BUILDING CONNECTIONS AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN REAL ESTATE

PROOF

Meet Matt Jensen, a dedicated Realtor who is originally from Boulder County. Known for the funny myth surrounding Boulder County that draws its residents back like a magnet, Matt embraces the so-called “Curse of Chief Niwot.” As a Boulder High graduate, he experienced the nostalgic feeling of returning to the breathtaking view of the Flatirons, wondering why he ever left.

Matt’s journey from college baseball to teaching, entrepreneurship, and eventually real estate has shaped him into a person driven by authentic connections and a desire to serve others.

Growing up, baseball played a significant role in Matt’s

life. He received a scholarship to Dakota Wesleyan University, a small NAIA school located in the wintery city of Mitchell, South Dakota. However, Matt soon realized that the environment didn’t suit him, prompting a transfer to a junior college in Kansas. Eventually, he found his way to the University of Northern Colorado, where he pursued a degree in broadcast journalism. Matt’s dream of becoming a sportscaster for ESPN seemed within reach, but he humorously remarks, “They said I have a face for radio.”

Before finding his true calling in real estate, Matt embarked on various career paths that enriched his skills and shaped his character. From waiting tables in college to coaching baseball and engaging in corporate sales, Matt garnered valuable insights and learned the importance of hard work, ambition, and personal growth. He even ventured into entrepreneurship by starting his own sports apparel business, which taught him invaluable lessons about building infrastructure, creating systems,

and managing processes. Throughout these diverse experiences, Matt discovered his love for connecting with people on an authentic and meaningful level.

Meeting his wife, Diane, who worked as a counselor at New Vista High School, prompted Matt to pursue a job in education. He obtained the necessary credentials and became an adjunct teacher. Additionally, he was the head baseball coach at Monarch High School from 2009-2010. When Matt recognized the need for a change, he decided to explore a career in sales, ultimately joining Housing Helpers, a real estate company in Boulder. The success he achieved while helping people find rentals inspired

him to obtain his real estate license, and he joined WK Real Estate.

When Matt began his journey in real estate, the vice president of WK Real Estate challenged him to make a multi-year commitment to the effort. She said, “I want you to commit to four years; can you do that? No matter what happens, give it four years, and I think you’ll thrive.”

Determined to succeed, Matt embraced the opportunity and indeed thrived within that timeframe. Though he faced ups and downs, he remained loyal to WK Real Estate because he loved the company’s local and community-oriented approach. Matt realized that his true

motivation lay in connecting with people rather than viewing real estate as a mere transaction. By focusing on building relationships and providing exceptional service, he discovered that success naturally followed.

Matt’s passion for education is evident in his approach to real estate, and he particularly likes clients who are coachable. He is a mentor to real estate students who attend the University of Colorado Leeds Business School. “I’ve done this for the past three years and have found it really rewarding to help educate young people about the challenges of choosing a career in real estate. Some of them have even interned with me.”

Matt enjoys working with first-time homebuyers, who often require guidance and support throughout the process. Recognizing their excitement and the challenges they face, Matt takes on the role of clearing roadblocks, helping them make informed decisions. He sees a trend of finding opportunities to become creative with lending to counteract the high interest rates now. With strong relationships with lenders, he navigates these

waters to ensure his clients’ dreams become a reality.

One memorable experience showcases Matt’s dedication to his clients. A lead from Zillow approached him after their deal fell through with an online lender. Devastated, the client was on the verge of giving up. Sensing the importance of the situation, Matt connected them with a trusted contact who saved the day. To express his gratitude, Matt bought her a tiara at the closing, recognizing her exemplary work. Furthermore, he willingly sacrificed a portion of his commission to help the client secure their dream home. Matt says, “In this situation, it was simply the right thing to do.”

During a training course, a significant turning point in Matt’s journey unfolded. As the speaker recounted a success story, Matt found himself captivated by the narrative. What made this moment even more remarkable was the fact that he was seated right beside this individual, Chris Doyle, a highly respected Realtor affiliated with The Group. Chris’s presence and the powerful message he conveyed

deeply resonated with Matt, prompting a shift in his mindset. Inspired by Chris’s profound words, “people to serve,” Matt recognized that true personal and professional fulfillment lay in selflessly serving others.

This realization became the cornerstone of his approach to various aspects of his life, including real estate, volunteering, coaching, and community engagement. By prioritizing service to others, Matt discovered that not only did it bring him a profound sense of personal satisfaction, but it also became the catalyst for business success.

Beyond his professional life, Matt values his family time with his wife, Diane, and

their nine-year-old daughter, Natalie. Together, they lead an active lifestyle. They find relaxation in dining out, enjoying movies at home, and engaging in friendly games, where Matt claims his dominance. He enjoys strumming his guitar as a means of relaxation. The family’s love for hockey, fueled by Natalie’s participation in the sport, is a new pastime that the family is obsessed with.

Speaking of sports, Matt is a huge University of Colorado Buffs fan.

Matt had a unique opportunity in 2013 to revitalize a historical semi-professional baseball team known as the Boulder Collegians. Originally established by a local businessman named Bauldie Moschetti, the Collegians had achieved

national recognition and secured six National Championships during the 1960s and 1970s. From 2013 to 2020, Matt served as the team’s General Manager. However, the progression of his real estate career compelled him to face a difficult choice: parting ways with the team. Fortunately, a group of devoted baseball enthusiasts assumed control, allowing him to continue supporting the team as a donor and sponsor. Matt says, “Giving up the team was one of the most challenging things I have ever encountered. But because of that decision, I’ve been able to assist a larger number of individuals in making one of the most significant purchases of their lives.”

Matt likes to think of himself as “Mr. Community.” He is an ambassador to the Boulder Chamber of Commerce and a former chair for the Young Professionals Board where he grew the constituency by 600%. Additionally, his involvement as a Boulder Community Foundation Leadership Fellows Alumni

further demonstrates his commitment to civic engagement. Focusing on meeting basic needs, Matt dedicates his efforts to organizations like Community Food Share. He serves on various committees, including the golf tournament committee, donates regularly, and initiated the Community Food Share Bracket Challenge for March Madness. His passion for creating impactful events extends to hosting a family-friendly cruiser ride on the Boulder Creek Path, raising $4,000 for a local charity last year.

Above all else, Matt wants readers to understand his unwavering dedication to fostering connections, prioritizing people over transactions, and supporting individuals through significant life transitions.

“I firmly believe that my impact is both tangible and meaningful, and it all circles back to the power of genuine connections,” states Matt. He takes great joy in serving not only his clients but also his friends, family, and the broader community.

By extending his support and being there for others during both celebratory and difficult moments, he strives to make a positive difference in their lives.
