many laughs and smiles as we get to have some fun with the entire year group! Here’s what students thought of last year’s event: Tara Ogunbule said “I thought that RollaCity was AWESOME! I enjoyed every minute of it.” Elle-Mai Whieldon said “We all went to RollaCity for a good laugh and to have fun. We did lots of skating and by the end of it we were really tired. Some of the teachers skated too including Miss Coulman and Mrs Brown. When we entered the Rolla rink everyone got extremely excited. We all had food from the awesome food area. I think that every single child enjoyed themselves. It was brilliant to be able to go with my friends as I have so much fun with them.”

Student voice: term 1 feedback MEETING 1: Speakers School Council Awards: We decided to attend this next year. Rights Respecting School: Discussed during tutor times. Victimisation - an Essex Youth perspective: Students were encouraged to do a survey online. Option to wear ties: Discussed changes to uniform. MEETING 2: Assembly feedback or tutor time feedback: Decided that feedback would be in tutor times after each term. Jack Petchey nominations by students: Vote during committee meeting and tutor time. Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge: Decided that students and teachers should have a choice about which Year 10 students would enter.

year 7 charity update Year 7 has chosen the charity, Little Havens as their charity for which they will raise as much as they can. To support Little Havens, each Thursday is ‘Thoughtful Thursday’ and each tutor group takes a turn in having a stall at lunch time. 7-02 for example, raised £19 last week by holding a table top sale and asking students to put loose change in a bucket. Mya Pandya and Sophie Barsby both from 7-02 said “As a class we believe that charity is important because the money we raise helps to buy things that maybe they couldn’t afford. It is also a good thing to think about other people who are less fortunate.”

YEAR 8 Good luck to...

year 9 charity update

Jack Hogarth, has been given the opportunity to attend trials for Essex Rugby. The county club trials new players for the U13 team every year with the view to take the top players on for a 3 year programme, preparing them for the U16 grading process. Successful players will train with the club once a month alongside playing for their usual club. Watch out Jackson Wray – we may have a new rugby superstar in the midst!

Well done to Ella Merry and Mary Payne. The girls raised a fantastic £266.54 for the Motor Neurone Disease Society by collecting outside of the Southend Odeon cinema on the release date of the new Stephen Hawkins movie, The Theory of Everything.

Year 9 & 10 Photography Trip to Colchester Zoo

Rachel Byrne is competing in the upcoming Essex championships in dance later this month. This will prove to be an important event - if she wins she will qualify for the Europeans. Best of luck Rachel!

The GCSE Year 9 Photography students and Year 9/10 Art and Photography students took a trip to Colchester Zoo in January to prepare them for a wildlife project this term. It was their first opportunity to go out with set photographic tasks using the DSLR cameras.

Erin Lee is through to round 2, the second weekend of Essex County swimming championships. Well done and good luck to Erin!

watch this space... Eleanor Whittaker has set up a YouTube channel called Whittaker Wednesdays which has apparently been popular with students. She does random videos and challenges. Her most popular video was ‘Best Friend tag’, with 196 views! Sonny Crane has also set up a YouTube channel called CRANOCAST9, where he uploads short football and gaming videos. He even set up a competition for viewers to build him a Minecraft base that he would like to live in. The prize was a football.

“On Thursday 8th January the Year 9 and 10 students went on a trip in the typical British rainy weather to Colchester Zoo. All hearts were set on trying to capture the best photo.

The day started on a bus journey full of tired teens at 8.30am, faces started to change once the packets of sweets were opened. As we reached the zoo the sun had not yet come out and the screams of girls worrying about their hair getting wet and their make up running got louder as we made our way to the entrance in the pouring rain.

Stacey Frost in tutor 8-05 spends her spare time taking part in Agility training and competitions, here’s what she has to say about this fun and exciting pastime: “The two dogs that I run at Agility are both 4 years old. Roux (Black) is a Patterdale Terrier, she is grade 7 and an amazing Agility dog but can be a bit slow at times. Herbie (ginger) is a Jack Russell terrier cross Poodle, he is grade 2 and sometimes very scatty. Most of the time, Herbie works really hard and listens so well, however, he does have a tendency to behave in the opposite way and thinks he knows best!

We then separated into our groups to take some photographs of the animals. I think the most exciting part was seeing the lions, they were unbelievably close to us and it was magical to be that close to such an animal. Soon after we got to meet and feed the giraffes and elephants. The elephants were funny because when we fed them it felt like a hoover as they scoffed up the fruit. Not only did we get to take amazing photographs using the DSLR cameras but we were also able to hold and learn about some of the different animals. Luckily the rain stopped and we were able to enjoy the rest of the day at the zoo allowing us to get the shots we needed for our wildlife poster project.”

Both dogs are very experienced in Agility and have been to the UKA grand finals and Discover Dogs with my mum and her partner. I have been to OJAC (Open Junior Agility Championships) with Agility dogs that I no longer run with anymore as I have been given my two amazing dogs, Roux and Herbie. I am currently in training for OJAC next year and have competed in many other shows.” STACEY FROST, 8-05

YEAR 10

YEAR 1 1

A huge well done to all the Year 11 students who have now finished their pre public exams. They all conducted themselves brilliantly. I hope that you received all you were wishing for in your results on 27th January.

GCSE Mock Unit 1 Project- Self

Year 10 Photography students started the first unit of their mock exam last term focusing on the theme ‘Self’ all in preparation of their exam taking place in Year 11. There were some fantastic final outcomes which gives us great confidence for next year, well done students!

Thank you to all parents who attended the Parents Evening on 29th January, which was a great opportunity to check their progress at this crucial stage.

Charlotte Robinson, 10-08 shares her veiw on the project: During the theme ‘Self’ we were given many tasks such as creating mood boards and mind maps, which were all based around what we had chosen to do. We also had to carry out 3 different photo shoots, the first was during the holidays to try and give us a rough idea of what we would like to do for our topic. The second was to experiment with our chosen ideas and work with them through Photoshop. The final shoot was for our final pieces, which we have all successfully completed and are now getting ready to be marked. Throughout the topic we had to research certain photographers related to our themes. Suren Manvelyan was my chosen photographer as I chose the topic of eyes and got to use the new macro lens, which helps you zoom right in close to the eye so you can see all the details. For me, this topic was very interesting as I got to take photographs and use Photoshop to give them a professional finish. This project was a lot of hard work but of course, it all pays off once you have finished and are able to look back and notice the time and effort you have put into it. This assignment has been useful as I also take GCSE Media and so I have been able to develop my understanding and knowledge of how to use this software. Throughout this unit I have learnt about my strengths in this field and how to cope with deadlines. I realised that photography is more than just taking a photo and that you have to work much quicker than people think. Photography is much more complex than I first imagined, but this only adds to the fun and the creative process. This last term has helped me prepare for my exam in more ways than one, an example being to recognise how hard you have to work to achieve the grade you want. year 11 charity update Elizabeth Loury Cancer Ward Fundraiser In the lead up to Christmas, students in 11-10 decided to organise a raffle to raise money for their chosen charity. This charity is close to the hearts of the tutor group and they each donated money towards prizes. A special thanks to Matilda Neil who donated our star prize, FIFA 15! Thanks also to the efforts of those who sold over 600 tickets during break and lunchtimes; the total raised was £142. student leaders Year 10 is a very important and significant year. Students continue with their Key Stage 4 courses and are given the opportunity, through a number of exciting schemes and programmes, to further gain skills and qualities that are valued by sixth form, colleges, universities and the work place. In Year 10 all students have an excellent opportunity to fully establish themselves and progress within their chosen Key Stage 4 courses and career pathways. They also have the opportunity to take part in exciting and excellent initiatives to help to continue to develop key skills including communication, listening and problem solving. They can do this through various schemes including the established Peer Active Listener (PAL) initiative and the new Student Leader initiative. The new Student Leader role has been put in place to help support current Year 11 students in their role as prefects by completing lunch time duties. Student leaders have to set the standard and be a positive role model to other students and take responsibility for the well-being and environment of the school. Grace Smith explains that being a Student Leader and helping at lunchtimes is a great opportunity to set positive examples to the younger students. Joe Greenwood said he enjoys the responsibility he has been given as a Student Leader. There were nearly one hundred and fifty applications for the role of Student Leader. Applications were of an excellent standard and reading through them has demonstrated what an excellent year group year 10 is. The list of student leaders is available to view on the VLE.

UCAS: Still interested?

Applications are now open for academic year 2015/16. If Year 13 students are starting a new course at university or college in 2015 they can apply online now for student finance. Parents can also support a student's application for full-time finance.

If Year 13 students did not meet the main application deadline on 15 January, they can still apply for many courses for 2015/16 or 2016/17 where students are considering a ‘gap year’. UCAS recommend students ask the universities whether they have vacancies first – especially for courses with a 15th October deadline, as it’s unusual for them to consider late applications due to the competitive nature of these courses.

Year 13 students who have submitted UCAS applications will need to reply to their offers when their last decision comes in. UCAS will send an email or a letter advising them about replying. • •

Students go to ‘Track’ to make their replies. They will have a deadline shown in ‘Track’ to do this by - how much time they have depends on the time of year, varying from one to five weeks.

30th June, 18:00 (UK time) – the final deadline for late applications with course choices 20th September, 18:00 (UK time) – it’s still okay to apply by this date, but instead of choosing courses, students will be entered into ‘Clearing’ – the process universities and colleges use to fill any places they still have on their courses

sixth form music show: kjs live lounge The Year 13 BTEC Music class had to create and perform a show entirely by themselves. This involved booking a venue and raising money to fund the show; the process was over a 5 month period and took a lot of dedication and organisation to create a memorable performance.

The show took place on 22nd January 2015 at the Hadleigh Baptist Church. A range of songs were performed over the 2 hours and judging by the audience reaction a successful performance was achieved. The class raised over £300 and gave the church a generous donation. The rest of the money will be spent on more music equipment for the school. A massive thank you to everyone involved including Miss Chapman, Miss Ware and Mr Quick. Photos will be featured in the next editions of the Parent Newsletter.

Employability for Life Charter

All Year 12 Students have been offered work experience in the summer term from 29th June – 10th July 2015. The deadline date for forms is Friday, 6th March 2015.

All Year 11 tutor groups have now had a tutor session with Mrs Jeffery and are encouraged to attend lunch time workshops on a Tuesday and Wednesday in UD8. EFL portfolios must be completed by the end of February 2015 in order for them to be moderated in early March.

JACK PETCHEY NOMINATION

Poppy Appeal

We nominate Carol Woodhouse for her outstanding contribution to Design and Technology, her support for the whole school and the wider community.

The school raised £327 through sales of poppies. Well done to all of those who bought a poppy at school and thank you especially to Jodie Purser, Grace White, Hannah Brown and Ellie Deagan in year 12 who helped to sell the poppies.

Carol joined the King John School in 1989 as Head of Food, Textiles and Child Development. Within 3 years she had improved the department’s GCSE results and still today they are at the top of the school results. Carol also became Head of the Graduate Trainee Programme (GTP) in the school and began to be involved in whole school Performance Management (PM). She relinquished her role as Head of Design and Technology to focus on her whole school roles, which included GTP, whole school training and leading PM (though she continued as Head of Food, maintaining the success of the Food department). Carol worked with Dr Margaret Wilson and Canterbury Christchurch University to run a school based MA in Leadership and Management of Learning, which she herself completed in 2001 achieving a Distinction. She has recently led a course for primary and secondary teachers in Outstanding Teaching.

The students are keen to think of new ways to promote and collect funds for their charities. If you would like to be involved, please speak to Mr. Webb. For year group charity updates, please see the year group news sections.

Carol is an inspirational teacher to work with. She has a clear vision of the education she wants her students to receive. The hard work she puts into this vision leads to a high level of consistency in her teaching and a quality of teaching that few can match but all aspire to. As a result the students taught by Carol experience a degree of support that leads to exceptional progress and excellent outcomes and results. This summer one of her students made 6 levels of progress and is currently studying at Westminster Catering College.

The School has often looked to Carol to share her good practice and attention to the progress of others. Carol’s positive influence has impacted upon colleagues and students alike. In particularly, Mrs. Linda Jeffery has benefited from Carol’s support as a colleague across many years through coaching and guidance; this has enabled her to work successfully with the issues that arise from day to day school life.

Carol has played a key role in the development of trainee teachers as well as those in the early years of their career and more experienced staff. The training and support Carol provides is always purposeful, practical and leads to real improvements in classrooms. She happily gives her time and expertise to facilitate the advancement in teaching which has contributed greatly to the school’s recent outstanding grade from OFSTED. As well as aiding the crucial progression in teaching here at the King John School, Carol has worked with teachers from other schools in the local area to help them grow into their teaching roles, enhancing their skills to allow for outstanding teaching and learning.

Carol has real impact in every area of school life she is involved in. This comes from the principled approach she brings to her work in never accepting anything less than her best. It is her consistency in delivering this over a long period of time that makes her unique and so valued by students and staff.

futurelearn.com Students in Year 12 have been developing key cross curricular qualities as a learner and young adult to help prepare them for further education and/or employment. This half term, the tutor time and learning and teaching focus was on developing the skill of independence and students were encouraged to log on to www.futurelearn.com. The website is a great (free) resource to keep up-to-date on current topics. Students selected a topic which interests them and then took part in online sessions linked to this over a number of weeks. It is great to use on C.Vs for students to show that you have an up-to-date knowledge of your chosen field of interest and may also be a useful point of interest to discuss in potential university/job interviews.

Our Spanish and French assistants are available to help you each Tuesday. Drop in if you need any support with homework, coursework or just to find out about something French (UC3) or Spanish(UC10)

SPORTS NEWS u14 netball

drama star this half term...Isabel lee, 7-12 Isabel is a committed Drama student spending her Saturdays developing her drama skills and rehearsing for a variety of shows at The London School of Musical Theatre in Central London. Isabel has just finished performing in a Christmas show and is about to prepare for a Spring review performance. Not only does Isabel spend extra time developing her drama skills on Saturdays but she has just started attending LAMDA sessions at The King John Academy of Arts on Wednesday evenings. Isabel - You are a star!

Sixth Form Drama Trip William Shakespeare’s Othello at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith At the beginning of the month, the Drama department arranged a trip to see a matinée performance of Shakespeare’s classic play Othello, at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith. Students were required to write a review of a piece of live theatre. The play was a fantastic opportunity to see a modern, physical theatre performance by the highly acclaimed theatre company, Frantic Assembly.

On Saturday 31st January the Under 14 netball team took part in the East Region tournament played at Hassenbrook School. It was a tense event but all girls played brilliantly, even with the onset of freezing cold conditions including snow. Unfortunately, the team narrowly missed getting through to the next level by only a few points. We’re sure that the girls will continue to go from strength to strength throughout the year to beat off the competition in the next tournament. “I am incredibly proud of all of them, they played brilliantly. The play is an electrifying take on Shakespeare’s most brutal and gripping thriller-tragedy of paranoia, suspicion and murder. Othello’s passionate affair with Desdemona leaves him open to jealousy and attack – with devastating consequences. Reviews and photos of the trip will be featured in the next issue of the Parent Newsletter.

Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts comes to The King John School On Tuesday 10th February, King John Drama students took part in a very exciting opportunity. RADA graduates led our students in a dramatic workshop and careers talk about further dramatic education and the performing arts industry. The event was designed specifically for our students and the day was highly beneficial. King John students were not only inspired but clearly informed of their future choices. We would like to thank RADA for offering this workshop to our students free of charge. MS KITSIOU

Peter pan On Tuesday 16th December the Drama department took 100 year 7s to watch a matinée performance of Peter Pan at the Cliffs Pavilion. They were very excited on the way to the theatre, practising their audience participation before we left (“oh yes we did!”).

On Saturday 31st January, the Year 9 basketball team played a competitive match against Welsh speaking touring team, Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, who travelled from South Wales for the home game. The match was tense but played in the right spirit with King John coming out victorious at 54-43. “I would like to thank the Welsh team and their teacher, Mr Wiggins for playing us and I look forward to a return match at some point.” MR SELBY-KNIGHT, P.E

We really enjoyed looking after Mrs Smee’s cupcakes, and thought the performance by Christopher Biggins, not to mention the fantastic costumes, was amazing. We loved the “Twelve Days of Christmas” song, and were very impressed with the whole casts’ performance including one of our very own Year 9 students, Michael Bowyer! Students were glad that Mr Biggins spent his birthday performing for them, and were very enthralled by David Hasselhoff’s performance. Sophie Spicer in 7-07 very much enjoyed going up on stage in front of almost 2000 people, to play the tambourine. Good on you Sophie! The staff that accompanied the trip were so impressed with every single child’s behaviour, and said they were a delight to take. Thank you to everyone involved. MRS HOMER

essex cup basketball results Tuesday 3rd February saw two of the King John basketball teams take part in the Essex Basketball Cup. Year 9 played against St. Martins in the U14 Essex Cup and won 70-60. The senior team were also successful against Great Baddow at 50-47. Well done to both teams who are through to the semi-finals of the Essex Cup.
