he 19 Lok Sabha constituencies of Marathwada and Western Maharashtra posted a record breaking 61.71 per cent voting in the crucial second phase of polling yesterday, bettering the 2009 percentage of 54.14 per cent, by around 7 per cent. Barring complaints of EVM malfunctioning and missing names in voter list in Pune city, polling was by and large peaceful. Prominent amongst those whose fate was sealed in the EVMs yesterday were – Ashok Chavan (Nanded), Supriya Sulye (Baramati),

Gopinath Munde (Beed) and Sushilkumar Shinde (Solapur SC) among others. Barring Beed Lok Sabha constituency where the voting percentage dipped by a percentage point from 65.6 per cent in 2009 to 64.00 per cent this time around, the polling percentage in rest of the 18 constituencies bettered previous records.

In Pune, though former Congress MP and political outcast, Suresh Kalmadi vented his hurt when asked to comment upon Ashok Chavan. He remarked: “Ashok Chavan is lucky, I am not”. In Pune city scores of voters complained about

their names missing from the voters' list. Prominent among those who could not cast their votes included Bollywood director Amol Palekar. An Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) was replaced at Shamrao Kalmadi school after voters complained that all the votes cast were going to one particular party.

The largest constituency in terms of voters is Maval (19.46 lakh) and the constituency with least number of voters was RatnagiriSindhudurg (13.63 lakh). Overall there were 32.42 lakh voters, which included 1.69 crore male, 1.53 crore female and 306 Other category voters.

he entire nation is enthusiastic to take part in the electoral process and the mood among the fishing community in the coastal villages of Uttan near Bhayandar is no different.

Eager to cast their vote, thousands of fishermen have rescheduled their fishing plans. It is peak catch season, but with the elections coming up on April 24, the fishing community seems to have recognised the importance of their individual responsibility for a better future.

While most of them have planned to embark on their fishing venture only after casting their votes early that Thursday morning, others who have already left this week have taken extra care so as to ensure their return before the scheduled polling day.

Apart from an elaborate campaign launched by the Election Commission officials, religious institutions (churches, temples, mosques) and social organisations have been motivating locals in their areas to ensure maximum participation of voters in the electoral process.

“We have appealed fishermen to exercise their franchise and most of them have shown their keen interest in getting inked before or after going on board their fishing mission, which is a good sign for democracy,” said the fishing community leader Bernard D’mello.

It should be noted that the electoral strength of the coastal villages in and around Uttan which falls under the Thane parliamentary segment (no. 25) stands at 18,000, most of whom are members of the fishing community.

Varsity lacks research centres which are compulsory for students of PhD, forcing them to seek admission in other universities

W

hile the Mumbai University (MU) has taken the initiative for Masters of Doctorate (PHD)'s entrance test called as PhD Entrance Test (PET), it has failed to come up with the mandatory facilities required for the course. This has forced the PhD students to seek admissions and appear for PET exams in other universities to get a PhD. In the year 2010, the MU introduced the PhD Entrance Test for students who want to pursue PhD. A student has to compulsorily clear the PET exam or National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Eligibility Test (SET) to pursue the PhD degree.

As per the rules and regulations of the University Grants Commissions (UGC), an university has to set up PhD course work centres for the students. It is compulsory for

the students to attend this course work. The course which has a tenure of six months, generally conducts the process for research methodology for the students. The attendance of the course work is considered for granting credits to the students while granting them the PhD degree.

A PhD guide, who did not wish to be named said, “Our students do not have re-

search centres where we can conduct the PhD course work. We have no option but to personally conduct or skip the research course work and directly carry on the thesis process! The MU should establish research course work centres soon so that students do not miss the basis of the PhD degree! This is the reason why most of the students have been rushing to other varsities to do their Phds.”

Last year, the ADC had reported about a 'ghost list' of PhD guides, released by the MU for its students. This list carried the names of guides who had been dead as well as those who had retired from service.

Dr Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU told the ADC: “We have already set up a review committee for setting up PhD course work centres. As soon as reports are received the varsity will take necessary action.”

“G

We will ensure that he will be incapable of repeating his act in future,” said the father of one of the one-eyed pedophiles victims, who was waiting outside the D.N. Nagar police station on Thursday to give his statement. His daughter was kidnapped from his Nirmal Nagar residence in Bandra on July 2013 and was molested by Ayaz Mohmmad Ali Ansari alias Firoze Kaniya.

After inspiring terror in the hearts of parents for nine months, the notorious one-eyed serial child molester, 35-year old Ansari was finally nabbed by the D.N. Nagar police on Wednesday, from the Golibar area in Khar (East). With his arrest the parents of several victims made a beeline outside the police station posing a serious threat to Ansari’s life. There was anger in their eyes as they waited outside the station to see their daughter’s tormentor.

According to this victims's father his ten-yearold daughter was playing outside their home in Nirmal Nagar when Ansari lured her through his usual modus operandi. Ansari told the girl that he knows her father very well and asked her to follow him on the pretext of giving his cell phone number to the victim’s father.

Mohmmad Ali Ansari With anguish in his tone the victim’s father added, “He was a nuisance in Nirmal Nagar. Residents have had several meetings in the past when he had molested other victims. As the cops called us to the police station on Wednesday to record our statements, the news of his arrest spread in our area. All the locals who were terrified by his activities in the past had come together and each one of us wanted to kill him.”

Most of the victims' parents and some locals from Nirmal Nagar and D.N. Nagar, where the accused has committed most of his crimes, had come together and had planned an attack on Ansari on his way to the court. “Somehow the cops came to know about our plans and only because of their intervention we remained calm,” said one of the parents who refused to divulge the details of his case.

A mother of a D.N. Nagarbased victim said, “He

should be killed right away.

There is no point in dragging the case. If he is released more innocent girls will suffer. He is a drug addict, he can go to any extent to fulfill his fantasies.”

Ansari had met this victim while she was playing on the mezzanine floor of her house. He identified himself as Irfan and asked the girl to follow him claiming that he wanted her to give her father a cell phone number. The victim followed Ansari and returned with a horrifying tale of being undressed and molested at a knife-point.

Gauging the anguish of the agitated parents, the D.N. Nagar police deployed more than 15 policemen to escort Ansari while he was taken to the Sessions Court today. The cops also planted two decoys in burqas along with the accused to confuse the crowd gathered outside the Sessions Court. Two policemen with sten guns and the rest with other weapons were guarding the accused.

No one was allowed to get too close to the accused throughout his journey to the Session Court.

Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Chavan of D.N. Nagar police station said, “The accused has been charged under sections 376, 363, 506 and other sections of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012. He was produced before the Sessions Court and has been remanded to police custody till April 25.”

n Thursday, burglars struck at a jewellery shop and managed to loot Rs.7.81 lakh worth jewellery and cash. The incident took place in Pant Nagar where the thieves entered the shop by drilling a hole into the rear wall of the shop.

Unfortunately, there were no CCTV cameras installed inside the shop and the cops suspect an insider's involvement in the crime.

The shop, B M Jewellers is located at Aryan Nadkar Road in Ghatkopar (east) and it was only when the owner of the shop opened the shutters around 11 am on Thursday that he learnt his shop had been burgled.

Senior inspector Suresh Nirmal of Pant Nagar police station said: "The shop is located in a single storied building which houses shops on the ground floor and a municipal school on the first floor. Burglars made a hole through the rear RCC wall of the shop and made away with the loot."

Over 68,000 poll officials deployed for six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai

ore than 68,000 officials will be on duty in the six parliamentary constituencies of Mumbai in 9,879 polling centres on April 24, when voting for third and final phase of Lok Sabha elections will be held in Maharashtra.

Two persons where killed after a roofing slab collapsed on them in a ground plus one structure in Govandi area of Mumbai at around 7 pm on Thursday. A shop was being run in the structure, and the space was rented out.According to police and fire brigade officials, the deceased were present on the mezzanine floor of the structure and fell to their death on the ground floor. Topping the list are women like Jayalalithaa, Mamata Banerjee, Sheila Dixit, Mayavati, not to mention the super star Sonia Gandhi. To me it was quite a revelation to learn that over the past two decades much has changed at the workplace – both in India as well as globally.

Apart from the fact that Godse had nothing to do with the RSS or the BJP, the names of leaders like Sardar Vallabbhai Patel are also dragged in to give meaning and relevance to fake conflicts. But our nonBJP leaders apparently think that all is well in love and war. Just think of what happened to Imran Masood for his hate speech against Modi.

As 'The Express' put it “even by the low standards of speech by Indian politicians, what Masood said was the pits”. It certainly had the potential to spark violence. Perhaps it is too late to advice that, in the words of the 'Express' “political parties should sit together and draw up a list of do's and don'ts that should govern their conduct before, during and after the elections”. But, when all is said and done, are our “elder' MPs so lacking in character that they need to be told how to behave? The sad but evident answer is yes, they do lack in character, witness the recent happenings in the Lok Sabha. What it all shows is that some of the political parties have no leaders of merit, who would dare to pull up their candidates and given them a talking down which they so deeply merit, which only shows that they know they are at the losing end. Anticipation of failure can be so intensely self-defeating.

Time has a great influence upon things and beings as may be seen by the change from infancy to youth, and from middle age to old age. In Sanskrit, therefore, time is called Kala which means destruction, as no change is possible without destruction; in other words destruction may be described as change. All things natural and artificial that we see today differ vastly in their form from what they were several thousand years ago, and not only can this be noticed in such things as fruit, flowers, birds, and animals, but also in the human

race; for from time to time the structure of man has undergone various changes.

The form of man is divided into two parts, each part having its special attributes. The head is the spiritual body, and the lower part the material body. Therefore, in comparison with the body, the head has far greater im-

elebrate the culinary treasures and delights of Thailand in Mumbai as Radhika Khanna from Lotus Blossom is introducing a Thai pop-up restaurant at Tranceforme Under The Banyan in Lower Parel. Lotus Blossom has been catering delicious Thai food to the homes of foodies and Thai diplomats in Mumbai and chef Somboon Sirithangkul from Bangkok, who was also a chef at Blue Elephant Restaurant at Hotel Intercontinental, is in town to cater to the Thai consulate for an upcoming event in Mumbai.

He will now be associated with Lotus Blossom for three days at the Thai pop-up.

Radhika Khanna tells us, “After serving the people of Mumbai through Lotus Blossom, we are associating with chef Somboon for a pop-up restaurant that will literally bring Bangkok to Mumbai on a platter. The menu is innovative and interesting. The décor and food will be made to give you a Thai experience.” The set menu for the Pop Up comprises of appetisers, soups, salads, entree, curry & rice and desserts. There will be an interesting mix including Miang Kham, a deconstructed Thai paan filled with sweet, sour, salty and crunchy flavors and textures; Tom Kha Thalay, a creamy coconut milk soup flavoured with lemongrass and galangal. In addition to these it also has Kai Hor Bai Toey, chicken parcels served with dipping sauce; a crispy fish and raw mango salad; Rose petal salad, a sensuous thai salad; grilled chicken and pineapple curry and Mee Krob. To top it off, Grover Vineyards will be providing wines. Each and every course will be paired with a different wine depending on the flavours.

If you also want to know how to put these dishes together, chef Somboon will holding Thai food demos on the morning of April 18 and 19. He will personally demonstrate how to create authentic Thai dishes comprising of a soup, salad and curry, that can be made at home. This will be an interactive cookout and each person will get to taste the food, drink the wine and get a recipe especially prepared by Chef Somboon.

Theatre South Mumbai has a good reason to laugh this weekend as The Comedy Kitchen is visiting NCPA with a selection of nine short comic pieces performed by five actors. They are on a mission to make people laugh and have earlier received standing ovations for their performances of the play.

Theatrician Tathagata Chowdhary, owner and founder of Comedy Kitchen tells us, “The pieces range from silently hilarious to outright absurd.

The spring/summer collection uses digital prints and designs based on illusion, as well as psychedelic images. This gives the dresses a mystic, yet sexy charm. ccording to me, a good store must have prime location and good visibility.

While Design Studio Collectibles does check the first box, it is anything but visible.

Located in an obscure corner of a building on Bhulabhai Desai Road (more easily identifiable as the building behind the Audi showroom, next to the Cadbury office), Design Studio Collectibles is not a place that will naturally catch your eye, unless you are looking for it.

But, here’s why you should be looking for it.

Walk into the store and you are greeted by statues, big and small, some striking wooden furniture and a vast range of small (and a few big) statues by Guillermo Forchino. They tell a story, involving one or two characters at the most while uniquely describing professions or memorable moments. The attention to detail in these figurines is phenomenal. Right from the glossiness of a mobile screen and the stubble on a frustrated golfer, to cracks in a wind shield and arrogance on a lawyer's face, the range of emotions is unbelievable.

They also have wooden game tables. I particularly loved the one with five games built into one, including chess and backgammon among others. When it’s shut, it

doubles up as a coffee table and is an interesting piece if you'd like to add a vintage touch to your home. They also had classy coffee tables made from refurbished trunks that tell a story. Another intriguing section, adjoining this one, was the impressive range of balance toys. With the entire toy hinging on

one metal point, balanced on a frame, these toys are a work of art. Concepts of physics come into play as you swing the toy to produce motions, such as a golfer hitting a shot or a boy rowing a boat while the entire contraption is balanced on a single point.

Under license from the artists, there are also house recreations of sculptures made by

artists such as Auguste Rodin, Edgar Dega, Salvador Dali and Michaelangelo, although these pale in comparison to the figurines by Guillermo Forchino. They also have toys for children with kits such as how to build your own kaleidoscope or a ship in a bottle, developed by child psychologists from Europe. These are aimed to entertain as well as teach children cognitive skills. They also have a small section where you can customise awards for personal or corporate gifting.

What's great about the store is that each item comes with a tag to tell you a little about the piece. The store is aimed at representing and cementing memories and bonds and makes for an interesting gifting option if you have a deep wallet. While a small figurine will cost you above `700, the Forchino figurines will set you back around `30,000. That said, if you want to gift your parents something for their 25th wedding anniversary, or a momentous birthday, they have some great options as long as you have the budget.

Newly opened MGM Marbles & Stone is a swanky addition to an existing trove of luxury stores in Lower Parel. Radhika R. walks into the store to find out what sets it apart from the rest

he MGM store stands out in an area packed with furniture and fixture stores. This hard-to-miss store is surrounded by luxury furniture showrooms, but still manages to hold its own and so, it’s difficult to look at it and not want to step in.

Launched recently in India, MGM Marbles & Stones is an Italian marble giant with a state-of-the-art showroom. Spread across 1,200 square feet, this showroom is a visual treat with calming designs and illuminating pieces. Designs at the store cater to elite homes and luxury office spaces. They can also be installed in hospitality facilities that want their space to be unique. To warm up to Indian preferences, this Italian marble processing unit has introduced a brand new line, Collezioni. Icing on Top has introduced a new savoury menu, that features bite-sized cookies and flavoured flatbreads. Dev Goswami tells you whether you should be ordering them

he first thought that came to my mind when I saw Icing on Top's foray into savoury food was — 'cute.' The cookies and crisps are packaged in cute glass bottles and their bite-sized nature adds to the cute quotient. These would look great on a kitchen shelf and we were quite excited about trying them out.

We tried four items from their new menu — the Multigrain Crackers, Oregano and Black Pepper Flatbread, Sundried Tomato cookies and the Basil and Parmesan cookies. They tell us that the crackers taste best with a dip and the first bite made us realise that you really do need the dips. The multi-grain was a bit tough on the palate and overall, quite bland. The Oregano and Black Pepper Flatbread, which is supposed to be full of flavour, suffered from the same problem. I just felt that there was something missing, even though I couldn't point to a particular ingredient.

The cookies, on the other hand, were a different and a much better experience. I liked the Sun-dried Tomato cookies the best — they had a very subtle tartness to them and make for a good snack. The Basil and Parmesan cookies too were subtly flavoured — some might say too subtle — but I thought it was just perfect.

Both the cookies can work great as snacks or accompaniments to drinks. The flatbread and crackers on the other hand, could have been better — though I do feel that they would work well with a dip (something that we didn't do).

So, should you be ordering from Icing on Top? I would say the new menu is worth trying at least once. The cookies start at `800 per kg while the flatbreads start at `1,200.

emember the days when you bunked college in favour of a hunt across the city for the cheapest watering hole?

Well, you’ll be glad to learn that the hunt is finally over, with the opening of new café and restaurant, #TAG. As the name suggests, the cafe is all set to make some noise on Twitter and bring together likeminded people who have common interests and are seeking to network. This newly opened cafe and bar stands loud and clear amongst the other famous restaurants that surround it, such as Goa Portuguesa and Some Like It Hot. Not the one to shy away, #TAG welcomes its guests warmly.

As you step in, you are greeted by a Bob Marley face, looking like he is about to break into his song, Stir it up, literally asking you to stir up your evening. With brown interiors and comfortable seating, #TAG makes for a cosy space to sit and enjoy a few drinks. But, the badly placed light fixtures mean that you’ll be eating with a shadow hanging over your food. As we took a seat and stared at the shiny cutlery, we were handed the innovatively designed menu. It comes with a wooden plank that has interesting logos of social networking sites carved on it.

We proceeded to order cocktails and were pleasantly surprised by what we got.

The Red Sea (`279) is a perfect summer drink, as it mixes vodka with the fruity flavour of watermelon and passion fruit.

English bistro 5 - The Restaraunt has come up with a refreshing menu for batteling heat waves this summer. With its social media inspired moniker, is the newly opened #TAG as hip as the name suggests? Radhika R. spends an evening there and discovers an excellent spot for lazy summer afternoons mixed with herbs and french beans forced us to move on to main course. Our pick from the main course was the astonishingly tasty Singapore Firecracker (`178). The dish had small dices of chicken topped with a tangy, spicy sauce that had fresh Asian herbs and lemongrass and was served with steamed rice and a fresh crunchy salad. It was quite welcoming to our hungry bellies.

We then checked out their dessert menu, which wasn’t too exciting and so, we decided to go with the classics — Honey Noodles with Ice Cream (`89) and a Sizzling Brownie (`89). Not very impressed with the desserts, we decided to end the night with a bang and ordered a few shots.

Finally, we were impressed! The tequila based Tequila Day (`299), vodka based Blue Kamakazi (`299) and the extremely potent Brain Damage (`299) ensured that Bob Marley kept his promises and left us all stirred up.

We’re not raving about it, but it’s a good place to grab a drink with some friends. #TAG may lack finesse, but it will definitely please cocktail lovers and a young crowd looking for an affordable place to hang out.

Delight (`279), a cocktail true to its name, will delight you with a mixture of white rum, coconut syrup, fresh cream and kiwi crush. The Chicumbra Martini (`279) and Berry Blast (`279) were beautifully blended with amazing flavours.

The funnily named starters are sure to

catch your attention but some will please you while some will disappoint. Galloping Horses (`119) is a version of a traditional chicken appetiser served on fried bread croutons and was a good accompaniment for our drinks, but the Malay Fishcakes (`149) are best avoided. This flaked fish

here was unanimous cheer when Gulzar was selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Lifetime Achievement, which is announced along with the government’s National Awards for cinema. The poet, screenwriter, lyricist and filmmaker is a real treasure and richly merited the award; in fact considering his immense contribution to cinema, the honour came a bit late, which is better than never.

The National Awards were announced a few days later, and the general opinion is that they are fair this year, with the jury recognising popular choices but not mainstream Bollywood, which, does lobby rather hard for the only awards that are considered genuine. There is always a bit of subjectivity involved when people from disparate backgrounds with different tastes in cinema are thrown together to pick winners from a very large number of entries (310) pouring in from all over the country. Kangana’s dashing cowboy act After the super success of ‘Queen’ and ‘Krrish-3’ Kangana Ranaut’s next release ‘Revolver Rani’ is creating a lot of buzz in the trade and among her fans. Sandeep Hattangadi caught up with Kangana to get more buzz on her film.

What is the story of the film?

'Revolver Rani', stars Vir Das and me in the lead. An unusual pair, I will be seen as a quirky, cool, politically active local goon who walks and talks with guns easier than words, while Vir plays a toyboy who tries to woo Rani (Kangana) for his ulterior motives. But what’s got people talking is the unusual and fresh pairing of Vir Das and me in the movie. While Vir has been doing small roles or multi-starrers in the past, he will be seen as the main lead and romancing a lead actress for the first time on screen. Humorist and fashionista sizzle on the big screen with amazing chemistry.

Where is the film set?

Set against the backdrop of politics in Chambal and Gwalior, 'Revolver Rani' is an unusual love story between Alka Gujjar (me) and her toyboy lover Rohan Mehra (Vir Das). Popularly known as 'Revolver Rani', Kangana plays a politically active local who talks with guns easier than words.

How is your character different?

Hindi filmmakers send the largest number of entries, even though it takes some nerve to send a film like Ghanchakkar. Bollywood biggies like Chennai Express, Dhoom 3, Krrish 3, Goliyon Ke Rasleela Ram Leela, Satyagraha, Raanjhana, Kai Po Che,Lootera and Anybody Can Dance had also sent in entries, but the jury was not impressed.

In one scene, I am arrested and on my way to jail I request for some time to attend to an urgent matter and drag Vir Das to a room and kiss him so wildly that his lips start bleeding!

Restored Satyajit Ray classic ‘Mahanagar’ to be re-released

EW DELHI: Satyajit Ray's 1963 classic 'Mahanagar', a sensitive portrayal of a housewife who challenges her traditionalist family by getting a job, has been digitally restored and is set to re-release after 50 years.

The film, starring Madhabi Mukherjee in the lead, charts the emerging class of women who became bread earners to support life in a big city despite facing resistance from the traditional structure.

The Kolkata-set movie is being rereleased in eight cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai on April 18 through PVR's Director's Rare.

'Mahanagar' has been restored

father R.D. Bansal was Ray's longtime producer.

Ray won the Silver Bear at the 14th Berlin International Film Festival for 'Mahanagar' in 1964.

The film also marked the debut of Jaya Bahaduri (Bachchan).

Varsha, R.D. Bansal's granddaughter, said they have restored all the six Ray films that were produced by them. "We first thought about restoring the films in 2011.

There was a Ray festival in Locarno at that time and there was a huge audience but the prints were not in a good condition, there were scratches and the colour had changed. The negatives kept on the analogue print were in a bad shape," Varsha told PTI.

What is the storyline of the film?

It’s a very different detective story and in Hindi films never has such a detective story been made, entertaining and interesting and it’s a proper journey of a detective. And as the films tagline goes, there is very good suspense in the film and the audience will be wondering what exactly is happening in the film. And why? And what is the chemistry like?

Describe the character of Samrat.

He is a very normal person but with an uncanny gift of solving criminal cases and his cases are everything in his life. Otherwise he is a detached person and doesn’t fall into love easily nor does he make enemies easily but he is very intelligent in solving cases but

was totally ignored, maybe because it was too popular or because it wasn’t high-minded enough. A couple of other internationally acclaimed films like Monsoon Shootout and Peddlers also came up empty. Because regional language films do not get adequate exposure in other parts of the country, except at film festivals, they are not able to gather enough traction in terms of building popular opinion in their favour. There is also the tendency to please all regional lobbies and whichever state has more representation in a particular year, manages to swing the vote.

There is no perfect audience, no perfect jury and no perfect awards that can please everybody.

In the feature film department, Hindi films from Mumbai seem to have bagged quite a few—Ship of Theseus, Shahid, Miss Lovely, Jolly LLB, Kaphal, Madras Café, Jal and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag—which is a good haul. Add to that a good number of Marathi films – Yellow, Astu, Tuhya Dharma Koncha, Fandry, Aajcha Diwas Majha—and an English film, The Coffin Maker, and the state’s film industry has done very well for itself.

She is a nice girl, genuinely, and though I had done more films than her she was at ease facing the camera and especially since we had a two-month workshop done before the principal shooting of the film. We were very comfortable since we knew each other before.

She has done a fabulous job in the film.

The Rajshris are not known for producing films of this genre.

Yes. They generally make serious films or love stories but when producer Kavita Barjatya came to me with this film I realised the passion with which they want to make this film and even Raj Babu was excited and so I immediately said yes.

You started as TV star with shows like ‘Kahin To Hoga’, among others? How has the journey been so far?

What are your next films?

I have ‘Fever’ coming up and I am reading a few scripts.

I got many offers but rejected them because I was not happy with the content. But this is a very catchy item number with 'desi tadka'. It's a typical song in UP and Bihar style. There is some naughtiness in it," Claudia told PTI. 'Desi Kattey' is expected to hit theatres on August 28.

ANGALORE: Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh today said it was difficult to cope with the World Twenty20 final defeat against Sri Lanka but he was learning to take disappointments in his stride.

India had reached the summit clash of the tournament unbeaten but failed cap the brilliant campaign with a win.

"A match like the finals always left feelings of 'so near yet so far', but as sportsmen they need to overcome these emotions quickly and face next challenge," he said in an interview to the Royal Challenger Bangalore's official website.

KARACHI: In a bid to pull Pakistan out of their recent slump, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has appointed Olympian Shahnaz Shaikh as the senior teams' coach.

Pakistan failed to qualify for the World Cup to be held in the Netherlands in June -- a humiliating first for the four-time former champions. Pakistan have also won three Olympic gold medals but fell to seventh position in the 2012 London Olympics. They were 12th and last in the 2010 World Cup in India. Shaikh, who has had two unsuccessful stints as coach, said his first target would be to defend the Asian Games title which Pakistan won in China in 2010.

Boxing ad-hoc committee fixes trial dates for CWG

NEW DELHI:The ad-hoc committee set up by the IOA to run some affairs of Indian boxing today decided to hold selection trials for the Commonwealth Games next month after a meeting here. The six-member committee, headed by veteran administrator Tarlochan Singh, met for the first time today and discussed critical issues facing Indian boxers, who are competing under the International Boxing Association's flag right now. "We have decided to select the Commonwealth Games core group of boxers in both the men's and women's category. For that, boxers will be told to assemble in Patiala between May 7 and 11," committee's convener Rakesh Gupta told PTI.

BU DHABI: One of the worst hit teams in last year's spotfixing scandal, Rajasthan Royals will be keen to clear their off-field image with good on-field performances when they begin their IPL campaign by taking on a formidable Sunrisers Hyderabad here tomorrow.

The Royals were left feeling betrayed when errant Indian pacer S Sreesanth and two other teammates -- Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan -- were arrested for allegedly indulging in spot-fixing in at least three IPL matches last season. But they hardly let that hamper their performance on the field. Ironically, RR ended up being the third best team in the last year's cash-rich event. Led by veteran Rahul Dravid, they dom-

inated the sixth edition, despite lack of big names in their ranks.

CCI appoints Chandran as Lead Doping Control Officer in IPL

DUBAI: Sports medicine expert Dr P S M Chandran was today appointed Lead Doping Control Officer for the seventh edition of Indian Premier League, the first leg of which has started in the UAE. Chandran has been appointed for the job by the BCCI and the IDTM (International Doping Tests and Management, Sweden)."He will be conducting dope tests on cricketers at the matches being played in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. This is the first time IDTM will be using the services of an Indian doctor as doping control officer for conducting dope tests outside India," a press release said.
