The Kooples

Doorstops A little slice of heaven WITH The All-Ireland senior hurling final just around the corner it’s time to start planning the parties, win or lose. What better way to celebrate than with a black and amber cake or cup cakes. Nothing brings a smile to a person’s face like a batch of freshly made cakes or buns. ‘A Slice of Heaven’ based in Piltown, Co

YESTERDAYS of Patrick Street are now stocking the most delightful vintage-style doorstops. ‘Nelly’ and ‘Bruno’ are based on original children’s toys from the 1930s. Their coats are distressed suede and they have been weighted to do their job of keeping doors open for lots of good reasons. Young children love them as night-time companions, keeping a bedroom door open for just a little light and peace of mind. Nelly and Bruno also work wonderfully as paperweights or bookends. Check them out at www.yesterdays.ie

Say goodbye to brown spots DEPIDERM SPF50 reduces the risk of dark spots caused by UV rays by creating a barrier against UV rays - the major cause of dark spots. Thanks to the de-pigmentation complex which regulates the pigmentation

SAVILE Row meets rock, could be used to describe French label ‘The Kooples’ that recently opened in Brown Thomas Dublin and Cork. Combining traditional tailoring with a modern, urban style, The Kooples is the right balance of elegant Parisian and fashionable English street influences - a chic Parisian silhouette with a twist of British dandy.  The label caters for both men and women with a range of military elegance, revisited flight jackets, cardigans, dresses for iconic women, British styled ‘Crombie’ coats and three piece suits. The Kooples gathers its inspiration from the codes of rock, from music, but with its own signature traits that only truly belong in 2011.

Shop of the week WITH delicious drinks including ‘Pineapple Kiss’ and ‘Mango Tango’ what’s not to love about ZUMO at MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre. Zumo’s divine range of products includes juices, smoothies, soups, fruit salads, parfaits, yoghurt pots and wraps. They also offer a fabulous range of premium juices such as the ‘Wheatgrass Cleanser’ which is a mouthwatering mix of apple, lemon and organic wheatgrass, which is high in chlorophyll

and has been shown to have cleansing and detoxing effects on the body, or the ‘Slim ‘n’ Trim’ which is a blend of banana, organic agave, low fat milk, fresh low fat probiotic yoghurt, weight loss formula and your choice of strawberry or organic fair-trade cocoa. Every serving is bursting with the nutrients your body needs. And the best part is everything is juiced up right in front of you so you know it is as fresh as it could possibly be.

Theatre of the week ‘ONE For The Road’ runs at Duiske Inn, Graignamanagh on August 26, 27 and 28. It is a play that will bring the audience inside college life. If you have gone through college it will revive good and perhaps not so good times. Six friends who are just about to finish their first year decide to go for a few drinks in their favourite bar. But, as so often happens in college, a few quiet drinks

will never be just that. Daniel, James, Thomas, Chloe, Robin and Kate spent the year enjoying what college has had to offer – Facebook, drink, one night stands and a few essays here and there. It now seems that college is not what they thought and could be tougher than they bargained for. Tickets: €10. Doors: 7.30pm. Starts: 8pm.

Book of the week FOURTEEN-yearold Fintan Fedora has the brains of a damp sock but a heart of gold. Determined to prove to his father, owner of the ‘Fedora Fancy Food Company’, that he will one day be good enough to take over business, Fintan sets out to find the elusive chocoplum - the rarest and most delicious

treat known to man. With only the help of his trusty and long suffering butler, Fintan travels to South America. But little does he know he is being followed by a pair of incompetent kidnappers and an evil business mogul who wants the chocoplum for himself. Kids everywhere will love his!

Product of the week THIS year hipsters are turning their backs on digital photography and heading back to film cameras. They might involve a bit more work but the results are worth it. The ‘Diana’ originally hit the market in the 1960s. Crafted entirely of plastic, each camera cost about a dollar. As a mainstream product it failed and was discontinued. But like any superstar cut down in their prime, the

Diana’s posthumous appeal skyrocketed. As a cult artistic tool of avant-garde and lo-fi photographers, it was a rousing success! They loved its soft and dreamy images, super-saturated colours, unpredictable blurring and random contrast. Diana shots are raw and gritty, with a character all their own. Get yours from www. urbanoutfitters.co.uk.

Pub of the week KYTELER’S Inn on St Kieran’s Street is a hive of activity any night of the week. Leaving Certificate students are well catered for tonight (Wednesday) with a ‘Massive Leaving Cert Results Party Night’ hosted by Kyteler’s Inn and Beat fm. take part in the Bodhrán Experience where Helen McLoughlin will guide you through the method of playing the native Irish instrument. Kyteler’s also has a great reputation for food. Pop in there any lunchtime and you will find it buzzing with customers attracted there by its delicious menu and healthy portions. If you like a drink outdoors there’s also a spacious beer garden with overhead heating and a covered area that provides great shelter from the elements.

FILM Rise of the Planets of the Apes Director Rupert Wyatt

F

or many the original series of films are forgotten so a reboot of “The Planet of the Apes’ seemed a strange enterprise. However any misgivings will be swept away by this contemplative blockbuster that is as moving as it is exciting. James Franco plays a scientist who is trying to invent a cure for alzheimer’s. He is motivated by the fact that his father (John Lithgow) is suffering from the disease and in a frantic bid to save him experiments with an untested drug. He also adopts a baby chimpanzee called Caeser who shows supernatural intelligence since his mother was experimented on with the same drug. These two narratives are an odd fit but somehow Rupert Wyatt makes them work. An English director made an auspicious debut with ‘The Escapist’ which was shot in Dublin. Here he proves like Chris Nolan and Duncan Jones that the Brits are masters of stepping up a gear when they get to Hollywood. Although there are some ropey

transitions in the script the dramatic scenes with the father and the CGI action are deftly balanced. The trump card is Andy Serkis the master of motion capture who “performed” ‘Gollum’ and ‘King Kong’. By combining computers and his facial expressions Wyatt brings an emotional core to the film making. Serkis plays Caeser with heart breaking conviction. You forget as with his other work that it is an artificial creation. Even when the technology looks dated in a few years the acting underneath will still endure. This has sadly been marketed as an all out battle between monkeys and humans. You will be disappointed if you are expecting that. Much like the original series of films it relies on a more old fashioned structure with a slow build to a thrilling climax and is all the better for it. It also makes many references to the first movie with Charlton Heston while never letting these little in-jokes distract. So for the fans of a time when summer movies weren’t just a way to sell McDonald merchandise this is definitely worth the entry fee. It is very distressing if you are an animal lover but also enjoyable to see our nearest cousins in terms of evolution kick our ass. -DARRAGH BYRNE
