REPORTER WISH LIST THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS... Pick of the crop THE gorgeous Ziaja natural olive range offers a gentle and effective way to soften and hydrate dehydrated winter skin. Olive oil is rich in Vitamin E which nourishes and softens skin and stimulates microcirculation. Olive oil also promotes the elimination of toxins and protects skin against free radicals. Natural olive antiwrinkle cream (€5.99) reduces wrinkles and prevents their formation because it is so rich in anti ageing nutrients like monounsaturated fats, Vitamin E, anti-oxidants and OMEGA 3 fatty acids. Available from Keane’s, John Street; MacEneany’s, High Street; Quirke’s, Castlecomer and Urlingford Pharmacy.

Christmas lust have ACHIEVE the perfect glow for Christmas with this botanical bronzing gift set (rrp€29.99) by Karora. The micro peel will prep and prime your skin prior to self tan application. Bone china cups

IF you feel dead in the morning before you have had your first shot of caffeine then this beautifully illustrated Skeleton Espresso Cup Stack by Phoebe Richardson is for you. The coffee cups, inspired by 16th century medical engravings are guaranteed to make your espresso a bona fide talking point. It comes as a stackable set of four cups that build into a full skeleton. The images are silk screen printed onto fine bone china are

are suitable for handwashing only. Available from www.wolfandbadger.com.

Savings you can bank on THIS little guy looks like he was let loose in a prize garden and got tangled up in all the flowers. A fun ceramic piggy bank covered in pinks and burgundy. Very traditional in design but with a lovely chintzy twist. And you don’t have to worry about cracking him open as he has a sealed hole underneath. At just €12.95 from Yesterdays on Patrick Street this would make a lovely addition to a Christmas stocking.

Christmas party glamour BLACK lace is still a key trend this season and works really well at Christmas time as it adds a touch of glamour to any occasion. This dress from Evans comes in a wide range of

plus sizes. It’s ‘50s style structured waist, full skirt and round neck would be super flattering on most body shapes. Wrap up warm in this faux fur coat, also from Evans. It comes in sizes 14 to 32 and with it’s nipped in belted waist you won’t feel, or look, like a bear.

followed by the stars, till the black night covers him like a shroud. He is hallucinating, in death throes from cancer and kidney failure. FILM In Time Director David Niccols

T

he trend of intelligent science ďŹ ction which places ideas above action continues with this lackluster but still interesting addition to movies cashing in on ‘Inception’’s gold rush. It tells of a dystopian future where time is the currency. Instead of money people trade the hours left in their life. Everybody is genetically engineered to look 25 and the clock on their arm starts ticking once they reach that age. Much like ‘1984’ and ‘Metropolis’ there is a prole-like underclass who live in the ghettos. The central protagonist is one of these played by Justin Timberlake who survives on a day to day basis. However he soon becomes wealthy by accident and ends up in New Greenwich where the rich live. He is chased by Cliian Murphy’s villain, a corrupt cop and falls in love with an heiress who goes on the run with him robbing the banks. This rather convoluted plot is married to a very high concept with unfortunately a rather meagre budget. This is a shame since the director David Niccols reinvigorated this sub-genre of smart sci-ďŹ with ‘The Truman Show’ and

‘Gattacca’- the latter ďŹ lm which this most recalls. Owing a huge debt to the ďŹ ction of Aldous Huxley this examines the present economic situation through the perspective of this scenario. The rich are portrayed as decadent and immoral vampires while those scrabbling for survival on the bottom resort to criminality to exist. The ďŹ rst half hour of this movie is riveting as this vision is laid out but as the relevance is banged home in the rest of the ick it grows tiresome. The performances by Timberlake and Murphy are both superb but at times they are let down by dialogue which is a little obvious. The twists of the narrative mean that their relationship is not really that convincing or tense. Their chemistry is however the least of this movie’s worries. The casting of the insipid Amanda Syfried as the romantic interest is the undoing of a lot of the good work everybody else is doing. She has the charisma of a vacuum and the allure of a mop which her bobbed hair resembles most. Then there is the of the rest of the young cast which are either callow or badly written. There are some well designed action sequences and some great philosophical ideas wandering around this movie. However the casting director and producer should be held responsible for not getting more money and a better bunch of actors to dramatize it. All in all it is a second division mind bender. – DARRAGH BYRNE
