The traditional “Drive in” for the Club President, Breda Duggan, Lady Captain Amy Arthur, Club Captain Declan McCarthy, Girls Captain Eva Burke, and Youths Captain Darren Mulcahy took place on the morning of Sunday last the 4th of December. The weather was benign, and in total contrast to the same event of last year, when all of those participating were virtually blown “off course” by hurricane Clodagh. The “drive-in” was followed by the Billy and Lucy O’Callaghan sponsored mixed foursomes competition, and it was played on the “original” course, which was especially chosen by the Club Captain. Declan and Lady Captain Amy for the event. Over 120 participated in this
competition, which is always one of the highlights of our calendar year. The competition was won by Barry Duggan and his partner Grace Dennehy, with a very creditable score of 38 points. Barry is married to our Club President, Breda and on this occasion, a domestic decision must have been made to split up their partnership, and that way to double the chances of bringing home one of Billy and Lucy’s most sought after Hampers. The “Apres Match” get together and presentation of the prizes was, as usual, a most enjoyable affair, and Barry Duggan, in his winners prize acceptance speech, was his usual most witty self, and nobody was spared in his remarks, not even Club President Breda herself. Kind remarks were also passed about the “Old course” which was prepared by Course Manager Enda Murphy and his Staff, and about the specially commissioned score cards, which were organised by Victor Mulcahy, and printed By Barry Murphy of Murphy Print. The Men’s Club had some competition prize presentations outstanding,
and Captain Declan made those presentations as Follows, The Heineken sponsored competition, won by Jason Arthur, the Scratch Matchplay competition sponsored by Donal Considine’s Golf Shop, and won by Simon Gallivan, and The Club Four-ball Competition sponsored by Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Insurances, won by Ian Prendergast and Euan McIndoe. Then on a sad note, Club Captain Declan McCarthy, on behalf of the entire Club passed on our sincere condolences to former Club Captain Pat Favier and family on the death of his wife Dympna who had only just passed away on the day before. Santa Claus is coming to our Club. Don’t forget that Santa will arrive to meet all of the little girls and boys of our Club members on Saturday next, the 10th of December at 2.00 P.M. Santa will be with us until 4.00 P.M. when he will be off to meet other little girls and boys on another one of his pre-Christmas tours.

Squash Club update by Andrew Garnett THE penultimate squash competition of 2016 was unique in that it was held on a Friday night with Majic and Farook Kahn leading their teams through the group stages to reach this month’s final. Sponsored by Christy Quill of Strand House, Dingle, November saw unprecedented levels of participation with upwards of 60 competitors taking part. First up we had Adrian McCarthy and Ivor Barton who gave a display of all action squash but it was McCarthy’s power that saw him take this one 3-0, first blood to Team Majic. Next on the night were Tim Lynch and Brendan Counihan, both of whom had played well in their respective semi-finals. Indeed, this game was no different as it went the distance taking five games to separate the pair, Brendan winning 3-2 in the end. At this early stage it was one match apiece overall, however, Oscar’s 3-0 win over Ger Foley meant that the advantage now laid with Farook’s team. Liam Shine took on Don Ring in the next game, Don needed to win this to ensure Farook

didn’t walk away with the spoils. But it was Liam’s guile and deft touch that saw him exploiting the angles to take the match 3-0. This in turn meant that the night as a contest was over but the two skippers faced off for bragging rights. Some great squash was played by both Majic and Farook keeping those watching entertained but it was Majic’s fitness and vast array of shots that saw him win on a scoreline of 3-0 and restore some pride in the process. Thanks again to Quills of Strand House for their sponsorship and of course to the Aquila Club for their continued co-operation. As you read this the final competition of the year will be underway with the finals scheduled to take place on Thursday, December 15, followed by the annual Aquila Club Christmas Party. Finally, training for juveniles continues on Friday nights at 7.30pm. If you are interested in playing squash, pop in to the Aquila Club for details on how to get involved. All are welcome!
