Do you think educational qualification is must for every minister? Afzal Hussain PR Executive Yes, absolutely. The person who is going to represent our constituency should be educated and should have qualification which is required to sit and do justice to the post. Arun Kumar Journalist No. Many MPs and MLAs belong to the rural belt and they cannot even write their names. But they are actively participating in the development work for their constituencies, so I think there should be no requirement of education in India for ministers. Tahir Beig Cameraman NO. If we go back into Indian history, there were politicians who were sitting in Delhi having good qualification. But many others have not passed HSC and yet are playing active role in Indian politics, so I think educational qualification is not a must for every minister. Sanjay Mishra Senior Journalist YES. India is a developing country, and now we are representing our self as a strong country. If our minister does not having the qualification required for their position, it will be shameful for our nation. Rizwan Ansari Businessman YES, None of the political party are looking for qualification of their candidates. They are just giving them tickets on the basis of their hold among the voters. Qualification is a must for every politician because they are representatives of one particular constituency which is the part of the nation. The trend of shooting selfie videos of intimate moments is increasing nowadays with worrying consequences

By Santia Dudi

Youtube video of a 26-yearold software engineer in the city, stripping on camera in response to a request from an unknown woman on Facebook, with unfortunate consequences, has left Mumbai both shocked and amused, and also wondering why people acede to such requests in the first place. Reported yesterday, the engineer was enticed into doffing his clothes by a Facebook "friend". She then proceeded to upload the video and demanded money to remove it. This incident has once again raised questions relating to sexual mores and practices, attitudes and mindsets in India against the backdrop of the internet and social media. Videos of intimate moments of people going viral is not a new thing. What is surprising is that, despite knowing the possible embarassments and dangers of digital recording, many people are still comfortable shooting those private moments. The ADC spoke to several young people, aged between 21 and 25, to find out what they thought. Shooting intimate moments is one's personal decision. Noel (21), a copywriter in an ad agency, feels that if it's done with mutual consent, it's a private matter.. He says, "It can totally work for some people, and we can't look down on them. But if it's not done with consent, it's illegal and above all it's immoral." Neelima (21) finds such an act downright creepy. She says, "I am personally not in favour of such selfie videos. But they can go ahead and do whatever they like, provided the decision is mutual. That is important." Such selfie videos also act as a tool to take revenge in many cases.Seshadri Iyyer (22), feels that it's not correct to shoot such moments, as it's an extremely private

and relatives. As a result, I had to leave Hyderabad. My parents don't talk to me anymore and I can't face my relatives. Dr. Minnu R. Bhosle, Ph D. Consulting Psychotherapist and Counseller, feels that sexual repression in our society plays a great role in such acts. She says, "Any kind of repression finds an outlet. The same is the case with sexual repression and such acts are an outlet. Exhibition of intimate moments is not healthy." Dr Minnu further adds, "If one is taking such videos and keeping it for self, it's their personal matter. But the situation can go out of control and then there is the possibility that they are uploaded and even go viral. The victim of these viral intimate videos feels betrayed and violated. Certain things are best kept private." She strongly feels that taking selfie videos of intimate moments and then uploading them is actually a form of sexual violence. Akansha (22), a private sector employee, doesn't find it correct and safe at all. She says, "One should be far-sighted before indulging in such acts. Any kind of taping can easily go viral nowdays. Such private things should remain private only. I don't find this correct." Section 67 in The Information Technology Act, 2000 prescribes the punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form. According to the Act, publishing/transmitting of obscene material may lead to convicmatter. "Sometimes people take one such intimate video. The state government’s ambitious ‘cashless’ health scheme, the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana (RGJAY) to develop a healthcare system along the lines of United States, (as the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister late YSR Reddy also did) is struggling to survive, and so are thousands of patients who otherwise cannot afford complicated life-saving surgeries, discovers Vishnudas Sheshrao

HEALTH CAN WAIT SPECIAL REPORT

Rs.333 per family per year against an insurance cover of Rs.1.50 lakh to bag this tender, not realizing that it was under quoted and meant huge outgoing expense. Now this company has hired foreign returned post-graduate doctors as executive doctors to cross check the insurance claims.Every application that does not qualify on some technical ground or the other, saves National Insurance Company up to Rs.1.50 lakh.

Scope for discrimination

List of patients is growing According to the Health Department’s reports, an estimated 6,791 patients who were identified as authentic beneficiaries of the RGJAY scheme could not get their surgeries done due to multiple reasons, including reluctance on the part of private and government hospitals. Many patients have therefore been waiting for months for their turn for medical surgery at the few empaneled hospitals designated by the state government and incorporated under this scheme. However, the waiting list figures provided by the state health department is just the tip of iceberg as many tens of thousand of patients across the state have been making the rounds of district civil hospitals to enroll their names or to the tehsil offices to make corrections in ration cards and arranging of other documents. These patients are struggling at various levels of the scrutiny process and the state has no data on it.

Problems right from the start Within six months of this scheme being kick-started, several private hospitals which were enlisted as participants lost interest and are reluctant to conduct health camps and surgeries, as the insurance companies did not pay their bills for as long as four months after submission, which otherwise should have been done within 14 working days. Even further, the state government-owned district civil hospital and rural hospital authorities are not interested in this scheme. The original scheme, named Arogya Shri and initiated in Andhra Pradesh, gave incentives to doctors of civic hospitals for carrying out surgeries under the scheme. However, the Maharashtra government made no provision of any incentives for government doctors carrying out extra duties under RGJAY apart from their routine work. Consequently, organizing health camps, which is first step of this scheme, is doing well only on paper.

Poll strategy? On July 12, 2012, the state government initiated this scheme on a pilot basis in eight districts – Amravati, Dhule, Nanded, Gadchiroli, Mumbai and Mumbai suburbs, Raigad and Solapur. But it actually started only by November 2013, strategically just six months before the general parliamentary elections and exactly one year before the state assembly elections, with an aim to gain political mileage from the lower class whose income is below Rs.1 lakh per year. However, it did not take off as intended due to multiple reasons, including no incentive at government hospitals for doing the extra work and carrying out long and complicated surgeries, unattractive payment packages for surgery, unreasonable delays in payments from insurance companies, too many documents to be produced from the hospitals and the impractical attitude of senior state government officers sitting in their airconditioned offices in the state capital, Mumbai.

Sumit (6 years and three months old) a cardiac patient, son of Nilesh Kadam, resident of Wada in Satara district. His diagnostic tests had been done four months ago and he needs cardiac surgery. For the last five months, his father has been making the rounds of the local tehsil office and the RGJAY office to make the correct documentation. His application was not accepted because the local tehsildar wrote the date under his signature. RGJAY officials rejected the application stating that the date in the ration card should have been written at the top right hand corner of the page. clude every family member's name, or not renewed at all. On several occasions, insurance and consequently, medical treatment is denied to authentic beneficiaries only because the name of the patient was not visible enough or there was no date visible on the ration card, there was a difference in name or the spelling or ration card is not stamped and signed by issuing authority.

Flawed eligibility criteria

Those who are issued with ration card after April 2013 are not eligible for RGJAY, despite falling within the specified income group, as the state government had paid insurance premium to the insurance company on the data of ration card available as on April 1, 2013. According to officials, the state paid the premium for 29 million families of the state at Rs.333 per family per year. Every family would get cover of Rs.1.50 lakh and the facility This scheme is being popularised and promoted as ‘cashless will be applicable only with empanelled hospitals. There are medication’ in the slogans, announcing that the insurance total 475 empanelled hospitals (400 private and 75 governcompany will pay for bed charges, nursing and boarding, sur- ment hospitals) across the state. geons, anesthetists, medicals practitioners, consultants fees, blood, oxygen, OT charges, cost of surgical appliance, medical and drugs, X-ray, food and one time transport fare from home to hospitals as per tariff of State Transport (ST) Corpo- Some of the surgeries like hernia, vaginal or abdominal hysration. However, several diagnostic tests have not been in- terectomy, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, and discectomy cluded in the package and that is creating confusion between are conducted only at government hospitals. Consequently, the hospitals and the patients, with complaints and counter patients in remote area of Gadchiroli or Dhule have to travel all the way to either Nagpur or to Mumbai which is not feasicomplaints being filed. ble for them. Some of these surgeries which are life-saving and need to be carried out on an emergency basis become even more complicated due to long waiting list at the hospiIn about 45 days, this scheme will celebrate its second an- tals and the travel to big cities where food and accommodaniversary. However, the state could not issue the much-touted tion become unaffordable. Health Card to more than 35 to 40 per cent of the people who qualify for the scheme. Even these were issued in Mumbai and have still to cover the rest of Maharashtra. Even though the Ration card is declared as an option to the Health Card, The National Insurance Company, which is entrusted with the problems arise when the Ration card is not updated to in- the insurance of this scheme, ambitiously quoted a premium

Good scheme if correctly implemented

Not viable for some

Report card

Overambitious and impractical scheme?

These executive doctors, as third party auditors on behalf of the insurance company, have been denying claims on smallest of the small grounds like – concerned doctor did not hang stethoscope around his neck in the photograph, no video clip of the operation, no post surgery X-ray with visible stitches, or photograph of the doctor or hospital authorities giving bus fare to home destination in cash to the patient not attached in the file. Private and government hospitals, where the core competency is to be in surgeries and medicine have had to open computer room and photo studios in hospitals to make documents for the insurance files. In one case, the claim file was simply returned to the hospital as it did not have a photo of the medicine which was injected into the patient before the heart-related operation. After four days, hospital managed to send the file back along with photo of the wrapper of relevant injected medicine. Again, the file was returned by the insurance company with the remark that the bar code on the wrapper of the medicine was not visible. In the meanwhile, the cleaning staff at the hospital had thrown away the wrapper with the garbage. The file is still making its rounds.

Large unpaid bills Deputy Chief Executive Officer of RGJAY, Ajay Gulhane, admitted to delays in the payment of bills by the insurance company. He said, “As per the rule, the payment of medical treatment should be done within 14 working days. However, this is not being followed, so naturally some hospitals are not happy with it.” In Solapur district, Zilla Parishad officials said that bills from two hospital amounting to Rs.90 lakh each are pending and bills totalling Rs.1 crore from the Barshi Cancer Hospital’s are pending with insurance company. He said, “Even hospitals need to pay the bills of medical experts, mediacl and administrative staff, monthly outgoings.”

Hospitals too feeling discriminated against Besides payment issues, hospitals are complaining of inequality in payment slabs. For the same type of surgery, different hospital are paid different packages. The state has classified hospitals into five categories, A, B, C, D, and E (not applicable or empanelled). This classification is done on the basis of infrastructure available at hospitals. For a particular surgery, an A category hospital gets Rs.100 whereas a B category gets Rs.90, a C category gets Rs.80 and a D category hospital gets Rs.70. Therefore hospitals which fall under the B, C and D categories, and their number is large, are not willing to work under the RGJAY scheme. Consequently, many hospitals have stopped conducting health camps and are reluctant to carry surgeries due to payment delays and discrimination. However, because of this, it is the patients who continue to suffer and are forced to take rounds of various hospitals in the hope that the RGJAY will give them a new lease of life.

THE LONG RISKY WAIT 6,791

total patients who were identified as authenticate beneficiary of this scheme are waiting for their turn for operation, among them are:

654 patients awaiting urgent cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery 345 patients of cardiology are waiting for tests and evaluation 408 patients for treatment of genitourinary system 151 patients for general surgery 123 patients for neurology complaints 126 patients for neurosurgery

Leader of the Opposition says Gopinath Munde will lead the BJP in Assembly poll campaign

By Prashant Hamine

L

eader of opposition in legislative council Vinod Tawde yesterday made a strong pitch for central government assistance, clearances and speeding up pending projects like new international airport at Navi Mumbai, Oval-ChurchgateVirar elevated corridor, Indu Mill land for memorial of Dr B R Ambedkar and other issues. He yesterday submitted a list of eight key projects related to Mumbai and Maharashtra to PM Narendra Modi. Commenting on the ensuing assembly polls, he announced that union Rural Development minister Gopinath Munde will lead the election campaign in the state. He urged Prime Minister to strengthen and speed up the implementation of suburban railway projects by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC). Tawde argued that the 62.7 km Oval-Churchgate-Virar Elevated Corridor has been pending since 2007. Even the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Panvel high speed corridor is pending due to objections from the railway ministry. Another project that is stalled is the Airoli-Kalwa Trans-Harbour link which has also been listed for central government assistance. Top on the priority list for the BJP led Mahayuti alliance

in view of the ensuing assembly elections is the speedy clearance of the bill in the parliament paving the way for transfer of NTPC's Indu Mill land for the creation of the grand memorial for Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Referring to the proposed international airport at Navi Mumbai, he demanded the creation of a special project director for speedy implementation of the project. He added that Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar will hold a meeting on May 31 in relation to pending clearances. Commenting upon the water scarcity in Marathwada, Konkan and Vidarbha regions of the state, Tawde mooted the concept of 'Right To Get Minimum Drinking Water' wherein centre and state should implement joint projects to solve drinking

water problems in the state. Referring to Modi's concept of 100 Smart Cities, he argued that considering the rapid urbanisation in the state, there should be at least 10 such cities created by the centre in Maharashtra. Replying to queries over the recent incidence of use of brute force by police on villagers of Kangara in Osmanabad tehsil, he demanded a judicial probe into the incident. Tawde remarked that police mercilessly beat up even the infirm and senior citizens over the issue of people protesting against liquor distribution during the recent Lok Sabha elections. Replying to queries over the assembly elections, Tawde stated that the union Rural Development minister Gopinath Munde will lead the partys assembly election campaign.

NCP’s stunning move! Jitendra Awhad inducted as state cabinet minister in medical education department with eye on Assembly polls By A Special Correspondent

I

n the run-up to the Assembly elections in the state, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) yesterday inducted state unit's working president Jitendra Awhad as a Minister in the state cabinet. This sudden change in the cabinet came in the backdrop of party's debacle in the Lok Sabha elections. Awhad who was sworn in as a cabinet minister is all set to take charge of the Medical Education department. A dedicated supporter of NCP chief Sharad Pawar for last 25 years, Awhad has been one of the most aggressive leaders of the party and is known for his fierce opposition to communal forces.

Jitendra Awhad in state cabinet, The party leaders strongly feel that the inclusion of Awhad, a leader from Nomadic Tribe (NT) might give a different message in the masses and yield some success in the forthcoming election. It may be recalled that

Awhad extended his complete support to the family of Isharat Jahan, who was labelled as a LeT terrorist and was killed in a fake encounter in Gujarat. He is also credited for solely challenging the Shiv Sena's rule in Thane Municipal Corporation. An aggressive orator and party's well-known face on television, Awhad is one of the trusted aides of Pawar. Speaking to reporters after the swearing-in ceremony, he said, “It's a dream come true for me and I was rewarded for my work in politics. As far as the ensuing Assembly elections are concerned, there is no need to tell us to prepare for the polls. The NCP always works for the people and we are ready for any polls.”

E

ven as debate rages on over the educational qualification of BJP's Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, the Constitution of India is silent on educational qualifications required by candidates to contest Lok Sabha, Assembly, Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections. What is more baffling is that in order to contest the elections to Graduates division and Teachers division constituencies in Legislative Council, one need not be a Graduate or a Teacher. However, if one wants to cast a vote in the two aforesaid Legislative Council constituencies then as a voter you have to be either a Graduate or a Teacher by profession as the case may be. Article 84 of the Constitution of India lays down certain qualifications and grounds for disqualification for candidates contesting elections. The bare minimum qualification for contesting candidates is – that he or she should be a citizen of India, he or she has to be a registered voter in any of the as-

sembly constituency in India, that he or she should not be convicted of any offence or disqualified from contesting elections. It is only now following a recent Supreme Court directive that has made it mandatory for all contesting candidates for all elections to fill up their nomination forms. Speaking to ADC yesterday, former Maharashtra Legislature Secretary Ramesh Kambli termed the current raging controversy over Irani's educational qualifications as 'unfortunate'. He argued that more than the educational qualifications what matters is the ability of the elected representative to discharge his or her duties as a minister of the cabinet. Former government officer, private secretary B.D. Shinde disclosed that late Vasantdada Patil was fourterm chief minister, but was educated up to just Std IV. “When asked about it once Vasantdada Patil sarcastically remarked that it was better for him that his brain was not cluttered with education and that he could conjure up brainy ideas than those better

educated than him”, disclosed Shinde. Besides this the other prominent politicians who occupied top executive posts included: K. Kamraj, former Congress MP Prataprao Bhosale, Shiv Sena ex-MLA Babanrao Gholap, NCP MP Vijaysinh MohitePatil and a host of others. As per the study conducted by Assn for Democratic Reforms out of the 543 LS MPs – 126 MPs are HSC passed or below Std XII. As per the ADR study of the Lok Sabha MPs – 58 MPs are HSC passed, 48 MPs are SSC passed, 9 MPs are Std VIII pass, 6 MPs are Std V pass, 5 MPs are literate and 1 TDP MP has declared himself to be illiterate. Out of the 282 BJP MPs, 67 MPs are HSC passed. While PM Narendra Modi is MA in Political Science, Union Minister Najma Heptullah is Phd in Cardiac Anatomy and Dr. Harsh Vardhan is an ENT surgeon. The other less educated Union ministers include: Maneka Gandhi and Smriti Irani (both HSC), Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Anant Geete (both SSC) and Uma Bharti (Std VI).

A Eulogy to a Legendary Visionary and Gentleman Capt C.P.K. Nair

S

adness is not a sufficient word to be used to express the feelings and void left back by the passing away of Capt Nair, no words can describe the tragedy and grief caused. It is a great loss to humanity and to nature. We are all distraught and cannot imagine the grief the family must be going through. Its been about 15 yrs that I had come to know Capt Nair and in that time I had come to look upon him as my idol and mentor. He single handedly changed the entire perception of the hospitality industry. His approach to the hospitality business was extremely personalised and hands on and he truly brought home the hospitality mantra of " Home away from Home" to all his properties. But above all he was the finest human being I had the utmost priveledge of meeting and a true Karmayogi. I have yet to meet a family more humble , rooted and genuine than the Nair

family. They are the most cesses. Our sincere condodiligent and hard working lences go out to the entire people I know despite their Nair and Leela family. Vikrant Urval and Family many accolades and suc-

Prostitution thrives at bus depot located between two schools and also very close to a police station By Aroosa Ahmed

venings have created a unique problem for women who come to take their buses from stops outside the Kurla West Bus Depot. Most of them are mistaken for prostitutes and get propositioned by 'customers.' This is all thanks to the large number of commercial sex workers who operate from the various bus stops here after 6 pm in the evening until late in the night. Incidentally, the bus depot is located between the Orchids

34-year-old man was beaten to death by some local youths from the vicinity at Rajendra Nagar in Kandivali (W), while two of his colleagues received serious injuries in the attack. Preliminary investigation has revealed that old rivalry between two groups led to the crime. Police has registered case against more than 20 goons after the deceased's father complained, but no arrests have been made as yet. Police said, victim Santosh Vijay Parab, an imitation jewellery maker by profession, was a resident of Rajendra Nagar in Kandivali (E). Some youths from the same locality stopped him when he was returning home on his motorbike, followed by an altercation, with the youths beating Parab with iron rod, bamboo sticks, stump, bat, etc. He fell from the motorbike and was noticed by lo-

The Kasturbamarg police took him to a nearby hospital along with his colleagues Shivkumar alias Bobby (22) and Bhimrao, but Parab later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, police added. Senior Police Inspector from Kasturbamarg police stationj Bharat Worlikar said, ''We have registered case against Ashok Koli, Lalbabu Dasare, Ghanshyam Dasare and others. The reason is previous enmity and yesterday they had a scuffle over a petty matter. All the accused are at large but we will nab them all soon. Talking to the ADC, Shajida, a 23-year-old commuter who regularly boards buses from here, said, “The place is risky for us and also the

school girls, who could even be abducted by flesh traders. One can see these kids usually reacting in a very embarrassed manner when passing these women, who keep passing comments at them. Women who commute from the bus stops everyday are ashamed to have to wait here until boarding the bus.” Shajida added, “I commute every day from this bus stop at 7 pm. I have seen many prostitutes talking to auto rickshaw drivers and men at the bus stop. This makes traveling for women very difficult as we have to witness these scenes everyday. Once an auto rickshaw driver mistook me for a prostitute and asked me indecent questions. The local authorities are doing nothing to stop this. women who was trying to board a train at Jalgaon railway station died after she was allegedly pushed away by a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE). She tumbled between the platform and coach and was run over. The incident occurred at 5.52 am on Thursday morning. However, railway officials maintain that the TTE was trying to give a hand to the lady who was running alongside the moving train while trying

to board it. She has been identified as Ujwala Pandey (34), and was trying to board train 132020 LTT – Rajendra Nagar Superfast Express, along with two children, her nephew (20) and a girl (10) on platform No.3 of Jalgaon railway station. According to eye-witnesses, Ujwala and the two children were running to catch the train. Her nephew and the girl caught the train, but she could not keep pace due to her sari. It is not clear how she fell down, and her relatives and

local people are alleging that she was pushed off by the TTE, so she slipped. Meanwhile, using presence of mind, the guard of the train brought the train to a halt. The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where she was declared dead. A mob started to build up and later started beating the TTE. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) took the TTE to safety at their office in the station. Local police also alleged that it was the mistake of TTE. While talking to reporters, dis-

HAND OVER KEYS BY JUNE 2 BMC asks residents of Campa Cola Compound to vacate homes and surrender keys by Monday

n a classic example of how lenient the government authorities are when it comes to tackling corruption, three Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) personnel including a junior engineer who were caught red-handed by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting bribes in two different graft cases have been reinstated in the civic body. The first case of graft involves Junior Engineer Prashant Jankar, attached to the MBMC’s PWD wing who was caught red-handed on December 9, 2011, while accepting Rs.50,000 as bribe from a contractor to process his pending bills. In the other case, the ACB nabbed two clerks -- Dashrath Handore and Ganesh Ghodge, deployed with the recovery wing of the Local Body Tax (LBT) department on March 2, 2012. The duo had demanded Rs.1 lakh bribe to waive-off tax penalty

The residents however are firm on their decision not to leave their homes, as the monsoons are near and would be difficult for them to find new shelter at such a short notice. One of the residents said, “We, the people staying here, are united and are one family. We will not hand over the keys of our homes till the time there is no solution to

well. Vidya Srinivas, a resident said, “We are hoping that the apex court gives us a chance and hears our plea before demolishing our flats.” The civic authority had directed the residents that if they do not give the possession of their flats, it will approach the Supreme Court. The residents had been given a deadline of May 31 by the apex court.khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

This facility was to have been fully functional from March 1 onwards. At very beginning transport department has announced that MH47 will open on 1 March, later it was extended to 15 March and now it has extended further till 15 June. “We were appointed to work at the Dahisar RTO but till now we are working in the Andheri RTO from the last one year.” sources added. Talking to ADC, Deputy Regional Transport Officer (Deputy RTO) Bharat Kalaskar said that, '' The work is in progress but MH-47 will take more than three months to complete the whole process, the furniture work is going on..” When we inquired if there is any dispute between BMC,who owns the land and State Transport Department, Kalaskar said, '' Earlier, there were some dispute between

both the department about the rent, due to which the project was getting late, but now everything has settled and we hope people between Goregaon to Dahisar will get relief soon.” In Dahisar RTO only license and cash transaction work will be done as it does not have enough space. The Andheri RTO spreads over 7,000 to 8,000 sq feet. The Vehicle Passing Transport Department has taken the land behind Atharva College in Malwani. Sources further revealed that, huge number of auto and taxi drivers used to stay between Goregaon to Dahisar and due to them we have extra work load, the residence from Bandra to Jogeshwari, almost 70 per cent people visit the Andheri RTO to gain license for private vehicle.

lmost three months after the State Transport Department announced the opening of the new Regional Transport Office (RTO) at Kandarpada in Borivali (West) which would cater to the residents between Goregoan to Dahisar, the opening of the new RTO is still awaited. After the state transport department had announced in the month of February this year that they will shortly open the new RTO office MH-47 in order to reduce the extra work load from the Andheri RTO and for the better convenience for the residence of Goregaon to Dahisa. But after the March deadline gone the problem for the Andheri RTO officials are the same. There are more than 2,000 people from Bandra to Dahisar traveling everyday to Four Bungalows in Andheri for the RTO work which includes car registrations, annual passing of vehicle and getting licenses, but due to the extra work load the people are facing problems to get their licenses on time. Talking to ADC, Police Sub Inspector of Andheri RTO with condition of being anonymous said, '' Around 60 per cent work load will be reduced after the MH-47 opens, work will then be distributed between Andheri RTO and Dahisar RTO, the punctuality will increase. At present around 300 to 350 staff are working in the Andheri RTO but it is not enough to control the flow of the mob, which include more than 1,000 RTO agents.

that had been imposed on a local trader for LBT evasion and were caught while accepting first installment of the bribe amount. All the accused were placed under suspension after their arrest and subsequent police remand. However on the basis of the recommendation made by an internal review committee headed by the Deputy Municipal Commissioner, the trio have now been reinstated. Ironically, the controversial decision is being taken at a time when the case is still under the judicial scanner. Confirming the reinstatement of Jankar, Handore and Ghodge, Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani, said, “Though under suspension, the concerned employees, are not convicted which makes them entitled to 75 per cent salary. Moreover the decision which followed after a nod from the review committee is in accordance to the Government Rules. And we have

It may be recalled that in a similar reinstatement fiasco, a tainted ward officer from Mira Road, was recently allowed to resume services using the same formula expressing the unwillingness of the authorities in taking a tough stand against greedy officers.

leuths of the Nalasopara police have arrested the manager of a printing unit in Valiv, who cheated upon his owner causing him the loss to the tune of Rs.14 lakh. According to the police the accused identified as Vineet Tripathi, was employed as a manager with J.P. Products, an industrial unit which prints labels for reputed packaged water companies. A trusted lieutenant of his master for the past four years, Tripathi handled all the department including financial transactions of the company. However, in his lure of earning a quick buck, Tripathi, fraudulently opened an account in a multi-national Bank in the fake

name of the firm using bogus documents. He then deposited and encashed cheques amounting more than Rs.14 lakh issued in the name of firm, through his bogus account. Meanwhile, the company owner Devrat Kheda, noticed that the goods were being delivered but no recovery of money was being recorded. After confirming about the tranasactions, Kheda registered a complaint, following which the police arrested Tripathi and booked him under sections 420 and 465 of the Indian Penal Code. Tripathi has been remanded to police custody. Further investigations are being carried out by PSI Khopkar from Nalasopara Police Station.

USIC loses its freedom by being subject to the laws of technique, but mystics in their sacred music, regardless of the world’s opinion, free both their composition and improvisations from the limitations of technicality. The art of music in the East is called Kala, and has three aspects: vocal, instrumental and expressing movement. Vocal music is considered to be the highest, for it is natural, the effect produced by an instrument which is merely a machine cannot be compared with that of the human voice. However, perfect strings may be, they cannot make the same impression on the listener as the voice which comes direct from the soul as breath, and has been brought to the surface through the medium of the mind and the vocal organs of the body. When the soul desires to express itself in the voice, it first causes an activity in the mind; and mind by means of thought projects finer vibrations in the mental plane; these in due course develop and run as breath through the regions

of the abdomen, lungs, mouth, throat, and nasal organs, causing the air to vibrate all though, until they manifest on the surface as voice. The voice therefore naturally expresses the attitude of mind whether true or false, sincere or insincere. The voice has all the magnetism which an instrument lacks; for voice is nature’s ideal instrument, upon which all other instruments

MATTER & SPIRIT of the world are modeled. The effect produced by singing depends upon the depth of feeling of the singer. The voice of a sympathetic singer is quite different from that of one who is heartless. However, artificially cultivated a voice may be, it will never produce feeling, grace and beauty unless the heart be cultivated also. Singing has a twofold source of interest, the grace of music and the beauty of poetry. Although the sound produced by an in-

Prime Minister, he enjoys a broad mandate following the election” and “he and his government must now work relentlessly to take India to the summit of its potential.” Business Line (May 17) said Modi's “victory was fashioned by a vote of different kind: for one, this was more the victory of a man than a party.” On the flip side the results reflect a deep revulsion for the Congress which led a government that was at once deeply ineffectual and corrupt.” The paper said “The country will hope that he can bring the focussed target-setting and problem-solving approach that worked so well in Ahmedabad to New Delhi. Conceding that “the burden of expectation may sit so heavily on Modi, the paper said nevertheless “he has a great opportunity to tackle the slowdown, restore the country to better social and economic health and show that results can be achieved through a mix of determination and decisiveness.”

People's anger Writing in Deccan Herald (May 17) B.S. Arun said that “In a country that saw coalition politics reigning supreme in the last two decades, the BJP's stunning victory in the Lok Sabha elections is nothing short of a political tsunami.” “Also”, he said, “for a party that won just 115 out of 543 seats in 2009, to secure a mandate that it got and reach the majority mark (272) on its own is almost a miracle.” Also, said Arun, “for the first time since Independence, the BJP has become the first non-Congress party to gain majority on its own.” Added to that he said: “That most of the Union Ministers and other big names of the Congress bit the dust, that too with big margins shows the kind of people's anger against the century-old organisation.” But Balbir Punj, national vice-president of the BJP, had some good advice to give. Writing in The Indian Express (May 17) he told the new government “To live up to the decisiveness that people expect of it and must act against the cronies who made fortunes out of scrambling for the nation's natural wealth,” adding: “It must curb the imports that have destroyed millions of workshops that used to meet the demand for many consumer items.” He didn't mention the name of the exporter, but who else could it be but China? strument cannot be produced by the voice, yet the instrument is absolutely dependent upon man. This explains clearly how the soul makes use of the mind, and how the mind rules the body; yet it seems as though the body works, not the mind, and soul is left out. There is nothing which is unable to serve as a medium for sound, although tone manifests more clearly through a sonorous body than through a solid one, the former being open to vibrations while the latter is closed. All things which give a clear sound show life, while solid bodies choked up with substance seem dead. Resonance is the preserving of tone, in other words it is the rebound of tone which produces an echo. On this principle all instruments are made, the difference lying in the quality and quantity of the tone, which depend upon the construction of the instrument. The instruments of percussion such as the tabla, or the drum, are suitable for practical music, and stringed instruments like the sitar, violin or harp are meant for artistic music. The vina is especially constructed to concentrate the vibrations; as it gives a faint sound, it is used in meditation. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2014

Nawaz Sharif ’s hands are tied THIS refers to your edit.'Sharif cannot end Pak terror' (ADC, May 29) in which you have stated the obvious categorically that Nawaz Sahrif can do nothng about ending the terror that thrives on his soil thanks to the continued fomenting of it by the extremists who are a civilain part of the army and the army itself. The hard truth is that they are still smarting under the loss of their eastern wing in the Bangladesh war and are constantly trying to see how they can avenge that. The ceasefire violations and the infiltration in Kashmir are all a part of that design. If Sharif starts doing anything against their line of thinking he will be gone as it happened a few years back. Thereefore, under the circumstances the only peaceful option left to us is to live with the inevitable -- the terrorists will roam free there and they will not ever forget the K-word. It is also naive to expect that the culprits of 26/11 will ever be punished.since they were all their own men.

DUMBFOUNDED! Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif did not utter a single world about ending terror from his shores when Indian PM Narendra Modi raised the issue.

Modi’s emotional side NARENDRA Modi is our first prime minister who touched the chords of all Indian hearts when he emotionally broke down while saying that for him his country and his party are like his mother at his swearingin fete last Monday. And serving mother cannot be termed as doing any favours. Modi rekindled patriotism amongst the people present in the hall who then could not control their tears. For the past 12 years Modi was ruthlessly maligned by all opposition parties and also the media. However his unique ways of handling the odds and his sheer hard work paid dividends when he got clear majority. This was achieved in the Indian parliament after 30 years.

and not people. There are ample examples of school and college dropouts across the globe scaling heights of glory in their respective fields through intelligence, hard work and determination. This clearly shows that there need not always be a positive relation between qualification and competence.

lign Ms Smrity Irani,BJP government or anybody. They should reconcile themselves,do introspection and only lick their wounds given by people's mandate and should not bring more shame and disgrce to theor organisation which in fact has become defunct and an effete organisation.

APROPOS 'A historic event ?' (ADC, May 28), the invitation of the SAARC countries is indeed a wise and diplomatically effective initiative by the newly elected BJP government at the time of swearing-in ceremony. Of all the neighbouring nations, Pakistan's presence was most essential in view of the terrorism factor, which has been proved to be hatched in that country. Our media, both print and electronic had a good opportunity on almost a one-toone basis to interact with that on the Pakistani side on this vital aspect wherein during the last few years, India had to haplessly bear with the countless loss of innocent lives. The new PM, Modi had dealt with this vital issue on a strong note and very aptly camouflaging with this auspicious event historically, which was not really done by the UPA regime very unfortunately during the last one decade.

THE fall of Congress Party to the lowest level all around was due to weakest, over confident leadership of Madam Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi both. The best and reputed Nehru Gandhi family from Jawaharlal Nehru to Indira Gandhi and even to some extent Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi – all have fallen to zero level now. It is beyond repairs now. It would have been better if some non-Nehru Gandhi person could have taken the reins of Congress Party to come back and fight it in future. But unfortunately Madam Sonia Gandhi has taken the lead, reelected as head of Congress Party.

For busy professionals and people who spend hours trying to pick from the many dishes on à-la-carte menus, set menus are a blessing. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Dev Goswami help you pick from the several set menus that restaurants in the city offer

D

o you hate looking through the several pages of a menu, trying to decide what you should order to eat for each course? If you’re indecisive and want to eat a tasty meal without going through the process of ordering it à-la-carte, set menus are made for you. The tailor-made menus often feature some of the best dishes that a restaurant has to offer and (most!) are priced well too, so you will be saving money as well as avoiding over or under-ordering your meal. From basic three-course meals, to lavish five and seven-course spreads, take a look at the best set menus that the city has to offer.

the White oWl We love set menus that have a delightful gourmet twist to them. If you do too, head over to The White Owl for their Express Lunch Menu, which consists of a wide variety of soups, salads and entrées. The express lunch is available only up to 3pm, but it includes soups such as the Charred Tomato Galangal and Lemongrass Grilled Chicken Salad and a Roasted Pumpkin dish that’s a must-try. They have three different options to choose from, including soup and salad (`349), soup and entrée (`349) and soup, salad and entrée (`549). Where One Indiabulls Centre, Lower Parel Contact 24210231

For starters, you have the option to choose from Bhagu Ke Kebab, Samundari Ratan, Subz Shikhampuri and Anar Badam Ke Aloo. The mains includes a variety of lamb, chicken, paneer and dal dishes along with a chicken or vegetarian biryani. The meal ends with Tabhakh Jamun and assorted kulfis. You can also indulge in chocolate cakes, savarin and pannacota as dessert. The best part about their set menus is that they also have a two-course menu designed especially for children (`1,000), a three-course brunch (`1,200) and a fourcourse brunch (`1,400) for those who can’t stomach the entire five-course brunch (`1,600). You can have unlimited black coffee or tea for an extra `100 and `75 respectively. The set menu doesn’t end there though. A mAgicAl

weekend

N

ext weekend, Pune takes a cue from venues across the world to play host to The Secret Garden Weekend (TSGW), a two-day weekender with this year’s theme inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The event aims to please all your five senses of sound, sight, taste, smell and touch. Varsha Krishnani, founder of The Secret Garden, tells us, “TSGW came up with the basic idea of giving people an experience that is completely new and unique. Each segment of the weekender is curated with the simplest idea that it should be a fresh experience, something that people will remember for years.” Here’s what you can look forward to.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2014

« event: Short filmS

Music, check. Art, check. Food, check. Aromas, check. We are talking about The Secret Garden Weekend, which will be held in Pune next week and promises to entertain you with all that and much more. Yamini Walia & Dev Goswami find out more and donated to a less fortunate individual or family. The Bed of Light is an installation amongst flowers and sounds where you can watch your favourite artists, while lying on hammocks.

Food Some of the most exciting segments of TSGW are the culinary events, where you can select from an array of world cuisines, ranging from Swiss to Japanese. Adding some fun to the various counters will be six chefs who will create experimental, impromptu dishes live. There will also be a Table of 10, where ten lucky people will be treated to an eight-course tasting menu of molecular and blindfolded treats. If you’d like a chance at the Table of Ten, register your name at The Box Office.

Music As many as 30 live acts will perform over two days, in genres ranging from indie and international to fusion and Carnatic, with rare instruments mixed with techno, as well as more contemporary genres such as electronica. Day one will showcase 15 acts, comprising of electronic music from the genres of deep house and techno, on the main stage called Zeitgeist. The second day on the other hand, has an interesting confluence of five artists performing a beautifully crafted concoction of electronic music, with Carnatic vocals and rare instruments such as the sitar, mouth harp and tabla, for 90 minutes.

at the Pantry

I

f regular, Friday film releases don’t make the cut when it comes to your weekly dose of film watching, head to The Pantry, where they are hosting a short film night every month, in association with Shamiana and MAC Productions. There are very few places in the city where you can head to in order to catch the best short films, but now, the eatery will play host to short films across genres such as drama, comedy, thriller and tragedy. As part of this initiative, they are showing films such as Alchemy by Shivangi Ranawat, The Last Marble by Manjari Makijany, Blouse by Vijayeta

an aroMaTic experience So far, TSGW has events which, though great, are the usual weekender suspects. But, this one has us truly excited! You can look forward to smelling several aromas through concepts such as The Dichotomy of Flowers, Blindfolded Sensory Trails and The Aromas in Wines. Experience the beauty of nature with a combination of experimental lighting and flower installations at the Gulmarg Igloo. During the afternoon, you can participate in workshops on fragrances and sensory experiences, accompanied by blind-folded sensory trails. Also, there will be workshops on aromas of scented wines where you can smell different wines and learn about their diverse smells and how to identify them.

Visual TreaT To please your visual senses, TSGW will display art installations and thematic zones such as The Road of Thought Labyrinth, The Tree of Secrets, Fountain of Secret Desires, The Bed of Light, The Hammock Party and the Walk of Fire. The interesting and exciting part is that before you enter the Road of Thought Labyrinth, you will consume Secret Potion — a drink made from spices and absinthe. The maze is a geometrically designed walk, filled with visual art, moving objects and fantasy characters. The Tree of Secrets, on the other hand, will have you making a confession by climbing the rope and dropping your confession in a box. A box will be opened every hour and your secrets will be displayed on clothes hanging on a rope all over the festival. If you want to relax and rejuvenate, visit the Fountain of Secret Desires, where you can sun-bathe and cool off next to the mountain, with live jams and drum circles. You can even drop a coin in the fountain to make a wish. The coins will be collected

hef Vikas Khanna was recently a part of the Cook for a Smile event, held by the Smile Foundation, as a judge for a cookery show where top leaders from the corporate industry participated. He talks to us about his association with the event. Tell us about your association with the Smile Foundation. I have been focussed on taking Indian cuisine global over the last few years, but when I come back I see malnourished children. Malnutrition leads to various complications, both physical and mental. Three out of ten children globally are malnourished. So, when Smile reached out to me to join them as their ambassador for

better nutrition, I thought this was the best bonding ever for a common cause. What was the motive behind it? The Cook for a Smile event was a brilliant amalgamation of the corporate world coming together for a social cause. We had 12 CEOs as well as leaders from various fields coming together for the first fund raiser. I am aiming at raising funds for 5,000 children in the first year of the initiative. SS Homme’s Prêt Studio has introduced a fantastic range of briefcases for men that we love for their classic charm. Available in quintessential colours of black and brown, the bags are made of genuine leather. Most of their designs come with a matching leather pouch that will hold all your essentials. We feel that though these bags feature a simple design, the great finish ensures that they will add a touch of class to your work outfit. Price `12,500 onwards where www.sshomme.in

abindia has built a repertoire of ethnic products, especially traditional wear. They recently launched Fabels, a contemporary, western-wear label. The collection is housed in one corner of their Kala Ghoda store and includes menswear, women’s attire and accessories including bags and shoes. The collection features bright colours, with oranges and reds being the most visible. Though the collection features western silhouettes, I liked the fact that Fabinida stayed true to its roots and gave the apparel an Indian touch. Whether it is because of the festive colours, or materials used, such as chanderi silk, the dash of ethnicity in the collection ensures that the range offers something different — after all, if it didn’t, wouldn’t you rather visit a store that specialises in western wear? You can choose from jackets, waistcoats, trousers, shirts, skirts and dresses, while in terms of accessories, you can pick from a range of scarves, jewellery, bags and shoes. In terms of aesthetics, the collection features simple and some unique, cuts and designs that are perfect for every day wear. Their range of jackets and skirts caught my attention in particular. I also liked the block print designs that Fabels has introduced. They won’t blow your mind, but will definitely increase the fashion quotient of your wardrobe. That is a statement that holds true for most of their collection — the designs are simple, but very stylish. Their range of accessories and bags didn’t really impress me as much as the clothes. This may have been due to the lack of variety — more choice would make shopping here worthwhile. However, the one plus point is that their range of accessories complements their apparel perfectly. For example, the white tote with

They offer themed kits such as Ladybug Fancy and Do the Dino, that include plates, glasses, napkins, table covers, banners, hats and matching invites. With all the items for each theme listed separately, you can choose what you want to buy, so you aren’t forced to buy the Dino Piñata, for example, if you don’t want to. For adults, the merchandise is further divided into general themes and there is merchandise for baby showers and tea parties as well. According to what you click on, you

>> The jackets, dresses (left) and tops (right) all feature western silhouettes, with an ethnic touch

but what they do have on offer is certainly worth checking out. The price range is characteristic of the Fabindia we know, ranging from `999 to `6,000. If you want everyday western wear with a slight ethnic touch, Fabels is worth checking out.

Charmed Celebrations, a new e-commerce website, has merchandise to meet your every party need. Shirley Mistry tells you more can expect to find a mix of cake stands, plates, cups, doilies, place cards and napkins. If you don’t want to stick to a theme and only need some basic party supplies, they have cake stands, balloons (plain, printed and foil ones), cupcake kits (including liners and toppers based on a theme), candles, piñatas and party games. They also have an interesting range of plastic glasses, including shot glasses and disposable wine glasses that can make your party fuss-free and easy to clean up afterwards. Prices start at as low as `149 for candles and `349 for printed balloons and go up to `999 for the cupcake kits and `1,849 for cupcake stands. They may be a little more expensive than a neighbourhood store, but the convenience of ordering online and the ease with which you can now throw theme parties, sort of makes up for the hefty prices. where www.charmedcelebrations.com

s soon as you enter Pizza Express, you can’t help but notice the interiors, because of the intricate detailing on the walls, chairs, floor and even in the open kitchen. After all, who could imagine that someone would use grills as a restaurant wall? We began our meal with the Dough Balls Doppio (`325), that served two. The dough balls are served with three different dips: pesto, pesto rossa and garlic butter. They were soft, crunchy and light and the dips matched the dough balls perfectly. They’re also quite addictive, so it was hard to stop eating them. While we dug into the dough balls, we sipped on a simple Lemon Iced Tea (`160) and Green Tea (`100), neither of which were spectacular, but are worth a try. Our main course began with one of their delicacies — the Pomodoro Pesto Romana Pizza (`620). For those who don’t know, this usually includes cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, pesto, baby mozzarella and garlic oil. Their version stuck to the tried and tested formula and was light, delicious and well presented. It’s impossible to visit an Italian place and not try their pasta, so we had to give it a go. We decided to try the Tagiliatelle Polo Bolognese (`550), a penne pasta with chicken that was cooked in a thin tomato sauce, with a hint of chilli and rosemary. The flavours blended well together, none overpowering the other. We were waiting for something to go wrong and thought that perhaps, with so much attention on the food, the Cheesecake (`325) might disappoint. However, the melt-in-the-mouth blend of cream cheese and sugar was the perfect end to our meal. Service at Pizza Express was impeccable and the staff was very friendly. I loved everything about the restaurant so much that I would like to visit the place again and again — that being said, new restaurants are often fabulous in their first few months, losing their high standards as time goes by. I’m hoping Pizza Express isn’t one of those places, because it’s been right on the money so far.

HealtHy Bites D o you remember the roti rolls that notoriously found their way into your lunch box through your school days? Masked with ketchup or coated with egg and sometimes even stuffed with cheese, the humble homemade rolls have been a staple snack/ lunch food in most our tiffin boxes growing up. Switch the ketchup with hummus or Greek yogurt and swap the basic filling for something fancier, such as butter beans or tofu and you have a sense of what food at Café Jiwa looks like. Originally a brand that sells healthy atta customised for different tastes and needs (such as for women, for slimming purposes, for diabetics and for the youth), Café Jiwa is an extension of these healthy attas. You can choose a flour, a filling and a sauce and the roti-master will whip up a roti wrap, right from scratch — they even knead the dough in front of you. Seating is minimal, so we took the only empty table under the small awning outside the café and started off by sampling some of their rotis with a lovely peanut and green chutney, just to get a feel of what gave rise to their entire menu that stands for healthy and wholesome eating. While you may not be able to tell one atta apart from the other, the piping hot rotis paired with the

different chutneys, were delightful. Next, we tried the butter beans and feta wrap with a Greek yoghurt sauce, as well as the wrap with exotic vegetables in balsamic dressing, with hummus and Mexican salsa.

Yamini Walia visited Le Pain Quotidien (LPQ) to try out their new, six course tasting menu, served only for dinner

L

PQ has introduced a new, six-course tasting menu, which is being served up to June 1. The dinner-only tasting menu features some of the best dishes in the restaurant, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, priced at `1,200 and `1,400, respectively. I began my meal by trying their white wine, a Grover Zampa Viognier that came as complimentary drink with the set meal. I am not usually a wine person, but this one tasted delicious. The wine was accompanied by breads, which were the most disappointing part of the dinner. LPQ literally means the daily bread and it is ironical that the breads were extremely tough and difficult to eat. Among the six courses, I really enjoyed the Chicken Club Tartine, Confit Chicken & Porcini Mushroom Ravioli and the Fourteen Hour, Slow Cooked Tenderloin. If you are a meat lover, the tenderloin is probably the best dish on the menu for you. A Sorbet Du Jour, prepared with the fruit of the season — mango — was divine. The Mushroom Cobb Salad and Watermelon and Arugula Salad could have been better. The dessert trio comprised of three different desserts and they were all well-prepared, though the presentation fell short of my expectations. My experience at LPQ was quite enjoyable. Opt for the set meal for the variety, but steer clear of the bread. When Up to June 1 Where 3, Maker Maxity, BKC, North Avenue, Bandra (E) Contact 66431616

Café Jiwa promises to pack wholesome nutrients in every bite of their roti-based menu. Shirley Mistry pays them a visit to try out the healthy fare >> Café Jiwa is a good option if you are craving for healthy roti-rolls

The butter beans were slightly undercooked and the crumbs of feta sparse, but as a whole, this wrap came together well. The exotic vegetables however, were a much-loved preparation.

The mix of vegetables were cooked through, but retained their crunch and paired well with the sauces. Also, one wrap is filling enough to suffice as dinner, so don’t underestimate it’s size when it is served. They also offer platters, that are basically de-constructed wraps, with three rotis, two mains (fillings) and two sauces. The wraps are priced at `95, while the platters are priced at `175. We also tried the dark chocolate popsicle (`75), the lemongrass cooler (`75) and the apple and cinnamon cooler (`75). While the former two were average, Café Jiwa knocks it out of the park with the apple and cinnamon cooler, which tastes like a delicious apple pie, in the form of a cool drink. They may not have too much seating space or variety on their menu, but Café Jiwa gets it right with their roti wraps, making it worth trying out if you are in the area and a hunger pang catches you unawares. >> Take a look at our fact file to find out the best travel and stay options if you want to plan a trip to Belseri

>> If you have an insatiable love for Tea, head to the lush Belseri Tea Estate

Down To The

Tea! Known for its robust tea, Assam truly is Ground Zero for the world’s number two drink, as Raul Dias discovered on a recent trip to the organic Belseri Tea Estate near Guwahati

I

wouldn’t call myself a tea aficionado by any stretch of imagination. My consumption of the ‘fuel of the country’ is limited to an occasional tumbler of iced-tea to banish the summer blues. All of its so-called invigorating properties are lost on me, as I prefer the world’s number one drink — water. So, feeling like a philistine, I made my way towards the lush Belseri Tea Estate in the small village of Belseri, situated in the north-eastern part of Assam’s capital, Guwahati, for a bit of tea demystification. Being in Assam and not trying out tea would be sacrilegious! Greeted by the estate’s affable general manager, Inderjit Uberoi, I was whisked off in his SUV with an armed guard in tow. I was told that with the omnipresent threat of insurgence by the neighbouring aboriginal Bodo tribe of the Brahmaputra valley, it is prudent to always have an armed guard. But, on that torrid April day, apart from the apparent threat of a heatstroke, there was little to fear. Sipping on chilled cranberry-flavoured iced tea, I made my way through my very own Fifty Shades of Green, thanks to the verdant, threefeet high tea bushes. Rows and rows of bushes were in the process of being divested of their crowning glory — the bud and two leaf trio — by scores of singing women, who knew exactly what to nip off and what not to. Adorned with nylon mesh bags strapped to their foreheads to catch the leaves, they merrily made their way from bush to bush, stopping to take sips from plastic bottles, the contents of which looked unfamiliarly yellow and muddy. This was a concoction of tea leaves, water and salt; designed to stave off the dehydrating effects of

being out in the sun for too long. Set up over a century ago, this 400 acre tea estate is different in the sense that it is one of the very rare, 100% certified organic tea estates, not just in Assam, also across India’s entire tea belt. Owned by Variety Foods, who have several tea lounges in Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Surat, using the tea grown and manufactured inhouse, this estate operates on very strict tea manufacturing codes, producing a staggering one million kilograms of tea every year. And one of those organic codes means the total lack of any weedicide used on the property. Which is why, I was quick to see another section of the estate being manually de-weeded by male workers, raking the gnarly, stubborn weeds from the roots of the tea bushes. Another important aspect of organic tea, is the absence of chemical fertilisers used in the estate. So, natural fertilisers such as cow dung are used. But, even these have to come from cows who are fed only

organic matter, making it a truly labourintensive process to produce that perfect cup. Back at the rather modest on-site factory, I was taken through the entire leaf-to-cup process after the plucked leaves were brought in. Following a motorised, fan-assisted drying process called withering, the cleaned leaves were chopped to an almost mulch-like consistency and left to oxidise. This was important, as when the leaves ferment and turn progressively darker, they start to take on that typically ‘tea’ colour, strength and briskness. After drying, the leaves are then cleaned, sorted and sent off to the packaging section of the plant. Expecting a much more high-tech packing operation, I was a little surprised to see a very basic lot of packaging machines dispense the tea into shiny pouches ready to be brewed and consumed. But before that, I was privy to the very painstaking grading process, where the different varieties of tea from the estate such as the basic CTC (crush, tear and curl), more premium Long Leaf, Broken Pekoe and speciality teas including Silver Tips are sorted out and tasted before being specially packed. Similar to traditional wine tasting, one is meant to see, sniff and then slowly sip the black tea, devoid of the customary milk and sugar, while giving it a swirl in your mouth to open its ‘bouquet’ of tasting notes. Caramel, chocolate and hints of coffee stood out from my initial few sips of the prized Silver Tip brew. The trio of flavours managed to work their magic on me, making the world’s number two drink climb up a few notches on the scale of my all-time favourite drinks. And that’s no mean feat!

FACT FILE Getting there You can reach Belseri from Guwahati. The trip takes around three hours by road and four hours by train. Guwahati is wellconnected to Mumbai and to the rest of the country by air, road and rail. When to visit The best time to visit the Besleri Tea Estate is between November and April, when the tea gardens are at their greenest and the weather is at its coolest. However, you can see the picking, processing and packaging of their tea all year round, as the estate is operational through the year. Contact the Belseri Tea Estate via email: sales@organicbelseri.com, tel: +91 33 2231 2294, or visit: www.organicbelseri.com Accommodation Although there are virtually no accommodation options available in Belseri, the nearby town of Tezpur (an hour’s drive away) houses quality hotels including The Fern (www.fernhotels.com) and Hotel KRC Palace (www.hotelkrcpalace.com), from where day trip to the Belseri Tea Estate is easily possible.

Clearly recovery of PSB loans in in public interest," said Amit Maheshwari, Partner of CA firm Ashok Maheshwary and Associates. The directions were issued in view of reluctance of the Income Tax Department, which comes under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), to share information provided in wealth tax returns with the banks despite repeated requests. The information will help banks in recovering bad loans by sale of immovable and movable asset of loan defaulters. However, the Finance Ministry

said banks will be allowed to recover their dues from sale of assets of defaulters only after settlement of the claims of the tax department. "In order to ensure that tax dues of the Department against the defaulter (if any) are safeguarded, an undertaking be obtained from the PSB to obtain an NOC from jurisdictional CIT of the loan defaulter before appropriation of the surplus amount recovered from sale of immovable/ movable asset of the defaulter, information in respect of which is shared, after adjustment of its loan dues," it said. The Finance Ministry further said the information provided by the Income Tax Department to banks should only be used for recovery of loans and should not be shared with any other agency.

CAG Says RIL Charged More Than Approved Gas Price By A Business Reporter

T

he Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has pulled up Reliance Industries for charging a rate in excess of the government approved price for its KGD6 gas field and not including the marketing margin for calculating royalties and government's share. The government had in October 2007 set a sale price of USD 4.20 per million British thermal unit based on the price discovered by RIL from key customers. The CAG in a draft report of audit of RIL's eastern offshore KG-D6 block spending’s stated that the company charged USD 4.205 per mmBtu from consumers, leading to excess billing of USD 9.68 million, reports PTI."As per the price discovery process undertaken by the operator (RIL)... It was categorically indicated that selling price would be rounded off to two decimal points. "A review of records relating to sales of gas to consumers, however, revealed that the operator has been charging the gas price at the rate of USD 4.205 per mmBtu (three decimal points) from its consumers in place of USD 4.20 per mmBtu, ar-

rived at after rounding of 2 decimal points," CAG said. This lead to an excess billing of USD 9.68 million in first four years of production beginning 2009-10. On top of this sale price, RIL charged a marketing margin of USD 0.135 per mmBtu to cover for its marketing risks. "It has also been noticed that while computing the profit petroleum (government's share of production) and royalty, the operator is considering the price of USD 4.205 per mmBtu instead of USD 4.34 being charged by him from the consumers, as the revenue earned through marketing margin is not being treated as revenue for the purpose of calculating cost recovery, profit petroleum and royalty," CAG said. A RIL spokesperson did not immediately offer any comments. RIL, CAG in the draft report said, had collected an amount of USD 261.33 million towards the marketing margin which has not been accounted for in the books. "Consequently, cost recovery of USD 235.20 million (90 per cent) has not been adjusted in the recovered cost up to 2012-13 and there was a short remittance of government share of profit petroleum and roy-

alty by USD 2.61 million and USD 13.12 million respectively for the year 2009-10 to 2012-13 to the Government of India," the report said. The CAG noted that the oil ministry had in December 2011 asked the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) to determine the quantum of marketing margin chargeable on sale of natural gas to end consumers by each marketing entity on the basis of its actual marketing cost. "The issue of marketing margin has not been decided till date," it said. The CAG said the oil ministry had in September 2013 had stated that the Production Sharing Contract (PSC) does not allow the contractor to separately charge marketing costs, either directly or indirectly. "However, operator has charged a marketing margin on sale of gas at the rate of USD 0.135 per mmBtu over and above USD 4.2 per mmBtu, but the same revenue was refused to be accounted by the operator in the financial statements. "The financial impact of such refusal to account the marketing margin works out to USD 261 million, which is based on the cumulative gas sale," the report added.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is opposing the Commerce Ministry's recommendation to slap an anti-dumping duty on imported solar cells, saying "it is not the right time" to impose the levy. Last week, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry recommended imposing a restrictive duty in the range of USD 0.11 to 0.81 per watt on solar cells imported from the US, China, Malaysia and Chinese Taipei. A final decision on the recommendations, which is expected to provide relief for struggling domestic manufacturers, will be taken by the Finance Ministry.

The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 101 points and closed below the psychologically important 7300 points level. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 0.33%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 673 were gainers, 911 were losers and 42 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has dropped below the slow D line (negative and a sell signal). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level but is now declining (negative if it continues). MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero but is declining (negative if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive). ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line but both lines are converging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is increasing in strength.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 7043 points level. The next support is at the 6846 points level. Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 7384 points level. The next resistance is at the 7497 points level. Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7262 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7198. Support (2) = 7161. Resistance (1) = 7299. Resistance (2) = 7363. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a black body candle. In fact yesterday’s candle is almost like a Black Marubozu candle. This is negative and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market. Further, the index is below its 5 days moving average which is declining. Moreover, the velocity parameters, which were positively trended have now turned neutral. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. However, the index continues to remain above its 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the three averages are rising and also positively trended. This is positive. As such these are mixed signals. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 7206 point’s level.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 7321) Negative. Is above its 15-day average (at 7206) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 7012) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 6246) Positive. All the four averages are positively trended. Positive.

n 1931, there was this landmark Charlie Chaplin starrer romcom American flick ‘City Lights’. This time, we have our own desi Bollywood ‘City Lights’ starring Rajkummar Rao opposite debutante Patralekhaa, directed by the acclaimed director Hansal Mehta. The central theme of ‘City Lights’ is inspired by the award winning British and Filipino movie ‘Metro Manila’ (1913). While the noted National Award winner, actor Rajkummar’s amazing theatrical is evident with his cinematic track record, it is his ‘real-life’ girlfriend cum co-star Patralekhaa, who is making waves these days. Those who have watched the sneak previews ( including Vidya Balan) Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa in ‘City Lights’

are all in praise for this newbie winsome model turned actress. Apparently, she has displayed sensitive intensity in some of the complex scenes in ‘City Lights’ as a helpless wife and a mother who confronts her frustrated husband. Enthuses Patralekhaa ( aka Anwita Paul) said, “It’s an emotionally exhausting and challenging multi-faceted role of a small town young woman 'Raakhee’ who later gets entangled in the city's night life, and the web of playing a raunchy bar-girl,” smiles the actress who has this fleeting simi-

larity with charming actress Divya Dutta. Wasn’t she jittery romancing her real-life co-star boyfriend Rajkummar Rao during the shoot ? “Initially, I was very self conscious with the entire crew watching us. But then Hansal sir prodded us into a comfort zone, when we switched over to our screen characters where we play husband and wife and then it was fine,” insists Patralekhaa, who scotches speculations that she bagged the lead role in ‘City Lights’ on her boyfriend’s recommendation. “While its true that we are see-

Lara Dutta is back in movies post-pregnancy A

ctress Lara Dutta, who had taken a sabbatical, post the birth of her baby, says she is focusing on movies now and will be shooting for a film this year. Lara is married to the Indian tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi. In January 2012, she delivered a baby girl. Now, the actress turned producer is gearing up for a comeback in film. "Right now I am focusing only on doing films. I am definitely going to be back in films. I am shooting this year, the release is not in my hands. I can not talk about which films I am doing," Lara said in a media interaction "Everyone knows that we are doing a sequel to 'Chalo Delhi', that is in the pre-production stage. I am quite excited about it. Besides this, there are films that I am doing outside my production house," she said. 'Chalo Dilli' (2011), directed by Shashant Shah, had Lara and Vinay Pathak in the lead and Akshay Kumar in a guest appearance. Now, Lara is getting ready to roll a sequel, reportedly titled 'Chalo China'. "There is a lot

happening this year with my production house Bheegi Basanti Entertainment. We are producing films and TV shows," she said. Though Bollywood actors are seen on the small screen, Lara is clear she won't be coming on television.

ing each other, the fact is that I was signed mainly on my potential merit. Actually I had to go through five rounds of auditions and look-tests before they signed me on. Why would a prestigious production houses launch me, if I was unable to meet their high expectations,” counters the spontaneous actress who is also willing to enact lovey dovey roles and play bold characters to prove her versatility. And definitely not only opposite her off screen beau Rajkummar.

Arfi’s innovative role in ‘Fugly’ Arfi Lamba was first noticed in the Oscar winning ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and then a powerful role in ‘Prague’. Now his ambitious venture ‘Fugly’ is up for release and we had an interaction with him about his new film. Here is what the star in making has to say.

By Sandeep Hattangadi

Tell us about your journey to filmdom. I come from a small village in Punjab and then came to Delhi for further studies but was more interested in movies and one day ultimately I packed my bags to come to Mumbai with dreams in my eyes but they were soon shattered and I had to do theater with Dinesh Thakur’s group and go through many rounds of auditions. How did you bag ‘Fugly’? I came to know that auditions were on for the film and I made it there. I was auditioned thrice and soon landed in the role of Aditya, all thanks to the producers Akshay Kumar and Ashwini Yardi of Grazing Goat Pictures and director Kabir Sadanand. What is the film about? ‘Fugly’, directed by Kabir Sadanand, is shot extensively in Delhi and the breathtaking

locations of Leh. It is a story of four friends; Dev, Devi, Gaurav and Aditya and about their carefree bunch, at the threshold of their lives, get caught in a ‘Fugly’ incident, which sucks them slowly into the big bad world of corruption, politics and when a hard hitting bad cop gets after this group of friends.

Describe your character. I play Aditya, a mild mannered miserly middle class guy who gets bold and speaks his mind out in the climax of the film. How did you like working on the film? We had a blast since we all were young like Mohit Marwah, boxer Vijender Singh, Kiara Advani, and Jimmy Shergill. Also Kabir Sadanand was fun to work with since he gave us a lot of space to enact our scenes and the final outcome has come out pretty good.

‘Rajesh Khanna inspired me to become a make-up man’ Deepak Sawant has been Amitabh Bachchan’s make-up man for more than four decades. We met the amicable Deepak Sawant in a chatty mood. Excerpts from the interview: By Rajesh V. Gaur & Suneel V. Gaur

How and when did you become Amitabh Bachchan’s make-up man? I first met Amitji on the sets of Raaste Ka Patthar in 1972. He liked my work but unfortunately his films were not doing well at the box office. But he promised to keep me as his personal make-up man when the time was right. A scene from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

A

ccording to the policy going to be followed by the new BJP government, films that promote Indian culture will be encouraged, and the example being held up of such a film, is Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Not to take away from the Aditya Chopra film’s achievements as the longest running Indian film of time and voted among the most popular movies in Indian cinema; some of the dialogues have passed into popular parlance, the songs are evergreen. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are still considered the top romantic pairs… but is it an ideal image of Indian culture? That’s debatable. It’s safe to assume that everybody who watches Hindi films must have seen it at least once, if not multiple times; so the plot is known. But let’s list some of the problem areas.

Chaudhary Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri) lives in London, but runs his family consisting of wife Lajjo (Farida Jalal) and daughters Simran (Kajol) and Chhutki (Pooja

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot Ruparel), like a feudal lord in an old-fashioned Indian village. Simran has limited independence—enough to get her an education, but nothing else. She has to marry a man of her father’s choice,

back in his Punjab village. There is no scope for protest or negotiation. This is a nightmare scenario for many young women of South Asian origin living in the West, and in no way shows up Indians in a good light. Respect for parents and adherence to traditional values is fine, but Baldev Singh is practically a dictator. Still, Simran manages to beg and plead to go with her friends to Europe before the doors slam on her future. Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) is an ebullient young fellow, who is seen filching beer from Baldev’s shop, because the obstinate man won’t sell after closing time. He has failed in his exams, but his father (Anupam Kher) is cool with it, and as a reward for nothing, Raj also goes off on a European trip. The implication being, Indians are notoriously lax with their sons.

Hrithik-Katrina almost complete their shooting of ‘Bang Bang’

Kat to perform item song in ‘Kick’ F

ormer lovers Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif are set to re-unite. And no, not in real life, but onscreen. Apparently Salman has asked Katrina to perform an item song in his upcoming film ‘Kick’. Kat has reportedly accepted the offer from the film’s producer Sajid Nadiadwala. The ex-couple last appeared in the 2012 film ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. The shooting for this song is said to commence, sometime in June as Kat is currently shooting for ‘Bang Bang’. The item number which is said to be raunchy was earlier offered to Deepika Padukone. But Dippy turned it down, as she is already performing an item song in the film ‘Happy New Year’. Katrina has already done an item number in Sallu’s film ‘Bodyguard’ and the cast and crew of ‘Kick’ were excited on having her onboard. We wonder, what beau Ranbir Kapoor has to say about his lady love working with her exboyfriend again.

Shahid takes over Casanova tag from Ranbir

A

lthough Shahid Kapoor has been in the industry longer than Ranbir Kapoor, it was Ranbir who got tagged as a quinessential ‘Ladies Man’. Now, Ranbir seems to be in a steady relationship with Katrina Kaif and Shahid wants to make up for lost time by wooing the ladies. He has been linked to a slew of women over the past one month. He has been spotted dining, partying and relaxing the young starlets of Bollywood like Sonakshi Sinha and Jacqueline Fernandez.

Has Karan Johar shelved ‘Shuddhi’?

S

D

irector Siddharth Anand can finally breathe. The reason being, his movie ‘Bang Bang’ has completed 90 per cent of shooting and is well on schedule. The film’s lead pair Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif will commence the last schedule of the shoot in Prague. The editing of the film is also happening simultaneously as Siddharth is keen to release the film exactly on October 2. Siddharth had roped in Hollywood’s top action director Andy Armstrong to design the high octane and never before seen stunts in Bollywood. Almost all the breathtaking action scenes were shot in Abu Dhabi. Hrithik and Katrina were said to have worked extremely hard to perform some of the dangerous stunts. The movie produced by Fox Star Studios will lock horns at the box office with Priyanka Chopra’s ‘Mary Kom’ and Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Haider’, which are also releasing on October 2.

They meet, quarrel, are separated from their groups and fall in love. Simran is whisked off to Punjab to marry the boorish Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi). Raj is encouraged by his father to go after her, and bring back his bride. Raj goes to India, insinuates himself into the family and does every underhand thing to win over Baldev. Both Raj and Simran lie and scheme to fool their families—there is a scene in which Simran is observing the karwa chauth fast (an outdated, male-worshipping ritual) and does a bit of drama to break her fast with Raj instead of her fiancé. Inference—Indian youngsters are spineless and sly. Simran’s mother gives them permission to run away, but Raj won’t marry Simran unless the father gives his approval. In mother-worshipping India, the mother’s word has no value, the father has undisputed rights. When Raj is exposed as an imposter, he walks off leaving Simran to her fate; if Baldev has a change of heart it is because Kuljeet shows himself up as a violent monster, and Raj’s ‘decency’ (or cowardice) impresses him. The film shows up all that is unsavoury about the Indian patriarchal system—autocratic fathers, submissive women, macho young men and the huge difference in the way sons and daughters are raised. An entertaining film, no doubt, but not a nice picture of Indian culture.

Sunny bags movie with Ram Kapoor

S

unny Leone is definitely making her way to the top in Bollywood. After the success of ‘Ragini MMS 2’, Bollywood’s Baby Doll bagged four more movies- ‘Tina And Lolo’, ‘Mastizaade’ and two movies in South. Now, according to sources, Sunny has signed up for a film starring Ram Kapoor. Kapoor will be seen romancing Sunny in the film. Although the combination is odd and offbeat, it will seem befitting the comedy. The film is tentatively titled as ‘Patel Rap’. So far, all details of the project have been kept under wraps, but that the two will unite on the silver screen is confirmed.

o far Karan Johar has signed no one for his film‘Shuddhi’. Even though he approached Salman Khan and narrated him the script, he is yet to receive an official confirmation from the actor. And it seems now that KJo is slowly losing interest in his own ambitious project. Rumours are rife that after a series of people walked out from ‘Shuddhi’, Karan diverted his attention to other projects and has kept‘Shuddhi’ on hold. The current concentration of team Dharma is on their filmWarrior. The movie will be helmed duced by Endemol. In all posby ‘Shuddhi’ director Karan sibility, the lead actor in the Malhotra and will be co-pro- film will be Sidharth Malhotra.

Also there are talks of a remake of a Tamil film, which will be directed by Tarun Mansukhani and another one with Guneet Monga. ‘Shuddhi’ which is a period drama, revolves around re-incarnation. The movie requires double roles from the lead actor and actress. The characters will be seen in different avatars in different periods of time and their looks were to be designed by ace fashion designer Manish Malhotra. But the endless challenges that Karan Johar is facing while casting, he has decided to start work on other films.

Does Arjun hold rights over the title ‘Villian’?

B

alaji Motion Pictures had previously named their upcoming film ‘Ek Villian’ as ‘Villian’. Prior to the promotions, the sudden change in the title surprised everyone. However, the reason behind this change in the name was the fact that the rights for the title ‘Villain’ are currently held by Arjun Rampal. The actor has been toying with the idea of making a film with

the title for quite some time now. And because his plans weren’t materialising, Balaji Motion Pictures wanted to use that title for the Sidharth Malhotra starrer film. However, in order to avoid any kind of copyright issues in the future, Ekta Kapoor directed her team to use the title ‘Ek Villian’. We also hear that Rampal is keen to make the film ‘Villian’.

prising. "I am paying a monthly fees of Rs 18,000 to 22-Yards cricket academy where there is a proper pitch. I don't know how may cricketers who get selected for India get this treatment in their own state," a livid Jadhav said. The 29-year-old, who was one of the better performers in Delhi Daredevils' disastrous campaign, doesn't hide his displeasure of not being given a chance to bat higher up the order in the initial games of the tournament. "Actually, the logo on your chest matters!" he said with sarcasm. "If you have that India logo, you are bound to be taken more seriously. Hopefully, after I play for India, I will also get a chance to bat higher up the order in IPL. I would also like to get a chance to play more deliveries to showcase my abilities," said Jadhav, who has scored a mammoth 1223 runs in Ranji Trophy this season. Jadhav was always confident after the last season that the selectors will reward him for his good show.

N

EW DELHI: It happens only in India where a cricketer, who will be soon donning the national colours, is not being provided with a proper training facility in his own backyard and has to pay from his own pocket to get one. The disappointment in Kedar Jadhav's voice was palpable even as he got the news of his maiden callup in the national team for the tour of Bangladesh next month. "I have represented Deccan Gymkhana Club in Pune for the past 14 years. Yet, they have refused to prepare a pitch so that I can have proper net sessions ahead of Bangladesh tour. Today, I have got India call-up, played for the 'A' team and IPL starting from this club. But I guess they are not happy with my progress," a dejected Jadhav told PTI. Asked how was he planning to train for the next two weeks before embarking on tour of Bangladesh, Kedar's reply was even more sur-

Disappointed at India’s move to send weak team: Mushfiqur M

IRPUR: Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim has expressed disappointment over India's decision to send a weakened squad for the three one-dayers but added the move will act as extra motivation for the hosts. After a marathon meeting of the selection panel in Mumbai, the BCCI named a 15-member team under Suresh Raina for the ODIs starting June 15. The squad is without eight of its regular players including MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, and this does not amuse Mushfiqur. "I didn't expect them to take this series so lightly," Mushfiqur told reporters in Mirpur. "We have a chance to give a reply on the field. There is extra motivation. They haven't invited us yet so if we do well in this series, it sends a message," added the wicketkeeper-batsman. Mushfiqur is also banking on star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who is part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team in IPL, to provide in-

puts on the visiting Indian players. "I know most of them and have seen them play, but Shakib has played against all of them, so we will pick his brain. In this day and age, it is hard not to have knowledge on a player," said Mushfiqur. India may be hoping that IPLborn players like Pervez Rasool (Sunrisers Hyderabad off-spinner), Mohit Sharma (Chennai Super Kings medium-pacer), Wriddhiman Saha (Kings XI Punjab wicketkeeper) and Akshar Patel (Kings XI left-arm spinner) can make an impact but Mushfiqur opines that pressure will be on the visitors. "We have defeated their best team in the past. They have a young team, and despite the standard of the IPL, international cricket is a more difficult stage, he added.

Chennai outplayed us in all departments: Wright M

UMBAI: Crashed out of the Indian Premier League after going down to Chennai Super Kings in the Eliminator, Mumbai Indians head coach John Wright admitted that the reigning champions were completely outplayed in all departments of the game. "We had a lot of confidence going into the match because in the last one year or so we have been tough opponents for CSK. To their credit, they probably outplayed us in all departments," Wright said at the

Semifinal finish in WC will be big for Indian hockey: Pargat

C

HANDIGARH: Fully aware about the Herculan task that awaits the Indian men's hockey team in the upcoming World Cup, former captain Pargat Singh today said a semifinal finish in the mega-event would be a big achievement for the past masters of the game. "Going by the team's performance since last year till date, if we reach the semifinals that will be a big achievement. It will be a credit to the team," Pargat told PTI. The hockey World Cup will be played at The Hague, Netherlands from May 31 to June 15. But before the start of the tournament, India were dealt two huge blows in the form of strikers Ramandeep Singh and Nikkin Thimmaiah, who were ruled out due to injuries. "We are already eighth in the world ranking. And adding to this injuries (to Ramandeep and Nikkin) have come at this hour. We will need to put up a really good show to compete with the top teams," Pargat said.

post match press conference. The two-time champion, Chennai comfortably managed to overhaul Mumbai's 173 with eight balls to spare and Wright rued that his side fell short by 20 runs. "We probably ended up with 20 runs less with the bat. From the position we got to, we were looking at 190 plus. While bowling we needed early wickets but could not achieve that. We weren't quite on top of our game and were punished for that," said the former New Zealand captain.

"We probably needed more runs. At one stage we had a lot of wickets in hand. It was a matter of just one player coming off, but it did not happen. We have some big power hitters but we did not play in the dominating manner. We needed someone in those last five overs," he pointed out. Wright said his players knew if they could perform like they did against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday night to qualify for the playoff stage, they would trouble Chennai, but that did not happen.

India beat South Africa 4-1 in WILL HE GO THE MAXIMUM? final practice game ahead of WC T

HE HAGUE (NETHERLANDS), May 29 (PTI) A spirited India defeated South Africa 4-1 in their final practice game to round off their warm-up campaign ahead of the hockey World Cup on a positive note here. India had earlier lost 1-2 to Argentina in the first practice game. Hit hard by injuries to two key strikers -- Ramandeep Singh and Nikkin Thimmaiah, the Indians played the game against South Africa with a maturity head and sense of purpose. India's three goals came from penalty corner conversion by Rupinderpal Singh (2) and V R Raghunath, while captain Sardar Singh also contributed to the scoreline with a field goal. India dominated proceedings for most part of the match and took the lead at the closing stages of the first half through a penalty corner conversion by Rupinder. Rupinder registered his name in the scoresheet again when he successfully converted another penalty corner in the second half to double India's lead. The South Africans did

manage to pull one back from a set piece but the Indian defence stood tall thereafter to thwart any danger to their citadel. Skipper Sardar made the scoreline 3-1 in favour of India with a field strike before Raghunath completed the formalities with a penalty corner conversion. Speaking on India's performance against South Africa, India's High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans, said: "The first half of the match turned out to be a little slower than expected, but the second half of the game saw a really good performance by the team, where defence also gave an excellent response. "We are happy to see both Lalit Upadhyay and Yuvraj Walmiki (Ramandeep and Nikkin's replacements) living up to the expectations from their very first match. The team has been preparing for a long time now and it's time for the boys to deliver their best. I am confident that the boys will perform well in this tournament." India captain Sardar Singh too was satisfied with the outcome of the match.

Nadal hands young gun Thiem a brutal French Open lesson

P

ARIS: Defending champion Rafael Nadal handed out a bruising lesson to highly-rated Austrian Dominic Thiem on Thursday as a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory took the Spaniard into the French Open third round. Eight-time winner Nadal, bidding to be the first man to clinch five Roland Garros titles in a row, had been expected to face a severe test from the 20-year-old world number 57. But Thiem, who trains for big matches by running through forests carrying tree trunks to build stamina, ran out of steam on Philippe Chatrier court despite showing occasional glimpses of potential. Nadal took his career record in Paris to 61 wins against a single loss and goes on to face either Leonardo Mayer of Argentina or Russia's Teymuraz Gabashvili. "Dominic is a dangerous player and I knew that if I wasn't playing well then I'd be in trouble," said Nadal. "But he is a future star, 100 percent. His level of ball is very high, he is strong on the forehand and backhand. He has everything to be a big champion." Thiem had beaten Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka in Madrid and gave 27-year-old Nadal plenty to think about in an eight-

minute opening game. But Nadal proceeded to pounce on Thiem's raw inconsistencies which saw the young Austrian break the Spaniard twice only to be broken himself seven times and commit 41 unforced errors. Maharashtra boys stun Punjab

The Maharashtra junior boys team stunned last year's runners-up and one of the tournament favourites Punjab.

K

OCHI: In a day of upsets, Maharashtra boys stunned last year’s runners up Punjab 91-73 to register their second straight win. Defending champs Delhi boys too fell to Chhattisgarh 66-22 in the 65th National Basketball Championship for Junior Men and Women at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Kadavanthra, Kochi. Already assured of their place in the quarterfinals, Delhi boys lacked the energy to compete against a hungrier Chhattisgarh side that was looking for its first win in the tournament in order to avoid relegation to the lower level (Level 2). The day undoubtedly belonged to the boys from Maharashtra. With the Maharashtra coach Nasir Ansari

telling his players to “Bindaas Jaake Khelna” (Hindi for “just go out and have fun”), the much shorter Maharashtra players tied up the taller Punjab line up in knots through all four quarters. With crisp ball movement, imaginative passing (that included numerous behind the back passes and once even through the legs of an opposing player!), multiple steals and excellent help defense, Maharashtra frustrated the much vaunted boys from the north for four straight quarters. After this match, Maharashtra and Punjab are both 2-1 in the tournament with one league match remaining. Both teams are assured of quarterfinal berths.

UMBAI: Maharashtra’s Rian Pandole marched into the semi-finals of the boy’s under-16 singles event of the Babolat 8th Ramesh Desai National Championship for boys’ and girls’ under16 and under-12, being organized by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA). The lanky Mumbai boy, firing on all cylinders scored an authoritative 6-1, 6-1 victory against eighth seed Nitin Kumar Sinha of West Bengal in a quarter-final match played in the sweltering afternoon heat at the MSLTA courts on Thursday. Pandole, who had sent out top seed Nikshep BR in the previous round on Wednesday, asserted his dominance from the beginning and called the shots throughout. In the first set he broke Sinha’s service in the fourth and sixth games while holding his service games to win the set. He contin-

ued to hold sway in the second and had three breaks in the third, fifth and seventh games to clinch the win. Pandole, who next meets another unseeded player Chandigarh’s Param Pun, who scored an upset 6-2, 6-1 win over sixth seed Shrey Gupta of Haryana. Punjab’s second seed Paramveer Singh Bajwa is the only player among the top eight to make the semis. He beat Sumit Pal Singh of Jammu and Kashmir 6-4, 7-5 to set up a semi-final meeting with unseeded Siddanth Banthia of Mahrashtra. Banthia defeated Tamil Nadu’s Manish S. 6-4, 6-3. In the girl’s under-16 competition, top seed Abinikka R. of Tamil Nadu breezed to another facile win defeating Punjab’s Sarah Dev 6-1, 6-1.Third seed Mikha Yadav of Maharashtra strolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win against Jennifer Luikham of Haryana to seal her place in the last four round.

Ferrer has made the quarter-finals of all of his last nine majors and such was the ease of his fifth win in five against Bolelli that the most challenging part of his day was fielding questions over his grooming.

In another match of the same group, Bombay Gymkhana got the better of Franco Sports by a narrow 1-0 margin. Alisha Dantes netted the lone goal of the match. New Hind, Rising Star enter the final By A Sports Reporter

M

UMBAI: Hriday Mehta and Tirth Trivedi’s impressive bowling helped New Hind beat Parle Tilak by six wickets to enter into the finals of the CIA U-10 tournament, played at the Kohinoor Cricket Academy on Thursday. In reply, New Hind’s medium pacer and man of the match holder Ayush Shinde scored a quick 28 runs. Parle Tilak’s bowlers failed to stop the sturdy reply as they reached home comfortably with six

taly captain Gianluigi Buffon claims the Azzurri's minimum target at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil is to reach the quarterfinal stages. The 2006 world champions, coached by Cesare Prandelli, finished runners-up at UEFA EURO 2012 and ended last year's FIFA Confederation Cup in third place. "I can't say with absolute certainty that we will reach the Final or the semi-finals," Buffon said in Thursday's press conference. "I believe that we are reliable team, in the sense we are able to win the games we have to win. "At times, we are also able to surprise in games where we are not

considered favourites. If we reach the quarter-finals, it will already be a good World Cup for us." The Juventus veteran goalkeeper knows Italy are going to have to overcome some very good teams if they are to be a serious threat to win the competition for the fifth time. "We are a matured team," Buffon said. "We have few limitations and for that reason, we are a reliable side. "But we have to be honest and recognise the value of other rivals. When you talk about Spain, Argentina, Brazil and Germany, they are all a step ahead of us and hence, are favourites. We are behind them,

Hawking offers a brief history of extra time L

ONDON: Bald or fair-headed players are more likely to score in a penalty shoot-out but England have little hope in the World Cup either way, according to renowned British cosmologist Stephen Hawking. The author of the bestselling 'A Brief History of Time' was commissioned by a British bookmaker to look at an even briefer 90 minutes plus extra time - and crack the secrets of World Cup success. Or, more specifically, England's lack of it since 1966. The light-hearted findings published on the Paddy Power website do not demand a doctorate to decipher even if some of them remain as mysterious as the darkest depths of the cosmos.

Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer dead at 85

T

AMPA (FLORIDA): Malcolm Glazer, the controversial American owner of English Premier League giants Manchester United, died on Wednesday. He was 85. Glazer gained a global profile through his ownership of United, one of the biggest and best supported football clubs in the world. But he was deeply unpopular with hardcore United fans after loading the club with hundreds of millions of dollars in debt following a 2005 buyout. His death was announced on the website of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers American football team, one of his other sports franchises. "The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are saddened to announce the passing of Owner/President Malcolm Glazer earlier this morning at the age of 85," the statement said. "A dynamic business leader, Glazer helped mold the Buccaneers into a model franchise and one respected league-wide."

imon Mignolet excels in everything he does. The proud holder of a degree in Political Science, the Belgium and Liverpool keeper is one of life’s achievers, and there is no place where he has been achieving more lately than between the posts for club and country. “I think he's an outstanding goalkeeper who is only going to get better and better,” enthused Brendan Rodgers, his manager at Liverpool, who were indebted in no small part to the Belgian for their second place in the English Premier League. “He has come into a huge club and replaced a legendary figure at the club in Pepe Reina. That was always going to take a bit of time,” continued Rodgers. “But over the course of the season he has made a big contribution. Simon hasn't ever cost us a game but he has certainly gained us points.” The Belgian Simon Mignolet, who kept ten clean sheets for the Anfield club during the campaign, reflected on his domestic season: “It was my first year at Liverpool and the first time in my career that I’ve played for such a big club. I’m satisfied with my first season, though I’m well aware that I can still improve a lot. “I’m only 26 and that’s still young for a goalkeeper. I don’t really have any personal goals. I just think about team goals, and we’ve achieved one by making it to the Champions League.” Though Mignolet has just one trophy on his CV – a Belgian second division championship won with Sint Truiden in 2009 – his has been a rapid ascent, from his country’s sec-

alongside France, (a side) that has a big potential, and Belgium, who could reach the semi-finals and it wouldn't be a surprise." Buffon has plenty of World Cup experience, having taken part in the last four tournaments with the Azzurri and lifted the trophy eight years ago. "The World Cup is such a strange and brief competition that not always the value of a team is respected," the 36-year-old said. "Perhaps energy, freshness and fortune makes the difference. "It will be my fifth? It's a good achievement but that doesn't mean I'm satisfied. Like in any top competition, you prepare to face it al-

Ghana coach praises attitude of players G

hana coach Kwesi Appiah has praised the unity and discipline in his squad which completed a second week of training for the World Cup and is set to be pruned for the trip to Brazil. "The unity is so great and discipline is very high. Discipline plays a big role, if you want to be successful, 100 percent lies with the players' behaviour and so far it has been good," he said in Arnhem, where the Black Stars are preparing ahead of Saturday's international warm-up against the Netherlands in Rotterdam. "There is this kind of competition, no one is sure of himself at the moment. Everybody is attentive to whatever is taught in training. Everyone tries to do whatever he can and for me, it's good for the team and I am really impressed." Appiah will drop three players and on Sunday the team will travel to Miami for the last stage of their preparations. Ghana have organised three separate training camps – at home in Accra, in the Netherlands and in the U.S. – in marked contrast to their relatively chaotic arrangements ahead of previous World Cup appearances.

The coach said in the past, players often had reasons to complain about their preparations but it was different this time around. "...the FA has done well, making sure everything they need is put in place," added Appiah in an audio interview supplied by the Ghana Football Association. "We've learned from previous World Cups and have made sure everything has been put in place so they don't have cause to complain."

ond tier to the upper reaches of the English top flight in less than five years. “I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished,” he said, taking stock of his rising fortunes. “Yes, it has come quickly, but I’ve still got a long way to go. The only thing I can do to improve is keep on working. That’s what I’ve been doing for the last five years and it’s what I’m going to carry on doing for the next five.” Dedication has long been a watchword for a player who has continued to further his education at the same time as pursuing his keeping career. In negotiating his transfer from Sint Truiden to Sunderland, the Belgian was not so much worried about his salary or getting his hands on a good car as finding out how he could carry on with his studies.

ustralia has become the first of the total 31 teams to land in Brazil for the FIFA World Cup 2014™. The Socceroos reached Brazilian soil on Wednesday at around 6pm local when they arrived at the Curitiba International Airport. “We are the underdogs. It will be a good opportunity for the Australian team to surprise, so this is all very exciting. And being in the ‘soccer country’ is an extra motivation, of course”, said midfielder Tommy Oar before the team boarded another flight - to Vitoria, in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo, where Australia’s Team Base Camp is located. “We’ve been training for the last few days and things have gone well. We still have some two more weeks to keep on training, so I think we will be well-prepared for the World Cup." Playing their third consecutive FIFA World Cup, the Socceroos are part of Group B in Brazil alongside Chile – their first opponents on 13 June in Cuiaba – and 2010 finalists Spain and the Netherlands.

Tim Cahill of the Socceroos is welcomed on the tarmac as the Socceroos arrive in Curitiba en route to Vitoria on May 28 in Espirito Santo do Pinhal, Brazil.
