umbai finally receives some good news as the civic body has announced that the catchment areas have been receiving a good rainfall for the last three days with the Tulsi lake, which supplies 18 million litres of water to the city daily, overflowing yesterday. “Overflowing of the Tulsi lake is a good sign as it will ease the water scarcity problem in the city,” a civic official said. The Tulsi lake provides potable water to the city and is the first lake to overflow this year. It had begun overflowing on July 12 last year. The BMC now hopes that the major lakes like Bhatasa, Upper Vaitarna and Modaksagar too will begin to overflow soon. The Bhatasa lake makes for 60 per cent of city's water supply. The current water level at Modak Sagar is 158 m, Tansa – 122.17 m, Vihar lake – 76.54 m, Upper Vaitarna – 597.02 m and Bhatsa – 115.60 m. Water content in all the six lakes together is 3,73,244 million liters and the city needs 3,000 million litres daily. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

Former city mayor Shubha Raul puts forth her proposals in the BMC to curb acid attacks

By Shwetha Kannan

A

cid Survivors Foundation India (ASFI), in a first of its kind report, has profiled people who use acid as a means to attack others and also have come out with details like the reasons for indulging in such attacks and information about those sections of the society that are most vulnerable to such attacks. According to the all-India ASFI report, from 2010 to 2013, out of the victims who have been subjected to acid attacks, 68 per cent are adult women, followed by girls at 17 per cent, 13 per cent adult males and two per cent boys. Also, the AFSI says that between 2010 and 2013, rejection or refusal for love, marriage or sex is the top reason for men attacking women with acid (41 per cent). Then there are reasons like land, property money disputes (17 per cent), family related disputes (10 per cent), marital disputes (eight per cent), dowry (one per cent) and unknown reasons

amount to 23 per cent. “This tells us that ours is a frustrated and a desperate society where revenge, jealousy and need for domination of men over women is so high that the men can stoop down to any level to get what they want,” said Rahul Varma, National Director and CEO, ASFI. “Acid attacks have been taking place for years but such incidents were never recorded or reported. That is the reason why there are no proper records of such cases in the past. It is in recent times that such incidents are being talked about. Victims are coming out in the open and the media is reporting them. But through some research and investigations we have found that that in the past 10 years, at least 500 to 1,000 cases of acid attacks have taken place,” said Dr H.P Kanoria, Chairman, ASFI. Another interesting finding is the age pattern of the victims of acid attacks. In the age group of 0 to 5, only boys are acid attack victims while as the age increases more girls become

victims of acid attacks, age bracket 46 to 55 being an exception where again only boys are victims. In the 55 and above age group, only women are victims. Maximum women victims are in the age group of 19 to 25. There are no attacks on boys and girls in the age bracket of 6 to 12. Founded in 2010, the ASFI, headquartered in Kolkata with a functional chapter in Delhi, officially launched its Mumbai chapter on Monday. Till date it has identified more than 500 acid attack victims across the country and has reached out to over 35 victims in West Bengal and provided them with treatment, helped them get compensation from the government and took care of their rehabilitation. On Monday, the ASFI announced a campaign called 'War against the terror caused due to acid attack' where not only victims of such attacks would be provided with help and support but also initiatives to help curb such incidents will be taken up.

I think all the rules, restrictions and checks that are adhered to when one applies for a gun should be applicable while purchasing acid too. Some of these have suggestions have already come out as directives from the Supreme Court but their implementation is yet to happen in a satisfactory manner. I am trying to push it ahead at the city level from my end,” said Raul.

However, it has been found that many colleges have been extending the first year syllabus to the second year, omitting topics to be studied in the second year and fooling students. The ADC tried to connect with Dr Ancy Jose, chairman of the Board of Studies, BMM, but she was unavailable for comment. The ADC then contacted Dr Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor of the MU, who said, “We will be discussing the issue with the Board of Studies as soon as possible. BMC's support for the cause: Ex-mayor Shubha Raul on Monday spoke about some proposals that she had put forth in the BMC in a previous meeting, with regard to acid attacks. Records of people who buy sulphuric acid should be maintained by people who sell the acid If the purchaser doesn't have a valid licence to purchase the acid then he should not be given the acid People who want to sell sulphuric acid with a concentration of more than 15 per cent, should have a special permission and licence from the FDA Emergency kits at public hospitals must have alkaline spray as a

t's been a week since Narayan Rane resigned from his position, but the Congress high command has kept the sulking leader waiting. As a result the Konkan strongman is in the docks, waiting desperately for the party bosses to make a decision. Aspiring chief minister Rane is upset with the party for not giving him the top post which he claims was promised to him when he left the Shiv Sena to join the Congress in 2005. The furious former Shivsainik, who resigned from the cabinet last Monday, met Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi to explain his stand on the need for a change of guard in the state. However, it seems Rane has failed to persuade the party high

Narayan Rane command to let him have his way. The AICC has not yet hinted anything to the upset leader. Now he is

waiting for an appointment with party president Sonia Gandhi. A senior Congress leader, on the condition of anonymity, said Rane who resigned as the State Industries Minister wanted the revenue portfolio and also the state chief's post. Though the Congress leadership has preferred to be tight-lipped and is unlikely to consider both his demands. The senior leader also pointed out that Rane could get either one of the posts. Sources in the Congress further said that Rane was plainly told that with the elections round the corner, changing the Chief Minister now was not so easy. But they were confident that Sonia will sort out his issues. These indications from AICC came a day after Rane met with the Congress vice president.

tients develop chronic hepatitis with damaged liver and symptoms of tiredness and weakness. Twenty per cent of them over a few years will develop fatal liver cirrhosis or damage and five per cent suffer from liver cancer. In spite of such severe repercussions, drugs to treat the condition are unaffordable,” said Dr Nagral. In an attempt to make these drugs affordable for patients in India, CLF and Think Foundation had petitioned the Union Health Minister Dr Harshvardhan a month ago. The petition also suggests that Indian pharmaceutical companies be engaged in producing a cheaper variant of the expensive drugs. “Besides making drugs affordable, the state should ensure safe blood transfusion. Currently there is a window period of close to two months between testing the blood and manifestation of the virus in the sample. Before the window period expires, blood could be transfused to an unsuspecting patient. A nucleic acid test (NAT) mechanism for testing needs to be introduced across all labs to prevent infections. NAT reduces the window period for reve-

lation to one week,” said Vinay Shetty, vice president of Think Foundation. A joint study of CLF and Think Foundation that observed 3,100 thalassemia patients, out of which 1,600 were from Mumbai and the remaining from Lucknow, Chennai, Hyderabad and Gujarat, revealed that ten per cent of all thalassemic patients in Mumbai had hepatitis C. In order to understand the intensity of the disease in Mumbai, Metropolis Healthcare conducted an inclusive survey on 78,102 samples. Out of the samples studies, 20.28 per cent was found positive for hepatitis B, 32.74 per cent of children were identified with the symptoms of hepatitis B. The second maximum samples for the hepatitis B belonged to 20 to 40 years. 17.97 per cent of the total sample was found hepatitis C positive. The maximum positive samples for hepatitis C belonged to the age group of 20 to 30 years. Out of the 10,534 samples in the age group of 0 to 10 years, 3,254 tested positive with Hepatitis C.

Unlike abroad, palliative treatment is not a popular concept in India. Such treatment centres in India are rare. Unfortunately, unlike abroad, people in our country don't even know about that a concept like palliative treatment exists. The SAS provides patients with palliative treatment to control the immense pain. The service is absolutely free of cost. Food and shelter apart, the shelter also provides them with counselling, complete care, clothes, sanitary materials and a loving atmosphere.

ple who are suffering from such deadly ailments.” Sister Felci finds her work great and consider it as a service to God. She said, “The best feeling is to see the improvement in the condition of a patient, and the worst one is to see them die. But we do our level best to reduce their pain and because of this they can die in peace. We develop an emotional band with every patient and become their family. It' high time our county needs many more palliative care centres. We need to take care of those who are suffering from ailments which unfortunately can't be treated. But we can try to give them the maximum relief possible.” volunteers, police mobile vans and an ambulance will be deployed at each beach.” “A team of 50 security guards in all will be present,” he added. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

ven as state Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) president Devendra Fadnavis argued that all the six constituent partners of the BJP-Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti alliance were mature enough and that everybody's aspirations will be taken into consideration, two of Mahayuti alliance – Ramdas Athawale's Republican Party of IndiaAthawale (RPI-A) and Mahadev Jankar's Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) – have demanded 40 and 59 assembly seats respectively. More than the Sena, sources disclosed that the BJP leadership felt the demands of the two Mahayuti allies were unrealistic. Speaking to newspersons later at MAVIM near Mantralaya yesterday, Fadnavis stated that all the Mahayuti allies will meet again either on August 5 or August 7 and by August 15, a final decision will be taken on seat sharing by the Mahayuti alliance. Mahayuti sources disclosed that although both RPI-A and RSP have also staked claim to some sitting seats of the Sena-BJP. However, sources in the RPI-A Continued from pg 1 « Council Vinod Tawde reminded the MNS chief that when the issue had flared up some years ago he had advised the Marathi-speaking population from the disputed region of Belgaum to leave the path of agitation and integrate themselves with the state of Karnataka. The BJP-Shiv Sena-led Mahayuti leaders Mahadev Jankar (RSP), MP Raju Shetti (SSS), Sumant Gaikwad (RPI-A), Subhash Desai (Shiv Sena), Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Khadse (both BJP) and Vinayak Mete (Shiv Sangram) held talks at MAVIM near Mantralaya on Monday to discuss seat sharing and common campaign strategy. and RSP did admit that in the negotiations, the figures will come down to around 15 to 20 seats. Significantly, MP Raju Shetti (Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna) and Vinayak Mete (Shiv Sangram) did not make their demands public. Sources further disclosed that Jankar is staking claim to Assembly seats in Marathwada and western Maharashtra. His demands could unnerve Shetti whose stronghold happens to be western Maharashtra and Mete whose stronghold is Marathwada. RPI-A leader Sumant Gaikwad disclosed that all the allies have resolved to contest the ensuing Assembly elec-

tions under the banner of the Shivshakti-Bhimshakti. Fadnavis clarified that the leaders basically took stock of each others respective strengths. The meeting resolved to hold joint election campaign rallies and set up a joint committee to draft the Mahayuti election manifesto. Fadnavis refuted the contention that the Mahayuti was waiting for the ruling Congress-NCP alliance to finalise its election strategy. He added that the Mahayuti would not base its election strategy on the basis of the Congress-NCP which he remarked has now accepted defeat in the ensuing Assembly polls.

Sena will raise the issue in Parliament and appealed to all the MPs from Maharashtra to support their cause. Raut added that if the BJP-led NDA government does not intervene in the matter soon, then the Sena will take to the streets. He further added that the Sena would not like the aggravate the situation as the Sena is part of the NDA government. Raj Thackeray, on the other hand, demanded that the Centre intervene in the matter and solve it on priority. He added that a huge uproar is created all over the country when he does the same thing against migrants in Maharashtra. The MNS chief remarked that the BJP never had any interest in resolving the vexed Maharashtra-Karnataka border issue. It may be recalled that two years ago, leaders of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti had called on the MNS chief to enlist his support after the Karnataka government had set aside the election of Manda Balekundri as Mayor of the Belgaum Municipal Corporation. At that point of time, Raj Thackeray had questioned the insistence of the Marathi-speaking population from the disputed region to merge with Maharashtra and had advised them to reconsider the demand.

disclosed that the Mahayuti allies will lead a delegation to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to seek the Centre's intervention. Senior Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, in his reaction, demanded imposition of the President's rule in the disputed area. He added that the

Ponder awhile... “It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Riots over removal of temple loudspeaker A

LL over the country, loudspeaker are being used in mosques, churches and temples. It is a fact that a lot of noise emanates from most of the religious institutions. The highly decibel sound disturbs peace and sleep early in the morning and late at night. Maybe sometime, they curse, but only under the breath. A tolerant attitude is seen in the response of people of all communities. The Uttar Pradesh government has shown now that it openly makes an effort at polarisation. Some of the communities are feeling they are discriminated against: The Hindus in Uttar Pradesh complain they are being sidelined and the minority community is being favoured. There could have been some complaints about the nuisance caused by the loudspeaker, but the issue must have been resolved in a fair way without the authorities giving away to their preferences and prejudices. By his partisan attitude, the chief minister is causing trouble. A big protest is being staged in Moradabad by the BJP. It has become a communal clash. The police have taken tough steps but the agitation is not still over. The UP police have used excessive force while dealing with the situation. What must be stated is that it is unfair and unjust to remove loudspeaker from any place of worship.

MAGINE renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore seeking admission to the Calcutta Club, a preserve of the British, and getting rejected. Faiz Ahmed Faiz, the legendary Urdu poet, receiving a similar treatment at Lahore’s Punjab Club in Pakistan and Nazarul Islam at the Dhaka Club. In all these cases, the public outrage would have been difficult to assuage. The white rulers saw to it that the leading clubs in a country where they had ruled remained an exclusive place for them and their elitist friends. Refusal to the non-whites’ clubs was part of apartheid. Posh clubs would have a billboard at the entrance saying: Dogs and Indians are not allowed. Shocking it may sound, but the white rulers enjoyed humiliating dark Indians, apart from heaping on them other indignities. The upper stratum of society which rubbed shoulders with the white and lived more or less in the western style was given entry straightway. Therefore, it was not surprising to find the same members of the society replacing the white and making clubs exclusively for their use. The club management prescribed dress code, the western style, essential and banned local dress within the premises.

Banning dhoti Recently a club in Chennai went to extent of banning dhoti consequently. A Madras High Court judge wearing dhoti was refused entry. There was an outcry when this happened. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa called the act an 'insult' to Tamil culture. The AIDMK chief promised a quick law is passed to put an end to such a practice. The CM has also promised prompt action against the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) in Chepauk, which had denied admission to Justice D. Hariparanthaman and two other guests, ostensibly for violating the dress code of the club. Members and their guests are expected to be well-dressed, which for men is usually interpreted as Western attire. “The way of tying the dhoti in Tamil Nadu style may leave it to a number of aspects of exposure. Many clubs cite this as a reason for not allowing guests in dhotis,” a member of the Madras Club said. However, in a state where most politicians prefer a dhoti and a white shirt over the Western attire, charges of indecent exposure have backfired. R. Gandhi, 77, a senior advocate who was turned away along with Justice Hari-

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar the reason why clubs of the past are kept as they were, although they do not fit into India’s reality of austere living. Authoritarian police is another relic which has been retained, with more powers to silence the opponents. It was an investiture ceremony where top police officials were being honoured for the outstanding service they had rendered to trace and punish those who had committed excesses during the Emergency. In the midst of the ceremony, then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi got up and ended the ceremony. Another example is the disdain with which the Police Reforms Commission report was treated by here. It confirms fears that the Shah Commission proceedings may have been destroyed. In fact, even a copy of the report is not available either in market or in government offices. Does the Congress believe that the Emergency would disappear from the history itself? At least, the Police Reforms Commission report exists, although its recommendations have not been implemented because most state chief ministers are not less authoritative than Mrs. Gandhi was. The BJP feels that it can afford to give the impression of being liberal at a time when even the leftist parties are gripped with soft Hindutva. The Congress is seen steadily losing its secular credentials in the past few years despite the fact that Muslims, by and

id-ul-Fitr, also known as Ramzan Eid, is celebrated by Muslims across the world, at the end of the month of Ramzan. It signifies the breaking of the fasting period, with the sighting of new crescent moon in the evening, on the last day of Ramzan. The celebration extends to a fiesta of three days and is also called Choti Eid, starting on the first day of Shawwal (tenth month of the Islamic calendar). On this day the observers of the fast greet each other in their local language and according to their respective traditions. The significance of Eid-ul-Fitr stems from the special meaning it holds for the entire Muslim community. Legend says that Prophet Mohammad had laid down Eid-ulFitr and Eid-ul-Adha as days of rejoicing and feasting for Muslims, in the remembrance of Allah. Since then, Muslims fast for the com-

I realize that some Muslims out of desperation have taken to violence. But this is the path Hindu militant organizations like the Bajrag Dal, Ram Sena and Vishwa Hindu Parishad want the community to take. The guilt of these organizations has been proved from the bomb blasts at Malegaon, Ajmer and Hyderabad. Initially, the suspicion was on Muslims — as is the police practice — and the Muslim youth was picked up. At Hyderabad, they were beaten by the police. But a detailed investigation revealed a Hindu hand. Had there been accountability, such chauvinist deeds by the police would not have taken place. Young men have been arrested when law courts have found that there is no evidence against them. Who made the mistake? Who is responsible for illegal arrests? He should be punished if the impression that the Muslim youth was picked up without any rhyme or reason is to be removed. A commission has also been appointed under the chairmanship of former Chief Justice of India J.C. Verma to suggest changes in rape laws and the quantum of punishment. The students have asked for death penalty or chemical castration. Yet, it is strange that the government acted only under pressure. The authorities pressed the panic button because for many days all roads leading to India Gate were closed and even water cannons were used to push back the agitating students behind the barricades the police had erected. The lathi-charge was uncalled for and widely condemned. The biggest support to the politicians is the police which are supposed to maintain law and order. The force has to be purged of sycophants and sluggish elements. But for that to happen, the police have to be made independent so that they are free of pressure from politicians. The worst example is in Punjab and Haryana where the police force has become a private army of chief ministers.

e’re all celebrating the onset of peach season, but do you know about its origins? Peaches come from a tree that is native to China (which is why the country is still the world’s largest producer of the fruit), and belong to the same family that includes cherries and plums. The fruit is so popular, it even has a colour named after it! Rich in nutrients and flavour, peaches are a delicious combination of tart and sweet, making them easy to cook with. Take a look at everything you need to know about this delicious fruit.

Read on as we tell you about the major health benefits that this lovely fruit offers: " High in fibre, peaches are a great option if you want to lose weight. They keep you full for longer and stop you from overeating, or snacking constantly. An added bonus is that one peach contains only 30-35 calories and no fat.

Yes, you read that right. Eating peaches can actually help lower your stress levels. The fruit is referred to as the fruit of calmness, because it contains a natural sedative that helps to relax you and reduces anxiety and stress. ! Peaches are rich in antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid, which helps kill free radicals in your body — a build-up of which can cause cancer. Apart from this, their high antioxidant content also ensures good cardiovascular health and helps to reduce the effects of ageing. ! Continued from pg 13 « Say goodbye to scars: The next time you get cut, think of using a peach to help the scar heal quicker. Eating peaches can actually help improve your immunity, fight infections and of course, heal superficial cuts and scrapes in a jiffy. Demolish dryness: Peaches regenerate skin tissue, which means that if you have dry skin, they will moisturise it, leaving it feeling supple, toned and soft. All you have to do is rub a piece of peach directly on your skin to give it an instant glow. Peaches also get rid of dead skin cells, so they are a good ingredient for a scrub. Wrinkle away: Because peaches have vitamin C, they are a great way to fight wrinkles. They also help get rid of dark circles, spots and blemishes and they contain several macronutrients that help tighten your pores and make your skin supple. Protect yourself: Don’t stop using your sunscreen, but think about picking up a peach as well, to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Peaches are loaded with vitamins, nutrients and minerals that protect your skin from several things, including harsh UV rays. Apply a mashed peach to your face as a pack or mask after going outdoors, to protect your skin from sun damage. Keep it on: We mean your hair! If you suffer from hair loss, peaches are the perfect solution. The nutrient content will help prevent hair loss. Cleanse & nourish: If you’ve ever wondered why so many hair masks contain peach, here’s the reason. A dirty scalp will lead to hair fall and peaches help cleanse it thoroughly. Not only will you have soft, shiny hair, you’ll also have a clean scalp!

Like with most juicy fruits, peaches can be notoriously hard to choose. They might look fine on the outside, but they can either be flavourless or spoilt, if you don’t know what to look for. The easiest way to choose a ripe peach is to smell it. They should have a deliciously peachy aroma and if they don’t, it indicates that they are not ripe yet and will be flavourless. Then, give the peach a squeeze — avoid ones that are very hard, as well as ones that seem like they would turn into pulp if you drop them. Also look for both red and yellow colours — ripe peaches will have more red patches with a few patches of yellow. Finally, remember to buy peaches only when they are in season (May to August). Do not buy them when they’re not in season, as they could be artificially ripened. >> A mix of yellow and red colours is a sign of a healthy, ripe peach

Cooking with

Expert speaks We spoke to Sneha Gala, a nutrition expert at Gold’s Gym, India. She tells a little more about the many health benefits of quinoa. “Apart from being rich in protein and low in carbohydrates, quinoa is also a good source of riboflavin and can help reduce the frequency of attacks amongst those, who regularly suffer from migraines. It also increases metabolism and improves heart health, making it a superfood in the real sense of word,” she tells us. Also available in the form of flour and flakes, this ingredient adapts well to everyday, Indian recipes. “Long cooking time, or masalas do not cut down quinoa’s nutritive value; in fact they only enhance its taste, so experiment with the ingredient by using it in your favourite recipes,” adds Sneha.

quinoa Quinoa is considered to be a superfood, but if you don’t like the types of dishes that use quinoa as an ingredient, Shirley Mistry has the perfect solution. Try these Indian-inspired recipes to incorporate quinoa in your diet

Q

uinoa is a kind of wonder grain that provides so many nutrients, that even if it is the sole ingredient in your meal, you will still get all the nutrition that your body needs. Quinoa is extremely high in protein and unsaturated fat and has a low glycemic index, making it an ideal grain for diabetics. Compared to other grains, quinoa has an extremely low carbohydrate content and is enriched with nutrients such as manganese, potassium, phosphorus, copper, zinc and vitamin E. Apart from being rich in dietary fibre and iron, it also contains more calcium than milk and is packed with antioxidants. As if this wasn’t enough, the grain has all eight amino acids that your body needs. But, if quinoa porridge seems unappetising and quinoa crackers seem like they require too much of an effort to make, try these Indian quinoa-based recipes and boost the nutrition value of your daily meals.

Quinoa Pulao Perfect for a Saturday lunch at home, or for your children’s tiffinbox, this recipe substitutes rice with quinoa, but it is equally delicious and satisfying. ingredients 2 cups quinoa (uncooked), 2 tbsp oil, 1 tbsp ginger paste, 1 tbsp garlic paste, 1 bay leaf, 1 inch piece of cinnamon, 2 green cardamom pods, ½ tsp cumin seeds, 3-5 whole black peppercorns (roughly crushed), ¼ tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp garam masala powder, ½ tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, 2 medium-sized onions (sliced into thin halfmoons), 1 cup corn kernels, 1 cup green peas, 1 cup carrots (finely diced), 1 green chilli (finely chopped), salt to taste, 3 cups of water, lime juice to taste Method l Wash the quinoa in water, let it soak for 30 minutes, drain and set aside. l In a deep bottomed vessel, heat the oil and add the whole spices — bay leaf, cinnamon, cardamom, cumin seeds and crushed peppercorn — and heat them till you can smell the aroma. l Add the onions, ginger, garlic, green chillies and turmeric and sautée till the onions are translucent. l Add the quinoa, and sautée it for five minutes. l Next, add the corn, peas and carrots, along with the cumin powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. l Cook all the ingredients for 2-3 minutes and then add the water and salt. l Once the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat to a simmer, cover the quinoa and let it cook for around 20 minutes, or till the water is

fully absorbed by the grains. l After 20 minutes, turn off the heat and let the quinoa sit for five minutes with the lid on. l Then, fluff up the pulao with a fork, and squeeze some lime juice over it, before serving.

Quinoa uPMa An alternative to the usual semolina (rava) upma, this dish is perfect for breakfast, and also makes for a filling evening snack. ingredients 1 finely chopped onion, 1 cup peas or corn, 3 cups cooked quinoa, 4 tbsp peanuts, 2 tbsp channa dal, 2 tbsp urad dal, 1 tsp cumin seeds, ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp red chilli powder, a pinch of asafoetida (hing), 2 tbsp oil, salt to taste, chaat masala to taste Method l In a pan, heat the oil and add the asafoetida. Once the onions turn brown, add the corn or peas, turmeric and chilli powder, and cook till the vegetables are done. l Add in the quinoa and toss it well, so that the vegetables and spices are equally distributed through the quinoa. l Sprinkle a little chaat masala over the upma, before serving it hot.

Quinoa khEEr Kheer is extremely comforting and a warm bowl after lunch or dinner, is an indulgent way to finish off any meal. Try this quinoa recipe for a healthier variation.

>> If you are diabetic, quinoa dishes such as quinoa upma and quinoa kheer, are the healthiest option for you

ingredients ½ cup quinoa (uncooked), 1 cup water, 1 tsp ghee, 4 finely chopped dates, 4 tsp raisins, 4 tsp finely chopped pistachios, 4 tsps almonds (slivered), 3 cups of skim milk, a pinch of saffron, 3 tbsp sugar, ½ cup quinoa, 1 tsp ghee/ butter Method l Rinse the quinoa thoroughly and add it to the water, bringing it to a boil. l Then, cook the quinoa on a medium flame, till the seeds become translucent. Drain the excess water and set the quinoa aside. l Next, melt the ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan, add the dates, pistachios, almonds and raisins and sautée them for a minute. l Add the cooked quinoa, milk, saffron and sugar to the pan and mix well until all the ingredients are well incorporated. l Once the milk comes to a boil, reduce the flame to a simmer and cook the mixture until the milk reduces to a third of its original volume. l Remember to stir frequently to ensure that the milk doesn’t burn. l Cool the kheer slightly, until it is warm and then serve. Cooking quinoa perfectly l When you are cooking quinoa, maintain a 1:2 ratio, using one part quinoa and two parts of water. l A cup of uncooked quinoa, will yield roughly three cups of cooked quinoa. l An easy way to tell whether the quinoa is cooked is by seeing if the grains have gone completely translucent and if the white, stringy bits have detached themselves from the grain.

Bad smells, obviously, have the opposite effect. You don’t even need to be awake, since these smells affect your subconsciousness.

Starting your day on a healthy note is one of the most integral ways to live a healthy life, and while eating a hearty breakfast is important, there’s a lot more you can do to start your day well. Dev Goswami recommends you answer these questions to see whether you need to change your morning routine

Then you’re probably a senior citizen now! This is still being researched, but studies so far indicate that dreams devoid of too much colour are more prevalent among those who grew up in such a time. If you are young, but grew up on black and white films, you could still have these dreams, but watching one right before bed won’t do the trick.

ealthy morning habits are extremely important because they not only ensure that you are upbeat and full of energy through the day, they also keep you healthy. They help prevent health complications, keep you fit and improve your emotional wellbeing. If, after answering the questions above, you’ve realised that you need to inculcate better habits into your morning schedule, these tips will help: wAke uP right: We’re sure that by now, you are well aware of the importance of a uniform sleep schedule. So, all that we’re going to do today is to remind you to ensure that you wake up at the same time, every day, regardless of whether you have to go to work or not. sPend tiMe with loved ones: Your emotional health plays an important role in your overall wellbeing. So, instead of getting into arguments (if you begin your day upset and angry, you will be in a bad mood all day long) spend a few minutes with your family. You will feel happy and upbeat, which is one of the best ways to begin your day. A little solitude: Do not overload your brain with emails or social media notifications. Spending a little time with your thoughts (try meditating), will ensure that you are relaxed in the morning. This is one of the

best ways to beat stress, which can otherwise have a negative impact on your health. For the same reason, avoid sleeping late so that you don’t wake up with a start, worried that you’ll get late for work — this stresses your brain and your body, which will leave you feeling out of control and anxious. stAy Active: Even if you do exercise later in the day, it is important that you include a few minutes of physical activity in your morning regimen. This will keep you energised and crank up your metabolism. A short walk or even spot jogging will do the trick. Also remember that after 7-8 hours of lying in the same position, your body is going to be sore. So, stretch your muscles to physically relax your body. wAter first: One of the very first things that you should do every morning is drink a glass of water. Drinking warm water is a much healthier option as it not only boosts your metabolism, but also helps flush out toxins. Drinking coffee, tea or even juice can actually result in acid reflux. Speaking of coffee, do not depend on caffeine to awaken your senses. An easier and much healthier alternative is to spend a few minutes out in the sun — your body will respond naturally, making you feel alert and less sleepy. Make sure that you do not start your day with more than one cup of coffee.

Weird Weight loss Do you want to lose weight, but find the idea of exercises and diets too boring to suit your wacky personality? Then Yamini Walia has some funky tips to make shedding those extra kilos more fun

T

here are several ways to lose weight, and while you may be aware about the common ones such as working out at the gym, running and dancing, you may not have heard of some not-so-normal, but effective ways. These may put you at risk of coming across as slightly insane, but if you’re willing to let your quirky side out in the open, we suggest you try these tips out. Read on as we tell you more.

>> If your aim is to shed some kilos, eating in pyjamas may not be a very wise option

We’re not saying that eating in pyjamas will make you fat, but it will definitely make you snack a little more than you should. Baggy clothes give you the illusion of a slimmer frame and so, you care less about your figure. On the other hand, wearing extremely tight clothes while you eat will make you feel uncomfortable. So, strike a balance by wearing clothes that are slightly fitting, so that you can factor in your stomach bulge before you devour that second piece of cake.

Mirror, Mirror If you look in the mirror when you’re eating, you are bound to consume less food, as what you will see might not be a very pleasing sight. You may not believe us, but researchers from Arizona State University and Erasmus University, Rotterdam, conducted experiments to prove this theory. The researchers concluded that this happens because seeing ourselves eat makes us more aware of our bodies as we do not want to watch ourselves overeat.

aLL DrESSED up in bLuE There is a reason why restaurants stay away from predominantly blue décor. It is because blue is an appetite suppressant. According to research, people eat less under blue light, because it makes the food look less appealing. So, if you want to lose weight, decorate your kitchen in blue, eat on blue plates and as weird as it sounds, wear a blue dress when you’re sitting down for a heavy meal.

Researchers from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and the University of Akron, found that both men and women consumed fewer calories when dining with men than with women. While dining out with male companions, women cut down on their food consumption in order to appear more feminine and while dining with their females, men consume more in order to appear more masculine. So, choosing a male companion, is beneficial for both men and women.

Phantom Pain Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 29, 2014

Not many people know about phantom pain, which is commonly experienced by amputees. Shirley Mistry tells you what it is, what causes it and how it is treated What is it?

Smoking. Sexual intercourse. l Exposure to cold climates. l Extreme changes in weather. Keeping track of what triggers phantom pain can help you and your doctor to tackle it better. While you might not be able to avoid certain triggers, such as a change in temperature, knowing what triggers your phantom pain will help you prepare for it better and in this case, even prevent it, by staying indoors and keeping the residual limb warm. l l

Simply put, phantom pain, or phantom limb pain (PLP) refers to a sensation of pain originating from the area of an amputee’s limb that doesn’t exist. Even though the limb is cut off from the nervous system (which is responsible for the sensation of pain), the pain can be excruciating. Experienced by nearly 80% of amputees, the pain varies from a mild twitching and a burning sensation, to twisting and searing pain. While phantom pain usually disappears or reduces after a while, if it is present for more than six months, the chances of improvement are low.

Why does it occur? Even though a part of the limb may now be missing, the nerve endings at the stump continue to send pain signals to your brain, making your body feel as though the limb is still intact and like you are actually experiencing excruciating pain. In certain cases, the brain retains the memory of the pain experienced during the injury that led to the amputation, which causes phantom pain. It is extremely painful, and is described by patients to be akin to experiencing the painful event that led to amputation, all over again. Sometimes, it is your spinal cord that sends signals to your brain, instead of the nerve endings. In addition to pain, some people also experience tingling and cramping sensations, and also feel extremely hot or cold. Apart from pain, the range of sensations that you can experience include all sensations that your limb was capable of feeling, before it was amputated. Common triggers of phantom pain include: l Touch.

Exciting new research has raised hopes of humans being able to use their own muscles as implants. Dev Goswami finds out more

I

n a successful experiment, the findings of which have the potential to positively affect cardiovascular care, a group of researchers have managed to convert a regular heart muscle into a specialised one that ensures that your heart beats in a particular rhythm — just like a pacemaker does. A pacemaker uses an electric current to provide a steady heartbeat. While they’ve been proven to be life-saving, installing one requires an invasive surgery that carries risks of complications and infections. A group of cardiologists from the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, USA, were able to create a gene that had the potential to change and control how a muscle functions. They then injected this gene into the heart of a pig (pigs have hearts that are very similar to the human heart) which allowed them to program the muscle into a cell that can

maintain your natural heart beat. That’s not all, the researchers also observed that the reprogrammed muscle made sure that their hearts beat faster when the pigs exercised and slower when they were at rest. Dr. Eduardo Marbán, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and leader of the research team, was quoted as saying, “This development heralds a new era of gene therapy, where genes are used not only to correct a deficiency disorder, but actually to convert one type of cell into another to treat a disease.” The researchers have increased hope that human trials could begin in as soon as three years and also believe that the procedure could initially be used to help people who cannot use an artificial pacemaker because of complications. However, this procedure could go on to replace artificial pacemakers in the future, reducing the need for invasive surgery.

>> Programming a muscle to ensure a steady heart-beat can be of great help in the field of heart care

treating phantom pain medical approach: Different types of drugs are used to treat phantom pain. Most commonly, a combination of different medicine is used to disrupt the process of your nerve endings sending pain signals to your brain. Also, specific medication is administered to disrupt your brain’s perception of these signals. Apart from this, anti-depressants are also prescribed to help the patient from revisiting the painful event over and over (which is a common trigger for phantom pain), along with beta-blockers and muscle relaxants. non-medical approach: Apart from medicines, several other therapies can help relieve phantom pain. Acupuncture and regular massages are among the most effective treatments. Apart from this, elevating the residual limb, propping it up on pillows and consulting a psychologist can help the patient understand his/ her condition better and curb mental triggers. Music therapy and mirror box therapy — a treatment that eases the process of unclenching tightened muscles and adapting to the amputation, are also used to reduce phantom pain.

« problem solver:

>> Instead of gimmicky fairness creams, apply raw milk on your face to improve your skin tone

ask our beauty expert

barbara, our beauTy experT, wIll help fIx your problems

dear barbara, I have uneven, bumpy skin on my knees and it is a shade or two darker than the rest of the skin on my legs. I love wearing dresses and skirts, but my blotchy knees make me very self-conscious. I have tried scrubbing them on a regular basis, but the skin is still bumpy and isn’t getting any lighter. What should I do? — shubha rajan, malad dear shubha, This is a very common problem, so, fortunately for you, there are several natural remedies. Start off by using coarse, exfoliating body wash or body scrub on your knees, every alternate day. Skip using a loofah and use a body brush instead. The bristles on the brush are coarser, and are more suited for stubborn areas such as your knees and elbows, giving you smooth skin, with fewer bumps in just a single use. You can also try scrubbing some lemon and tomato juice on the area and letting it dry before you wash it off. These ingredients bleach your skin naturally and will help reduce pigmentation significantly. If this doesn’t help and you don’t see any visible results in two weeks, consult a dermatologist, who can prescribe cream to help disperse the pigmentation.

>> Use exfoliating bodywash or scrub to even the skin tone on your knees

dear barbara, In the past year, I have suffered from several bouts of severe acne. Even though I tried not to touch my face, there are some scars that have been left behind by the pimples. I have tried using fairness creams, but they have been of no help, as the spots are still very prominent, and can only be covered by foundation. What should I do? — megha sahay, bhiwandi dear megha, Acne scars are pesky and can marr your skin’s natural beauty. But, there are several ways to lighten these marks. Apply lemon juice directly on your scars, or dilute it with some rose water if your skin is very dry or sensitive. Leave it on for 5-10 minutes before washing it off. You can also apply honey in a similar manner. After you wash it off, apply a few drops of olive oil on the spots and massage until it has been absorbed by your skin. As a weekly treatment, you can try this simple spot treatment mask. Mash 2-3 disprins in a few drops of water and add a teaspoon of honey. Scrub the spots with this pack, let it dry completely and then wash it off. Following this regimen regularly will help reduce the appearance of scars.

Magic

milk

While you may agree that milk is a very nutritious food, you may not be aware of its skin benefits. Yamini Walia tells you why milk needs to be part of your daily beauty regime

A

s children, we were all advised to drink milk every day to grow into strong, healthy adults. But, nutritional benefits aside, milk also has great beauty benefits. In fact, it has been used as a beauty aid for centuries — it is said that the secret behind Cleopatra’s (Queen of Egypt) beautiful skin was milk. Read on as we tell you how beneficial milk is for your skin.

TreaT sunburns Sunburns are a common problem with weather like ours. While we advocate the use of sunscreens, we also think that nothing is more beneficial than buttermilk to treat a sunburn. Directly apply buttermilk to your skin to soothe and heal sunburns.

IT Improves your complexIon Fairness creams may promise lighter skin, but milk will even out your skin tone while keeping it healthy and moisturised. You can either apply raw milk on your face and leave it on for 10 minutes, or use it to make a face pack with honey and lemon juice, for a clearer complexion. The face pack also acts as a mild bleach. Apart from this, drinking milk daily will give your skin a healthy glow.

bId adIeu To fIne lInes & wrInkles The combination of banana and milk has several health benefits, and it also gives your face a natural glow. Make a

smooth paste by mashing half a banana with a few teaspoons of raw milk and apply it on clean, damp skin. Leave it on for 15 minutes and rinse it off with water. Over time, you will notice that the mixture helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

IT removes dead skIn cells Whoever said that skim milk should only be used to lose weight was wrong! Skim milk also helps remove dead skin cells and is an exfoliant. All you need to do is dissolve some salt in boiling water and add four cups of non-fat milk to it. After steeping the milk in lukewarm water for 20 minutes, use it as a scrub to help remove dead skin cells.

IT Is a naTural cleanser To keep your skin looking fresh, dip a cotton ball in raw milk and apply it all over your face. Rinse your face with water after five minutes and you’ll notice the difference almost instantly. You can also prepare your own cleanser by blending two slices of papaya with raw milk. Apply this mixture on your face and neck and wash it off with cold water after a few minutes.

IT shrInks your pores Large facial pores are unsightly and can be difficult to fix. To solve this problem, use sour cream or sour milk as they help shrink large pores. Directly apply the cream or milk to your face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Follow this routine every day to reduce the appearance of large pores.

Bakre favours music 24x7

A BRILLIANT KUCHIPUDI PERFORMANCE

K

ALABHARATI, the cultural wing of the Karnataka Sangh, recently featured young Nishad Bakre in a morning concert. Bakre gave a solo performance on this platform. After many years of giving competent vocal support to leading singers like Ulhas Kashalkar and Ram Deshpande, Bakre has developed into an independent classical singer. While it is difficult to pigeonhole the 33-year-old Thane resident into any particular gharana, his music can be described as a mixture of elements from the Gwalior, Jaipur and Agra gharanas. Bakre, who trained under Deshpande “in the gurukul tradition”, also benefited from the guidance he received from the late Dinkar Kaikini, one of the most creative musicians of our time. Bakre’s talent was evident from the time he would lend vocal support to other singers on stage. He would be alert enough to pick up a phrase thrown by the lead singer during a recital and expand the musical idea in his own way. This helped him train his voice which became flexible enough to reel off fast tonal patterns. He inherited his talent in music from his father Sadashiv Bakre, a respected critic. He is also a recipient of the prestigious scholarship instituted by the NCPA to commemorate legendary singer Kesarbai Kerkar. “My education under Dr. Ram Deshpande was strictly according to the Gurukul tradition. According to this tradition the pupil stays at the home of the master, helps him in his household chores and the education goes on for the entire day or even during night hours. This is nothing but music 24x7. Such a system gives the pupil a thorough grounding in ragas,” he said in an interview. Bakre was picked up by the current star vocalist Ulhas Kashalkar for vocal support during Kashalkar's concerts. Bakre has benefited immensely by the insights into ragas given to him by Kaikini. In the recent concert, he began with the Jaipur Attrauli gharana raga Bahaduri Todi and then went on to sing Gaudsarang and also Patdeep. He was given superb tabla support by Abhay Datar and harmonium by Anant Joshi.

By Vijay Shanker

S part of the Umang series, National Centre for Performing Arts presented a brilliant Kuchipudi recital by T. Lakshmi Reddi at the Godrej Academy Dance Theatre auditorium. Elegance, vitality and precision formed the highlight of the performance. Blessed with a striking personality for a danseuse, Lakshmi commenced with the beautiful composition written by Lingaraj Urs set to Nellambari ragam incorporating the varied manifestations and the beauty of Goddess Sringalahiri. This was followed by the Javali describing the Virahotkandita nayika, the pangs of separation, while remembering the moment of joyous union too. Lakshmi has a natural flair for expressions which was evident throughout the performance. Lakshmi is the ardent disciple of Padmashri Jayarama Rao and Vanashree Rao and has imbibed all the necessary qualities to rise as a fine performer. In the Meera Bhajan in Desh raag, the dancer reveals how the saint poetess, devoid of stiff opposition from the family, continues to be devoted to Lord Krishna and feels that she is wedded to the Lord. In another Javali, Entati Kuluke written by Subbarayar, the nayika is spurned by her lover and is angry at the deceit by her lover. The pretentious anger and the jealousy were well enacted by the dancer. The programme concluded with the number Jaya Jaya Durge, portraying the virile and benevolent aspect of the Goddess, the killer of the demon Mahishasur and the protector of all mankind. This number was the piece-deresistance of the evening with commendable abhinaya and technical quality revealing mastery over rhythmic patterns while dancing on the rim of the brass plate. Lakshmi received fine orchestral support from Guru Jayarama Rao on nattuvagam and the commendable vocalist and the orchestral team. Lakshmi will some day be among the frontrankers in the Kuchipudi dance style.

Parathlete Jai Deep finishes fouth in discus throw

Indian parathlete Jai Deep failed to replicate even his personal best as he missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in the men's discus throw (F42/44) event of the 20th Commonwealth Games here. Jai Deep covered 38.68m in his best attempt which also happened to his first. But it was a disappointing performance given Deep's season's best is 40.48m. His personal best is also way better at 41.10m. England's Dan Greaves clinched the gold with a throw of 59.21m while Welshman Aled Davies finished a distant second with 46.83m. Nigeria's Richard Okigbazi covered a personal best of 39.38m to pip Deep for the bronze medal.

Shooting pair events back for next CWG

India's push for getting the shooting pair events reinstated in the Commonwealth Games has succeeded with the Commonwealth Shooting Federation's General Assembly agreeing to have them back for the next edition in Australia. Besides, Baljit Singh Sethi, the National Rifles Association Advisor, was elected unopposed as VicePresident of the CSF at the General Assembly meeting here yesterday. "In a major decision, the General Assembly of Commonwealth Shooting Federation has unanimously approved the proposal of India to reinstate Pair Events in the Commonwealth Games," the NRAI said in a statement. The pair events were removed from the programme of Commonwealth Games this year.

Pitchford sinks India in men's team TT

India's top singles player Achanta Sharath Kamal and Harmeet Desai were tamed by an energetic Liam Pitchford as India lost the men's team table tennis semifinal 1-3 to England, here Sunday. Kamal, ranked five places above Pitchford at number 50, lost the opening singles match 4-11, 11-8, 11-9, 5-11, 6-11 to leave India trailing in the best-of-five game semifinal. Paul Drinkhall made it 2-0 for England when he trounced Anthony Arputharaj 11-5 11-8 119 in the second singles. Anthony combined with Harmeet to bring India back in the contest by winning the men's doubles 7-11 16-14, 11-8, 7-11, 13-11. 21-yearold Harmeet then took court for the do-or-die fourth match and looked down and out after losing the first two sets tamely but turned it around by winning the next two to take to deciding fifth set.

LASGOW: 'Pistol King' Jitu Rai kept his reputation intact by clinching the gold medal while the seasoned Gagan Narang and Gurpal Singh claimed a silver each as shooters continued their heroics to add three more medals to India's kitty on the fifth day of competitions in the 20th Commonwealth Games here today. The 26-year-old Rai, world number 4 in the event, gave ample display of his class by taking the honour in the men's 50 m pistol event as the Indian shooters continued to dominate the ranges. Gurpal Singh also took the spotlight with his silver-winning effort in the same event while Narang, taking part for the first time in the 50 m rifle prone event, had to be content with a silver as the shooters did the bulk of the medal shopping during the day. With the addition of three more medals, India's overall medal haul swelled to 25 with seven gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals and were currently placed fourth in the medal standings. Australia were at the top with 27 gold, 21 silver and 27 bronze medals, followed by England (24

Narang collected 203.6 in the 20shot final round, while gold-winner Potent scored 204.3. Kenneth Parr of England bagged the bronze.

Debutant lifter Sivalingam wins gold as Ravi fetches silver By Philem Dipak Singh

G

LASGOW: Indian weightlifter Satish Sivalingam scripted history in just his debut Commonwealth Games, breaking the Games record en route to a gold medal, while compatriot Ravi Katulu took the silver in the men's 77kg event here. The 22-year-old Satish, the 2013 Commonwealth Championships gold medallist, lifted a total of 328kg (149+179) to pip the 2010 CWG gold medallist Ravi, who had to be content with a silver medal following an effort of 317kg (142+175). Australia's Francois Etoundi bagged the bronze with a lift of 314kg (137+177) at the Clyde Auditorium here. Satish's 149kg lift in Sntch lift erased the earlier record of 148kg in the name of of Yuko Peter of Nauru while winning gold in 2010 Delhi. India ran away with the day's honours in weightlifting as Punam Yadav had won a bronze in women's 63kg earlier in the day with a total lift of 202kg (88+114). India have now bettered their 2010 CWG performance in weightlifting. India have won nine medals (3-2-4) in weightlifting, one

more than the eight (2-2-4) in Delhi. Both Ravi and Satish performed tactically and began their snatch after most of the other competitors had made their three attempts by keeping the starting weight at 142kg. Satish was the first of the two Indians to come out and he easily lifted 142kg but Ravi Kumar failed to do so at the same weight. Ravi, howSATISH SIVALINGAM, ever, had a clean lift of 142kg in his Gold Medallist, Weightlifting second attempt.

It (winning the gold) is life's turning point. I have realised my dream of becoming a Commonwealth gold medal. It was four years of hard work and expectation. My parents were telling people of my village in Vellore district that I will win a gold medal at the Games. I have fulfilled their dreams. I am from a poor family and my father was in the army in a small post. He wanted me to win a medal in a big international event.

England's Jack Oliver then set the tempo for a keen contest as he lifted 142kg in his second attempt but failed to clear 145kg in his third. Satish made another clean lift of 146kg before Ravi made an unsuccessful attempt to go ahead by trying 147kg. With one lift left for him, Satish went for 149kg in his attempt to break the Commonwealth Games record and he did it yet again in style and punched in the air in delight.

England's Ian Bell hits a shot as India's captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni watches during the second day of the third cricket test match of the series between England and India at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton, England on Monday.

ing hitting as he struck nine fours and three sixes. Buttler was lucky to when there was no conclusive evidence of Ajinkya Rahane taking a clean catch in the slips off Bhuvneshwar's bowling. Two of the three sixes hit by Buttler were flat-batted ones hit in an over from Pankaj Singh (0/146 in 37 overs). Once Buttler was bowled by Jadeja, Cook called back the batsmen. Jadeja sent down a marathon 45.4 overs taking two for 153 in the process. It was surprising to see that the Indian skipper not giving a lengthy spell to any of his three medium-pacers after lunch, instead opting to give them one over at a time. Mohammad Shami (1/123), Pankaj and Bhuvneshwar were rotated in this manner throughout the first hour of play. This bowling merrygo-round resulted in the wicket of Joe Azad Shrivastav | ADC

OUTHAMPTON: Ian Bell rediscovered his form with sparkling 167 as England piled up a mammoth first innings total of 569/7 to take control of the third cricket Test against India here. After Alastair Cook, it was Bell's turn to roar back to form with a blazing knock while debutant Jos Buttler upped the ante with a dazzling 83ball-85 before England skipper decided to declare. At stumps, India were 25 for one in 14 overs as their first target will be to reach the magic figure of 370 thereby saving the follow-on. Murali Vijay (11 batting) and Cheteshwar Pujara (4 batting) were at the crease. Shikhar Dhawan's (6) English Summer turned from bad to worse as he edged one from James Anderson to Cook at slip. The day belonged to

senior pro Bell, who hit his 21st Test century and also crossed the 7000 run mark en route his century. He completed the landmark with a majestic straight six off Ravindra Jadeja to complete the landmark. His partnership with another centurion Gary Ballance (156) yielded 142 runs before the left-hander was adjudged caught behind off Rohit Sharma, which later looked to be a dubious decision. Ballance, struck 24 boundaries in 288 balls in an innings, that spanned over six hours and 15 minutes. Joe Root and Moeen Ali were dismissed cheaply in the post lunch session by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was by far the most impressive Indian bowler with figures of 3/101 from 37 overs. However it was young Buttler replacing Prior, who stole the show in the last session with some breathtak-

Kabaddi players from U Mumbai (red and black) and Telugu Titans in action during the match of Pro-Kabaddi league at the NSCI in Worli on Sunday. The match ended in a draw with both teams on 35 points each.

India trail by a whopping 544 runs as visiting bowlers bear the brunt for sloppy misses; Bell scores comeback ton, Butler impressive on debut Root (3), out in the 128th off Kumar, and perhaps put a check on the scoring as well with only 30 runs coming off the 13 overs bowled. Even after the drinks break, this ploy from Dhoni continued but he also deployed Ravindra Jadeja (1101) from the other end. But Bell who had enough of this negative tactic and he charged down the wicket in the 135th over of the innings and deposited Jadeja straight down the ground for his second six, bringing up his hundred off 179 balls, with 12 fours included. The 400-run mark had come up in the same over as Jadeja was taken for 21 runs. Brief Scores: England 1st Innings: 569/7 in 163.4 overs (Ian Bell 167, Gary Ballance 156, Alastair Cook 95, Jos Buttler 85, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/101) lead India 1st Innings: 25/1 in 14 overs (M Vijay 11 batting, C Pujara 4 batting) by 544 runs.

Ishant to undergo more tests on sore leg: Joe Dawes

S

OUTHAMPTON: Ruled out of the ongoing third Test due to a sore leg, pacer Ishant Sharma's leg injury has left the team's bowling coach Joe Dawes quite apprehensive and he said the star performer will have to be monitored carefully in the coming days. Tall fast bowler Pankaj Singh replaced Ishant in the Indian squad for the ongoing third Test against England. "Ishant has a sore leg. We need to do a few more tests but we have 11 days before for the next Test, so we will watch him carefully," Dawes said after the opening day's play yesterday. Asked at what juncture the team decided to leave him out, he said, "Pankaj was named in the first 12 yesterday. Ishant had a bowl in the morning before toss but he felt sore and then around 10.20 am (about ten minutes before toss) it was decided."

GLASGOW: With two easy victories under their belt, a confident India will face their first real test in the men's hockey event when they take on world champions and title holders Australia in the next group match at the 20th Commonwealth Games here today. Ninth ranked India started their campaign in the ongoing Games on a positive note, beating world no. 31 Wales 3-1 before spanking 25th ranked Scotland 6-2 in their opening two Group A matches. But for the first time the Sardar Singh-led side would be tested in the competition as, in Australia a formidable and ruthless opponent awaits them tomorrow. Going by rankings and present form, the Kookaburras are way ahead of India at the world stage. In the last head to head meeting at this year's World Cup, the Indians were spanked 0-4 by Australia, who went on to win the title beating Netherlands 6-2 in the final. Come today, the Indians would need a magical effort and some divine intervention if they want to upstage the Kookaburras, unarguably the best team in world at the moment. The match would also provide India a chance to avenge their 08 drubbing at the hands of Australia in the final of the last edition of Games in New Delhi. But it is easier said than done as Australia completely belong to a different league as compared to the Indians, who boast of rich history in the sport, having won eight Olympic golds in the past.

GRAPPLERS LOOK TO WIN BAGFUL OF MEDALS Spearheaded by Olympic medallists Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt, Indian wrestlers will once again look to dominate, but the scrapping of GrecoRoman category will certainly affect the country's medal count when the grapplers start their campaign at the Commonwealth Games, here today. During the 2010 edition of the Games at New Delhi, the GrecoRoman wrestlers grabbed seven (four gold, one silver and two bronze) out of 19 medals won by India. Even this time, the freestyle contingent looks very strong and is expected to add at least 10 medals to India's overall tally. The last two years have seen Indian wrestling scaling new heights with Sushil's second Olympic medal after Beijing, a historic silver at the London Olympics in 2012 and Yogeshwar's bronze at the same event. The two will lead India's campaign in new weight categories, after world body FILA dropped their respective categories in December last year, while tweaking 19 other divisions.
