fter the arrest of dreaded underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's brother Iqbal Kaskar, the city police have arrested a henchman of the don in connection with an extortion case in which a Juhu-based builder was threatened to shell out Rs.3 crore in November last year. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Dhananjay Kulkarni, Tariq Abdul Parveen (48), who was in a Uttar Pradesh's jail in connection with a 1999 criminal case, was brought to Mumbai on a production warrant. After being brought here from Uttar Pradesh, Parveen was placed under arrest in the extortion case registered here in November last year. He will be produced before the court on Tuesday, the officer added. The alleged accused Parveen had been earlier arrested from Nagpada by the Lucknow AntiTerrorism Squad on January 19 in connection with a criminal case registered with them. Since then he was lodged in a UP jail. In November last year, Dawood's close aide Chhota Shakeel had personally made extortion calls to the city-based builder demanding Rs.3 crore. Police did not

reveal the name of the builder for security reasons. While probing the case, the crime branch arrested Shakeel's close aide Ramnarayan Singh alias Bachi Singh along with five others for their alleged role in the crime. During the investigation, Tariq's name also surfaced following which he too was arrested. In the last one week, it is the second arrest made by city police in extortion cases including his brother Iqbal Kaskar who was arrested on February 3 in connection with an extortion case registered with J.J. Marg police station. Kaskar was arrested after a complaint filed by real estate agent Mohammed Salim Sheikh alleging that Kaskar and his men had thrashed him and demanded Rs 3 lakh. Kaskar and two others were booked under sections 385 (extortion), 323 (causing hurt) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal code. Kaskar was deported to India from the United Arab Emirates in 2003 as he was wanted in a murder case and the Sara Sahara illegal construction case. However, he was acquitted in both the cases in 2007. On Monday he was produced before the court for further remand, but he was granted bail on the surety of Rs.50,000.

enceforth the front passenger seat in the black and yellow share taxis will be reserved for women. The motive of the act is to ensure that women sit comfortably and are not cramped around male passengers in the back seat. The Regional Transport office (RTO) rules state that only four passengers can sit in the taxi, three in the rear seat and one next to the driver. However, share taxis many times fill in four to five people in the back seat. Anita Singh, a regular passenger,

who takes a share taxi daily from CST to Bombay High Court, said, “I generally prefer the front seat as I don't have to be stuck sitting between male passengers. However, I don't know how far this will work as the cab driver just stuffs the passengers and do not care about the passengers. But still I would be happy if the rule is implemented properly.” Sources in the Transport Department reveal that the State Transport Minister Diwakar Raote plans to introduce at least 20 new share taxi routes after 7,800 new taxis start plying on Mumbai roads.

"GPS trackers would help locate the vehicles," state Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said yesterday. He announced this while speaking to reporters at a taxi stand outside Vidhan Bhavan after launching a scheme to re-

serve front seat of shared taxi cabs for women. Raote said with this scheme, women would not feel discomfort while occupying seats with unknown men at the back seat. Also, he said, his department was planning to launch a helpline for passengers to lodge complaints against taxis and autorickshaws which refuses to ply passengers.

Valentine gifts and decorations at a shop in Churchgate.

Let there be love

On Valentine Day on Saturday, a collective expression of love is set to take place. On Valentine Day, a large number of people celebrate. They exchange gifts and greetings. (The innocent day however can be marred by those who have no love in their hearts. There are some who are opposed to celebration of Valentine Day. They say it is not part of our culture and hence we should not celebrate.) Our life in the world is full of trouble and when we get some sunshine we should rejoice. Whatever is good anywhere in the world we must accept. For instance, Yoga from India has been accepted by the whole world. Anything that promotes love, health and well-being must be freely accepted. At least on some special days, let there be love.

Breastfeeding prepares baby for solid food

Babies get microbes from breast milk that makes them 'more ready' for solid food, a new study has found. Researchers from University of North Carolina found that a baby's diet during the first few months of life has a profound influence on the composition,

diversity, and stability of the gut microbiome. These factors, in turn, influence the baby's ability to transition from milk to solid foods and may have long-term health effects. "We found that babies who are fed only breast milk have microbial communities that seem more ready for the introduction of solid foods," said Andrea Azcarate-Peril, assistant professor in the department of cell biology and physiology and the study's senior author. "The transition to solids is much more dramatic for the microbiomes of babies that are not exclusively breastfed. We think the microbiomes of non-exclusively breastfed babies could contribute to more stomach aches and colic," she said. The discovery adds to the growing awareness that the gut microbiome plays a major role in helping us digest food and fight pathogens, among other functions. For the study, the research team collected stool samples and information about the diets and health of nine babies as they grew from ages 2 weeks to 14 months. Applying genomic sequencing techniques to the stool samples, the scientists deduced the types and functions of the bacteria in the babies' gut microbiomes. The analysis found that during the first few months of life there

were clear differences between the microbiomes of babies that were exclusively breastfed as compared to those fed both formula and breast milk.

Nanowafers may replace eyedrops

TINY drug-containing polymer nanowafers that are applied to the eye like a contact lens can eliminate the need for medicinal eyedrops, according to scientists, including one of Indian origin. The nanowafers in the eye would proceed to gradually dissolve, releasing medication throughout the day, researchers said. Eyedrops do not always go right into the eye, and the liquid medication is often quickly expelled by blinking, or washed away by tears. A team of scientists from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, led by Dr Ghanashyam Acharya developed the nanowafer. It's clear and disc-shaped like a contact lens, but is only about onetenth the size. The pharmaceutical payload is contained within an array of nanoreservoirs embedded throughout the non-toxic polymer, 'Gizmag' reported. Users would apply it to the surface of their eye just once a day, then leave it to dissolve on its own - repeated blinking would not displace it.

Hema Malini’s Bengali songs Hema Malini, India’s longadmired dream girl and Babul Supriyo, a talented musician of the new generation, who is also the Hon’ble Minister of State for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, are recording a Bengali album of three priceless songs for Saregama India. More than four decades ago, way back in 1973, Hema Malini, then the nation’s dream girl was inspired by the legendary Kishore Kumar to lend her voice in Bengali. That was how two great Bengali songs written by Mukul Dutta and put to tune by no less a person than Kishore Kumar was successfully recorded and formed an important part of the 1973 Puja album of Gramophone Co, as Saregama was known in those days. That was a memorable cross cultural event in the history of Indian music and the two songs have withstood the test of time to become an inseparable part of popular Indian music. “After a gap of more than four decades, Babul Supriyo has taken the initiative to bring back the two songs after being

Hema Malini

recreated with contemporary musical arrangement. To this to be added is a fresh duet song (Hema-Babul) with lyrics by Srijato and composition by Indradip Dasgupta. Saregama has in its archive 2,297 of Kishore Kumar’s songs, out of which 2,142 are in Hindi and 155 in Bengali.” Kishore Kumar’s first Bengali film song (Samar) was released by Saregama in 1950, which is still alive in the heart of music-lovers. The song Sundari-Lo-Sundari was sung with Geeta Dutt. Along with millions of music-lovers across the country, Saregama is proud of its association with Babul Supriyo who has created for Saregama nearly 55 songs.

umbai Bharatiya Janata Party unit president Ashish Shelar yesterday categorically denied having any link with the person by the name of Jeetu Raut as his personal assistant. His denial came after reports appeared in a section of the media that one of his PAs had threatened a police officer not to register a First Information Report (FIR) against goons of underworld don Chhota Rajan. He said that Raut was a ordinary party worker and that no call was made to the police in this connection. Shelar stated that since the police have lodged a complaint and that since the matter is under investigation there is no question of his trying to interfere in the case. He added that he has always raised the issue of underworld crime in Mumbai in the state legislature. It may be recalled that on February 4, Bhandup police registered FIR against two alleged accused Nilesh Paradakar and Jaffrey under sections 504, 507, 506 (2) and 34 of IPC on the basis of a complaint of former Nationalist Congress Party

n a blunt message to his own party's government in Gujarat, Minister for Revenue Eknath Khadse has asked the Gujarat government not to allow cattle entry into Maharashtra borders this summer season in search of fodder. Speaking to newspersons here at his Mantralaya office he said that this year the drought situation in most parts of the state has forced the state government to ensure that fodder is reserved for cattle here. The Minister disclosed that every year between February to May, herds of cattle from Kathiyawad in neighbouring Gujarat head towards border regions of Maharashtra in search of fodder. This year the drought is severe in Marathwada and parts of Vidarbha region. Khadse stated that the government has already issued orders to reserve fodder for local cattle. He added that last year 18,000 villages were affected by drought and water scarcity whereas this year the number of villages has gone up to 24,000 villages. Khadse disclosed that

the government has given the powers of requisition and deployment of water tankers in villages facing scarcity. Earlier, replying to queries over reports appearing in a section of the media of names of two Congress leaders from Maharashtra figuring in the list of people having accounts in HSBC Bank, Khadse remarked that so far many such unauthenticated lists have come up. He added that as of now the government has no role in the issue. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has rubbished reports appearing in a section of the press that he (Fadnavis) and Khadse were not even on talking terms with each other.

On the very next day a corrigendum was printed. The paper has been closed since January 19. The petitioner's life is in danger. FIRs have been filed all across the country. There are five or six FIRs, 2 FIRs in Thane, 2 in Mumbai, one in Malegaon and one in Parbhani. Messages have been pasted on the petitioner's door but she cannot go home for the fear of being lynched. The petitioner has already been arrested once. Why take coercive steps for the same offence.” The Mumbai Police has argued against bail for Dalvi,

but was overruled recently by the court. Talking about the filing of FIRs at different places, the state government stated, “Filing an FIR is every citizen's right. We can't stop anybody from filing a FIR.” The govt pleader requested to transfer all the cases to a single police station. He said, “As far as coercive steps are concerned I have to make submissions. Also, ultimately the petitioner knew what happened in France after the cartoon was published. And the same cartoon was printed here. It was intentional.” The matter will be heard on Wednesday.

ith the inauguration of their party offices here, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) officially jumped into the political arena of Mira Bhayandar. MIM-MLA, Akbaruddin Owaisi, inaugurated local party offices in the Muslim dominated -- Naya Nagar area of Mira Road in the presence of MIM state chiefSyed Momin and their Byculla legislator Adv. Waris

Pathan. However Owaisi limited himself to inaugurating the party office and avoided speaking to the media. The initiatives of MIM to seek a foothold in handpicked areas across the state has already alerted political outfits as the move – if it goes ahead as planned – may cause a substantial shift in Muslim voters away from the so-called ‘secular’ parties. The Mira Road region is considered a Congress bastion.

After the BMC and the HC declared the hostel building as dilapidated and dangerous, the students were asked to vacate the building for demolition. In April 2014, BMC had issued evacuation notice to the Siddharth Vihar hostel at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College located in Wadala. Ponder awhile… “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi

HE exit polls in Delhi do not seem to have scared the BJP. Men behind these polls have been screaming for the past few days that the BJP does not have a ghost of a chance and that the AAP is all set to win by a street. The AAP has also held celebrations. In all probability it will win, but it is not 100 per cent certain. That’s what the BJP leaders say now. To form the government the number required is 36. There are 70 seats. The BJP now says an internal study which it has made shows it will win 34 seats. And if the Congress wins just two seats, the AAP cannot form the government. In the last Delhi assembly elections, the AAP and the BJP had done well. Both, however, did not have the magic number to form the government. Finally, the AAP came to power when the Congress party extended support to it. The question of the Congress supporting either the BJP or the AAP does not arise now. The Congress has said it will not go to the rescue of either the BJP or the AAP. It is perhaps this situation that makes Kiran Bedi — BJP’s chief ministerial candidate — to declare all is not lost and the BJP too has a chance of making it. She also has said that if the BJP and the AAP failed to get the required number President’s rule will continue in Delhi. What is to be noted is that the Aam Aadmi Party has made a mark in Delhi. The party is still regarded as clean. It seems to have attracted the youth. People of Delhi have started having the same perceptions about the BJP which they had about the Congress: There is nothing to choose between the two parties.

HE only good thing Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did in her repressive rule during the Emergency was to include the words, secularism and socialism, in the preamble of the Constitution. Morarji Desai who succeeded her had all the changes she made in the Constitution deleted, but retained the amendment to the preamble. The Jana Sangh, the earlier image of the BJP that had merged with the Janata Party, raised no objection. Both L.K. Advani and Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Jana Sangh stalwarts who had joined the Janata, were among the enthusiastic leaders to retain the words of secularism and socialism in the preamble. It has been apparent that the omission of the two words from an advertisement issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting should not be construed as the ‘real’ intention of the government. The ministry has admitted its mistake. The matter should have ended there and then. But the situation has kept the controversy alive by BJP chief Amit Shah. He has said at a press conference that the old preamble is the real one. However, the Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley has stated that what held the field was the new version of the preamble which omits the mention of socialism and secularism.

Confusion confounded The confusion has been confounded by Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who stated that the omission of words, secularism and socialism, gives an opportunity to debate the matter all over again. It is a pity that the Law Minister should say so without realizing the sanctity of the Constitution. That a liberal person like him should say it is all the more reprehensible. The matter was debated fully when the two words were included. The only inference one can draw from this episode is that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which guides the party, wants the words “secularism and socialism” dropped. For them, at least the word ‘secularism’ is an anathema. Because of the countrywide furore the BJP has not pursued the matter. Maybe, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who stayed silent in public, advised the party that the country was not yet ready to jettison secularism and socialism. The RSS probably considered it a reverse, not a defeat and will come back to this agenda when the

climate is favourable. True, the lessening support of the Congress, which is ideologically secular, has adversely affected secularism. But the party and the ideology are not synonymous. In fact, secularism has suffered because the Congress deviated from it in action. In its race to grab power, the party pushed ideals into the background. Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s commitment to the ideology has never been in doubt, nor was that of her son Rahul Gandhi’s. But there are many state leaders who do not hesitate to take a parochial line for the sake of votes. She is reportedly unhappy but is afraid of taking action against them because their exit from the Congress may hit the party in a way which may be fatal. The Congress is in the midst of gathering

VERY intelligent person comes to a stage in his life sooner or later when he begins to question himself as to what purpose there is in life, in being on earth. 'Why am I here? What am I to accomplish in life?' he asks. No doubt the moment this question has arisen in a person he has taken his first step in the path of wisdom. Before, whatever he did, not being conscious of his life's purpose, he remained discontented. Whatever be his occupation, his condition in life, whether he is wise or foolish, learned or illiterate, there is always discontent. He may have success or failure, but the desire that his life's purpose should be accomplished remains, and unless it is accomplished a person cannot be satisfied. After knowing the purpose of life we may be handicapped by many things, we may lack means, but the conditions will be favorable to go forward, in spite of all. When someone has found his life's purpose, no matter how difficult life is for him nor how many hindrances he has to contend with, from that moment there is nothing he will not withstand, no sacrifice he will not make, nothing he will not endure. He will wait with patience all his life,

Welfare is not dependent on socialism, but egalitarianism is. If the industry and business expand, at least the wealth will increase. But the nexus between politicians and the bureaucracy does not allow rapid progress. Red tape apart, corruption at every step saps the energy which can be infused for the society to go ahead. Communalism is the real problem. The nation’s strong reaction has stopped the ‘ghar wapsi’ movement. Christians are still the target. But their number is limited and does not count much in electoral politics. Otherwise, the BJP government would not have dared to declare even the festival of Christmas into a Good Governance Day! MATTER & SPIRIT

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2015

IF Delhi turns out to have brought the rampaging Modi Juggernaut to a grinding halt in the assembly elections whose results are going to be announced on Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be tempted to delay holding fresh elections to the Bihar assembly as long as possible, and even to try and cobble together a coalition of defectors and party splitters to form a makeshift government in the interim. The temptation should be resisted in the larger interest of democracy and of the state of Bihar. The most sensible course of action in the state, in the wake of Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi recommending dissolution of the state legislature, is to hold fresh elections. The political context has changed considerably from what had prevailed when the people of Bihar elected the present set of legislators. Let the people, rather than political manipulations, decide who will be the next chief minister. The Janata Parivar is hugely mistaken if it believes that asserting its right to replace Manjhi with Nitish Kumar will win the people of Bihar over.

BJP must not delay polls in Bihar fail to protect women from anti social elements and spend money for purposes other than improving infrastructure, industry and modern technology-oriented agriculture in the guise of development. It was a lesson for the ruling party at the Centre to play a better role in awakening the country from better man management.

THIS refers to your edit-piece 'A chance for BJP' (ADC, Feb 7). After 15 years in the Opposition, it was indeed a golden chance for the BJP to bounce back in Delhi, but it looks as though the party has sqaundered it by committing mistakes without a clear understanding of the pulse of the people with the result that the so-called Aam Aadmi Party (sans the 'common man') appears to have made amends for deserting Delhi last year and made up with the electorate by offering apologies and dishing out all sorts of promises. It would have been better if the party had fielded the veteran, V.K. Malhotra, as its CM candidate instead of a political novice, the former police officer who had just joined the party. Instead of appealing to legalise prostitution, women must fight to establish themselves in society and demand dignity, security and justice. I totally oppose the recommendation raised for the legalisation of prostitution in India. It is completely against the sacred tradition of our country where numerous festivals are celebrated in honour of different gods and goddesses. If a woman in the form of a deity can be venerated, worshipped and carried in a gorgeous procession, why shouldn’t one give the same respect and honour when the same woman comes in real form? This

has always been a contradiction and people continue to behave in the same manner. Here is the need for women to become stronger in their effort to re-establish their position in the male dominated society rather than bowing their heads to a degrading condition. From preventing heart disease and slowing down the onset of cancer, to protecting your skin from damage, carrots contain properties that provide numerous health benefits. Take a look at a few.

A ten-year-long study, which was conducted in the Netherlands, divided vegetables according to their colours in order to examine their impact on cardiovascular health. The study found that foods that are orange/yellow, especially those that are deep orange or yellow, offer the highest protection against heart disease as compared to green, red/purple and white food. Even within the dark orange/yellow category, the study highlighted carrots for their exceptional ability to lower your risk of suffering from cardiovascular diseases. The reason for these benefits is believed to be the unique combination of antioxidants in carrots, which come together as a group to benefit your heart in a way that each of these antioxidants cannot do on their own. Other studies have shown that carrots also have

anti-inflammatory properties, which is another reason that this vegetable is so good for your heart.

Studies have shown that carotenoids, a compound that carrots are rich in, contain anti-cancer as their antioxidant content helps to reduce free radicals. A developing theory suggests that their falcarinol, a natural pesticide, is another compound that can help prevent cancer. Research has focused on the positive effects of carrots in connection to colon cancer. The discovery of falcarinol has boosted research in this area, as tests have shown that when falcarinol is combined with the antioxidant and fibre content of carrots, it inhibits the growth of colon cancer.

INNOVATIVE BREAKTHROUGH

Carrots have a high level of beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant that was actually named after carrots! Betacarotene prevents cell damage and a regular consumption of

ataracts refers to the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The vision drops, reading and driving become progressively more difficult as does threading a needle. The colours not as brilliant and intense as before and the overall vision seems a bit misty. In Modern cataract surgery, natural lens which has become cloudy is replaced by a plastic /silicone/ Collamer lens (IOL).

According to Padmashree, Prof Dr. Keiki R. Mehta, Surgical Chief & Medical Director, in Bladeless surgery, or Bladeless assisted surgery, procedures through small laser made incisions using the Catalys system. The Blade-Free, Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery with the “Catalys allows to perform many complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than standard surgical techniques. The

procedures are operated from a remote console a few feet from the surgical table. The surgical area is visible in a 3D magnified view on a monitor, which offers greater depth perception and detailed views than does open surgery. From the remote console, the surgeon precisely directs the laser into the eye at the operating table. The Surgeons have more flexibility, control and manoeuvra-

bility using the surgical instruments in surgery than in traditional minimally invasive surgery. Using the bladefree, femtosecond cataract surgery system, the cataract surgery can be performed delicately and complex procedures with virtual total safety and with high efficiency, literally in seconds. In highly advanced surgery, the reduced trauma leads to a quicker recovery compared with open surgery.

>> Eating a carrot helps fight cancer, slows ageing and promotes oral health The Catalys cataract surgery system is bladeless as it can make all the cuts openings in perfect shape, size and position using the femtosecond laser. The laser cuts just like an invisible sword on the micrometer. The opening of the capsule is done with micro millimeter perfection giving a perfectly centered and round safe rhexis, then it evaporates the cataract using the advanced laser pattern scanning technology. Blade-Free Femtosecond Cataract surgery, using the Catalys Precision Laser System is so simple that the patient walks off the table and since the laser opening are self sealing, can join the office the next day, have a bath or even travel with complete safety. Several Advantages and benefits of cataract surgery with the Latest Blade-Free, Femtosecond Laser Surgery utilizing the “Catalys over regular phacoemulsification surgery include Precise and safe treatment, individually tailored to your needs treatment plan based on a 3D image of your eye, Gentle and easy removal of the clouded lens & Faster recovery rate due to lower inflammation. Continued from pg 13 « carrots will help reverse the natural damage that your cells suffer from because of the effects of metabolism and so, can help them live for longer.

thought about how healthy these snacks are? As we mentioned before, carrots are one of the healthiest vegetables, so make sure that you’re making the most out of them, by referring this list. Saima Shaikh, nutritionist at Anytime Fitness, rates a few popular carrot-based snacks out of 5, with 5 being the healthiest.

Healthier, younger skin

carrot halwa 3/5

The anti-ageing benefits of carrots aren’t limited to your cells. The vitamin A and antioxidant content of carrots means that they will protect your skin from sun damage. The vitamin A content also helps to prevent premature wrinkling, keeps acne at bay, reduces pigmentation and evens out your skin tone.

Carrot halwa may be an appealing dessert, but its sugar and milk content makes it a little unhealthy. Saima explains, “To make this dish healthier, prepare it in a pan so that the carrots release all their natural sugar content, and use jaggery instead of sugar.”

Oral health

We’re sure that every time you think of carrot cupcakes, your mouth starts watering, but then your guilty conscience kicks in. However, Saima tells us that it is okay to indulge in them once in a while. But, she does add, “Cupcakes do contain white flour, so if you want to make them even healthier, use oats to prepare this sweet treat.”

If you have a strong memory, you will remember salivating more than usual when you eat a carrot. This is because carrots are known for their ability to stimulate saliva production, which helps to fight cavity-forming bacteria. They are also rich in several minerals that benefit your oral health and what’s more is that their crunchy texture helps to remove plaque and food particles from your teeth.

However, you can also use carrots in your beauty routine, as they help to hydrate your skin, even out skin tone and add a healthy glow. We tell you about a few ways to incorporate it in your beauty regime: n This simple carrot face mask will even out your skin tone while adding a healthy glow to your face. Boil two carrots and mash them once they cool down. Mix the carrot mash with 1 tsp of lime juice and 2 tbsp of honey. If you have oily skin, add a few drops of olive oil and mix it till the it has a smooth consistency. Apply this over your face and let it sit for around 30 minutes, then wash it off with lukewarm water. n You can combine the benefits of carrots and potatoes by using this face mask — mix 1 mashed carrot together with 1 mashed potato. Add a tbsp of ground oatmeal to the mash, mix well and apply it on to your face. Wash it off after 30 minutes with lukewarm water. Avoid using this mask if you have oily skin. n For a natural dry skin remedy, grate a carrot into thin slivers and mix it with the scooped out flesh of one avocado. Add garlic cloves if you like the flavour. n Leave it out in the sun for three days, till the carrots are tender and ready to eat.

&

n Did you know that carrots were initially grown for their medicinal purposes and not as food? Before we got around to eating them, carrots were used to cure severe ailments. n Carrots can be dated back to around 5,000 years through historical documents and paintings. But, no one knows exactly when carrots appeared, as people mistook them for parsnips, a root vegetable that looks quite similar to a carrot. n Whenever you picture a carrot in your head, we’re sure that you relate it to the colour orange. However, carrots can also be white, yellow, red or purple. n Bugs Bunny was known to binge on carrots — we’re sure you know that. But, did you know that the artist who lent his voice to this cartoon character, Mel Blanc, wasn’t fond of carrots at all?! n If you love carrot juice, you will be glad to know that it can be used for several things apart from just drinking. Ed Ruscha, a master printer and artist, uses carrot juice instead of printer ink. carrots are the healthiest snack from all our options. Munch on these without batting an eye.

HealtHy snacKs to beat sugar cravings Are you addicted to sugar or crave for a particular dessert throughout the day? Yamini Walia suggests you pick these healthy snacks to fight your sugar cravings FrEsh Fruits

Before you make a face — yes, we know that fresh fruits aren’t as satisfying as calorie-laden dessert. But, if you often have intense sugar cravings, fresh fruit is a healthier way to take the edge off. Eating a fruit will satisfy your cravings without having to indulge in something unhealthy.

MarshMallows

We usually eat marshmallows by toasting them over a flame. But, you don’t even need to do that because the soft mousse-like texture of marshmallows tastes delicious when eaten plain as well. Since they only contain sugar and are less fatty than other sweets, you can bite into as many as eight marshmallows, without feeling guilty.

Yoghurt trEats

complete

defence

Yoghurt should be your go-to-option when you’re craving for sugar. It will satisfy your cravings and also give you a health boost. The next time you’re dying to eat your favourite chocolate ice-cream, pick a yoghurt-based dessert instead.

ChoColatE

Yes, you read that right! Chocolate isn’t that unhealthy, as long as you don’t go overboard. A few bites of chocolate will satisfy your sugar cravings in a healthy manner. So, sit down, close your eyes and savour each bite — slowly.

sEsaME bars

Sesame bars will satisfy your craving for something crunchy and crispy as well as something that is sweet. These bars take a while to chew your way through, so they’re quite satisfying. They will also give your jaws a good workout.

If your immune system is at the top of its game, it will go a long way in making sure that you are disease-free — and this includes protection from more than the occasional cough. Dev Goswami brings you an in-depth dietary guide to help boost your immunity

W

hen it comes to fighting infections and diseases, your immune system plays a vital role as it ensures that factors such as a change in weather or diet, occasional street food binges and the unintentional consumption of spoilt meat won’t leave you bedridden. Apart from getting enough exercise and consuming immunity-boosting foods, there are several other factors that play an important role in keeping your immune system healthy. Nutritionist Karishma Chawla tells us that every part of your body, especially your nervous system and your mental attitude, must be in optimal health if you want to achieve strong immune response. So, we asked her about the various nutrients — as well as their sources — that will help boost your immunity. But, before we take a look at the food that indirectly affects your immune system, let’s briefly talk about the food that has a direct impact on your immune response.

boost Your iMMunitY Karishma explains that eating food that contains carotenoids, zinc and vitamins A, C and E, is a great way to improve your

body’s immune response. For vitamin A and carotenoids, you should pick ingredients such as pumpkin, spinach, tomatoes, eggs, sweet potatoes, mangoes and dairy products, while green leafy vegetables, broccoli, parsley, potatoes, lemon, bell peppers and strawberries are all good sources of vitamin C. Vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, avocadoes and apples should also be part of your diet as they are good sources of vitamin E, while sesame seeds, poultry, cashews, yogurt and mushrooms contain zinc, which is a nutrient that not only boosts your immunity, but also helps to combat depression.

indirECt FaCtors As we mentioned earlier, your mental state as well as your nervous system has an impact on your immune system. So, Karishma explains that it is important to include the following nutrients in your diet: n Calcium: Constant mood swings can negatively impact your body’s immune system and calcium can help to control PMS-related mood changes. Include food sources such as beans, broccoli,

>> Since marshmallows don’t contain fat, they are a satisfy your sugar cravings

turnips and dairy foods for substantial calcium intake. n Folate: Folate is an important nutrient. It controls serotonin, which plays an essential role in transferring messages between your nerve cells. A lack of serotonin can also lead to fatigue, so, eat citrus fruits, whole grains, asparagus and lettuce to provide your body with folate enough. n iron: An adequate intake of iron helps fight fatigue and battle mood swings, both of which can wreck havoc with your immune system. Food such as soy beans, lentils, spinach, pumpkin seeds and tuna are a great source of iron. n Essential fatty acids: To maintain a healthy immune system, consuming essential fatty acids is a must. They regulate your mood, play an important role in keeping your brain healthy and strengthen your immune system. Apart from fish such as salmon and tuna, which are extremely rich in essential fatty acids, you can pick ingredients such as avocados, olive oil, walnuts and flaxseed.

ExpErt spEak “Fresh fruit offers enough natural sugar to satisfy sugar cravings and it is definitely the healthiest choice as it is full of nutrients and fibre. Smoothies are healthy as well, since their main ingredient is yoghurt. You can have it for breakfast, as a snack, or as a dessert. You can add protein powder to your smoothie or infuse it with a fresh fruit such as strawberry or mango, which is a naturally sweet fruit, in order to avoid added sugar. If ice cream is your weakness, then try frozen yoghurt. This healthy substitute will certainly satisfy your sweet cravings.” — Saima Sheikh, nutritionist at Anytime Fitness Gym

Choose wisely Motion sickness also depends on your choice of seat, especially when it comes to airplanes or ships. The seats in the middle of an airplane are calmest and similarly, lower level cabins close to the centre of a ship experience less movement than higher or outer cabins. So, make sure that you request these seats while booking your tickets if you’re prone to suffering from motion sickness.

Eat ginger Ginger is an effective remedy for dealing with motion sickness. The spicy root aids digestion and helps to suppress nausea. So, either consume it in the form of ginger candy or simply suck on a piece of raw ginger. Remember that ginger can thin your blood, so consult your doctor if you’re on blood pressure medication.

Gaze at one point Since your eyes and ears need to be in sync with each other to avoid motion sickness, it’s a good idea to focus on a fixed point outside your vehicle. Sit in the front seat, so that it is easier for you to focus on a stationary object ahead of you.

ease motion

sickness Whether it’s caused by a bumpy car ride or turbulence during a flight, most of us have experienced motion sickness at some point in our lives — except for a lucky few of course! Yamini Walia tells you how to deal with it

2

Avoid reading For people who love to read, this may be a little disappointing, but it will help you feel at ease. When you’re reading, your inner ear and skin receptors detect that you are moving forward, while your eyes are focused on a stationary object — your book. This confuses your brain, leading to motion sickness.

Protein-rich foods Snacking on protein-rich foods will help combat the effects of motion sickness. Experts suggest that you keep some almonds, pistachios and cashews at hand while travelling. Avoid travelling on an empty stomach, as you are more likely to fall sick. Instead, munch on high protein snacks every few hours. Keep a check Be careful about what food, drinks and alcohol you consume before your journey as well as while travelling. Avoid drinking too much alcohol and eating food that doesn’t suit your body or that makes you feel unusually full. Heavy, spicy and fatty foods will aggravate motion sickness.

5

Right direction You should always sit in the same direction that you’re travelling in. Avoid sitting with your back to the driver, as it can cause a headache and even make you feel nauseous.

2. You experienced a fluctuation in your blood pressure during the initial stages of pregnancy. a. True. b. False. 3. Frequent check-ups with your doctor have confirmed a healthy growth rate for your baby. a. True. b. False.

10

Are you exhausted enough to fall asleep at any point during the day? If you have a consistent sleep schedule and follow an exercise routine, but still feel fatigued throughout the day, Dev Goswami recommends that you answer these questions to find the reason for your weariness

9

No influence When you’re travelling, isolate yourself from people who may be suffering from motion sickness as this can make feel ill too. Even a conversation about motion sickness can make you feel queasy.

M

ost of us assume that exhaustion and stamina go hand-in-hand, so it’s a common misconception that if you follow an exercise routine, you will be full of energy — except after you’ve just left the gym, of course. However, there are several other factors that play a role in determining how exhausted you are. If you’re constantly tired even though you follow a set workout, answer the following questions to find out why. 1. Do you exercise every day of the week? a. Yes! b. Only when I overeat, which happens quite often. c. No. My workout plan spans five days of the week.

Pregnancy can be a turbulent period, so it’s vital to ensure that you and your baby stay healthy through the course of your pregnancy. Sara Shah brings you a quiz that will help you check whether you are 4. While gaining weight during pregnancy is inevitable, you have managed to maintain a healthy weight, which is well within the limits of normal pregnancy weight gain. a. True. b. False. 5. You engage in light exercises such as brisk walking and yoga at least a few times a week. At the same time, you make sure that you don’t overexert yourself and stop at the slightest discomfort. a. True. b. False.

Mostly As Congratulations on a healthy pregnancy. While your answers to our questions indicate that you’re staying healthy, there are several other signs that you can look out for to confirm that both you and your baby are in good shape. If you have witnessed a fluctuation in blood pressure, it’s because of the surplus blood produced by your body. Morning sickness is also a sign of healthy pregnancy as it indicates increased levels of hormones in your body. However, it isn’t true that all women experience morning sickness when they are pregnant. Several women have had healthy pregnancies without experiencing it. And, while you should engage in light exercises, avoid overexerting yourself as that may interfere with the amount of oxygen that your baby receives. Mostly Bs If you have answered all or most of our questions as false, you need to focus more on being healthy. As we mentioned earlier, high blood pressure and morning sickness are normal during pregnancy. But, gaining excess weight (28kgs more than your regular weight) is not normal, and you may have to change a few aspects of your diet and lifestyle. It is vital for a mother-to-be to engage in some light exercise in order to increase endurance. Also, ensure that you go in for regular check-ups with your doctor to detect and solve any possible problems.

Before we tell you what to do in order to avoid feeling exhausted, we need to address the fact that some of you don’t feel as though any of these answers hold true for you. If that is the case, you either took the quiz for fun or you need to visit a doctor, because exhaustion can be a sign of several medical conditions, including anaemia, heart disease, diabetes and hypothyroidism.

REst

This is the most important way to combat exhaustion. Lack of sleep is the most common cause for exhaustion and it’s vital that you get around 7-8 hours of rest every night. Sleep allows your body and your mind to recuperate from the day’s activities — both physical and emotional. If you find it hard to get enough sleep, you should visit a doctor, because you may be suffering from a sleep disorder. Also, practise meditation, which works as a great relaxation technique and will help you to sleep better.

HEAltHy diEt

For those who answered with mostly Bs, remember that a healthy diet is about much more than simply eating healthy

food. You also need to ensure that you don’t overeat and that you eat at least two hours before you go to sleep. The latter is important because it not only keep you healthy, it also allows you to fall asleep easily.

KEEP stREss At BAy

Stress is another important factor that can leave you exhausted — it’s one of the foremost reasons for feeling mentally tired. So, even if you follow a healthy diet and exercise routine, you are likely to feel tired and as though you don’t have the energy to do easy tasks if you’re constantly stressed. Follow stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation and deep breathing.

Avoid BAd HABits

Excessive smoking and drinking are two common habits that lead to exhaustion. While smoking affects your stamina, drinking can will leave you dehydrated, both of which impact your energy levels. Also, remember to avoid caffeine — it may give you temporary boost of energy, but it will dehydrate you and aggravate your exhaustion.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2015 >> Performing standing exercises on the surfboard can be tricky if you lack balance >> The workout is intense, but lots of fun! Doesn’t my big smile say it all?

Surf’S up!

Mumbai has just been introduced to a new surf-inspired workout. Sara Shah tells you about SurfSET Fitness

S

urfSET Fitness is a surf-inspired workout centre that recently set up base in India. And, if you’ve always envied the chiselled physique that surfers sport, SurfSET Fitness is where you should go. To be honest, I have never really surfed, nor have I ever taken a keen interest in this activity. It’s always been the sort of thing that you watch on TV and are amazed by, but don’t actually focus on after a while. The sorry state of the beaches here in Mumbai obviously doesn’t do much to fuel an interest in the sport either. So, when I was making my way to the newly opened SurfSET Fitness, my interest was piqued. Situated in Santacruz, the fitness centre consists of a single room for workouts, along with a washroom and a shower. The main workout room is simply designed, devoid of any over-the-top, unnecessary décor. As soon as you enter, you are faced by a mirrored wall on your left, with the surfboard equipment pointed towards it. It isn’t hard to decipher the equipment. The best way to describe it is that each piece is an actual surfboard (the kind used by surfers) fixed on top of three stability balls. Most of the workout is performed on the surfboard or alongside it. There were at least a dozen in one room.

of stamina. I tried a part of their energetic beginner’s workout. But, I was told that a single session can blast up to a whopping 800 calories in just one hour. And honestly, with the amount of energy the session took, I believe them. It’s an intense core workout, and I experienced a fusion of pilates, plyometrics

and yoga. You may be familiar with some of the moves, as most of the exercises that we performed were quite common, and were simply modified so that they could be performed on a surfboard. I noticed that the workout was a rollercoaster ride! There were exercises that were slow and low in intensity, and then there were those that required a

ThE boTTom LinE Frankly, I am not really a gym rat. However, SurfSET offers an experience that supersedes the monotonous, slow routine of a gym. A gym session usually focuses on a single body part or problem area and it may take a while for you to actually see some visible results. However, a session at SurfSET consists of an intense full-body workout that doesn’t just focus on one area of your body. I won’t say that I noticed any immediate results, but I could definitely feel the familiar muscle soreness that you feel after an effective, invigorating workout. Just so that you can get a good idea about what to expect when you visit SurfSET Fitness — they offer a set of two trial classes for `500. So, if you’re looking for something fresh to add to your workout routine, go ahead and give SurfSET a try. But, don’t expect it to be easy. The origins of SurfSET Fitness SurfSET Fitness is a US-based workout that was curated by former professional hockey player, Mike Hartwick. The idea of a surf-inspired workout came to Mike in an epiphany when he realised that surfing on a regular basis gave him far better results that regular, heavyweight gym workouts.

LET’S gET moving! If you work out regularly, you won’t have difficulty getting started here. Those who are new to the foray of fitness need to remember that SurfSET is not going to be easy! It’s more rigorous than I expected and requires plenty

sudden boost of energy, quite similar to interval training. Within 10 minutes of the workout, you will feel sweat trickling down your face as your trainer motivates you to keep going. The trickiest part is when you have to perform the moves that require you to stand on the board. We performed a set of squats and lunges (among others), and what’s challenging is that as you try to stand on the board, it begins to vibrate. No, this isn’t an added feature in SurfSET’s equipment — it happens because of your own lack of balance. However, the vibrations diminish as you get used to it. Of course, you need to spend a lot more time on the board to actually fine tune your balance.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2015 >> The flu is amongst the most common reasons for asthma flare-ups

Prevent heartbreaK

Okay, we’re not going to give you relationship advice. Instead, Dev Goswami is bringing you a list of habits that prevent your heart from being fighting fit — and with Valentine’s Day around the corner, you’re going to need it!

L

Know your

flu With the constant change in weather, coming down with the flu has become a regular occurrence. However, that’s no reason to take it lightly, says Yamini Walia

F

eeling weak or suffering from a cough, fever, runny nose and sore throat are all common symptoms of the flu. You will usually recover within 57 days, although in some cases, you may continue to feel unusually tired for weeks. However, the flu should not be taken lightly, especially amongst elders or the chronically ill, as it can result in several health complications. Read on to find out more about this health hazard.

PurPle is The deadliesT Colour The most dangerous flu is the Spanish flu, which managed to kill more people than AIDS did over a span of 24 weeks between 1918 and 1920. It is also called the purple flu because it drains oxygen from your lungs and changes your skin tone to purple, black or even blue. So, if you experience the symptoms of this flu, don’t delay treatment!

weakening. So, catching even a minor form of the flu can be fatal. This is because senior citizens usually suffer from conditions such as diabetes and heart diseases, which, when combined with the flu, can lead to dangerous consequences.

ove is in the air, and we’re at our corniest best! While we won’t go so far as to wax eloquent about love, we are definitely going to tackle some important matters of the heart today. We’re sure that you know about aerobics and cardiovascular healthboosting foods, but you could still be putting your heart at risk if you follow some of these nasty habits. And, while these habits cannot be compared to the heavy, painful ache that you feel after a breakup, it is very important to change them if you’d like your heart to stay healthy in the long run. Take a look at the everyday actions that are harming your heart. n Watching TV: Cosying up with your partner in front of the TV with a bowl of buttered popcorn in hand may seem like the perfect date. But, remember that your occasional workout routine will not compensate for the amount of time that you spend sitting, and the lack of movement will increase the levels of fat and sugar in your body. n Bottling up emotions: The next time your partner says that they want to talk it out, we recommend that you fulfil their request — if not for your relationship, then for your heart. Constantly feeling angry, depressed or stressed out, negatively affects your heart’s health.

PregnanT Pause Contracting the flu when you’re pregnant can lead to severe complications. This is why it’s important to recognise the symptoms of the flu and contact your physician immediately in order to avoid any problems. It is also a good idea to get a flu shot if you’re pregnant, or intend to get pregnant during flu season.

Pneumonia PaniC Pneumonia is among the most serious flu complications. It can occur because of the impact that the flu virus has on your lungs or when a bacterial infection develops during the course of the flu. Whether viral or bacterial, pneumonia can make you quite ill and may lead to hospitalisation. Pneumonia can also be fatal if the patient isn’t given the required attention.

BronChiTis Blues Even though pneumonia is the most dangerous out of the lot, the flu can also cause bronchitis, which, if not treated on time, can become a lifelong illness. So, consult your doctor immediately and make sure that you get an annual flu vaccination, especially if you experience coughs or shortness of breath for more than three weeks at a stretch.

asThma Flare-uPs Cold and the flu are the most common causes for asthma flare-ups. Even a mild flu can cause a tightness in your chest or lead to wheezing if you suffer from asthma. Sometimes, your regular asthma medications may fail to relieve the asthma symptoms associated with a cold or the flu. So, make sure that you take the necessary precautions and consult your doctor to avoid aggravating your condition.

n Following bad oral hygiene: Don’t get any

naughty ideas! We’re still talking about keeping your heart healthy. While this is one of the most debated issues in the medical community, there are threads of evidence that seem to connect your heart health with gum disease. A popular theory suggests that the bacteria that is responsible for gum diseases can also cause inflammation in other parts of your body. It hasn’t been proved yet, but bad oral hygiene doesn’t really hurt, does it? Oh, and of course, it helps with the naughty thoughts that you thought of earlier! n Cutting the world off: There is nothing sexy about loneliness. Apart from affecting the way you’re perceived, staying cooped up all by yourself, will harm your cardiovascular health. Several studies have shown that people with stronger friendships and family connections are more likely to lead longer, healthier lives. n Being lazy about health: Being lazy about your health to the extent that you miss doctor’s appointments, avoid yearly check ups, stop taking medication mid-course and ignore important symptoms, can lead to ugly consequences. Unlike your partner, your heart can’t really vent. So, it’s important to keep a tab on its health in order to catch the beginning of any potentially deadly complications.

>> Heat styling tools and improper care can rob your hair of its natural shine. Try some of our tips to get drool-worthy glossy locks

BarBara, our Beauty expert, will help fix your proBlems

Dear Barbara, I have been using a specific brand of shampoo for as long as I can recall, and I only recently switched to a different brand. Lately, I have noticed that my hair has been significantly greasy. I usually follow the lather-rinse-repeat rule when I’m washing oiled hair, and after noticing the greasiness, I have started following the same rule even when I don’t oil my hair. Sometimes I use a straightener to style my hair and now when I do, it has started to look as though I am frying it! Could my new shampoo be the culprit? — meher gulati, wadala Dear meher, If you had a brand of shampoo that worked for you all these years, there’s no need to change it. The reason your hair is greasy is probably because of certain ingredients in the new shampoo. Certain chemicals present in this new shampoo have been weighing your hair down. We suggest that you switch back to your old shampoo. For now, pick a good shampoo that is specially formulated to clear product build-up.

The Gloss FacTor Improper hair-care techniques can leave your hair looking dull and lacklustre. Sara Shah suggests you try these 10 tips to add a glossy sheen to those lifeless strands

F

or most of us, our hair is our most coveted feature. But, we often end up subjecting it to immeasurable damage by using styling products and heating tools that leave it looking dull, lifeless and frizzy. Glossy locks are not only a sign of healthy hair, they are usually the crowning glory to most of our outfits and looks. So, here are few tips to get glossy hair that can rival a shampoo commercial.

Deep treatments

Dear Barbara, A week ago, I noticed that my finger nails have started to peel off. I have never had such an issue before. Not only are they peeling off, they are also turning yellow. It is quite an embarrassing situation as I have noticed people cringe when they look at my nails. What could the reason be? Please suggest a suitable solution. — reema Khan, Bandra Dear reema, There are several factors that can cause your nails to yellow and peel. It could be due to a change in your diet, stress or exposure to certain chemicals. The only solution is to consult a doctor. If you have started a new diet that requires you to avoid eating certain foods, it may result in a lack of a certain nutrient, possibly vitamins B or D. Also, avoid applying any nail paint on to your nails in order to prevent further exposure to any harmful chemicals. See a dermatologist, pronto.

You may have read our article last week about the contradictory effects of coconut oil. We suggest using organic, cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil for consumption as well as topical purposes. Coconut oil that has been formulated specifically for cosmetic purposes, contains a chockfull of chemicals that can double the damage done to your hair, weighing it down. Massage pure coconut oil into your scalp at least twice a week in order to deep condition your hair. If you have an oily scalp, use a smaller amount on your scalp and focus more on the ends of your hair.

avoiD hot tools We know how difficult it is to part with your coveted hair straightener and curling tongs. Now we aren’t asking you to avoid them altogether, but reducing the amount of time that your hair is exposed to hot tools will increase the gloss factor in the long run. Go a month without using your straightener and see the difference!

emBrace your hair Accept the natural texture of your hair. If your hair is curly, learn to love your curls. Before complaining about your poker straight hair, remember that women the all over the world envy your shiny, straight

strands. More often than not, in the quest to attain hair with texture other than its natural one, we end up subjecting it to treatments that rob it of its natural sheen.

say no to steamy Baths The effectiveness of a cold shower rinse is still debatable, but you should definitely avoid steaming hot showers. Just like hot tools, hot water robs your hair of its moisture, leaving you with frizzy, dull hair. So, always wash your hair with lukewarm water.

use silicon flatirons We understand the agony of parting ways with your flat iron. So, what you can do is pick a flat iron that has silicone built-in the plates instead. The silicone will glide over your hair in one or two passes and will also cut down the time it takes to straighten your hair.

Brush your hair Brushing your hair in 100 strokes, every time you comb your hair is not a complete myth. It is essential that you brush your hair at least three times a day, as this helps evenly spread the oil on your scalp through the strands, giving them a natural shine.

that you know how to correctly use them while you’re styling your hair. Don’t make the mistake of applying serum at the roots of your hair. This will weigh your hair down and lead to product build-up. Instead, use a pea-sized amount on the ends of your hair and slowly work your way to the top. Serums are usually made of a mild concentration of oils or silicone, which coats your hair strands and provides a temporary shine.

leave-in conDitioners Leave-in conditioners are far less damaging and provide all-day moisture. There are a variety of leave-in conditioners in both spray-on as well as lotion forms and you can apply them just like how you would apply serum.

go natural Hair masks are a great way to get glossy strands instantly. While there are several good, hydrating masks available in the market, it’s best to stay natural and prepare your own hair mask at home with natural ingredients.

smart Blow Drying While you blow dry your hair, direct the nozzle of your hair dryer towards the hair shaft. This will push the cuticle of your hair downwards and will provide a longer lasting solution for frizzy hair.

say yes to serums Yes, serums are technically a chemical solution, but it is essential

India may host meet of India-Pacific nations

India is planning to host the second conclave of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation this year after the one held in Fiji few months back as part of efforts to build ties with countries of these regions. This was stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his congratulatory message to Akilisi Pohiva on his election as the Prime Minister of Tonga.

HMEDABAD/NEW DELHI: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money on Monday decided to widen its probe as new names of Indians with Swiss bank accounts have come up but made it clear that legal action will be taken only after verifying facts. "Definitely, the scope of investigation will be widened due to the new names. We will have to identify those names and scrutinise them," SIT Chairman Justice (retd) M.B. Shah told PTI in Ahmedabad. He, however, said legal action can be taken against individuals only after verifying the facts and not just on the basis of news reports. "SIT will first verify the facts. We can't take action just on the basis of news reports. We will first verify the claims from our side and then take legal action," he said. He said, as per the reports published on Monday, there are "some old names, which we already have, and there are some new names of account holders." Meanwhile in Delhi, SIT ViceChairman Justice (retd) Arijit Pasayat, after holding a meeting of the high-powered panel, said it "will consider all new cases where there

is evidence of black money." "If any new names come and whichever way we have authentic information, we will act on it," he said after the over two-hour long meeting where existing cases of this nature were also reviewed. The new names reported by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) said their records, which were apparently obtained through leaks from a Geneva-based branch of HSBC bank, show that there are 1,668 Indians on it while the number of actionable cases stands at 1,195 after taking into account duplication and some other factors. Collectively, these accounts had a balance of US $4.1 billion (Rs 25,420 crore) till 2007. "There are some new names in the ICIJ list. But they are not many. It is estimated that this new disclosure and few others which are being tracked by tax sleuths for sometime now will lead to obtaining some 100 new names/cases. Whether they are illegal or not will be the work of investigation," official sources privy to the developments in SIT said. The SIT, which has top officers from various regulatory, investiga-

tive and enforcement agencies onboard, also reviewed during the meeting those black money and foreign account cases of Indians which will get "time barred" by March 31. "We will complete probe in all (black money) cases which are getting time barred by March 31. We are on the right track," Pasayat said. Sources said as SIT had already solicited information against Indian black money holders from the public and hence publishing of suspected Indian black money holders in a national daily qualifies to be the "first information" in this regard. "The agencies will now act and verify." they said. Sources added that the snoop wings of the Income Tax department, Enforcement Directorate and some other agencies have been asked to gather all possible information on the new names reported today and bring it on the table to be discussed by the SIT during its next meeting. "The new names will be brought under legal action only if there is any evidence against them. Only having names has not helped in the past and it will not help in the future too," they said.

Afzal Guru’s hanging ‘wrong’: Tharoor N

EW DELHI: In remarks that could fuel a controversy, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday said Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging was both "wrong and badly handled". "I think the hanging was both wrong & badly handled. Family should have been warned, given a last meeting & body returned," Tharoor said on Twitter responding to a remark on the issue. Guru was hanged on February 9, 2013 inside Tihar Jail. Separatist groups in Kashmir have called a strike today and on Shashi Tharoor February 11 to mark the death anniversaries of Guru and JKLF Hardline Hurriyat Conference founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and JKLF have called for the general respectively. strike and announced dharna on

the two days. A controversy had erupted soon after Guru's hanging over the purported communication from the Centre to his family which alleged that they had come to know about his execution from TV channels and Jammu & Kashmir government, reports PTI. While the Centre had then claimed that it sent a communication through speedpost, the family had raised questions as to whether there was a serious effort to inform the family. The then Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had also questioned the rationale of informing Guru's family through post saying the reliability of the medium

itself was questionable. Tharoor's statement comes after five Jammu and Kashmir lawmakers from Congress called Guru's hanging a 'mistake'. The Congress MLAs, a fortnight back, had said in a statement that not allowing his family to meet Guru was a mistake. The media reported that this was done apparently to secure the last vote to secure a Rajya Sabha seat for senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Upper House of Parliament. Opposition PDP in Jammu and Kashmir has slammed Congress for making a "U turn" on Guru hanging issue.

hough it is pertinent to note that the film industry in India was born in Maharashtra and though it was thanks to a Maharashtrian pioneer, many Maharashtrian artistes are found hesitating to act in Marathi films, in spite of being Maharashtrians who have Marathi as their mother tongue. Till today, it remains an unsolved mystery and very few show the zeal and enthusiasm to serve the Marathi film industry after earning a lot of laurels by working in films in other languages or winning beauty pageants all over the world. One among the few who has taken pride in being a Maharashtrian and vowed to make her debut in Marathi films with a film is none other than Manasi Moghe, who had won the coveted title of ‘Miss Universe 2013’ and was one of the finalists of ‘Miss Diva’ contest. Though she had a lot of offers in Hindi films, Manasi chose to make her debut in films with 'Bhugadi Mazi Sandli Ga' which is being presented by Von Ryans Entertainment and produced by producer Shyam Singhania under his banner Ticket Films, who says that he too opted to make his bow as a producer with a Marathi film instead of trying his hand at making a film in Bollywood because he is rooted to the soil of Maharashtra. According to Singhania, the plus point of his film which is being directed by Mansingh Pawar who is also writing the story, screenplay as well as the dialogues is Nagpur based. Manasi Moghe confesses that it was good that even when she was keen on making her debut with a Marathi film, the offer to make her debut with 'Bugadi Mazi Sandli Ga' landed on her lap and hence she said yes to it without any hesitation because she was glad that she could try her hand at acting in a film which is rooted to the soil and based on Marathi folklore and has a strong and powerful subject and excellent music which is catchy as well as soulful and also boasts of an ensemble cast, with a director like Mansingh Pawar helming it. She further adds that she had to prepare a lot for the lavni sequences under the eagle eye of choreographer Deepali Vichare who took a lot of pain to make her dance sequences perfect. Manasi further says, she is thankful to producer Shyam Singhania for giving her a big ticket film. She hopes she will live up to his confidence in the very interesting role of a tamasha artiste falling in love with a rich family scion who is a NRI and a western classical music enthusiast played by Kashyap Parulekar who was a dream to work with, says Manasi. We hope all of Manasi's dreams come true with the film releasing soon.

Tembe had an analytical mind. He had a keen aesthetic insight and an analytical mind. He wrote his impressions of the musicians he heard and the great masters. Tembe wrote a biography of Jaipur Attrauli gharana founder Alladiya Khan. He also wrote a wonderful book entitled 'Maza Sangeet Vyasang'. The late C R Kudyadi translated the book into English. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan undertook to publish the book and make the treasure accessible to the English knowing readers. The book was released with fanfare at a special function at the Bhavan's Chowpatty Auditorium. Elder musician and harmonist Tulsidas Borkar released the book. Borkar who turned 80 recently and

had interacted with Tembe recalled Tembe's contribution to Hindustani music. He also spoke about Tembe's multi-dimensional personality. Borkar was felicitated on this occasion. Clippings of Tembe's film appearances were screened and his audio clip in which he had played the raga 'Mand' was also played. It was a terrific performance. Tembe had connections with the Agra gharana. Therefore, Ghulam Hasnain Khan aka Raja Miyan was asked to perform. He sang ragas 'Yaman' and 'Jaijaivanti' with elan. His loud songs made a good impression. His controlled aggression was welcomed by the audience with applause. Yati Bhagwat on the tabla and Shrinivas Acharya on the harmonium lent superb support.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20): You have vague feeling that things are not quite right. Do not despair. It may turn out that your plans need to be rearranged in a more suitable manner. A creative talent, sports or a personal hobby will bring you into the limelight. An outing with friends will help improve your mood. A new experience, something unplanned will help you get over a disturbed state of mind. You will feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): At a meeting you need to listen to the point of view of others before drawing your own conclusions. A career change is also likely but the benefits may be less than what you had expected. Patience and forbearance now will be rewarding later. Keep your expenses in check to save problems later. You may be faced with situation that demands tact and a cool head. Be firm but not rude. Avoid scenes to keep your dignity intact.

LEO (July 22 - August 21): Business negotiations for fresh projects go through smoothly. Those in the field of sales and marketing will be in limelight. You are likely to get monetary gains through fresh projects or agency work. Some of you may be planning a trip abroad for work. A new friendship could create problems with a close associate who will be feeling very possessive about you. You will have to tactfully mange the situation.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): Plan your immediate needs and work towards achieving it. Hard work and perseverance will certainly get rewarded. If you find yourself constricted in any manner, do not hesitate to seek help and advice of others. Take the initiative to patch up your difference with a colleague or an associate. A person you admire secretly seems to be getting drawn towards you. You have an exciting relationship in the making.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): Gains from property are indicated. Family affairs come under favorable aspects. A creative and artistic urge will find a rewarding outlet. You will be the centre of attraction at a party this evening. Love life is full of excitement and pleasant surprises. A staid romance could suddenly become a more meaningful relationship.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Avoid taking anything for granted regardless of how satisfactory things may appear. Give assistance only where it will be appreciated. You should be able to obtain the results you desire by combining efforts with the work of others. Family will be supportive of your actions. You will meet a person of great charm. It seems you will develop an instant liking but it is prudent not to show an eagerness to get to know the person better.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): Your own inhibitions and lack of confidence in your abilities stand in the way of your progress. Take corrective measures. Do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it. This way others may come closer to you and share your problems. You will buy something expensive for the home and yourself. Feeling emotional you need extra caring and company of those who love you. Open your heart and talk about what is on your mind or what ails you. AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): This is not a day to mope and feel sorry for you. You may be asked to deal with an emergency at rather short notice and will be well compensated for your efforts. If you have been feeling left out from real and challenging work, you will now be given charge of one. Be more observant. You are too preoccupied with yourself to notice the caring support you are getting form someone close.

CANCER (June 21 - July 21): Your current success could make you overly impulsive and indulge in speculative trading. As long as you make investments after guidance of an expert, you will be safe. Explore new avenues of work to improve your chances of further growth in your career. You spend a good time with family and a few old friends. You may also discuss some plans for a forthcoming holiday trip together.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Multi tasking will not work today; you need all the help that you can get from others. Work in cooperation to achieve optimum results. Those of you who may have started something on the side to supplement your income may get into trouble as far as their routine job or work is concerned. What you imagine is love could turn out to be an infatuation. Do not seek or give a commitment right now in a relationship for there could be a deception.

CAPRICORN (December 21 January 19): Over enthusiasm, or taking on more work than you can handle, is the cause of your present predicament. Cut back on losses, and curb unnecessary expenditure. There is a glimmer of hope that may come through an opportunity to make sudden money through transaction proposed by someone you know. Not much happening in love life as you will be focused on other areas of existence which are also important to you right now.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): You are confronted with unusual problem at work. This can intrigue you and yet you may even succeed in solving it. Keep a promise you have recently made to yourself. Also fulfill any work aims you set yourself for the day. If you are meeting someone for the first time rest assured that you will make a good impression. It may not be love at first sight but is a good beginning.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2015

M

UMBAI: Forty-time champions Mumbai sneaked into the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament by virtue of their first innings lead in their last Group A league match against holders Karnataka, which ended in a draw here today. Going into the final day of the four-day game after taking a small but vital 21-run lead over the visitors, Mumbai had one eye on three other games in the same group before advancing as the third best team with a tally of 20 points. Karnataka, already assured of a berth in the last eight before the start of the game, finished on top of the Group with 33 points, including the one point earned in this match, while Tamil Nadu finished second with 29 points after defeating Baroda by seven wickets in the latter’s backyard. The result of two other games held concurrently in the group — Madhya Pradesh against Bengal at Indore and Railways against Uttar Pradesh at Delhi — also helped Mumbai’s entry into

the last eight. The quarterfinals have been scheduled at Lahli, Jaipur, Indore and Cuttack from February 15-19. Today, Mumbai wanted to make some quick runs and set a target for Karnataka but lost wickets at regular intervals against the double spin attack of off spinner Udit Patel and leg spinner Shreyas Gopal before declaring their second innings at 223 for eight.Suryakumar Yadav remained unbeaten on 77 (7X4 2X6), while first innings centurion Nikhil Patil scored 48. It left Mumbai with 39 overs to take all 10 second innings wickets of Karnataka, who needed 245 to win the game outright. The game was drawn with the visitors on 110 for one with Robin Uthappa (44) and Kunal Kapoor (50) at the crease. Brief scores: Mumbai 436 & 223 for eight decl. (Suryakumar Yadav 77 not out, Nikhil Patil 48; Udit Patel 4/55, Abhimanyu Mithun 2/37). Karnataka 415 & 110 for one (Robin Uthappa 44 not out, Kunal Kapoor 50 not out). Points: Mumbai 3; Karnataka 1

UMBAI: Mumbai today sneaked into the knockout stage as the third-best team in Group A and coach Pravin Amre said his team showed a lot of character to bounce back after a disastrous start to their campaign at the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament. Mumbai have rarely been tested in the past as much as they were this season in their quest to enter the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament’s knock out stages. “We started with a shock defeat to Jammu and Kashmir and then our morale was down after the defeat to Tamil Nadu. But the boys showed tremendous character. It’s a young team with seven debutants,” said Amre. The 40-time champions sneaked into the last eight after their drawn encounter against defending champions Karnataka from which Mumbai earned three points to finish the league engagements with 20 points to their credit, behind toppers Karnataka (33) and No. 2 Tamil Nadu (29). Mumbai had started their campaign on a dismal note by losing outright to

Then came a topsy turvy ride for Mumbai who hit the crest of the wave before crashing down on the next leading up to a lot of anxiety till the end of the league stage of the tournament. Amre said throughout the last day of the game today against Karnataka the team constantly monitored the results of other Group A games that could impact their entry. The former India Test batsman also credited youngsters like Shreyas Iyer (over 600 runs), Siddhesh Lad (over 4000 runs) and medium pacer Shardul Thakur (32 wickets) for the turn around. He also did not forget to mention ex-captain Suryakumar Yadav’s contribution (over 500 runs) and new skipper Aditya Tare who scored a timely ton in the crunch game against Baroda. Looking at the knock outs, Amre said “Knock outs are different from the league.”

PB moves SC against HC order barring sharing of cricket WC feed

EW DELHI: Government today moved the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court judgement barring Prasar Bharati from sharing with cable operators through Doordarshan (DD) channels the live feed of the 2015 Cricket World Cup, of which ESPN and Star have

exclusive broadcasting rights. The appeals filed by the Centre and Prasar Bharati was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India H L Dattu, which fixed it for hearing tomorrow. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who will argue the matter, said the High Court verdict

was not only against the mandate of the Sports Act and Cable TV Network Act but was also contrary to public interest. The AG said among the grounds taken in the petition, it has been argued that it was mandatory under laws for the private channels to share the feeds with Prasar Bharati.

Pakistan can break WC jinx against India this time: Abbas By Mona Parthsarathi

N

EW DELHI: Batting great Zaheer Abbas feels that considering India’s recent dismal show in Australia, Pakistan has a golden chance this time to break the jinx of not beating the defending champions in a World Cup match. Pakistan could never win against arch rivals India in the last five meetings of the World Cup. They play against each other in their campaign

opener in a potentially high voltage contest on February 15 at Adelaide oval. “I think Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will make it to the semifinals. The fourth team will be either India or Pakistan. Hence, the first match is very crucial and it will be really a high voltage contest,” Abbas said. “Pakistan could never win against India in a World Cup but they have a golden chance to break that jinx this time. I have seen India’s per-

formance in Australia and their first practice match against the hosts yesterday, so I can say that. I hope that Pakistan can find their team combination right as the injury list is growing day by day,” he said in an interview. He said that India, being the defending champion, will be under more pressure than Pakistan.“India are the defending champions, so there will be more pressure on them to perform as compared to Pakistan,”

UNDER-FIRE INDIA LOOK TO TUNE UP AGAINST AFGHAN 30

SPORTS

A

DELAIDE: Still looking to get their playing combination in order, an under-fire India will be looking for resurrection against first-timers Afghanistan in their final warm-up game before the cricket World Cup, here tomorrow. India’s preparations for the 50over showpiece event suffered a jolt yesterday as Australia thrashed the defending champions by 106 runs at the Adelaide Oval. If the bowling continued to falter by conceding 371 runs against the hosts, the batsmen did no better as they wobbled to 265 in 45.1 overs. The Indian bowling has come under intense criticism after its below-par showing in the 0-2 defeat in the four-match Test series and its failure to win a single ODI in the triseries. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s own form is also a cause for concern for the Men in Blue after he scored a duck in the first practice match. A spate of injuries to Ishant

HRISTCHURCH: South Africa’s Cricket World Cup warmup match against Sri Lanka was severely shortened by rain Monday but there was still time for both teams to send a warning to opponents before the tournament begins Saturday. Sri Lanka made 279-7 in an impressive innings, shortened to 44.4 overs by rain, and South Africa’s winning target was twice adjusted because of stoppages before it reached 188 in 24.3 overs to win by five wickets under the Duckworth Lewis system. South Africa scraped home with three balls to spare. Quinton de Kock (66) and stand-in captain Hashim Amla (46) put on 116 for the first wicket, giving South Africa a platform and flexibility when rain intervened.Rilee Rossouw (16 not out) and Vernon Philander (13 not out) were there at the end. South Africa was without captain A.B. De Villiers, who was rested because of tightness in one hip, but still functioned efficiently under the leadership of Amla, reinforcing its reputation as one of the teams to beat at this year’s tournament.

Sharma, who failed a fitness Test and has been replaced by Mohit Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rohit Sharma and the top-order’s patchy batting form has made things difficult for India. Putting up a brave face after the loss against Australia, Dhoni still tried to take out some positives from the game but the team’s onfield performances surely is a cause for concern for the 2011 champions. Afghanistan, on the other hand, are a side hungry to make an impact

in their maiden 50-over World Cup outing. Led by the experienced Mohammad Nabi, the side boasts of some impactful players like left-arm pacer Shapoor Zadran, young pacer Aftab Alam and former skipper and solid middle-order batsman Nawroz Mangal to name a few. The team that only got full oneday status in 2011 is dreaming big and Nabi claims that the side will be no pushovers in the 11th edition of the Cup. “We have been working hard for the past 4-5 months and our aim is to get to the next stage. We are all excited as a unit and hopefully we can live up to the expectations of our fans back home,” said Nabi on the sidelines of the team’s net session. While Afghanistan start their campaign against Bangladesh on February 18 against Bangladesh, India begin their defence against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.

Fifer by Chris Woakes helps England crush West Indies

S

YDNEY: Seamer Chris Woakes geared up for the World Cup with a five-wicket haul to help England demolish the West Indies by nine wickets in a warm-up match in Sydney today. Woakes took 5-19 in 7.3 overs of skilled swing bowling to dismiss the West Indies for a paltry 122 in 29.3 overs. England chased down the target for the loss of just one wicket in 22.5 overs. Woakes dismissed dashing opener Chris Gayle off the third ball of the first over for a duck and off the very next ball had Darren Bravo, who also failed to score. He then dismissed Dwayne Smith (21) in his fourth over to leave the West Indies reeling on 35-3. Lendl Simmons top-scored with 45 with four boundaries and a six before Woakes returned for his second spell to dismiss Simmons and Andre Russell to cap an impressive day.Fellow fast bowler Steven Finn took 2-34. Opener Moeen Ali hit 46 off 43 balls with nine boundaries and put

on 70 for the opening wicket with Ian Bell who made 35 not out. James Taylor made 25 not out and helped add 55 in an unbroken second-wicket stand. The victory will give England much-needed confidence before their opening World Cup game against Australia.

Tri-series showing doesn’t augur well for India: Fleming By Bharat Sharma

N

EW DELHI: Former Australian pacer Damien Fleming always had India in his final four of the World Cup until they carried their winless run of the Test series into the recent tri-series Down Under. Australia piled on further misery on the Indians by hammering them in a World Cup warm-up game at Adelaide yesterday. “Australia, New Zealand, South Africa should go on to make the semis. I had India in the top-four until the tri- series. I don’t see a lot of penetration in their bowling but I thought they had a batting to score big enough that their bowlers could defend. But even that did not happen in the recent one-dayers,” Fleming told PTI expressing his concern for the defending champions.

The cricketer-turned commentator reckons facing two new balls from either end is another worry for India. There could be a likely scenario where they have to rely on batsmen to win matches as the bowling is not good enough. “May be these two new balls from each end are a concern for the Indian top order. There is immense potential in batting with the likes of Kohli, Raina, Rohit and Rahane, who I feel has been super impressive on Australian pitches. “India still got the potential to score big and I think they will have to because I don’t think they would be bowling teams out for 240-250. “So India still got a slight chance, and amongst the other Asian teams can you never underrate Sri Lanka. They always manage to reach the semis and finals of the big events,”

said Fleming, himself a two-time World Cupper of 1996 and 1999, when his team had contrasting results in the title clash. Looking back at his glory days, Fleming feels he was fortunate to be part of the winning team in 1999 after ending runners-up against Sri Lanka in the previous edition. “Winning the World Cup at Lord’s against Pakistan has to be the ultimate highlight of my career. I was fortunate to get a second shot at winning the title, having lost the final three years ago. It is still fresh in the memory that we went down the Lord’s pitch with the trophy, Ricky Ponting sang our song as we had a few beers.” His “individual highlight” came in the 1996 edition against India at the famous Wankhede, where he took a career-best five for 36 in Australia’s 16-run win over the co-hosts.

Malinga says he will be fit for World Cup opener W

ELLINGTON: Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga has declared himself fit to play against New Zealand in the opening match of the Cricket World Cup on Saturday. An ankle injury prevented Malinga from playing in Sri Lanka’s seven-match one-day series against New Zealand in the lead-up to the world tournament but he told reporters Sunday he is ready to return. Malinga is likely to play in Sri Lanka’s World Cup warm-up matches against South Africa in Christchurch on Monday and Zimbabwe on Wednesday. Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said Malinga was “back to full fitness. He’s doing everything 100 percent, he’ll be 100 percent for the games.” Malinga was less emphatic, saying “I’m getting used to the pain be-

cause I really want to play in this World Cup. If there’s pain, it doesn’t matter. I want to play. ... I’m not sure of the pace and how that’s going, but I’ve got good rhythm and a good run up.” Malinga has been described as the best death bowler in world cricket and his return substantially strengthens Sri Lanka, who were beaten 4-2 in the series against New Zealand. Mathews said “Lasith has the X-factor” which could swing the World Cup opener in Sri Lanka’s favor. Malinga said he wasn’t concerned that Sri Lanka was investing so much hope in his return. “Honestly, I don’t know what the pressure means,” he said. “I’m used to all the pressure situations. I have a free mindset and I just want to do what I can do.”

AIRO: At least 22 people were killed and several others injured in clashes between police and Egyptian soccer fans who were trying to force their way into a stadium here for a match, in one of the deadliest game-related incidents in the soccer-crazy country. The Ministry of Interior said the incident took place outside the Air Defence Stadium in Cairo ahead of a match between Egyptian Premier League clubs Zamalek and ENPPI. The clashes started when police used tear gas to disperse members of the Ultras White Knights fan group in front of the stadium, a few hours before Zamalek played ENPPI in a top-of-the-table clash. The reports said supporters of Zamalek, known as Ultras White Knights, tried to storm into the match without tickets. Most of the dead were suffocated to death after police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, doctors and witnesses said. At least 22 had died in the clashes, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported. “They died of suffocation and stampede after being tear-gassed,”

Deepika leads Jharkhand to recurve gold in Nat’l Games By Poonam Mehra

HIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former Commonwealth and Asian Games medallist Deepika Kumari steered Jhakhand to two team gold medals in the recurve archery events but stunningly missed out on an individual podium finish even as the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) continued to stay on course for a hat-trick of overall titles on the eighth day of competitions in the 35th National Games here today. SSCB were perched firmly at the top in overall medal standings with a total of 78 — 48 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze. Maharashtra remained second on account of lesser gold medals with a total tally of 91 (27 gold, 37 silver and 27 bronze), followed by Haryana (27 gold, 18 silver and 7 bronze). At the archery arena in Kochi, the action concluded with the recurve events in which Jharkhand swept the women’s competition, winning three gold medals (women’s team, mixed team and individual). Jharkhand, spearheaded by Deepika, beat Manipur, which featured veteran Bombayla Devi among others, in both the women’s team and mixed team finals to emerge on top. The individual gold was brought in by Laxmi Rani Majhi, who sailed past Satbir Kaur Saini of Assam 7-3 in the summit clash. Deepika, a former world number one, finished fourth in the individual event after losing the bronze medal playoff 2-6 to Uttar Pradesh archer Seema Verma. The mixed team and the women’s team bronze went to Bengal, featuring the likes of seasoned Dola Banerjee. The eastern state beat Assam in both the playoffs. The men’s team gold was grabbed by Uttar Pradesh, ahead of Assam and SSCB respectively.

stadium, it said. “More than ten thousand people, who did not have tickets for the match, tried to break into the stadium. A number of them were killed and dozens injured due to stampede,” the Egyptian Interior Ministry said in statement. The security forces tried to disperse the fans after they blocked road and torched a police vehicle. A security source said that 17 Zamalek fans were arrested for inciting violence. Egypt’s prosecution said the bodies of the victims were transferred to a Cairo morgue. State-run news agency MENA said at least 25 were injured. The match went ahead despite the deadly clashes but Zamalek’s full-back Omar Gaber, a favourite figure among the ultras, withdrew in support of the fans. There are doubts over whether the league competition will resume this season after it was postponed for an indefinite period. Egypt has curbed the number of people allowed into football matches since a riot at a stadium in Port Said where more than 70 people were killed in a similar incident after a game in February 2012.

Cost-effective Village a hit with the athletes By Lekhsmi Gopalakrishanan

Jharkhand's Deepika Kumari (R ) Lakshmi Rani (C) and Reena Kumari (L) after winning gold in women's Recurve team event at National Games in Kochi on Monday. In athletics, which began today, favourites and hosts Kerala suffered a setback on the very first day when star long jumper Ranjith Maheshwary failed to make the finals after being disqualified for false starts in the qualifying round this morning. Elsewhere, SSCB were the dominant force in men’s triathlon, walking away with both the individual as well as the team gold medals. Minachandra won the individual gold before teaming up with Dilip and Gurudatt to finish on top in the team competition. The individual silver and bronze went to Dilip and Manipur’s Ma-

hesh respectively, while Goa (Mani Singh, Bishworjit Singh and Dhiraj) and Manipur (Mahesh, Sushil Singh and Dewanjit Singh) took the second and third spot in the team final. The women’s triathlon was expectedly swept by Gujarat’s Pooja Chaurushi, the first Indian to win an international triathlon championship — the South Asian Championships in 2014. She won the individual gold, before combing with Pallavi and Pragnya to nab the team gold as well. The individual silver and bronze went into Manipur’s kitty through Linthoingambi and Rani Devi re-

spectively. The second and third position in the team event, on the other hand, were claimed by Maharashtra (Poonam, Chaitrali and Tejashree) and Madhya Pradesh (Inu Ramprasad, Neha and Aarti). The individual and team events in triathlon comprise of a 1500m swim, a 40km cycling race and finally a 10km run. In wushu, SSCB’s Sajan Lama notched up the men’s Taolu (Nanquan) gold with 9.26 points, followed by Manipur’s Punshiba Mayangallambam (9.03 points). Jharkhand’s Deepak Bahadur (7.73) finished a distant third.

HIRUVANANATHAPURAM: Beautifully aligned hut-like housing units surrounded by symbols of Kerala’s cultural heritage and life size posters of Goodwill Ambassador Sachin Tendulkar welcoming athletes — the National Games Village here has managed to impress one and all for being professionally managed and well-maintained. Tucked away at Menamkulam, about 20km from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Village has all essential facilities ranging from a bank, a fitness centre and a food court besides coffee parlours, ayurvedic centres, a solid waste management system and recreational zones. Tendulkar can be seen in every nook and corner of the Village, offering visitors a warm welcome and calling on the athletes to aim for perfection in life-size posters. A sprawling food court, with a lip-smacking spread of ethnic delicacies from different states of the country ensures that every taste-bud is taken care of. Majority of athletes, coaches and team officials, who have seen “substandard facilities” in many previous Games, are all praise for the Village here. Morramme, a vibrant triathlon player from Assam, said she was pleasantly surprised to find airconditioned accommodation for the athletes and were several notches better than what even her home state offered in 2007.
