MORE TIMBER HAULIERS IN EVERY MARKET WANT EXTE BUNKS AND TENSIONERS There are a lot of indications that North and South America will be home to the greatest growth in the long-term. Not surprising, really. Our ability to listen to customers and come up with solutions that suit their individual needs is a recipe for success. Time and time again our solutions demonstrate that we are the world industry leaders. And that gives results.

We already have very healthy market shares in both the Nordic region and Central Europe. In Sweden for example, seven out of ten newly registered vehicles and trailers in the first seven months of the year were equipped with our bunks. In Germany, the proportion was even greater. But we're not resting on our laurels. Together with our dealers, we visit our customers throughout 2 | EXTE MAGAZINE

the year. And during the summer months we also take part in the most important trade exhibitions in most European countries in order to maintain our all-important customer contacts.

As we'd hoped, this year's Elmia Lastbil was a great springboard for our S bunks. Naturally, most interest concerned the S8 bunk, which with the market's widest internal dimensions means more payload, and not just height wise. Several hauliers decided that they would be happy to test the S8, and the first deliveries of trial bunks were shipped in the middle of September. We'll get back to this subject and tell you more about their experiences.

The demand for our bunks and tensioners is strong in every market around the world.

Existing customers are replacing their old equipment and investing in new. But it's not just old customers who are behind the increasing demand.

There is also a good flow of new customers. All in all, this is very positive development. have picked up speed. By providing drivers with a working environment that barely seems possible on timber trucks, our remote-controlled bunks are without a doubt the market's most accomplished product. What's more, the bunk's efficiency provides time savings that add up to more trips and better profitability for the truck owner. It's no coincidence that both 74 and 90 tonne rigs are equipped with Com 90 bunks.

As many of you already know, we're working on a successor to our Luftman tensioner. But Luftman is still an extremely appealing tensioner in many markets around the world.

For example, in Australia a great many Luftmans have been installed on timber rigs and rigs hauling bulky general cargo. Sales of Luftman are also increasing in Southeast Asia.

DECISIONS ON HEAVIER LOADS DELAYED At the time of writing, no decisions have been taken regarding general increases in load weights. Next in line is an increase from today's 60 tonnes to 64. Both the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Transport Agency are positive to an increase within existing regulations. Roads are classified according to their carrying capacity, and 95 per cent are in category 1 or better. All of these roads and bridges could handle an increase to 64 tonnes without any special measures. It's also a decision that could be taken quickly.

And timber hauliers should not have to invest in more axles, either. The requirement is for current axle load limits not to be exceeded. There are also requirements for specific distances between the front and rear axles in a rig. It's quite complicated and depends both on how a rig is configured and where it is driven geographically. In cases where hauliers do not have the correct information themselves, it's important – not least for a company's profitability – to get help either from bodybuilders or ExTe. The combination of rig and roads used will affect profitability. The right choice is essential.

In the case of 74-tonne vehicles, only limited parts of the road network can be opened up.

It's chiefly the E4, E6, E10, E18 and E20, and parts of trunk roads 40, 50, 55, and 56 that may be opened up to 74-tonne traffic in the initial phase. But here too, 97 bridges must be reinforced at an approximate cost of SEK 2.2 billion. The choice of roads stems from the extensive freight haulage that takes place on them.

The Swedish transport administration is currently working on extending the 74-tonne road network. Insiders say it will be another one or two years before any general decision on 74 tonnes is taken.

Magnar Sand and Stein Erik Engerdahl are salesmen at Morek, ExTe's dealer in Norway. The TL tensioner is definitely interesting, they thought. In Norway they must be fitted with a sensor to alert when tension reaches maximum. The Luftman tensioner is also a popular product in Norway.

A stand full of the latest bunks and a several faithful workhorses set the scene for a successful exhibition for ExTe. Despite the poor to middling weather, ExTe's stand was often more than full. It was interesting to note that a great many of the visitors to our stand were quite young.

Right off the bat I'd say we're undergoing a generation shift just now among haulers and drivers alike. As good a sign as any that there's a lot of faith in the future in this industry. And it seems it's just as natural for young people seek out ExTe. ExTe's new S8 bunk attracted a lot of interest.

The bunks are designed with frames and stakes in highstrength steel. The bunk is good for 8 tonnes and extremely easy to install; no drilling or welding necessary. And it's wide internal dimensions make it unique – in fact it's the widest on the market.

This means every stack can hold more timber, which is great for profitability, naturally.

"I suppose you could say that over

the years we've made choices easy for hauliers," says Lennart Wallström at ExTe. “Ours are the lightest aluminium bunks. We have light combination bunks; bunks with by far the widest internal dimensions, and we have automatic tensioners for every type of haulage.”

“What's more, we have the Com 90. And all of our bunks are available in several versions to meet different needs, from conventional timber trucks up to 90-tonne rigs.”

"Which is why most of the timber trucks and trailers at the exhibition were also fitted with ExTe bunks. And that's the way things are out on the road too," declares Lennart Wallström.

Bodybuilders are also getting older.

Parator in Bollnäs recently turned 20.

"We've already celebrated with our personnel and their better halves," says Per Olsson, Parator's MD, left, seen here with Production Manager Thomas Norling. "I think we've shown we're a stable company, and we're counting on being around for at least another 20 years." Of course, ExTe paid its respects with a gift. Others who celebrated the anniversary included André Själander, from Själanders Åkeri in Näsåker, not far from Sollefteå, and Göran Järnberg, who works for Berners in Skellefteå.

Both Mats Westerlund and Veronica Wiklund are drivers with Pohjanen & Ström Transporter in Piteå. The company has trucks for gravel, construction and timber. Veronica has been driving a timber truck for two years, and naturally has ExTe bunks on her rig.

The company is owned by brothers Anders and Lars Rosén. They have a rig with Com 90 bunks, which Per drives. “I must admit I was skeptical in the beginning. But I've been using them for two years now and they work absolutely fine. My boss and I are both particular about maintenance. I have to praise both Jörgen Spring and ExTe. They provide perfect support and are always keen to see that the bunks are working fine for us. We drive timber between 70 and 180 km and they work well.”

“Com 90 is absolutely fabulous from a work environment standpoint, and the safety is unbelievably good. We wouldn't be without Com 90," declares Per.

Peter Jonasson from Jonassons Åkeri in Malung popped in to ExTe's Service depot to get help with new cotters for his stakes.

Kenth Andersson, Knäreds Transporter has been a haulier for 40 years. These days he runs his company with his son Joacim. The company has two trucks. One truck uses ExTe E bunks, the other A bunks.

"The situation for us hauliers is tough, says Kenth. And now they're talking about increasing loads to 74 tonnes. I wonder if all the bridges can handle that. They're also talking about an increase to 64 tonnes. We can handle that technically speaking with our regular timber rigs, but it will require a change in law," states Kenth.

ExTe also attracts hauliers who don't haul timber. One such was Henrik Karlsson from Lindesberg. He has seven trucks and hauls rear axles for Volvo, from Lindesberg to Gothenburg, which adds up to 350 truck axles per day. He hauls billets for new axles on his return trips.

Bröderna Junttis Åkeri in Övertorneå is one of the biggest haulage companies in the northern part of the country. It will soon celebrate its 100th anniversary and it's been a family company for all these years.

Timber haulage is an important part of company business. Mostly they drive for Sveaskog.

Fredrik Heikkilä, one of the partners, was at the exhibition. "Now it's a matter of increasing the volume of every load. Therefore ExTe's S8 bunks are extremely interesting for us. We're about to install S8 bunks to see how they perform," says Frederik. The bunks are made entirely of steel, and I think that's the best idea if we're going to haul larger volumes. What's more, S8 bunks have the widest internal dimensions of all the bunks on the market.

Anders Eklund from Eklunds Åkeri in Moskosel was definitely interested in bunks with the market's widest internal dimensions. S8 bunks have wider internal dimensions than any others.

This means more timber per load. Anders was given more information and technical details by Lennart Wallström, ExTe's Product Manager.

Olle from Od Åkeri in the Borås region was extremely interested in the wide internal dimensions of the S8 bunks. "We try to get as much as possible in every stack. The company has four timber rigs, each with a crane and ExTe bunks, naturally. Trip distances vary from 70 to 120 km and they drive to Vida, Hestra, Aspa, Bäckhammar and Värö. ExTe's Leif Jonsson, right, talked about the advantages of S8 bunks and how simple they are to install.

During development of the Dbunks, the company was one of several called on to test the bunks in operation. "We are extremely pleased with the D bunks. And the new S8 bunks also look very interesting," they say. Ulf Göransson, left, also showed off ExTe's simple, flexible TL tensioner.

SERVICE DEPOT NEW EXTE SERVICE ORGANIZATION. "We've changed our organization and created market teams for each different market, explains ExTe's Managing Director Kjell Jonsson. Each market team consists of a salesman, designer, technical support specialist and order planner. The intention is to provide both faster and better service to our customers in each individual market.

Visitors to Elmia Lastbil were given a sneak preview of the new organization.

Hauliers and drivers could meet a qualified market team who answered their various questions and listened to their points of view in a specially designated service depot.

"And it's in this organization where I come into the picture," says Elias Hjelm, newly employed by ExTe. My job is to help the customer.

Elias Hjelm is a young (22) enthusiastic guy who began working life with family company Hjelms AB at the early age of 16. He's a qualified truck mechanic and has installed many an ExTe bunk and ten-

sioner. He was in charge of new production at Hjelms AB, and also had supervisory duties.

"I was offered a job at ExTe and saw new development opportunities. Getting out more and being closer to the customer was attractive," says Elias. I am 100 per cent behind ExTe's philosophy of listening to the customer. It's important that customers get what they want – good products and good service. I'll be working with technical support as a kind of traveling fitter taking care of any warranty claims, servicing customers and seeing what opportunities for improvement there are. My area will be Sweden, Norway and Finland.�

His family is the most important thing during his time off. But if he has time to spare he tinkers with his vintage American auto or rides out on his 1600 cc custom chopper. There's no mistaking Elias' liking for horsepower and throaty exhausts.

Model timber trucks and wood chip trucks were used in the wind tunnel. When the big fans were running, the slipstream corresponded to a vehicle speed of 80 km/h. A thin mist was sprayed to render the slipstream visible. We could see very clearly how the slipstream became turbulent between the cab and the first stack, between the stacks and behind the last stack. Of course, the same effects occurred between the truck and trailer and behind the trailer on the wood chip rig.

WIND RESISTANCE MUGS HAULIERS. Jet fighters Tunnan, Lansen, Draken, Viggen and Gripen were here, all spearheads of the Swedish Air Force. There's no doubt that the 1940s wind tunnel at Bromma has earned its keep through the years. It was hush-hush for decades. But today, results from tests on timber and wood chip trucks need to be wide ranging and produced as quickly as possible.

Because slipstream has proved to be a bigger villain than we thought. It mugs hauliers.

In wind tunnel tests, Skogforsk, the forestry industry and the Swedish Transport Administration have together shown that a reduction in fuel consumption of around 7 per cent is perfectly feasible. An average rig that covers 200,000 km per year on trips of around 100 km, can reduce costs by approximately SEK 80,000 per year.

How many extra loads would a haulier have to drive to achieve that net result?

It's all about making truck chassis and superstructures more streamlined.

"It was no coincidence that they used ExTe bunks on the test trucks," declares Lennart Wallstrรถm, Product Manager at ExTe. We've been carrying out aerodynamic tests on our bunks for more than 10 years.

In today's truck designs, vortices are formed between the cab and the load, the truck and the trailer and also behind the entire rig. This naturally affects fuel consumption. During the tests researchers used different kinds of fairings and achieved extremely promising results. Our conclusion is that boxy tractor-trailers will probably disappear from the roads of the future.

Claes Lรถfroth at Skogforsk is one of the project's enthusiasts. "Now we're looking forward to practical tests together with hauliers and truck manufacturers," he says.

We plan to apply to the Swedish energy agency for a three-year project which will include the construction of a full-scale test example. Skogforsk is currently investigating who would be interested in taking part in the next stage. Be sure to visit www.exte.se and watch the slipstream video.

EXTE'S S8 BUNKS LOAD MORE TIMBER THAN ANY OTHER BUNK "First of all, S8 bunks are made from the new, high-strength steel, which is not only strong, but also incredibly light. Although both the frame and the stakes are made from steel, the S8 bunk weighs no more than 159 kg, declares Lennart Wallstrรถm.

The S8 bunk's wide internal dimensions allow even greater volumes to be loaded, which is of course good for haulier profitability.

"We naturally have to meet regulations that apply to external bunk dimensions.

During the inspections when we register trucks, a few millimeters extra on the external dimensions are sufficient for the haulier to receive an injunction for action.

"I've personally been present when one

"The tests help us detect any design faults early and rectify them," says Lennart Wallstrรถm, in charge of product R&D at ExTe. So we're always able to say we never compromise on safety.

of our bunks proved to be a few millimeters too wide, and we were forced to take measures to get the truck approved," Lennart Wallstrรถm tells us.

"I really do encourage hauliers who are contemplating an investment in wide internal dimensions to carefully check that external dimensions are within legal limits. As we've said, a few millimeters extra can be way too much and put an owner to unnecessary expense. In the worst-case, you can be forced to replace the bunks," says Lennart Wallstrรถm.

In addition to the broad internal dimensions, the S8 frame is also extremely easy to install. A smart feature is that both frames and attachments have serrations to keep them in place horizontally.

ExTe has patented the solution with attachment serrations. No drilling or welding is necessary. Nor are the stakes welded to the bunk frames, which reduces vibration in frames and attachments.

Chassis and frame stresses are therefore reduced on empty trips. And removable stakes makes spare parts delivery easier.

This is unique for steel bunks. When a stake on other types of steel bunks is damaged and needs replacement, the entire bunk must be removed and replaced.

"The S8 bunk structure is both robust and flexible. It was simply designed both to load more timber and cope with truly tough challenges," declares Lennart Wallstrรถm.

TRUCKERS AGREE. COM 90S MAKE FOR A GREAT WORKPLACE.

The Com 90 project at the Tรถva terminal is in full swing. Three 74-tonne rigs from Benny Hultman's and Fermgruppen have been fitted with Com 90 bunks. Timber is hauled from the terminal to SCA's industries around 25 kilometres away. Even though it's too early to draw any major conclusions about efficiency, they reckon they win around one load per shift. And the drivers, who've been using Com 90 for several months, are in full agreement.

Com 90 makes for a great workplace.

TÖVA TERMINAL

The greatest advantage in using Com 90s at the terminal is the time they save; they make everything easier and lead to fewer aches and pains," says Tommy Hultman, one of the truckers. “It's much easier than slinging chains, and when we get to the mill to unload we don't even need to stop to unstrap the load. It's all done by remote control on the way to the truck.”

"If I had my own truck and crane I'd make sure I had Com 90 bunks. I'd never go back to using chains, oh no. I would say that Com 90 is excellent everywhere, both in the forest and at the terminal."

Henrik Backlund, who drives for Fermgruppen, being interviewed by Lars Lööv, who also produced the film about Com 90 at Töva. "I would definitely recommend Com 90," says Henrik Backlund. If there's a crane on the truck you can begin securing the load from the crane cab and check that everything is okay.

"Slinging chains in snow and ice is no fun at all," thinks trucker Fredrik Boväng, who drives for Benny Hultman.

"Everything's so much harder then. Now I can tension everything from the care and make a quick circuit to see that everything looks okay. Then it's time to hit the road.”

SVEN GUNNARSSON

THE TOUGHEST TRUCK – BUT WHO'S DRIVING? Gunnarssons Transport AB in Färila was elected as having Sweden's toughest FH16 at Elmia Lastbil. And there was pretty good reason, too. "The Gunnarsson family have shown great commitment in building a carefully thought-out truck that combines efficiency with style and feeling.”

Competition was hard, with 15 trucks in the line-up. But in the end, Gunnarssons Transport were the winners. We tip our hats and offer congrats.

Behind all the effort preparing the truck there's always a workaday world. Sven Gunnarsson, the driver, is adamant he's not the boss. It's his old man who’s in charge. But if you ask his dad Per, it's Sven who calls the shots. Either way, things seem to be going well for the Gunnarssons.

And on this particular day they're hauling small sawtimber from Sällbergsvallen outside Delsbo to the sawmill in Blyberg.

"We belong to Reaxer and drive almost exclusively for Siljans Skog," Sven explains. We have this new rig and also a truck with almost a million kilometres on the clock. We only run that on day shift. For the moment dad and I are the only drivers, but we're waiting for a new driver to start soon," Sven tells us.

Sven naturally hopes that everything will work out well. But there's one thing he doesn't like, and that's the unbelievably rigid driving time regulations. "It's all well and good to limit our driving on the days we actually haul timber, but at the weekends when we usually service our trucks and maybe fix the brakes, we're not even supposed to move them. Why? Because the rules say we must have a rest day," says Sven, more than a little irritated.

But back to the new truck. "We mainly just replaced a few items to give everything a uniform look. And it seems we succeeded pretty well. The truck looks so good that dad hardly dares to drive it now – he's afraid of getting the first ding," laughs Sven.

NORWAY TRIP

A FABULOUS FAIR WITH SATISFIED CUSTOMERS The transport exhibition in Gardemoen, Norway is somewhat larger than Mittia's Forestry Transport Exhibition, mainly because people and trucks from the entire haulage industry gather there. For obvious reasons, there are fewer timber hauliers in Norway. "We know most people there, and it's always equally agreeable and rewarding to meet them," says ExTe's Jรถrgen Spring.

Naturally, ExTe was there for the three-day exhibition at the beginning of September.

"We had fabulous weather with

brilliant sunshine everyday which contributed to the pleasant, happy atmosphere at the exhibition," declares Jรถrgen.

And just like all the other exhibitions where ExTe participates, there were ExTe bunks on most of the timber rigs present. "And the hauliers I talked to seemed pleased with our products and the service they get. But of course, there's always one or two with ideas about how ExTe can improve. "It's one of the reasons it's so important to be there and hear what people have to say," says Jรถrgen.

MUNICH, GERMANY

34-35° IS TOO HOT FOR GERMANS, TOO If the weather was improbably hot in Sweden in July, it was just as hot, if not worse, in Germany. And taking place under a broiling sun on July 16-20 was the Munich exhibition. Interforst attracts 50,000 visitors and 450 exhibitors from 28 countries.

Exte was naturally there together with its German dealer Richard Morath. "A great exhibition with many deals, despite the heat," notes Ingemar Larsson from ExTe, who took part together with Ulf Göransson. “I'm sure at least 90 per cent of all the timber rigs at the show were equipped with ExTe bunks.“ The oppressive heat meant that the number of visitors declined after lunch, probably in search of cooler surroundings.

KLAGENFURT, AUSTRIA

EXTE'S NAME IS HIGHLY RATED The international wood exhibition in Klagenfurt, Austria takes place in September every other year. "This year the exhibition attracted 502 different exhibitors from 22 countries," explains ExTe's Ingemar Larsson. While the exhibition largely covers forestry and forestry technology, it also covers forestry haulage.

So it's natural that ExTe was present, together with its dealer for all German-speaking countries, Rickard Morath.

"The ExTe name is highly rated in Austria, something that was very evident at the exhibition," says Ingemar. And a great deal of interest was also shown from neighboring countries such as Slovakia, Croatia and Italy. The exhibition attracted 20-22,000 visitors, and it seemed like every single one of them visited our stand.

"Thank heavens Rickard Morath was there to take care of the most unintelligible dialects," says Ingemar.

"There are a couple of major domestic bunk manufacturers that we compete with in Austria. But despite this, there

were ExTe bunks on 50 per cent of all the rigs in the exhibition. We collaborate with some of the major bodybuilders in the country, among them Riedler, SchwarzmĂźller and Ressenig. “It shows that the market has picked up speed and we were in full agreement with Richard that this was a great exhibition for ExTe. Not only were there quite a few deals, but more importantly we connected with customers from neighboring countries and could show off ExTe's broad product range to them," declares Ingemar.

From time to time there were practically queues for the ExTe stand.

"On the way to the exhibition we came across this construction truck. It's a flatbed with ExTe 144 stakes," Ingemar Larsson explains.

But in between there was always time for in-depth talks with customers.

Richard Morath explains the advantages of ExTe's bunks for and interested haulier.

ExTe sponsors the tournament, which takes place in Ljusdal. The end of July saw excellent golf and great fun on and off the course. And the finalists can look forward to the grand finale in Spain next year.
