Aft er oo WILL YAKUB HANG OR NOT? SC VERDICT TODAY:

THE THREE-JUDGE BENCH OF THE SUPREME COURT WILL DELIVER A FINAL VERDICT TODAY ON THE HANGING OF YAKUB MEMON By A Correspondent

A

three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will deliver today a final verdict on a plea by Yakub Memon seeking the stay of his scheduled execution tomorrow.

A two-judge bench of the court yesterday delivered a split verdict on a plea by Yakub -- the lone death convict in 1993 Mumbai blast case. It referred the matter to the Chief Justice to take a call on it. The three judges chosen by him will give their verdict.

While Justice A.R. Dave had dismissed the previous plea by Yakub Memon, Justice Kurian Joseph stayed the death warrant issued on April 30 for his execution on July 30. The final verdict will be delivered today.

Abdul Kalam opposed capital punishment A

mid debate over whether Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon should be hanged, late A P J Abdul Kalam had supported abolition of capital punishment saying that as President of India, he felt

pain in deciding on such cases as most of them had "social and economic bias". Kalam had recently responded to a Law Commission consultation paper on capital punishment and was one of the few

people who had supported abolition of death sentence. Most of the over 400 respondents had supported continuing with the provision of death penalty.

Dr Kalam was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan in 1981. Padma Vibhushan was bestowed in 1990 for his work with ISRO and DRDO by the Government of India. He was also honoured with 'Bharat Ratna' in the year 1997 for his contribution to scientific research and modernisation of defence technology in India. Kalam's birthday was declared yesterday as World Students Day. During his lifespan, Kalam had expressed his wish to be remembered as a teacher by the people. A bachelor, the former president had a hobby of playing the 'veena' (an Indian classical music instrument) and was profoundly interested in Carnatic music. Today is World Tiger’ Day. On this occasion a rare picture of tigers which appeared at an exhibition in Mumbai is being published. The photo was taken by Mr. Kamal Morarka.

Scientists successfully ‘edit’ human immune cells Scientists have used a popular genome editing technique to precisely modify a key type of human immune cell that protects the body against a wide range of diseases, from diabetes to AIDS to cancer. Researchers at the University of California - San Francisco used the genomeediting tool known as CRISPR/Cas9 to precisely modify human T cells. They were able to disable a protein on the T-cell surface called CXCR4, which can be exploited by HIV when the virus infects T cells and causes AIDS. The team also successfully shut down PD-1, a protein that has attracted intense interest in the burgeoning field of cancer immunotherapy, as scientists have shown that using drugs to block PD-1 coaxes T cells to attack tumours. The CRISPR/Cas9 system makes it possible to easily and inexpensively edit genetic information in virtually any organism. Cas9, an enzyme in the

CRISPR system that makes cuts in DNA and allows new genetic sequences to be inserted, has generally been introduced into cells using viruses or circular bits of DNA called plasmids. Then, in a separate step, a genetic construct known as single-guide RNA, which steers Cas9 to the specific spots in DNA where cuts are desired, is also placed into the cells. Until recently, editing human T cells with CRISPR/Cas9 has been inefficient, with only a relatively small percentage of cells being successfully modified. While scientists have had some success in switching off genes by inserting or deleting random sequences, they have not yet been able to use CRISPR/Cas9 to paste in (or "knock in") specific new sequences to correct mutations in T cells. A team led by first authors Kathrin Schumann, a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Alexander Marson, a UCSF Sandler Fellow, and Steven

Lin, a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of University of California, Berkeley's Jennifer Doudna, cracked these problems by streamlining the delivery of Cas9 and singleguide RNA to cells. In lab dishes, the group assembled Cas9 ribonucleoproteins, or RNPs, which combine the Cas9 protein with single-guide RNA. They then used a method known as electroporation, in which cells are briefly exposed to an electrical field that makes their membranes more permeable, to quickly deliver these RNPs to the interior of the cells.

Babies' social skills linked to learning second language

Infants' social skills play a key role in helping them learn a foreign language, a new study has found. Researchers at the Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences (I-LABS) at the University of Washington have shown for the first time that early social behaviour called gaze shifting is linked to infants' ability to learn new language sounds. Babies about 10 months

old who engaged in more gaze shifting during sessions with a foreign language tutor showed a boost in a brain response that indicates language learning. The study provides evidence that infants' social skills play a role in cracking the code of

the new language. The researchers found that the degree to which infants visually tracked the tutors and the toys they held was linked to brain measures of infant learning, showing that social behaviours give helpful information to babies

03

in a complex natural language learning situation. Gaze shifting, when a baby makes eye contact and then looks at the same object that the other person is looking at, is one of the earliest social skills that babies show.

37-year-old Hong Kong giant panda becomes world’s oldest

A female giant panda in Hong Kong has celebrated her 37th birthday - reaching the equivalent of 111 human years - making her the world's oldest panda ever in captivity, Guinness World Records has said. Jia Jia, who resides at Ocean Park in Hong Kong turned 37 yesterday and now holds the titles for Oldest panda ever in captivity and the Oldest panda living in captivity. Jia Jia was born in 1978 and arrived at the park in March 1999, and has lived there ever since. Previously, the oldest panda in captivity was Dudu, who was born in 1962 and lived for the majority of her life in Wuhan Zoo, Chengdu, also in China, until her death in 1999 aged 36 years. Jia Jia's long life is

particularly impressive as the average lifespan of giant pandas is only 18-20 years, and 30 in captivity, Guinness World Records said. Given [her] advanced years, Jia Jia [is] in satisfactory health. Jia Jia takes regular medication for various conditions such as high blood pressure and arthritic pain. Despite her poor eye

sight, Jia Jia can recognise the familiar voices of her carers, some of whom have been with her for as many as 15 years. This gives her a strong sense of security. Wild pandas were once found all over southern and eastern China and well into Myanmar and Vietnam, but they are now considered one of the world's most endangered animals.

oth the houses of the state legislature yesterday paid rich tributes to former president APJ Abdul Kalam and veteran leader and former governor R S Gavai. Both the houses were adjourned for a day after all the group leaders expressed their condolences. In the Assembly Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis moved the motion of condolence. Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Peasants and Workers Party leader Ganpatrao Deshmukh, NCP leader Ajit Pawar, Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena were prominent among those who spoke on the occasion. In the Council too CM Fadnavis moved the condolence motion. He said Kalam was a man who struggled all his life to make India a superpower. Listing out the achievements of

Kalam, Fadnavis said, “Kalam showed India the path it should tread to become a superpower and he was a person from whom new generation will take guidance for years to come. We can pay him a real tribute for making India a developed country wbringing the youth to the fore.” Expressing his condolence over Gavai's death, Fadnavis said, “The state has lost a leader who worked hard for the cause of Dalits and the backward class. The veteran Dalit leader has made Maharashtra proud with his various roles at the national level. Gavai was a father figure and his demise is certainly a personal loss to me”. In his speech, the Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde said, “Each and every family in the country has been saddened by Kalam's death. We worship Lord Ram and Lord Krishna. No relief for Mumbaikars from toll tax for another three months By Prashant Hamine

M

umbaikars and those in the vicinity might well have to wait for another three months for a decision on waiver or concession in paying toll tax at the five entry points as the state government has asked the committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary Anand Kulkarni to rework the statistical data culled out so far. Disclosing this to newspersons at his Vidhan Bhavan office, Minister for Public Works Department (PWD) Chandrakant Patil remarked that it was not possible for the government to take a final decision on toll waiver for five entry points of Mumbai by August 1. The task of hammering out a solution is now given to Minister for Public Works Department (state PSUs) Eknath Shinde. He said that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took the decision to grant further three month extension to the committee after reviewing the power point presentation. It may be recalled that prior to the October 2014 assembly elections the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

had announced it would make the state toll-free if it came to power. The government has already waived off toll tax at 53 toll plazas in the state. Besides this the government is now paying Rs 800odd crore to the contractors of 63 toll plazas where small four wheeler vehicles have been exempted from paying tax. Furthermore, the government is paying another Rs 400 odd crore to contractors of 53 toll plazas where certain vehicles have been exempted from paying toll tax. In Mumbai the issue of waiver of toll tax is related to five entry point toll plazas two toll plazas of Mulund, Airoli, Dahisar and Vashi. Patil stated that the options

being mulled include waiving off toll for smaller four wheelers and passing the burden on to the heavy vehicles. The problem before the government is that out of the total number of vehicles entering the city, 70 per cent of them are small four wheelers. He said that outright waiver of toll tax is problematic considering the fact that the agreements with the contractors end in 2029. Patil stated that if the government were to decide on outright waiver of toll tax at all the five entry points of Mumbai it will mean a burden of Rs 2,000 crore on the state exchequer. If the toll tax burden is to be passed on to the heavy vehicles then the duration of the toll charged for them will have to be extended. The government might well have to shell out another Rs 200 crore from its coffers if it opts for partial waiver applicable only to small four wheelers. It may be recalled that Rajya Sabha MP and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar had written to the government to do something about the toll tax and crowding at the five entry point toll plazas of Mumbai.

about people like Dr Ambedkar, Mahatma Phule and Shivaji Maharaj. All the good qualities of all of these great people were present in Abdul Kalam saheb. Every sector in the country will be at a loss by Kalam's death”. Shiv Sena group leader Diwakar Raote said after Jawaharlal Nehru, fondly called as Chacha Nehru, Kalam will be remembered as ''Kalam Uncle'' by children for decades to come.Education Minister Vinod Tawde said that the state government will celebrate Kalam's birth anniversary on October 15 as 'Vaachan (reading) Prerna Diwas' in schools. The initiative will help instill reading habits among children.”

Fake cops’ gang busted by Malad Police By Zuber Ansari

T

he Malad Police claimto have busted a gang of fake police officers after arresting two accused in this connection. They used to dupe people by claiming that they were cops. The arrested accused have been identified as Amit Harishankar Jalan (25) and Asif Yunus Ansari (40), who are having more than 16 cases registered against them. The activities of the gang came to light on July 16, when the complainant, Vikram Singh, approached the Malad Police after being duped by the fake cops. According to the police, the accused conducted a fake raid at the complainant's distance education coaching class at Sheesh Plaza in Malad west. The accused introduced themselves as crime branch officers and threatened Singh

that he would be booked for providing fake educational degree certificates. They then demanded Rs 5 lakh from Singh. They got one lakh rupees from Singh's ATM account, and Rs 1.5 lakh wastransferred into their account through net banking. While leaving the class, Singh alleged that the accused had damaged documents which were kept there, while they took away some. The complainant informed the police that the accused had come in a Nissan car which has also been recorded on a CCTV. Post the incident, the victim immediately approached the Malad Police and registered a case against the accused. Both the accused were booked under various sections of IPC including 420 and 386. Further investigation is on.

Yakub Memon continued his study in jail By Asif Rizvi

T

he conviction in 1993 Bombay serial blasts case did not affect Yakub Memon, chartered accountant by profession, from pursuing his further studies. It was his hobby to gain knowledge and pursue education. “Yakub studied literature from 2010 to 2012 and pursued Political Science during 2012 -14. He completed his Literature degree in April 2013. Yakub also passed his MA in Political Science in December 2014 but, I guess, the degree has yet not been conferred on him,” said a family friend of Memon. In an interview that ADC published on Monday, Yakub's wife said, “Yakub wants his daughter to study hard and do an MBA.” Yakub has done his MA in English Literature and Political Science, while being an inmate in Nagpur jail, through Indira Gandhi National Open University

Yakub Memon ID (IGNOU). Memon's plea in Supreme Court on Tuesday divided two Supreme Court judges who today asked the Chief Justice of India to take a call. The 53-year-old chartered accountant is scheduled to be hanged at Nagpur jail on Thursday.

The razed portions of the extensions of the Hotel White House at Mira Road.

By Suresh Golani

A

fter much dilly-dallying the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) finally woke up from its slumber and initiated action against Hotel White House situated in the Sai Baba Nagar area of Mira Road on Tuesday. However, only the extended portions and extensions accompanying the original structure was razed

amidst tight police cover by the anti-encroachment unit led by Chandrakant Borse. “Notices have been issued and after following the due process of law including clearance of legal hurdles, action will be taken against the original structure,” assured Borse. It may be recalled that two local scribes, Shashi Sharma and Santosh Mishra who had gone to cover a police raid at White House bar on 16, July

were brutally attacked by bar-operator-Ganesh Kamath and his cronies. In a shocking turn of events, the editor of a local Hindi newspaper identified as-Raghvendra Dubey alias Pravin (38) was found murdered, a few meters away from the bar next morning. Demanding action against the bar and all such illegally operating institutions, the media fraternity had staged a series of vocif-

erous agitations against the MBMC. As per highly placed sources, the White House bar is owned by slain gangsterO.P. Singh- a former aide of fugitive underworld don Chhota Rajan. Singh was killed inside the Nashik Central jail in September 2002. His wife had leased out the bar to Ganesh Kamath. However both were entangled in a bitter tenancy dispute.

Govt moves bill seeking backdoor entry for its nominees in APMC bodies CITY

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 2015

n the last week, the rain Gods have been generous with the city. The water levels in the lakes are now close to 50 per cent of the total requirement of the city. While the authorities at BMC had expressed satisfaction as the lakes overflowed during the torrential rainfall on June 19, the dry spell had them worried.

n a bid to gain control over cooperative marketing bodies like Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMCs) in the state through the backdoor, the state government is to pilot a bill seeking amendment to the APMC Act that will enable the government to appoint four technical experts on these marketing committees. Speaking to news persons here yesterday at his Vidhan Bhavan office Minister for Marketing Chandrakant Patil stated that the government intends to pass the amendment Minister for Marketing bill today in both the houses of Chandrakant Patil

RESTING THE CART AT DUSK: Before last week during the dry spell, water was sufficient for only 85 days. The condition has however improved as the water levels now have water for 180 days. The city needs nearly 14 lakh million litres. Water level in all lakes has reached 6,75,123 million litres. The level at this time last year was 3,73,244 million litres. The city consumes 3,750 million litres of water per day. Had it not been for the recent rainfall, there was a possibility of five to ten per cent of water cut throughout the city.

After a day-long hardwork pulling the hand-cart distributing and supplying various goods to a whole lot of destinations, these cart pullers assemble at their meeting point at Kalbadevi to stack up the hand-carts at sunset everyday.

SP chief demands coastal road be named after ex-prez Kalam By A Special Correspondent

T

he Samajwadi Party yesterday demanded that the 35-km long coastal road, which will connect the island city with Kandivali in western suburb, should be named after former president, the late APJ Abdul Kalam. Speaking to reporters outside Vidhan Bhavan, the state Samajwadi Party president Abu Azmi said, “I will write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, requesting them to name the ambitious project after Kalam. The former president, Kalam was a great person and naming the coastal road after him will be a fit-

the state legislature. The said amendment bill seeks to appoint experts in the field of agriculture, agricultural processing, agricultural marketing, law, economics or commerce as special invitees on the marketing committees so that the marketing committees will be benefited by the knowledge of such experts. Such experts will have the right to take part in meetings of such marketing committees, but shall not have the right to vote. The government is likely to face stiff opposition in the legislative council where it is in a numerical minority. Sources disclosed that if this happens

MLA wrote to the CM demanding that the road be named after late Sena supremo Bal Thackeray. Sunil Prabhu, in his letter, had said that by naming the coastal road after Thackeray, people visiting Mumbai from across the world would become aware of his contribution to the city. However, with Azmi's demand a new controversy is likely to come to the fore. Sena has not yet reacted to this new demand. The coastal road project had become a fresh topic for the BJP and Shiv Sena to squabSP president Abu Azmi ble upon, as both parties claimed credit for it. Against ting tribute to him. this backdrop Samajwadi Azmi's demand came Party's demand has created three weeks after a Shiv Sena a flutter in political circles.

then the government might well be forced to promulgate an ordinance. Besides this if the government does not have its way then the government might also contemplate in postponing elections to some of these cooperative marketing bodies by another six months. Sources in the government disclosed that as per constitutional provisions even if the bill is not passed or referred to the house committee the government is well within its rights to pass the bill in the legislative assembly. Speaking to news persons at Vidhan Bhavan here senior Congress MLC Manikrao Thakre remarked that while

in opposition the BJP had slammed the Congress for issuing an ordinance. He further disclosed that the Congress has moved several amendments to the bill and that it be referred to the joint select committee of the house for scrutiny. Thakre slammed the government alleging that it wanted to appoint people with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) background who otherwise have no chance of winning direct elections to marketing committees of such APMCs which are mostly controlled by the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) representatives.

Pak pushed terror into Punjab W

ho were the four terrorists who carried out a violent mission against India? There is now firm evidence that they have come from Pakistan. This is the second murder mission the ISI has sent to India. This time it was on a smaller scale. Does the timing of the mission tell a tale? India was celebrating Kargil ‘Vijay Diwas’. The Pakistan terrorists could not have beenhappy about this. For them, it could have been the provocation for revenge. And then, India appears to be taking Pakistan firing on the border seriously. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has declared that India would give a fitting reply if the border firing continues. In the border firing, Kashmiri civilians are being killed. India has evidently retaliated and this has not been to the liking of the Pak army. And it will not be a surprise if friends of Tiger Memon in Pakistan decided to show their sympathy with regard to the verdict of hanging of his brother Yakub Memon in India. The four terrorists could not have courted certain death in India unless they felt they were carrying out some holy mission. They could not have come from anywhere else but Pakistan. It was a mission sent by ISI and other terrorist organisations.

HE privilege motion against Robert Vadra could prove to be an acid test for him as well as the Gandhi family. BJP MPs on the privileges committee of Parliament are already rubbing their hands with glee in anticipation of summoning the Gandhi son-in-law for tough cross examination. The committee has 15 members of which 7 are from the BJP and 2 from its NDA allies. The Congress has just one member in Jyotiraditya Scindia. Consequently, the BJP has the upper hand. Ruling party MPs claim they are under pressure from their constituents to “punish’’ Vadra. They say the committee will definitely summon him and quiz him closely about his Facebook post. The motion said the post amounted to contempt of Parliament. Judging by the mood in the BJP camp, Vadra could be in for a hard time. The privileges committee has the powers to punish him with a jail sentence. However, till date, it has used these powers sparingly. It has sent only three persons to prison over the past six decades. Two were punished in 1967 for throwing leaflets into the House. A third was punished for throwing a slipper into the Lok Sabha in 1983. On the other hand, the committee has let off several who have faced privilege motions, like former ambassador to the US Ronen Sen and the editor of an Urdu paper. Vadra’s fate rests in the hands of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan who will have to rule whether or not to send the BJP motion against Vadra to the privileges committee.

LS Speaker’s move irks some MPs

L

OK SABHA Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has again ruffled feathers among MPs, this time even in her own party, BJP. The reason: she shut down the smoking section in Central Hall and handed it over to Parliament Secretariat stenographers. The only issue that unites MPs from West Bengal, from Left to Right, cutting across party lines is the right to smoke. The most vociferous protests against Mahajan’s decision came from Bengal MPs, many of who are heavy smokers. BJP MP Chandan Mitra led a delegation which included CPI(M)’s Ritabrata Banerjee to meet Mahajan to demand the reopening of the smoking room. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury was also supposed to join this unique bonding between the Left and Right but was caught up in a meeting. Nevertheless, he conveyed his

E

VERY intelligent person comes to a stage in his life sooner or later when he begins to question himself as to what purpose there is in life, in being on earth. ‘Why am I here? What am I to accomplish in life?’ he asks. No doubt the moment this question has arisen in a person he has taken his first step in the path of wisdom. Before, whatever he did, not being conscious of his life’s purpose, he remained discontented. Whatever be his occupation, his condition in life, whether he is wise or foolish, learned or illiterate, there is always discontent. He may have success or failure, but the desire that his life’s purpose should be accomplished remains, and unless it is accomplished a person cannot be satisfied. That is why many people who are successful in business, doing very well in their profession, comfortable in their domestic life, and popular in society, yet remain dissatisfied because they do not know the purpose of their life. After knowing the purpose of life we may be handicapped by many things, we may lack means, but the conditions will be favorable to go forward, in spite of all. When someone has found his life’s purpose, no matter how difficult life is for him nor how many hindrances he has to contend with, from that moment

solidarity to the cause to Mahajan’s office. The MPs were particularly annoyed because the closure of the smoking room meant that they had to stand out in the hot courtyard with their cigarettes. Mahajan was not very sympathetic to the demand of the smoker MPs till they pointed out that she had contravened the rules by permitting Parliament staff to sit in an area meant exclusively for elected representatives. She changed her tune after that and has restored MPs’ smoking privileges.

Parl canteen food subsidy issue

A

NOTHER person who has got MPs up in arms is BJD MP Jay Panda. He has ruffled feathers in Parliament by launching a campaign for MPs to give up subsidized food in the Parliament House canteen. Panda has sent out a letter to several MPs and has also been verbally lobbying with others to sign a memorandum asking for the subsidy to be withdrawn. But he doesn’t seem to have found much support. Some MPs are annoyed by what they see as a self aggrandizement exercise by Panda. Others are irritated because they say HERE was much speculation among MPs the food in the Parliament canteen is of such who persuaded Mahajan to close the poor quality that MPs should actually be paid smoking room. It seems a very senior BJP MP to eat it! Remember that not too long ago, Jaya was behind the move. In fact, this MP has Bachchan and some other MPs had protested been campaigning for quite some time to about being served stale food that they were make Parliament completely smoke free. served after which they fell ill.

POWER TALK Arati R. Jerath He succeeded in getting smoking banned in the corridors and in Central Hall. Interestingly, the ban was imposed by Somnath Chatterjee of the CPI(M) when he was Lok Sabha Speaker during the UPA’s first tenure. After protests from MPs of his own Left Parties, Chatterjee earmarked a section of Central Hall as a smoking zone. The BJP MP has been trying to scuttle that too. Mahajan seems to have been sympathetic to his cause, particularly when he pointed out that stenographers should be seated near the two Houses of Parliament. What better place than the smoking room inside Central Hall which is between the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha? The MP has had to beat a hasty retreat after Mahajan realized that she had been talked in by him to interfere in a privilege MPs guard most zealously.

The purpose of life there is nothing he will not withstand, no sacrifice he will not make, nothing he will not endure. He will wait with patience all his life, and if he does not succeed in this life he will wait even till the hereafter, happy because he is accomplishing his life’s purpose. When a person knows, ‘I am here for this particular purpose,’ that knowledge in itself gives a great strength of conviction. There is a story told of the Prophet Muhammad. At the time when the Prophet, who was

MATTER & SPIRIT born for that particular purpose in life, felt a kind of restlessness, a dissatisfaction with everything in life, he thought he had better go into the forest, into the wilderness, into the mountains and sit there alone to get in touch with himself, to find out why there was that yearning after something he did not know. He asked his wife if she would allow him that solitude which his soul longed for, and she agreed. Then he went into the wilderness and

FTER more than 10 years in Parliament, Jaya Bachchan is still fighting for official accommodation. She has finally got a house on Safdarjung Lane but the previous occupant, Akhilesh Das of the BSP, keeps seeking extensions to stay on for some reason or the other. His last excuse was his children’s school examinations. But the exams are over and he still hasn’t moved. It’s most frustrating for Bachchan. During the UPA’s tenure, the Congress dilly-dallyed over her accommodation because of the feud between the Bachchans and the Gandhis. The government has changed now but even after several appeals to urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu who controls official accommodation in Delhi, Bachchan remains homeless. Naidu was quite prompt in evicting MPs of other parties like Ajit Singh of the RLD and several Congress leaders. But he seems to be soft on BSP MPs. Of course, Bachchan is not quite homeless. When she comes to Delhi for the Parliament sessions, she stays in her in-law’s house in Gulmohar Park. But as she herself points out, it is most inconvenient. When her famous family visits, whether it’s husband Amitabh, son Abhishekh or daughter-in-law Aishwarya, there’s always a huge traffic jam in Gulmohar Park, causing tremendous inconvenience to residents. An official bungalow in Lutyen’s Delhi would cocoon her and her family from the prying eyes of fans and followers. sat there for days together. And when the vibrations of the physical body and mind, which are always upset and in turmoil in the midst of the world, calmed down, and when his mind became quiet and his spirit was tranquil, when the heart of the Prophet became restful, he began to feel in touch with all nature there, the space, the sky, the earth. And then it seemed as if everything was talking to him, as if the water and the clouds were talking. He was in communication with the whole world, with the whole of life. Then the word came to the Prophet: ‘Cry out in the Name of thy Lord.’ This is the lesson of idealism: not only being in touch with nature, but idealizing the Lord. In these days there is the great drawback that when people become very intelligent they lose idealism. If they want to find God they want to find Him in figures. There are many who would rather meditate than worship, than pray. In this way there has always been conflict between the intellectual person and the idealistic person. The Prophet was taught as the first thing to idealize the Lord. And when the ideal he thus made became his conception of God, then in that conception God awakened. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 2015

‘WINGS OF FIRE’ EXTINGUISHED AS one would read the dates on APJ Abdul Kalam’s tombstone-(15 October 1931 – 27 July 2015), one would recall the famous poem “The Dash” by Linda Ellis. In between the dates of birth and death there is a dash. What really matters is how well we live in that dash and Kalam is a perfect example of that. He lived a simple life, contributed with his actions and with positive thoughts inspired the entire nation with his 'Kalam'(for pen in Hindi) and spread joy through his igniting speeches among children/students. I am sure the flowers at Mughal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan would refuse to bloom sensing their most lovable occupant who said 'See the flower, how generously it distributes perfume and honey. When it's work is done, it falls away quietly. Try to be like the flower, unassuming despite all it's qualities.' All birds of Rameshwaram would stop in their trajectory midair to pay their last respects to the man who was inspired during his schooldays by high-flying birds and became India’s most distinguished aeronautical scientist.

INDIA'S great and noblest personality, APJ Abdul Kalam has gone behind the screen of the universe leaving a unique message to entire world as to how one should be in living a life for the sake of fellow citizens and LETTER OF THE DAY modest model to the entire world. He made India proud in Aero Space world competing with the so called super powers in the world. Our country should be proud of such a great personality.

Kalam had to face all odds to study physics and aerospace engineering but somehow overcame and later on worked as a scientist and science administrator chiefly at the Defence Research and Development Organization and the Indian Space Research Organization. He collapsed after he felt uneasy while delivering a lecture at the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RG-IIM) and succumbed to a cardiac arrest. OUR nation lost a noble, humble, simple, intelligent, inspiring leader, APJ Abdul Kalam. It is very rare to find a person like him. Let us all pay homage to the bereaved family. Negative people have been spreading rumours about his death for quite some time, but when it happened really, we have had to cross check the information 10 times before we confirm the message. Sincere prayers for his noble soul to rest in 'eternal peace' and heart-felt condolences to the family in this grief-stricken moment. — Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion

APROPOS 'Abdul Kalam passes away' (ADC, July 28), it was indeed an extremely shocking news for India and the world at large to have lost a space luminary which is an irreparable national loss. I had the rare opportunity to hear his speech live in an elite gathering at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai along with school students, the ones he used to love always. A great human being whose humbleness can not be compared. One of the most brilliantly talented Presidents India ever had. We must thank the former Indian PM and an unblemished seasoned statesman Atal Behari Bajpai, who was instrumental in installing him as the 11 th Indian President. In the space research and technology his contribution is enormous by which India has been placed in one of the top members in the global space club today. May his great soul rest in eternal peace.

He Was A Missile Man He Was A Marvelous Man He Was A Modern Man He Was A Music Man He Was A Scientific Man He Was A Children's Man He Was A Students' Man He Was A Simple Man He Was A Nimble Man He Was A Humble Man He Was A Noble Man Above All He Was A Gentleman — Lakshman Sundar, Vashi

EXTREMELY saddened to learn the demise of India's 11th President - Bharat Ratna APJ Abdul Kalam. An awesome and unforgettable personality, the man who made the world take note of India through Missile Program is no more. The Architect of Pokharan 2, an ideal scientist, a people's president was indeed a selfless person. His thought provoking quote 'Thinking is the capital, Enterprise is the way and hard work is the solution' should inspire today's young generation seeking shortcut to success. May the departed soul rest in everlasting peace. — Prof. K.H. Karkera, Mumbai

Despite holding the highest office of our land APJ Abdul Kalam was humble and down-to-earth Instead of declaring holidays to academic institutions, the Central Government should have instructed all the educational institutions to keep the institutions open and asked the faculty and students to involve on debates/ discussions/ presentations about Kalam and his achievements. That would’ve been a real tribute to a person who always loves education. The way the birthday (September 05) of Sarvepalli Radhakrishna is celebrated as Teachers Day, the government should declare the birthday (October 15) of Abdul Kalam as ‘Technology Day’ and celebrate it with science fairs, technological discussions and debates and at the same time should not spend money lavishly on unnecessary things like high tea, lunch, etc.

A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India and a pioneer of the country's space and missile programmes was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1997, the Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and the Padma Bhushan in 1981. India enters the space club by putting the Rohini satellite in the near earth orbit with the first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III), developed under the stewardship of Dr. Kalam. As the chief of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, he was responsible for the development — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili and operationalisation of AGNI and PRITHVI Missiles. Abdul Kalam was an institution- and team-builder who always wanted IT is deeply saddening that the India to be strong and self-reliant. cruel hands of death snatched our Kalam was always accessible to country’s supreme human being

He will be largely missed by one and all in the political circle, science and DRDO and all Institutions he was connected with. RIP, Abdul Kalam Saab. — K.V. Raman, Malad

THE news of death of our Honourable Ex- President Abdul Kalam is shocking. Once having met him for few minutes I have short but sweet and unforgettable memories of his meeting. Luckily a snap with him is with him, which shall always be in my personal library. So powerful was his impact on me. Will ever a person like him take birth in this century is unthinkable. He is a man of the century (after independence). His vision of life was more than a true scientist. He was really a non political person. He understood nation’s problems much better than

pact at 'Rashtrapati Bhavan' like APJ Kalam did and the widely read former President was an institution in himself as far as knowledge was concerned, be it science, literature, judiciary or history. His stature was gigantic but he was humble and down to earth who never belonged to the VVIP culture in spite of holding the highest office of our land. Work was worship for him and he inspired fellow countrymen to dream so that ambitions hidden in the aspirations could be achieved when there is a goal set in one's mind. Often referred to as the 'Missile man', APJ Kalam, who uplifted the values of Rashtrapati Bhavan and gave a new meaning to the post of President which hitherto was considered cosmetic before he held the office. Aakhri Salaan to Kalam from each of his countrymen as we bid our final good bye to the noble soul. R.I.P (Return If Possible), Kalam Sir!

RIP, APJ Abdul Kalam, the missile man of India. He was, is and will be the most loved President of India. I never met him, never wrote letters to him, never read 'Wings of Fire', yet I feel like I've lost someone very close. The impact he had on us was just massive. Passing away of Kalam all of a sudden is loss of one of the few sane voices in our country. He was simple, knowledgeable, wise, unassuming in his life and in death too. We are poorer today in his loss and very very sad as if losing a dear family elder brother. We are lucky to have been around when he was President of our country. May God bestow his pious soul eternal peace n bless us with a few more gems like him in the days to come. India loses one of her greatest sons and you will remain one of the greatest inspiring personalities ever, in our minds. We are all in one voice and agree that it is a great loss to the nation, science and humanity but what a way to end the journey or may be to begin a new one.

HOTEL STAFFERS IMMOBILE AS MOBILE THIEF STRIKES IT RICH CITY

Uncle John's 'ghost' provides additional time to make off with expensive phones

By Zuber Ansari

A

n unidentified mobile robber entered a mobile shop in Vakola and decamped with expensive mobile phones worth over Rs one lakh. Interestingly, the robber checked all the phones before robbing the expensive ones including battery and charger. A common wall exists between M S Mobile Collection shop and Food Land Hotel, and the thief forcefully broke into the shop after breaking the backside wooden wall of the mobile shop. On the day of incident, when a robber entered the shop at around 03.00 hours, the staffers of hotel Food Land were roused after hearing a loud noise, but they did not go to see what is happening inside the Mobile shop which is besides their hotel because they scared and

thought the place was taken over by Uncle John's ''Ghost''. John had passed away a day before the robbery.

The hotel staffers in fact discussed the issue with each other, but no one had the guts to see what was happening at the shop just because

of their overworked imagination regarding Uncle John's ‘ghost'’. According to shop owner Alaududdin Shah, ''I had closed my shop for two days due to a family function, but when I opened the shop on Sunday I found everything is littered all around the place, I found all my expensive phones which came for repairing are missing and cheap mobile phones are lying untouched. When I inquire with the Food Land hotel staffers because of the common wall between my shop and Hotel, I was shocked when they said, they knew some one is inside the shop but they did not dare to go in because of the ghost.'' “If they had gone to the spot then the robber may have been arrested and my mobile phones would not have been robbed, I have lodge an FIR against unidentified robber. “ While cops of Vakola Police station said, on the basis of complaint an FIR has been lodged and on the basis of CCTV footage of cameras installed near the shop, we are proceeding with the investigation.

SIES College, Sion students pay homage to APJ Abdul Kalam

Abdul Kalam opposed capital punishment Continued from pg 1 « In his response to the paper, Kalam had said capital punishment was one of the most difficult tasks for him as President. A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court today delivered a split verdict on a plea by Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, the lone death convict in 1993 Mumbai blasts case, seeking stay of his scheduled execution on July 30 and referred the matter to the Chief Justice to take call on it. While Justice A R Dave dismissed his plea, Justice Kurian Joseph stayed the death warrant issued on April 30 for his execution on July 30. Quoting from his book "Turning Points", Kalam had said "one of the more difficult tasks for me as President was to decide on the issue of confirming capital punishment awarded by courts... To my surprise... Almost all cases which were pending had a social and economic

bias. "This gave me an impression that we were punishing the person who was least involved in the enmity and who did not have a direct motive for committing the crime," he had said. The former President, however, said there was of course one case where he found that the lift operator had in fact committed the crime of raping and killing the girl without doubt. "In that case I affirmed the sentence," he had said. He was referring to the case of Dhananjoy Chatterjee who was executed by hanging for the rape and murder of an 18-year- old girl at her apartment in Bhowanipur on 5 March, 1990. The Commission had called a day-long meet earlier this month on death penalty to conclude the process of consultation. A final report would be submitted to the Supreme Court sometime next month based on the written submissions and the consultation.

EW DELHI: A P J Abdul Kalam was a 'rashtra-ratna' (nation's gem) and the best tribute to him would be to realise his dreams for the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday said as the nation mourned the demise of the former President. Speaking at a condolence meeting of the BJP parliamentary party, Modi described Kalam as an "ordinary man with an extraordinary personality" who gave the best to every position he held. Kalam was a 'rashtra-ratna' (nation's gem) first and 'rashtrapati' (President) later, he said, and recalling the former President's humble origins, noted that his life was an example of what a person can achieve. "A rare sparkling gem has disappeared.... He sold newspapers in childhood and today newspapers across the world are full of reports about him. He was a rare gem with

Modi said Kalam always called himself a teacher irrespective of the high positions he held and began teaching immediately after he demitted the President's office and breathed his last in Shillong among students. Talking about the former President's roots in Tamil Nadu, the Prime Minister said language at times works as a barrier but it was the speciality of Kalam's character that no one felt it when they were with him. ATNA/BHOPAL: As a wave of tributes and encomiums poured in after the death of APJ Abdul Kalam, an Agricultural college in Bihar was today named after the former President while a chapter on his life is to be taught in schools in Madhya Pradesh. With some states and his wellwishers initiating steps to perpetuate the memory of Kalam, a demand was made by Samajwadi Party to name a proposed 35-km long coastal road which will run along Mumbai’s western coast from Nariman Point in South Mumbai to Kandivali in western suburbs after him. Paying tribute to the 'people's President' in a way that matched his ideals, Kerala State Women's Devel-

opment Corporation, under the state Social Justice Department, has decided to work on August 2, a Sunday. KSWDC Managing Director P T M Sunish said the decision was taken to fulfil a wish of Kalam, who had urged that a holiday be not declared on his death, but to work an extra day. Several schools across the country also observed a minute's silence in memory of the former President while top scientists who were closely associated with Kalam during his stint in ISRO recalled that he was a "very great nationalist". Paying rich tributes to Kalam, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar named Kisanganj Agriculture college after him.

EW DELHI: "Don't take rest after your first victory because if you fail in second, more lips are waiting to say that your first victory was just luck." These were the words of late President A P J Abdul Kalam which he lived by till the last moment. 83-year-old Kalam, who collapsed while delivering a lecture at IIM, Shillong, and died, was a daring President who undertook a submarine sortie, flew Sukhoi jet, visited Siachen glacier, world's highest battlefield and interacted with troops at the Line of Control. But probably none as daring as a night-time flight from Aizawl airport that took off after the runway was illuminated with lanterns and Pics: PTI

torches. This occurred one evening in 2005 when Kalam, always wearing a genial smile, had completed all his official engagements during his visit to Mizoram and was scheduled to leave the next morning. But a restless Kalam decided to take off for Delhi at night, one of his senior aides recalled. The local IAF station's head was summoned and informed of the President's wish to fly to the national capital as his work in Mizoram was over. "But there are no facilities for taking off from the airport at night," the IAF official said, thinking the matter was settled. However, his explanation did not cut ice with Kalam, who retorted: "What if there is an emergency? Will the IAF wait for the morning? Tell them I have to take off and all necessary arrangements should be made." His aides went to the IAF official and conveyed the message from Kalam, who as President was also the supreme commander of the armed forces. The IAF commander immediately got in touch with his seniors in Delhi, who did not come to his rescue and instead asked him to comply with the orders of the "missile man". Finally, Kalam had his way and IAF personnel lit up the runway with lanterns, flaming torches and bonfires to facilitate the take-off, the aide said. President's aides too were concerned about his decision to take off at night from an airport that had only basic equipment and privately asked IAF officials whether such a flight would be safe. The answer from an IAF official was enough to send a chill down their spines -- "you can take off but there may be some problems if you have to return". At around 9 pm, the Presidential Boeing took off with Kalam and his entourage of 22.

10 Rajaji Marg mourns in despair Day before death, Kalam enquired N about elder brother’s health EW DELHI: Stone's throw away from the majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan, 10 Rajaji Marg today exuded the sort of despair and gloom that one does not associate with its late occupant, former President A P J Abdul Kalam, known for his vivacity and optimism. As the coffin carrying Kalam's body was softly taken down from the gun carriage, the jaws of Mohan (26) stiffened, for it was difficult for him to stand the sight of his "hero", wrapped in tricolour, lying motion less. "He (Kalam) was my inspiration and which is why I decided to pursue civil services. He was not only the people's president but also the people's poet. The news is just not sinking in," a stoic Mohan said, adding that he's been waiting to get a glimpse of Kalam since 6.30 AM. Hundreds like him, anticipation writ large on their faces, started

gathering in front of Kalam's residence since morning, even before the special flight carrying his mortal remains had taken off from Guwahati. The diversity of the crowd, comprising a large number of youth, children, women and the elderly, many of them ailing, was perhaps testimony to the popularity of the 'people s president', cutting across sections of the society. Prakash Kulkarni (62), suffering from oral cancer, insisted that he paid homage to Kalam for one last time despite being sick. "He wanted to see him for the last time," said his daughter Pradnya, a medico, who was accompanying him. Afternoon Despatch & Courier

Says Aldrina Fernandes, Environment Officer, Meluha The Fern, (The Fern Hotels and Resorts)

I

did my Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Fergusson College and I am an accredited professional of the Indian Green Building Council. I have been brought up in Goa, a beautiful state with pristine beaches and greenery all around. Over a period of time while I was growing up, I noticed several alarming changes in the state of the environment in the name of development. I realised that much of what we call development is actually destroying the environment. Goa is a very beautiful and exotic place and it was becoming a victim of development. This prompted me to take up environmental science as a career option to make a significant positive difference. I am immensely passionate about conserving the environment. I like harnessing the creative force of business and people to transform the market and engage the masses in sustainability. Education is very important. Today we have colleges that offer graduation in environmental studies. My education has helped me gain a thorough perspective about environmentalism and its underlying concerns. Due to the diversity of my study I have been acquainted with principles of sustainability, global certification norms, environmental law, pollution, associated technologies to measure and control the same, biodiversity and habitat management etc. The most awakening part of my education were the conservation field trips, where we were given an opportunity to practically study the ethos, conflicts facing the

co-ordinating intra-department sustainability practices; developing, implementing and monitoring environmental strategies, policies and programmes that promote sustainable development; communication of the sustainability program across all verticals through reporting, media articles, press releases; responsibility of getting both hotels externally certified as Ecotel (HVS); developing relationships with guests of the hotel, clients, suppliers, employees, non -governmental organizations, government and local bodies and other stakeholders to better business and drive sustainable goals of the organization; organizing Corporate Social Responsibility activities, fundraising, public consultation programs, carbon reduction initiatives of the hotel, adherence to legislative requirements and employee environment education. My field is a blend of hospitality and sustainability. It is wonderful to work for an organization that has set systems and a professional environment. Another rewarding feature of my work is to assist in creating a paradigm shift towards sustainability in the organization and society at large. Environmental consciousness is now increasing in the country, but it still needs to be heightened. Often, that is a challenge in execution of people driven programs. Other challenges or opportunities include finding a right balance between lucrative and sustainable solutions. My education has been my best investment. Also specialized courses from reputed institutions require investments for the quality of education they offer. The remuneration for a fresher can differ from organization to organization. Non-governmental organization pay less but offer rewarding work and flexibility, whereas larger organizations especially the multinasanctuaries/biosphere reserves and of coming up ly varied role and one that usually entails a range of tional companies pay more depending on the skills of with sustainable solutions; they were a real eye-open- strategic tasks, such as: overseeing, directing and lead- the individual and industry standards. and talent include heightened environmental sensitivity, excellent communication and leadership skills, and augmented ability to accept responsibility among others. My future plan is to further drive sustainability by engaging, empowering and inspiring others to unleash their potential to make a difference. Today our country and the world are focused on preserving the environment. At last we have woken up to the alarm bells. The subject is finally receiving its due importance and positive steps are being taken to preserve the environment. Many organisations have separate departments dedicated to the environment. Therefore there is tremendous scope for a good career in environmental studies. The biggest satisfaction I derive from my career is that I am contributing something positive to my country and to the world at large. I am proud to be an agent of change and change for the better. My advice for those who wish to pursue this profession is to gain technical knowledge from diverse sources, be passionate, be creative and innovate. It is very important that you choose a career that you are interested in to do full justice to it. Also you will enjoy working and put in your best effort if you like the subject. It is important that you are passionate about the environment if you are going to work to preserve it. The current time is an exciting time for new ideas, new technologies and processes, creating new markets, making new investments and taking advantage of new opportunities. This field is all about us enjoying our relationship with nature and creating a sustainable future for the present generation and for those to come. We have spent years in eroding the environment and degrading it. It is time we arrest this onslaught on our environment and preserve it. It is our duty and obligation to give a better world to the generations to come. It is about making our future and life better. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

What should be the preparation strategy? The entire syllabus should be divided into two parts viz Class IX & X. Firstly, students needs to focus on NTSE Stage – I. For that one could adopt the following approach: Class IX Syllabus: Mostly this part poses a challenge, reason being students tend to forget the concepts over a period of time. Hence, one should have a proper revision plan leading up to the exam. If you think you have few grey areas fix them now. Class X Syllabus:You would have covered some portion of the syllabus by now. The remaining syllabus must be dealt with appropriately. You should also cover a few advanced levels of current topics to gain complete insight. Alongside, prepare good quality revision notes. Try to finish the entire syllabus by the end of September 2015. So that you will be left with 4 weeks (approximately) before the exam to do the revision from your notes. From now on, get into testing and assessment mode. Rigorous practice, solving of test paper and analyzing performance holds the key. Do not think STAGE – II that you are yet to finish the syllabus. ften forgetting the common phrase ‘Never judge a book by its cover, because a plain cover, might hold a beautiful story’, our society seems to judge women by their appearance. People don’t take too long to perceive a woman with short hair as modern and liberal whereas a woman with tied up or long hair as old fashioned and conservative. Nihar Naturals wants to eliminate this bias towards women through its music video featuring Vidya Balan and four top TV stars of Bengal. The Nihar music video is

Well-known for her award winning movies in which she has played the role of the strong woman protagonist, actress Vidya Balan tries to propagate this agenda through the music video as a ‘Sutradhar’. “I have been associated with Nihar for over five years and I am extremely glad to be with a brand that believes in encouraging women to enable them to achieve their full potential. I feel women are judged all the time, they are judged by the length of their hair, the clothes they wear, the way they talk and the way they walk,” says Vidya Balan.

‘I am finally getting commercial roles’

S

he has made a career out of portraying complex characters but actress Richa Chadha is happy that finally she is being offered commercial roles. Fresh from the success of "Masaan", the actress is now busy with Pooja Bhatt's "Cabaret". "It is a great part and I am really happy that I finally got a commercial role in the industry. Earlier, they would shy away from offering me mainstream characters," Richa said. The actress, who started her career with Dibakar Banerjee's "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!", has already touched many hearts with her poignant portrayal of an ambitious small town girl in "Masaan", who unwittingly gets caught in a web of corruption. Richa said she will continue to play roles that are different despite the stereotyping of such actors. "I am trying to pick roles that are interesting to me and are different so that I can continue to do good work. I don't want to be slotted into a particular part. I want to be versatile. "Right now, my only slot is that I am a good actor or I am an off-beat actor. I can live with that. But I can't live with the tag that I am good only for specific roles," she said. There were reports that "Cabaret" is based on Helen's life but Richa denied it. "It's not on Helen. The rumours started after I was spotted reading a book on Helen. I was reading it generally and people presumed that I am going through it because 'Cabaret' is based on it." Richa is taking special classes to master the dance for the movie, which also stars Gulshan Devaiah.

"I give credit to my mom for inspiring and encouraging me to take sports seriously. She was a professor of bio-chemistry and at the age of 60 when she retired she started trekking. The ramp star hails from a family of doctors and professors. As a child he was asked to leave sports and concentrate more on studies, but his mother always supported his involvement with athletics. "The kind of encouragement I had as a child to continue sports was brilliant. Like any other family, my people asked me to stress more on studies rather than swimming. After the FRP, states and discoms did not follow through fully with measures to improve financial discipline and commercial orientation. The FRP, thus, provided only a liquidity respite. Discoms will continue to face liquidity pressure till there are appropriate tariff hikes and a significant reduction in aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses from the current level of 25.4%. CRISIL believes significant efforts to augment domestic coal production and improvement in the ability of discoms to sign long-term PPAs are critical going forward. While the government has taken some positive steps to improve fuel availability through coal block auctions and

D

espite “delayed reforms in the economy and concerns across the globe, the Indian economy is doing reasonably well with basic fundamentals showing a strong foothold. This has had a positive impact on the office market that did see a turnaround in 2014 and the pace continues in 2015. Although Mumbai holds a mixed portfolio of occupiers, media consulting, ecommerce and manufacturing sectors are showing a perceptible positive traction. Going forward, we expect Mumbai to clock office transactions of 7.7 million sq ft during 2015”. The Residential market on the other hand is still reeling under tremendous pressure with drastic drop in new launches at the back of falling demand. The recovery of the residential market does not seem eminent until end 2015 and we expect sales to be in the range of 63, 000 units which is marginally below the

2014 levels,” says Dr. Samantak Das, Chief Economist & National Director - Research, Knight Frank India. He was speaking about the just launched third edition of Knight Frank's flagship half yearly report India Real Estate, which presents a comprehensive analysis of the residential and office market performance of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region for the period between January–June 2015 (H1 2015). The report highlights that the Housing market is still under pressure; H1 2015 witnessed a 47% drop in new launches. Nearly two lakh homes remain unsold in Mumbai as sales continue its downhill ride. Launches plummet by nearly 70%, while demand dives 30% over the last 2 years. Confusion over Mumbai’s new Development Plan 2034 impacts approvals for new projects. As regards the Office space takeaways, the report reveals that Mumbai maintains its pace of 2014; records office space transaction of

Banks To Witness Bad-Loans Pressure In FY’16 By A Business Reporter

ndian banks will continue to reel under the impact of bad loans in the current financial year, although new NPAs may decline, says a Moody's report. "In our opinion, the Indian banks are unlikely to reduce their problem loan ratios in FY2016 but the new Non Performing Loans (NPL) will probably decline," Moody's Investors Service said, based on findings of a poll. State-owned banks have little capacity to improve their generally weak capital buffers through retained earnings as capital infusion, including from government, is likely to remain scarce, it said. Bulk of the respondents, according to a poll result, are not expecting any signifi-

cant improvement in the capital levels of the state-owned banks over the next two years. According to the poll, in inflationadjusted terms, property prices have appreciated, particularly rapidly, in Hong Kong, India, Malaysia and Singapore since 2008-09 global financial crisis that was triggered by the housing sector. Respondents were split when asked whether they expect meaningful reform of corporate governance of the PSU banks over the next three years. "There was 60:40 split between respondents expecting improvements in Indian banks' asset quality in the financial year ending March 2016 and those who saw a stable trend," the poll said.

2.5 mn sq ft in H1 2015; IT/ITeS find greener pastures across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune; State’s new IT/ITeS policy – unlikely to be the game changer; Improved east-west connectivity owing to the metro and the SCLR will drive office demand in H2 2015 across Ghatkopar, Andheri, Versova among others and Banks, Manufacturing & Media consulting continue being the anchor for MMR’s office market Office absorption is forecasted at 5.8 mn sq ft in H2 2015 - an increase of 20% compared to H2 2014. Adding on the office market findings, Viral Desai, National Director, Office Transactions, Knight Frank India, said, “Mumbai developers have begun showing interest towards commercial developments

which was not the case in the last 23 years. Two reasons for this, firstly office space has shown robust growth in demand on the back of improved economic sentiments and second, with the residential market slowing down, developers foresee the office market to be more lucrative. Although valuations within the office market are lower as compared to the residential space, the demand however, is a sustained one. Additionally, supply of Grade-A office spaces have reduced which may lead to a marginal increase in rents across select locations. This will also lead to a resultant increase in the demand of Built to suit office spaces. Going forward, I expect absorption to clock 5.8 mn sq ft – an increase of 20% compared to H2 2014.”

n “our pursuit of excellence in investigation, we should equip ourselves to not only crack cases but, to understand the nuances of cases whose implications are far reaching in the financial world. A course on Financial Intelligence, from a premier institution such as IIM Bangalore, will equip our officers with the latest knowledge and new techniques to do the work assigned to them with speed and accuracy. It will also help us enhance the CBI motto of ‘Industry, Impartiality and Integrity’ with another vital element – Knowledge,” said Anil Kumar Sinha, Director, Central Bureau of Investigation. He was speaking at IIM Bangalore, which has launched a unique offering – a Certificate Program in Financial Intelligence and Analytics – for the officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation. The program, delivered by senior faculty members mostly from the Finance and Accounting areas of IIMB, seeks to provide CBI officers with knowledge in wide ranging areas of financial management, and financial operations and markets. ASHINGTON: Describing him as one of the most "exuberant boosters" of India's nuclear capabilities, the US media today highlighted the contribution of 'missile man' A P J Abdul Kalam to the country's atomic and space programme. Kalam, who would have turned 84 in October died after suffering a massive cardiac arrest during a lecture at the IIM Shillong yesterday, plunging his country into overwhelming grief. "He was one of the most exuberant boosters of the country's nuclear program," The New York Times wrote in a rare obituary for Kalam. "He used the spotlight to urge India to build up its military strength and to free itself from the

threat of domination by outside forces," the daily said. The Times said that Kalam spent little time outside India. "For him, it was a point of pride that India had developed its bomb without much help from foreign powers. And he described himself as thoroughly Indian," it said. Kalam has been credited with helping develop his country's first space satellites. In the 1980s, he helped design the nuclear-capable 'Prithvi' and 'Agni' ballistic missiles, The Washington Post said. "He played a crucial role when India tested its nuclear weapons in 1998. The test resulted in sanctions against the country but helped elevate Mr Kalam to the status of folk hero in his country," the Post said in AP/PTI

Kalam a ‘great President’: Lord Swraj Paul

LONDON: Leading NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul has condoled the death of APJ Abdul Kalam, describing him as a "great President" and a world-renowned scientist who made immense contributions to India. Expressing his condolences, Paul, Chairman of Caparo Group, the UKbased diversified conglomerate, said Kalam was one of the most popular Presidents of India and a great personal friend. “APJ Abdul Kalam was a great President and a very distinguished world-renowned scientist who made an immense contribution to India. All of us Indians are very proud of the achievements for which he was responsible.'”

Return ‘Koh-i-Noor’ to India: UK MP L

ONDON: British Indian MP Keith Vaz today called for the world-famous 'Koh-i-Noor' diamond to be returned to India during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's UK visit in November. Vaz's comments came in response to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's recent stirring speech at the Oxford Union calling for Britain to pay reparations to India for 200 years of its brutal colonial rule. "I welcome Dr Tharoor's speech and the endorsement of its message by Prime Minister Modi. I share their views. These are genuine grievances which must be addressed. "Pursuing monetary reparations is complex, time consuming and potentially fruitless, but there is no excuse for not returning precious items such as the Koh-i-Noor diamond, a campaign I have backed for many years," said Vaz, the longest serving British MP of Asian descent.

Meryl Streep, Winslet oppose decriminalisation of prostitution L

OS ANGELES: Actresses Meryl Streep, Lena Dunham, Kate Winslet and Anne Hathaway have opposed a human rights group's proposal to decriminalise sex trade. The stars are opposing the "Draft Policy on Sex Work" of Amnesty International, which posits that all consensual sexual conduct between adults, which excludes acts that involve coercion, deception, threats, or violence, is entitled to protection from state interference, said The Hollywood Reporter. The report, scheduled to be presented next month at an Amnesty meeting in Dublin, argues that the ongoing criminalisation of the sex trade leads only to more "harassment and violence, including ill-treatment (of sex workers) at the hands of police." A letter addressed to the leaders of Amnesty, signed by 400 individuals and organisations, including Streep, Dunham, Winslet, Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Allison Williams, Emma Thompson, Lisa Kudrow, begs to differ. "The signatories below represent a wide breadth of national and international human rights advocates, women's rights organisations, faith-based and secular organisations and concerned individuals," the

Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet letter reads. "(We are) deeply troubled by Amnesty's proposal to adopt a policy that calls for the decriminalisation of pimps, brothel owners and buyers of sex, the pillars of a USD 99 billion global sex industry." According to the letter, any sanctioning by the state could lead to "a system of gender apartheid ... (in which women) whose lives are shaped by absence of choice are ... Set apart for consumption by men and for the profit of their pimps, traffickers and brothel owners."

Strong earthquake hits Indonesia’s Papua: USGS J

AYAPURA (INDONESIA): A powerful magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the eastern Indonesian province of Papua today, US seismologists said, causing panicked people to run out of their homes. No tsunami warning was issued after the quake, which struck inland, and Indonesia's national disaster agency said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The tremor hit at 6:41 am local time (0311 IST Tuesday), almost 250 kilometres (150 miles) west of the provincial capital Jayapura at a depth of 52 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said. "The quake was felt very strongly for four seconds" said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. "Residents panicked and rushed out of their homes." He said there were no initial re-

ports of damage but added the region around the epicentre, in Indonesia's remote east, was difficult to reach, and data was still being collected. The Earthquake-Report monitoring website said the area has "steep mountain ranges and its vegetation is rainforest, which means that the chance of dangerous landslides is real". An AFP reporter in Jayapura said weak shaking was felt in the city for a few seconds. Both Indonesian authorities and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of any tsunami waves from the quake, which occurred beneath a jungle. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

HENNAI: The spotlight will be on Test skipper Virat Kohli as India A go into the second and final unofficial Test against Australia A here tomorrow, looking to secure a win after drawing the first match last week. Looking to get some vital competitive match practice ahead of the tough Sri Lanka tour, Kohli straight away joined the practice sessions yesterday. His decision to play the match was to get acclimatized to the conditions which is similar to Colombo where he would be leading the Indian team for the first time in a threeTest series starting on August 12. In the first unofficial test that ended last week, the wicket condition at MA Chidambaram Stadium was tough and slow resulting in the teams drawing the match. In the last three days, the grounds men here have been working on the wicket and with Kohli being around in the playing eleven for the hosts, the match is likely to throw a strip that is to the liking of the players. In the first match, Indian spinners Pragyan Ojha and Amit Mishra were the biggest gainers with match hauls of six and five wickets respectively, while opening batsman Lokesh Rahul (96 in first innings) made the most of the slow wicket. Cheteshwar Pujara, Vijay Shankar and Shreyas Iyer also chipped in with useful contributions. However, skipper Pujara will have to make do without the services of Rahul, Mishra and pacer Umesh Yadav, who have been selected for India's Test squad which will take on Sri Lanka in the three-Test series. "I don't want to divulge the playing XI now but Rahul, Mishra and Umesh won't be available. I will open the innings and Jayant Yadav will come into the team," said skipper Pujara on the eve of the match. Without their services, the hosts would need to up their game a lot more if they hope to put it across the Australian outfit in the second match to seal the two-match series. The visitors, on the other hand,

No cricket series amid terror strikes: Ganguly backs BCCI

N

EW DELHI: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly today backed BCCI's stance of not resuming bilateral cricketing ties with Pakistan until the cross-border terrorism stops. PCB had requested its Indian counterpart to host a bi-lateral series in December this year as per an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two boards comprising five series in eight years till 2023. BCCI had promised to take up the matter with the government of India but the recent Gurdaspur terror attacks have prompted Board secretary Anurag Thakur to declare that cricket will take a backseat for a while and Ganguly could not agree more. "I think BCCI is correct in saying that terror will have to completely go before play could happen. Because as human beings we also want terror to completely go," Ganguly told mediapersons during an Apollo Munich Health Insurance event for a 'Dengue Care' plan here. "So this has always been the case with an India-Pakistan series. As much as we understand that it is entertaining and it is an high-profile series, we cannot take away the sufferings which the people go through at the border especially after

what happened in Gurdaspur yesterday,”he added. "This has been going on for while. When we went to Pakistan in 2004, I was fortunate enough to be the captain of the side and we won the Test and the ODI series, for the first time in Pakistan. That series happened after 15 years," the former captain fondly recollected. Ganguly, 43, is also hopeful that recently exonerated from the MCOCA charge by a Delhi court, former India medium-pacer Sreesanth will also get relief from BCCI, which has till now refused to revoke his life ban. "I think he has been cleared by the Delhi court and the BCCI has said

that the disciplinary action on him continues. And I believe he has been relieved by the Delhi court of criminal charges. I think the BCCI gives an opportunity to every player to come back and play and I think a dialogue would happen between BCCI and Sreesanth. "If the board feels that the clearance from the Delhi court is fine, I am sure it will make way for the him to come back and play cricket," Ganguly expressed hope. "The Kerala Cricket Association I believe has supported Sreesanth and requested the BCCI to help him and get back on the path. And that's how it should be. I think in a few months

time when the BCCI is convinced that everything is fine and clear, they will let him play, he added. Being part of the BCCI cricket advisory committee alongside Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, Ganguly is happy with the recent developments in Indian cricket and said that Ravi Shastri is doing a good job as Team Director. "At the present moment, he (Shastri) has been asked to continue as Team Director by the board till at least the Sri Lanka tour. "Even Anurag Thakur has said in an interview that after the Lanka tour, we will sit and find out if we need a coach. Because we have enough people (support staff) in the team. Ravi is the director of the team and I don't see any difference between a Director and a coach," Ganguly's answer was indicative of what his take was regarding this issue. "So that's the way board has thought about it. With Sanjay (Bangar) and Bharat Arun and the fielding coach, we don't need any more than this at the present moment. I think they were very wise in giving Ravi a full go after he joined the team in England last year, so it's been just one year and why not give him a full go," he added.

29 England aim to overcome Mitch hitch in third Test

Australia’s Brad Haddin and Peter Nevill walk for nets practice in preparation for the third Ashes Test cricket match.

B

irmingham: Joe Root is confident England's latest collapse against an Australia pace attack led by Mitchell Johnson won't still haunt them come the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston starting tomorrow. Left-arm fast bowler Johnson took 37 wickets at 14 apiece as Australia thrashed England 5-0 on home soil to regain the Ashes in 2013/14. Johnson, however, was mocked by England fans while going wicketless during the first innings of Australia's 169-run defeat in Cardiff in the opening match of the current Ashes campaign.

THE ASHES It was though a very different story in the second Test at Lord's, where Johnson had match figures of six for 80 during Australia's crushing 405-run win that levelled the five-match series at 1-1. England captain Alastair Cook may be in better form than Australia counterpart Michael Clarke but that counted for little as the hosts, with Johnson taking three cheap wickets, slumped to a humiliating 103 all out in their second innings. But a defiant Root said of Johnson: "It's wrong to single one man out. You look at Cardiff and he only got two expensive wickets so it's about putting him under pressure." England have responded to their drubbing at Lord's by dropping Gary Ballance and promoting the experienced Ian Bell -himself struggling for runs -- to Ballance's positon of number three, with Jonny Bairstow coming into the side at the expense of his Yorkshire colleague.

Coaching should be left to the coaches: Charlesworth

N

EW DELHI: Ric Charlesworth, one of the greatest hockey minds, feels all is not lost for the Indian team ahead of next year's Rio Olympics but called on the administrators of the game in the country to stop sacking coaches needlessly. Charlesworth's comments come after another foreign coach, Paul van Ass, was sacked unceremoniously five months into his three-year contract following a spat between Hockey India chief Narinder Batra and the Dutch-

man during the World League Semifinals in Belgium. "You are lucky I suppose that Roelant Oltmans (now the chief coach) is still there. He has been known to the players and has been around for a while (as High Performance Manager) but yes too much chopping and changing can't be good for the team," Charlesworth told PTI today. The Western Australian, who is both a World Cup winning player and coach, knows what it is like to coach in India, having coached in the Hockey

India League, besides spending tough 10 months in 2008 as technical director of the national team. "In the end, you should leave the coaching up to the coaches. You put them incharge and you let them do it. There have been good things happening in Indian hockey of late but then you hear of something like this (Van Ass ouster) happening," said Charlesworth, who resigned after coaching the Kookaburras to success at the 2014 Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands.

Rahul Sachdev sizzles with century break of 102

M

UMBAI: Producing another sterling performance Rahul Sachdev of PJHG ‘Golmaal’ uncorked a magnificent century break of 102, which was the highlight of his team’s 3-0 (home) and 3-1 (away) wins against Radio ‘The A Team’ in Section-G during the 4th week of the PJHG Global Ocean Group-Mumbai Snooker League (MSL) – 2015. The League is being conducted by the BSAM (Billiards and Snooker Association of Maharashtra). This was the first threefigure break this year. The left-handed cueist Sachdev, who had earlier compiled a break of 53 in the 1st week and playing to a handicap of +15, showed excellent touch and neatly

stitched together that effort in the first frame to tame Mithul Parikh (+55) 117-59 to give Golmaal a winning start in the home match. Later Golamaal’s seasoned cueist Siddharth Parikh (+5) made a break of 44 as he won the second frame against Anees Jumani (+35) before the double pair of Rovin D’Souza and Dhruv Sitvala won the next frame to seal the win. In the away match, too, Sachdev won his frame as Goalmaal went on to complete a 3-1 win. Meanwhile, the Wodehouse Gymkhana team ‘The Woody Woodpeckers’ struck a good balance and combined well as a team to finish in pole position in the four-team Section-J and qualified for the knockout phase. IAAF gives guarded response; says will consult IOC, experts N

EW DELHI: In a guarded response to the Court of Arbitration decision to suspend the IAAF Hyperandrogenism Regulations for two years in a case involving Dutee Chand, the world athletics body said that it will consult experts and IOC on the future course of action. In an interim award, a three-member panel of the CAS yesterday partially upheld Chand's appeal challenging the validity of the IAAF's Hyperandrogenism Regulations and allowed her to resume her career. The world's top sports tribunal, however, did not close the case and said that it will hold further hearings if the IAAF furnishes more evidence "concerning the magnitude of the performance advantage that hyperandrogenic females enjoy over other females as a result of their abnormality of high androgen levels". The IAAF's hyperandrogenism policy bars female athletes whose bodies produce natural levels of testosterone above permissible range. The 19-year-old Dutee was disqualified last year by the AFI as per IAAF's hyperandrogenism policy

after tests revealed that she has this condition of hyperandrogenism. "IAAF has received the CAS's interim award in the Dutee Chand case, where the validity of IAAF's Hyperandrogenism Regulations has been challenged," the world body said in a statement. "The IAAF will now meet as soon as possible with its experts and with the IOC and its experts to discuss how best to address this interim ruling by the CAS. The IAAF will make no further comments on this subject until those discussions are concluded," it added. The IAAF said that the Hyperandrogenism Regulations were adopted

following a lengthy and comprehensive consultation exercise by its Expert Working Group in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee, involving world-leading experts across various fields, along with numerous other stakeholders. The Lausanne-based CAS, however, was not convinced that the evidence produced before the tribunal was sufficient to conclude that "hyperandrogenic female athletes may enjoy such a significant performance advantage that it is necessary to exclude them from competing in the female category". It refused to uphold the validity of these regulations. "The IAAF has not provided sufficient scientific evidence about the quantitative relationship between enhanced testosterone levels and improved athletics performance in hyperandrogenic athletes. In the absence of such evidence, the Panel is unable to conclude that hyperandrogenic female athletes may enjoy such a significant performance advantage" said the CAS.
