Idle talk and spin are not the jobs for the sunny South East JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@ GMAIL.COM

OUR SPLASH headline may not warm hearts, even though it has nothing whatsoever to do with what we might call our Indian Summer weather. It is a summary of the way we live today or more accurately the way in which many are forced to exist. We love to be the bearers of good news. Today, for once, and for perhaps the first time since our popular newspaper was born, the news is anything but warm. With the sun blazing down on us, it is always nice to complement stories of sunbathing, sun worshipping and simply relaxing in the great outdoors with tales of

good fortune and positive outlook. Sadly, while the weather is still good, the outlook is rather bleak in what we like to call the sunny South East. But, we have no missive from the Man Above that our skies of beauty are set to deliver anything but heat rays for the foreseeable future. But we do know that on the jobs front the forecast is not good and that instead of bathing in the so-called recovery our last Government in particular kept spinning on about, Kilkenny and the South East is in the throes of a jobs’ crisis and has been for some time. Who says so? Our politicians? You must be joking. Many politicians have a tendency not to deliver promises so it is perhaps not surprising that they don’t pass on bad or horrifying news, rather freely. Continued on Page 4

A glass of the last of the summer wine JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

Continued from Page 4 Digesting that lot may take more than a glass of the last of the summer wine. We say that for anyone to suggest that there was or is a recovery in the South East in particular is both disingenuous and disrespectful. The report makes disappointing reading but at least it is a reality check as, thanks to the authors, we now know that we are much nearer to any abyss than we are to cloud nine. Our great wish is that sooner rather than later, the region will rest more comfortably under the EC umbrella of the Sunny South East. Our people have been treated as second class citizens, told porkies and assured that everything possible was being done to

give resilient people a boost. We’ll drink to a bright future and indeed to the authors of a report that brought us sad tidings but at least told us the truth. This report should be compulsory reading for the politicians of all hues. But, the notion is that many of them won’t even bother their backsides to read it. Super snappers’ style in the sun STUDENTS of the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme put us in the picture. And what a pretty picture it was as the sun blazed down. The launch of the QQI Levels 5&6 Digital Photographic Exhibition, Moments Captured 2016, was an exciting affair. The photography was exquisite, a true reflection of beauty, skill and art. Guests were County Kilkenny and Carlow ETB (Education and Training Board) chair, Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh, Chief Executive, Cynthia Deane; Education Officer, Eileen Curtis, Adult Education Officer, Martha Bolger; and Anton Mazer, Chief Executive of KPCA. (Kilkenny Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). MC was Geraldine Moran, VTOS Co-ordinator, who congratulated all participants on the excellence of their work. She paid tribute to teacher Donal Costigan who guided them on their journey – a journey that presented a myriad of challenges, but had its ecstatic moments as well. Donal spoke of the great pleasure and satisfaction he got from teaching the class and bringing them to their destination. He referred to comments

made by the QQI authenticator when she was examining the portfolios, as amazing work and congratulated all of the participants on their outstanding achievement. Speaking on behalf of QQI Level 6, Tony Roche gave a very stimulating account of their depiction of 1916. Mary Doran of the QQI Level 5 class, spoke of what the year was like for participants, commencing with little

knowledge of photography to being able to showcase their work. Mary spoke with immense pride. Creative side She said photography awakened a creative side in participants that they were not ever aware of. It gave them new insights and provided them with lifelong skills. Geraldine Moran spoke

about the memorable year it had been for the participants, particularly as their photographs are to be used by the KSPCA on their calendars for 2017 and 2018. She said it has been a great honour to have been chosen, and again paid tribute to the excellence of teacher Donal Costigan. Anton Mazer said that it was a pleasure to be involved with VTOS Kilkenny on a very

worthwhile project. Mary Hilda Cavanagh praised the superb work that she said encompassed skill, beauty, talent, and dedication. Geraldine thanked Kilkenny & Carlow Education and Training Board, through its Adult Education Service, for its support for the programme. She finished with a quote from Eavan Boland’s poem White Hawthorn in the West of Ireland: “To seem from a

distance, to be part of that ivory, downhill rush”; the participants of VTOS Kilkenny have become subsumed – into the photography rush. Photographer was QQI Level 6 participant, John Healy. Light refreshments were enjoyed in the Countyard Bar & Grill. VTOS contact: 056-7764719 or info@vtoskk.ie More pictures Page 30

War monument: Jigsaw is complete JIMMY RHATIGAN

JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

A MONUMENT that will be a permanent reminder of the men and women of Mooncoin in South Kilkenny who played their part in the War of Independence is to be unveiled at the weekend. On the afternoon of Saturday, June 18, 1921, during a pivotal period in the Irish War of Independence, the leaders of the 9th Battalion of the Kilkenny Brigade Irish Republican Army, made up primarily of locals from the parish, planned and carried out an ambush at Sinnott’s Cross in Tubrid. Martial Law had been declared in County Kilkenny since January 1921 and consequently any activity of this type would have meant certain death for its participants if captured, or at a minimum military sanctioned reprisals on local habitants. However, these courageous members of the 9th Battalion were willing to sacrifice everything for a cause they believed in, a cause which was engulfing the lives of

all the people of Ireland during that tumultous period. On this Saturday, June 18, exactly 95 years after the ambush in which the British suffered two casualties, Kilkenny City historian and author, retired school principal, Jim Maher will officially unveil the Sinnott’s Cross Monument at 2pm. The monument has been a work-in-progress for some years, commencing with public consultations and fundraising from 2003, followed by the generous donation of the land on the ambush site by Jimmy Dunphy. Works commenced in 2007, with the Kilkenny limestone sculpture by Kilkenny artist, Ruairi Carroll unveiled in 2009. Since then other auxiliary works have taken place on the site, with the unveiling of the official plaque on Saturday being the final piece in the jigsaw.

All talk and no action says Chap JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

A LOCAL councillor is angry. He has expressed disappointment at the length of time that has passed since the last meeting of our local Joint Policing Committee (JPC). He claims the last time this committee met was September 2015, nine months ago. “It is very disappointing that the JPC have not sat or held a meeting for nine months,â€?said Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere. The Fianna FĂĄil councillor said rural crime was up 20% since 2007. It was a very big issue in the recent general election with promises being made left. right and centre about how rural crime was going to be tackled by all parties. “The reality is that there seems to be a lot of talk and publicity around the JPC, but very little action.

for gangs from Dublin, Cork and Limerick. “Last year in Graignamanagh and Skeoughvosteen, it was decided to set up a community text alert scheme. This has been a huge success with over 500 signing up. “A big amount of voluntary time and effort has been put in by all involved. I am chairman and there are certain issues we were hoping to raise at the next JPC meeting regarding text alert and how it is working. “But for nine months to pass without this committee sitting is simply not good enough.

“One in every 222 people in Ireland has now been a victim of a home robbery. This is one of the most frightening things that can happen an individual or family, an invasion of a home can leave people, particulary the vulnerable and elderly, threatened and insecure,Peter continued. Crime highways “The motorways have become the crime highways

Joint Policing Committees provide a forum where the local authority and senior Gardai policing the local area can participate with Oireachtas members and community representatives to consult, discuss and make recommendations on issues relating to policing and crime. Joint Policing Committees review crime levels and patterns, co-operate on local responses to issues and consult on anti-social behaviour. Members of the public and press are welcome to attend JPC meetings.

Euro ‘88: We had tears for souvenirs THE Boys in Green have

JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@ GMAIL.COM

given some amazing lifts to our country over the years with their fantastic performances in World Cup and European Championship soccer. Their sensational battles with world powers in the beautiful game, their passion and pride, have all given us reason to celebrate as Irish men and women in a world game where, in fairness, we so often punch brilliantly above our weight. As you read, we will already know the result of our first game against a highly rated Sweden. We may have drawn or even won, and that would be super, but even if the worst came to the worst, we know that our boys will fight with might and main and no little skill against Belgium on Saturday. Roll back the years to Euro ‘88 and some scintillating memories will flash into your mind’s eye, the classy goal by Ray Houghton that downed the might of England at Stuttgart. That was followed by a sensational volleyed goal by Ronnie Whelan against the Soviet Union in Hanover. The men, women and children of our country were on a high. At least half of our people appeared to be in Germany at the time as everywhere you walked you met thousands of Boys in Green, in amazing form, looking forward to the battle of Gelsenkirchen, against the mighty Netherlands. At home, our people celebrated like they had never partied before. The Republic went soccer crazy. Praying to God Babies were bathed early, cows were milked prematurely or perhaps weren’t milked at all and nobody gave a hoot whether or not the dustbin was put

out or, if it was, whether or not it was emptied. Going into that final game against Holland we knew that a win or a draw would put us into the semi-finals of Euro ‘88. We were living next door to the Holy Grail, lapping up some of the greatest times of our sporting lives and praying to God and His Blessed Mother that Jack Charlton and his merry men would catapult us to where we had never been before. But it wasn’t to be. An amazing pilgrimage of promise, hope and great expectations, came to an unlucky end as we edged towards a draw that would have perched us right up at the top table of Europe’s football elite. With less than seven minutes to go, we were still there. Rosary beads were fingered, prayers were uttered, hearts thumped as the countdown continued. Then came a freak goal that broke the hearts of a nation. A defender called Vim Kieft left us with tears for souvenirs as his shot at goal turned in God only knows how many directions before taking a wicked turn, leaving Packie Bonner helpless. Might have been The backside fell out of our world as we pondered

on what might have been, particularly if a first half header by Paul McGrath that hit a post, had just been a fraction of an inch closer. Those of us who had the privilege of being at the games in Germany had enjoyed a marvellous soccer pilgrimage with one of the finest squads our country has ever produced. The homecoming was out of this world. Huge crowds dashed to Dublin to welcome home soccer heroes. The occasion, like the game in Germany, was emotional. It said a lot about us as a nation, about those who wore Republic of Ireland jersies and Jack’s Army of who knows how many supporters who did our country proud as they invaded Germany but behaved impeccably during a campaign where every one of them were wonderful ambassadors for our country. The emotions of Stuttgart were almost overcoming. A soccer aficionado from Inchicore, Dublin, a loyal member of our travelling army, lay on the pitch after the match and uttered the magic words: “Ye can bury me here lads, I will die happy.” Some days later, Paddy was almost smothered in tears. He would gladly

Houghton scored: And Europe rattled have gone to God’s Garden following the victory over England but after the defeat in Gelsenkirchen he was unconsolable, a flood of tears.

A few pints But we all drank a few pints of German beer that night, sang our hearts out for the Boys in Green and looked forward to the next Republic matches. That is the way of our loyal army. That same army, alas, without some great supporters who have gone to their eternal reward, since 1988, is now on the march in France. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all experienced 1988 reincarnated. Our great wish is that Martin, Roy and his squad will enjoy the success they deserve and that our supporters will have an enjoyable and safe journey, a trip will no doubt eventually be recalled for its fantastic moments, without any vale of tears. But, what the hell, whether or not the Boys in Green bring home the bacon, our supporters

will continue to sing their praises and put bums on seats as we battle our way to the next World Cup. The pilgrimage is a continuous one. That is one of the truly great aspects of the beautiful game at this level, father and son, mother and daughter, grandad and granny, all are deeply involved. Granny broke all rules when she screamed an expletive with excitement when Ray Houghton headed to the England net. Sadly, granny is not with us this time. But as we enjoy the exploits of the Boys in Green, we will think of granny, all of our relatives and friends who celebrated in ‘88. They will be with us in spirit. It is impossible to break the ranks of a proud army.

Evergreen Euros on Kells Road JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

IT WAS a fantastic end of term celebration. It wasn’t UEFA Euro 2016. But it was the next best thing. To the boy and girl wonders involved it was perhaps the most important soccer event anywhere in the world at the weekend. And why not? The atmosphere was electric, the young players showed pride, passion and huge enthusiasm for their game. Their parents delighted in watching sons or daughters, or both, enjoying carefree soccer in the sun. Youngsters had a smashing time doing what they have enjoyed for the greater part of the year, playing soccer. Over 60 U6 players, members of the Evergreen Soccer Academy, had a brilliant club morning on the Kells Road on Saturday when four excellent pitches were busy as the children kicked and headed their way through a blitz that marked the end of soccer school activities until mid-September. The consensus was that the boys and girls had a ball to savour every weekend from last September to last Saturday when a football party had the type of grand finale that children love, a feast of

juices, jellies and crisps. Next generation Parents turned up in big numbers to enjoy the final fling at the academy before the summer break. Coaches were thanked and friends in football looked forward to continuing their soccer exploits later in the year. Coaches include Shane Daly, Adrian McGuinness, Gary Owens, Jaime Edwards and Syd Harkin. The morning was beautiful, as if someone had booked a spell of sunshine following Friday rain, which, in fairness, had it continued, would certainly not have put any damper on Super Soccer Saturday. Such is the enthusiasm of the young participants, the next generation of players for the club’s male and female under age teams, youths sides and eventually the juniors who have been blazing a trail in recent seasons. There to record the happy occasion was Reporter photographer, Martin Doheny. Today, we are privileged to put the happy campers in the picture, photos for any club wall of fame or family album. Perhaps it’s France for football, the Kells Road for the real thing? The little ones of Evergreen will always treasure the day they won their Euro medals. Head to Pages 90&91 for more pics

A glorious GAA weekend JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

IT WAS a fantastic weekend for Thomastown GAA Club and for an entire local community. Three days of super activities, including white collar boxing, marquee dancing with Nathan Carter and a brilliant Sunday Vintage Field Day made up an extraordinary programme of action packed entertainment. The field day at Grennan was perhaps a best ever, thanks to support from several counties and particularly from members of Kilkenny Motor Club that had a huge range of vintage cars on display. Under age hurling,

bouncy castle, slides and music by Ben Walsh and his band meant that there was something for everyone, all age groups, male and female. A display of vintage tractors, again by owners from several parts of the country, was voted the best ever on a vintage day that continues to go from strength to strength. The organisers were delighted with the response to their super weekend as they enjoyed support from so many quarters. Huge efforts And they were thrilled too with the huge efforts of their team of up to 40 volunteers who turned out every day to play vital roles in an event that proved to

be a massive success. Michael Ryan who is treasurer of the GAA and secretary of the Vintage Club said they were delighted with the weekend. “We couldn’t have asked for any more,” he told The Reporter. “The weather was brilliant, huge crowds turned up for all three days and our committee members were absolutely magnificent. We would also like to thank Martin Walsh for the use of his field.” It was a local GAA Festival at which everyone was a winner, particularly the club which does such brilliant work at all levels of the game in the parish. Bosses should invest in workplace wellbeing Successful businesses in today’s world require a quality product or service, creativity, organisation, determination and excellent customer service skills. According to entrepreneur Richard Brandson “If you take care of your employees, they will take care of your businessâ€?. My key message to employers is that supporting better nutrition practices for workers is proven to improve overall wellness, drive productivity and reduce absence statistics. A full time worker generally consumes at least 60% of their total daily intake in an average working day, therefore workplace nutrition has the potential to signiďŹ cantly impact on our health. PRODUCTIVITY Up to 10% of sick leave and higher levels of productivity loss at work are attributed to lifestyle behaviours and obesity. According to the 2015 NICE guidance on workplace policy and management practices to improve the health and wellbeing of employees, obese employees take an average of four extra days sick per year. For a company employing 1000 people, this could directly result in â‚Ź160,000 a year in lost productivity due to a range of issues e.g. back problems and sleep apnoea. The food we eat and the timing of meals can have a huge impact on our performance “on the jobâ€? i.e. nurses who consumed a healthy breakfast daily had lower stress levels, fewer cognitive mistakes and minor accidents at work. Unhealthier snack choices were associated with higher stress and more minor injuries outside of work. Other examples of the effect of nutrition on employee performance include hydration. Our hydration levels are affected by many environmental conditions in the workplace, such as air

conditioning, hot physical conditions and wearing protective clothing. Poor hydration practices during the working day can cause headaches, tiredness and loss of concentration and impact on mental as well as physical performance. Adequate hydration and regular eating patterns however can support staff in accurate decision making and help prevent dips in concentration levels and lowers fatigue and anxiety. The key aspects of a good nutrition intervention include: • Employees are involved in planning and delivering the intervention (through needs assessments). • Senior management are consulted on the planning of an intervention in addition to being visibly committed to the intervention. • Multi-level approaches work best e.g. group workshops alongside small improvements to catering provisions. • People certainly don’t not like being told what to do! A collaborative approach and behaviour change strategies are essential for facilitating change. • A follow up at one year is recommended to review the success of the intervention absenteeism rates etc. • INDI Registered Dietitians are the gold standard when it comes to nutrition and food professionals to guide workplace wellbeing initiatives. Ellen Roche is a dietitian at Nutri Vive Nutrition Clinic. For one-to-one professional nutrition advice to achieve optimal health and wellbeing contact the clinic. VHI etc approved. 100 episodes and 80 years on my own clock NED EGAN HERE WE are, folks, with episode 100! Part of the reason for the tale’s longevity seems to be the punters liking for the cut and thrust of repartee between the participants; (with the notable exception of the bould Dacent!) Although that larrikin – in spite of his rowdy uncivil ways – has the odd supporter. We like to know the location of such quare hawks – so we can avoid them! And while you may wonder why I describe so clinically the ghostie swallow named ‘Shem’ – it’s because everybody else has had his/her person and personality described – the Shem would throw a major Passerine tantrum if I short-cutted him! So there it is – 100 episodes up – and eighty years on my own clock. And now, here we are again with the valiant Connolly girls, Molly, fifteen, and Babsie, ten, and they making a cut for freedom. ‘Freedom’, in Molly’s case, from the paws of the Dacent, who came up with the spondoolicks to buy her hand from her father, the drunken, gambling Mikey. Girls were a bit further down the monetary – and social – scales back in those hard 1890s days. Good’ parents there were – whenever they could afford such a luxury as unconditional benevolence. But, in the long run, folks, happiness is mostly ruled by the old filthy lucre. Conjugal slave Being poverty-stricken - and deliriously happy were two different things altogether. So, faced with a life – or existence – of being a conjugal slave to the Dacent, and a domestic skivvy for his Wiccan oul ma to torment, the Mollers made a run; and wee cranky Babsie wasn’t going to hang around until some crithacaun came for her – maybe in as little as two years’ time, under the Brit laws pertaining. But Babs insisted MeeMee the cat was also fetched along – that idle wee furry brute is currently snoozing in a bag around the Mollers shoulder. Anyway, after various battles, they are now in freezing Bilzies Wood, with the aid of a ‘magic madra’ sent down by their Mammy in Hevvy. Although

just arrived, Shem - the ‘spying swallow’ – as he deems himself to be – is rapidly staking claims to hero status! Aye, but Shem has spent most of his time bragging and chirruping: ‘a load of oul nonsense’ – as the magic madra terms this speechifying. Shem has been on the point, a few times – until yacking got in his way - of setting off to spy out the doings of the Dacent, who lurks locally with his Purdey shotgun. Also to keep an eye out for ma Dacent, a ferocious and crafty witchy person - and to see how Simon and Bridie Flynn are going, on their mission to help the Connolly girls.

Roars at them In our last episode, Shem was castigating a gathering of the ‘Passerine Nation’ – as he describes, rather grandly, his own comparès. We now go – forwards or backwards in Time (Shem knows not which) to where he rears up on his Tribe, up in Blackbog. He roars at them for not coming up with a plan to save millions of their kin - foully shot down each year by foreign bowsies, who ambush them on their annual migration. He’s just ‘winged’ one of the more snotty-beaked yobs of the Nation, and knocked that swallow for six. “Right, Passerines,â€? Shem now screeched, “See that?

That’s the kind of thing that we should be doing, instead of just flying innocently to our deaths. Those Maltese geezers have no respect for quiet quitters – they’ll just mow every bird in sight down. What we should do is give them the old ‘Kamikaze’ treatment! Much twittering and nervous chirping ensues amongst the assembled swallows. Shem clouting that cheeky eejit bird with his sturdy little wing had gained attention, all right. Though not necessarily approval. Swallows going around whacking other Nation Members? Unheard of! But they started listening: cute Shem, all

right. Now one of the multitude piped up: “What’s this about, Shem – if that’s your name! You seem to be a bit of a tough nut – a hard case type of Passerine, if I may say so! Who elected you to speak, anyway? And what the heck is a ‘Kamikaze?’ This blast didn’t faze the Shem boyo a frac: it was exactly what he’d hoped for – gave him the chance to spout some more! Bawling Biddy “Right, me fine little ‘swaller’ pal, he chirped, “I could ask you who elected you to speak - but I have too much manners for that. About being a tough nut: I am that: what do you want

– a weeping bloomin’ willow or a bawling Biddy? Lastly, about the ‘Kamikaze’ – I’ll give you the good oil on that, too. Although you weren’t party to a conversation I had/ might have in the freezing dark of Bilzies Wood, I explained/will explain that I’m probably part past and part future. Which may confuse simple eejit Passerine chicos like you. But the gist of it is that I’ve been far into the future, somehow or other, and seen strange and unimaginable things. Big silver iron birds, carrying people in their bellies! Big boxes in their guts! Carriages whirring along smooth stony roads with ne’er a gee gee in sight! And a dreadful brawl between countries, in which one person in one fairly small black-coloured iron bird went off and smashed into a big smoking town floating in the deep watery great blue sea. And this crashing bird was called a ‘Kamikaze’, for some reason. But the K bird crashing into the floating town caused a woeful bang altogether, and when I looked back from a handy cloud – they were both gone! Kamikaze Yep, water-town and Kamikaze-birdie had disappeared. How do I know he was named ‘Kamikaze’? How do I know you’re a stupid chickiwick? By using my brains, Jack, that’s how! I was listening to Passerines from the east part of the world, who just happen to be called ‘Japanese Barn Swallows’. I got scraps of info {their word} regarding the doomed iron birds. So you see, swallow boy, what you can learn with an open ear and a closed beak!â€? But, in real time, Shem was still perched there, deep in freezing Bilzies, on a dead branch of the great oak – in case you’d all forgotten! And it probably hasn’t escaped your attention that he’s been all talk and no trousers so far – and not a thimbleful of action! The trio – Molly, Babs, madra – are beginning to think: “Is this lad just the greatest little con-birdartist ever? Janey Mac – have we been diddled by a feckin’ chirp-mad Passerine ghostie? Cripes, aren’t we the eejits!â€? But, reader, you and I know that the Shem bird is no ‘scaymer’, no slĂbhĂn: we reckon he’s the real deal‌ Ned Egan, Mullinavat

Brilliant start to Joseph’s new career ALTHOUGH he has been training near Owning for several months, Joseph O’Brien had his first runners as a licenced trainer last week and struck oil with a brace at Gowran Park and a similar score at Listowel on the same day. Justice Frederick got him off to the perfect start when he landed the opening seven furlong 2 yo maiden at Gowran at the expense of favourite Leo Minor, trained by his father Aidan. A good looking son of Lawman who stands at nearby Ballylinch Stud, Frederick had run well in a a decent five furlong Tipperary maiden on his debut and the step up suited him under the trainer’s brother, Donnacha Owned and bred by

Maxwell Morris. the winner is well related. His dam is a half sister to the Epsom Derby inner Oath and he is likely to be on the team for this week’s Royal Ascot meeting. Zig Zag gave the O’Brien siblings their second winner when he battled well to capture the extended mile and a furlong 45-65 handicap. The son of Zoffany came

from well off the pace and got a clear run to throw down his challenge at the furlong marker, defeating Phebes Dream by a neck. On the mark Dunbell-based Pat Meany was on the mark when Enough Is Enough caused a 25/1 upset in the seven furlong 45-65 apprentice handicap. Having scored her solitary success over the track, connections were hopeful the local air would suit the daughter of Pyrus. Enough Is Enough came wide into the straight and jockey Robbie Dolan timed it perfectly as his mount and won by two and a quarter lengths. Meany revealed that his charge is no star but likes the track and if the handicapper is not too hard

on her she might be able to add to her collection. Kilkenny born but Fethard-based Joe Murphy is having a good run. He was on the mark again when Shepherd’s Purse recorded a narrow success in an 84-100 handicap. A more than useful juvenile the strapping son of Pastoral Pursuits has become very expensive to follow. However, Murphy never lost faith in him and quietly fancied him. Given a cracking ride by Gary Carroll he made every post a winning one to edge out the well backed Reckless Endeavour by a neck. Tony Mullins and his long standing patron and friend Seamus Tobin combined to

take the 80-95 handicap hurdle at Clonmel on Friday courtesy of Balinaboola Lass in the hands of the trainer’s son Danny. The six year old never saw another rival from the second flight to come home 16 lengths clear of Rathaleen Girl. Another rival Having run at the venue last month, Balinaboola Lass then disappointed at Tramore but Danny Mullins reported that she panicked when tightened up on the inside. Hence the decision to keep her wide. The handicapper is bound to take a poor view of the ease of her victory so she is likely to turn out again before she can be reassessed. Windgap handler, Kieran

Purcell saddled his recent course winner, You Can’t Catch Me in the two mile and three 91-108 handicap hurdle and the result was the same as the seven year old turned the race into a procession. Shouldering a 6lp penalty You Can’t Catch Me, owned by the trainer’s wife, Elaine was settled well off the pace but was galloping all over his rivals turning to face the judge. Once rider, Brian O’Connell gave him an inch of rein he shot clear to in unchallenged by seven lengths from Hatch Hall. Joseph O’Brien kept up his winning run when Oh Me Oh My opened her winning account in the maiden hurdle for 5 yos and upwards.

Dubs downed by the Cats: What a PAT TREACY

JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

KILKENNY began the defence of their Leinster and All-Ireland titles with an emphatic 12-point victory over Dublin in Portlaoise on Saturday. Outstanding individual performances by Paul Murphy, Michael Fennelly, Cillian Buckley and Johnjo Farrell. along with a brilliant work ethic from the whole team, subdued the highly motivated Dubs long before the final whistle. Johnjo was the forward with the midas touch in front of goal as the Thomastown man helped himself to 1-5 from play in his first championship start. Paul Murphy was at his sharpest. He blotted out Dublin danger man Eamon Dillon and cleaned up across the full back line. Michael Fennelly was immense as he controlled the middle third of the field with his uncanny ability to do the right thing at the right time in defence and attack. Cillian Buckley was pulled all over the field by Daire Plunkett but the Kilkenny wing back outscored the Dublin wing forward as well as dominating in defence. Physical challenge The champions had to withstand a massive physical challenge in the opening quarter with a challenge by wing back Shane Barrett on Walter Walsh remaining in the memory bank as the game progressed. Kilkenny, playing into a stiff wind, opened the scoring with two pointed frees in as many minutes from TJ Reid. Referee Brian Gavin was unusually whistle happy in the opening 20 minutes as the majority of the scores came from placed balls in a shoot-out between Reid and David Treacy. Dublin pulled the Kilkenny half back line up the field as they tried to put the ball in front of speedster Eamon Dillon, David ‘Dotsy’ O’Callaghan and Ryan O’Dwyer in the full forward line.

The plan was good, but Paul Murphy’s alertness and anticipation rendered the ploy impotent as the Danesfort man put in a tour de force performance at corner back. He was brilliant. The champions enjoyed a four-point lead 0-12 to 0-8 by the half hour but Dublin rallied as Daire Plunkett, Eamon Dillon and David Treacy plundered points to leave their team one point adrift at half time, 0-12 to 0-11. Dubs blitzed Playing with the wind, Kilkenny blitzed Dublin in the third quarter as they hit 1-8 without reply to put them in an unassailable lead, 1-22 0-11. Walter Walsh hit a brace, Johjo Farrell raised two white flags before a long clearance from Paul Murphy saw Johnjo win possession and rattle the net in the 46th minute. TJ Reid kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from frees and play while Cillian Buckley helped himself to a second long range point in the same period. It took Dublin 15 minutes to cross the Kilkenny end line for the first time in the second half as David Treacy pointed a free. Dublin scored five points in the second half, three from frees by David Treacy and one each from sub Paul Ryan and David O’Callaghan as Kilkenny took complete control. Evident hunger The hunger for more success of the All-Ireland champions is very evident. Dublin threw everything at Kilkenny, particularly in the first half, but the winners imposed their will on the game. The deployment of Colin Fennelly at centre forward on Liam Rushe was very effective as the Ballyhale man prevented the Dublin centre back setting up any meaningful attacks. It was notable that the losers best spells were when the younger Fennelly was not at centre forward. Walter Walsh put in a big shift and soaked up a massive

punishment when winning possession. TJ Reid was closely marked while Eoin Larkin’s need of match practice was evident. Lester Ryan continued to show his good league form, this time at wing forward. The Kilkenny half back line (3) and midfield (3) contributed 0-6 from play. The highlight being Padraig Walsh’s point in the 31st minute when TJ Reid arrowed a free from the left wing into the hand of the on running Walsh on the opposite wing. It showed how sharp Kilkenny were in their thought and movement. Kilkenny head into another Leinster final in Croke Park in early July against the winners of Galway and Offaly. Scorers: Kilkenny: TJ Reid 0-10 (7f, 1’65), Johnjo Farrell 1-5, Cillian Buckley 0-2, Michael Fennelly 0-2, Walter Walsh 0-2, Conor Fogarty, Colin Fennelly, Lester Ryan, Padraig Walsh 0-1 each. Dublin: David Treacy 0-11 (10f), David O’Callaghan 0-2, Daire Plunkett, Eamon Dillon, Paul Ryan 0-1 each.
